Vanilla Twilight
A/n: I recommend listening to Vanilla Twilight by Owl City while reading this. This short story was created to help me and hopefully others cope with the loss of losing someone close.

Summary: Xiao finally decides to let you go, learning through reminiscing.

The memories hit Xiao like a thief in the night. As he sits a top of a mountain just above Liyue Harbor, he closes his eyes and listens to the soft sounds of the wind, allowing him to find comfort in the nature. But just as he opens his eyes and stares straight at the moon ahead, his mind takes him back to a painful memory that reeks of you.
*flashback*
You and Xiao know that you both can't keep using your powers as you're doing right now, and it somehow aggravated him that Paimon was right. If you both continued to use all of your strengths for the sake of everyone to get out of the god forsaken Chasm, then eventually you all would be plunged into an abyssal of darkness. The both of you look at everyone; Aether, Paimon, Shinobu, Itto, Yelan, Yanfei, and then finally each other.
My dear y/n, my dear precious y/n, he thinks to himself. His eyes lingering for a bit longer on you than the others.
Your eyes met his, both staring in silence, in pain at one another. You are determined to help him lift everyone out, but you know you can't keep this up for long. Although you are a yaksha yourself, your strength is nowhere near Xiao's. Your head hurts as both your heart and brain prepare themselves for the worst. You feel tears threatening to spill from your eyes, but you refuse to cry at this very time. For the first time in a long time, you are angry that both your head and heart agree with one thing. The possibility of losing anyone at any moment right now.
Finally, y/n and Xiao feel their bodies start to give in to the inviting thought of resting. Before this journey, you had told Zhongli in private that if need be, you'd make the ultimate sacrifice. To say that he wasn't pleased at the slightest would be a tremendous understatement, but he understood more than anything, just how much this choice meant to you. And so he allowed it.
When the moment came, you instantly took it. The second Xiao stopped using his power was also the second you used that opportunity as a chance to engulf everyone around with the last of your powers. Xiao wasted no time looking at you. Both he and Yelan reached out to grab you, but it was too late.
"I love you", you say to him, a tear falls down the left side of your cheek.
"y/n-!", he yells.
But along with everyone else, they all disappear and are teleported back to the surface. Your heart races faster than ever, watching the mechanism of the gadget finally break into shards like glass. And there you no longer stand, swiftly falling into the darkness, accepting that this was your fate.
*end of flashback*
Xiao grips his head and tries to forget the memory. What pained him the most was how you told him those words he never thought he'd hear towards him.
I love you
Your voice lingering in his head, his heart feels in pain and he stares back at the moon.
"y/n..." he says and for the first time in his life, tears threaten to spill from his eyes. But he knows that he has to remain strong and be the fierce warrior he is. His karmic-debt only makes him feel more pain. Just then, the sound of familiar footsteps are heard, but he doesn't have to look back to know who it is.
"She did well", Zhongli says, now standing next to the yaksha who sits on the ground.
Xiao stays silent. His body stiff. Zhongli notices.
"Though it was an unfortunate time, y/n had accepted her fate before this. To say that this was her choice would simply feel as if she had died in vain. But she did not. Rocks hold memories of the past to the present, and towards the future. The memories we make with people as we journey through life stick with us forever. However different our paths may be, we each deserve comfort. Just as freely as the wind blows, her soul is now free. She is now at peace, my dear friend," Zhongli says to him and places a larimar stone beside Xiao.
Xiao looks at the stone. It's glowing and it's beautiful. He traces his fingers across the surface. Smoothness will a tad bit of rough. The stone glows in the night, a low glow but just enough to see. Xiao picks it up and examines it closer. Just as he picks it up, a familiar warmth engulfs his heart. The glow was now brighter. Xiao then sees you. Memories of you surround him. From the very first moment you met to the very last. He stares blankly at the stone, his body completely frozen as he relives these happy memories.
Only then did he truly realize just how much you had changed his world. From spending his days alone, to spending comfortable nights with you, and to the last time you saw each other. Xiao was in love with someone who no longer existed in the present. Now, you had become part of the past and it was time to let go. You will always have a place in his heart, and he would always love you no matter what. Not once did he think he'd be worthy of such an intimate thing, but here he was sitting down in silence as he admired the moon the same way you did. He was completely smitten by you, just the thought of you made his heart melt over and over. It was almost as if you were physically here right by him, causing this effect to take over. But he knew. Although you were no longer here physically, your spirit wanders in peace and so do the memories of you. You made a home in his heart and there's no denying that you were, his utmost best friend till the very end.
Xiao is brought back to the present, completely frozen in place. He then lets go of a breath he didn't even realize he was holding.
"y/n...", his voice trails off, and gentle smile spreads across his face once he looks at the moon again.
"Thank you," he thanks you, as he stares at the moon. A tear rolls down his cheek and a gentle smile rests upon his face. Letting you go was hard, but he knew that it's what you would want for him to do. To no longer blame himself for something completely out of his control, and to finally find that something that gave him peace. So whenever he was having a rough day, you were there, in his heart, bringing him peace over and over again.
Zhongli smiled and silently watched the night sky with Xiao.

General Rules
No triggering asks (self-harm, suicide etc)
NSFW is okay, just no incest and stuff like that
