Tired of seeing North American election politics on my dash and the only thing I'll say about it is that it was a seriously bad move to not have compulsory voting for all citizens. Part of being an adult is making hard decisions and getting to opt out of that by legally not voting is not the gotcha that a lot of people think it is.

So you're a tumblrite who has finally changed from Chrome to Firefox. And, yeah, it was a bit of a hassle, but that was nothing compared to the giddy, communist rush of abandoning corporate proprietary software for a free and open source alternative, and now you want more. More control. More privacy. More communism. Maybe you've even started to eye that ultimate expression of defiant independence in our collective cyberpunk dystopia - switching your home operating system to Linux.
Only, that's a lot of a hassle all at once. Not only does it mean learning a new operating system, it means learning entirely new alternatives for each and every program you use that isn't supported on Linux. I mean, yeah, there's Wine for emulating Windows functionality, and Proton for video games via Steam, but the whole point is breaking free from proprietary corporate confines.
That's where this video comes in, with its pile of suggestions for free and open source options for common work & hobby tasks. Options that are available on both Windows, Mac, and Linux, allowing you to slowly and comfortably ease yourself into the open source world one utility at a time. You've already traded Chrome for Firefox, maybe next you'll trade Microsoft Office for Libre Office, or Photoshop for GIMP. You might even be surprised to discover that some of the apps you already use - Audacity, OBS, Blender - are already free, open source, and fully supported on Linux.
Eventually, once all the apps you use each day have been replaced with Linux-supporting alternatives, switching the operating system will be barely any more of a hassle than switching your browser was.

"Society hates single men!"
Um...well, I cannot say that's wrong, but when I see or hear this kind of thing in commentary, the man saying it is never talking about how dismantling outdated ideas on what men are *supposed* to be would be a really good first step in fixing this.
Society hates single *people* in general and loathes single and happy *women.* The act of being single and okay with it pushes against the grain and makes people uncomfortable. But you won't see the dudes feeling victimized by the stigmatization of being single direct their energy towards anything constructive. It always comes back to being women's fault for not centering them.

oh god whats twitter doing now?
taking something george said and twisting it to make it sound like he was like victim blaming/defending sa which he literally was not and people (both stans and antis, from what ive seen) who didn't even watch the podcast, or at the very least any of the clips that give context, are running with it and are either asking him to speak up/clarify/apologize or are just trying to outright cancel him for it

does near every single post-canon DE fic out there need to be tagged ‘Sober Harry Du Bois’? i’m getting so tired of it.
do i expect every single piece of fan content to have to fully delve into the often-depressing always-complex topic of addiction? not really. sometimes you just want to write/read a silly fluffy romance one-shot, whatever. i get it. but i think my issue is specifically with the fact that for nearly every sillyfluffy au out there, there almost must be a ‘sober harry du bois’ tag. and it does feel very slapped-on more often than not.
i think to me it is an unconscious statement that nothing *good* can ever happen to harry du bois until he is completely and permanently sober. before solving the next big case, he has to be sober. before quitting the force, he has to be sober. before falling in love with kim, he has to be sober. before accomplishing anything, starting any sort of recovery, making any life improvement, he must first be sober.
sobriety as a goal, as a journey, and honestly as a concept in of itself is not as cut and dry as so many people think it is. and i think it would serve a lot of people well if they did some introspection on the implications of how nearly every single post-canon fic that isn’t dealing directly with harry’s addiction have him as completely sober instead.
if the plot of the fic isn’t going to touch directly on harry’s substance use (and again, i’m not demanding that every single fic should), why does that mean that sober!harry must be the default?
i think i am just tired of reading a casefic, a smutty one-shot, a fantasy au, whatever, where it almost seems that before getting on with the plot, the author feels obligated to first assure us that the harry we’re reading about is a Sober Harry. it’s established with a couple lines in the exposition, probably about his improved appearance, a tag up top, and then never brought up again; a checkmarked box. like the societal image of An Addict has completely prevented people from being able to imagine a person just, continuing to live life, while still struggling with addiction.
life happens, with all of its backslides and achievements, mundanity and changes, to people with drug addictions just as much as people who don’t. is a post-canon harry who isn’t sober not worth writing about?
i think so. i think the game we all played thinks so too. in fact i think that sentiment is woven into the game’s very core. i just wish i saw that reflected in our fan content more.

people who make it seem like pb's recent lay-offs as a special event that only happened to pb are annoying as hell. i'm not saying the lay-offs are morally justified but it's annoying how so many will just jump to "omggg we are doomed and pb is the WORST COMPANY EVER and CERTAINLY NO OTHER GAMING COMPANY IS DOING THIS" which is just totally untrue. are you people incapable of research and putting things in context or do you just think its fun to be constant doomsayers and masturbate on the possibility of choices going down without looking at the current state of the gaming industry.

In January 2021 there were less than 200 tumblr employees (source is the tumblr staff member on the guy fieri arg discord server who was confirmed to be tumblr staff. Also I think another staff member posted it on their blog around that time). Unless they’ve mass hired people (it sounded like the size of the team was getting smaller at the time so unlikely) the content moderation team is extremely small. It’s definitely a significant issue that there’s not enough people to run this website properly, but it’s a staffing issue, not a not caring about or agreeing with bigotry issue. That’s also why they rely on terrible ai software to review images and blanket bans of certain tags. There’s straight up not enough people to actually review reports, however if something high profile happens they can act quickly. (Sorry this is a long ask, I just feel this is important information in any discussion about how tumblr is run)
yeah that's fair, it's good to have all the information available. it doesn't change the fact that tumblr has pretty much always had problems with moderation though, like it's never been good at handling harassment and hate speech as far as i remember (and i've used this site since 2011/2012), and that's why i can't in good conscience view tumblr as the like. friendly quirky little family community it markets itself as. i respect that it's not easy to run a website, but it has genuine problems with dealing with those issues (as most social media do) and there's not really anything that can excuse that, and i respect why people are upset about it. having been on the receiving end of both targeted mass harassment and hate speech myself, and having received absolutely no help or support from tumblr when i tried to report it, i can't help but feel pretty fed up with how they manage things in that department. i work in retail, so i get that some issues are due to staffing shortages and the limitations of the company and how it's run, so i don't blame individual tumblr staff members for that any more than i'd blame any individual employee of a company for that company's failures unless they were clearly personally responsible, but at the same time i strongly believe in doing the best you can by your fellow human beings and working to prevent harm wherever possible, and how tumblr handles harassment and hate speech falls way short of that.
