Colour layering practise and recreation

Looking at Wangchi Mutu’s work I wanted to try and apply some of her techniques of collage to my own work and create dynamic layers and imagery. Mutu usually used inks and dyes to create her prints and here i’m using watercolour, charcoal pencil, yarn, magazines, synthetic braiding hair.

I started with a light sketch of the basic image I wanted to portray and added the areas I wanted to vary from eachother in colour. Began with a light wash of a beige shade and gradually built depth and darkeness of the colours such as greens and greys. After I the paint was down and dry I began collaging ontop with magazine cut outs, braiding hair, paper and fabric.

I wanted to approach this with meaning, for it to be a social commentry on how people of colour can feel uncomfortabe in their own skin and strive for features that aren’t their own, hence the caucasian collage and large ‘ringlets’.

However, I think that overall even with the 3D elements and attempts at layering colour , the image is flat and doesn’t have as much dimension as I thought it would. The reason for this I believe is partly user error and using the wrong medium. I think watercolour is too thin so it couldn’t bleed as effectively.

Next time I’ll try to do something similar in print using dye and fabric.

St vincent folklore

Looking at different aspects of my culture and taking inspiration from Wangchi Mutus exhibitions on african folktales, I wanted to look at some folktales from the carribean.

My mothers home island St.Vincent has a few;

1. La Diablesse is a known as a beautiful woman in a long dress, that is mean’t too hide one foot which is a that of a cow. You can’t talk to her or invite her into your house otherwise she’ll ‘take you away and tie you up’ in an ants nest.

2. There is Loupgarou or Socuyant, which is an being evil being that sheds their skin, sucks the blood of its victims and subsequently flies away in a ball of fire. It is said if the skin is found to douse it in salt and pepper and if it doesn’t get back into the skin before dawn it’ll die.

3.”Rounce is another evil character which grunts like a pig and will carry you away if it finds you outside of the house. To defeat the rounce, you must beat it with a stick, and no matter how many blows you strike you must say one; if you go above one, say two – another rounce will appear and do battle with you.

Legend has it that the Rounce, Socuyant, La Diablesse and the devil himself gather on dark nights under the Silk Cotton Tree to converse and to plan their dark deeds.”

4. Anansi the spider is a folktale about the god of knowledge.
