On a small island, carnivorous, deadly water horses are brought from the water to compete in a yearly contest of skill and bravery. The Scorpio Races follows two orphaned teen riders trying to win the race, and, more importantly, the means to secure their dreams of security and freedom. This YA novel explores dreams vs risk, gender norms, loss, family, loyalty, and trust. Fascinating, compelling premise, beautiful prose, rich world building, well developed characters, well crafted plot. Would love to read another book by this author.
