I see a disparity of opinion regarding Mat’s relationship with/thoughts and feelings towards Rand in the first few books and I would like to take this time to clarify something:
Mat is a tsundere.
This isn't even a shitpost, it’s canon. He has to be bullied into admitting he genuinely likes Loial in TGH, and even then he’s all squeamish about saying it. And he’s the only one who constantly says “aahhhh” every time he’s forced to make any kind of emotional admission.
And that’s why his relationship with Rand seems so imbalanced, I think. Because Rand is so genuine and Good and is always fretting about Mat, while Mat, in standard tsundere fashion, vehemently insists that he Does Not Care and will deny possessing any and all Emotions(TM) in court
Case in point, as pointed out to me by @vncthings:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hes basically a twin-tailed anime girl tbh
okay I lied this is kind of a shitpost
I have an exam in like three minutes and I shouldn't even be on Tumblr right now bUT I WILL BE BACK WITH MORE TOMORROW.
For now, guys, just remember: Mat does care, quite a lot, in fact. He’s just a chaotic dumbass tsundere who couldn't have an emotionally sincere conversation to save his life.

“Acts of pleasure are the passion to which all others are subordinate“ (ch12p38) is a quote from The 120 Days of Sodom by Donatien Alphonse François, (aka Marquis de Sade) published in 1904. (@noearchivistes)
Catacombs of Paris (ch14p1) - are underground ossuaries in Paris, France, which hold the remains of more than six million people. It was established in 1810 and open to public visitation from 1874.
(ch14p2) - Steam traction was introduced fairly widely in the 1880s and 1890s, in most cases for relatively short periods as electric trams were soon to follow.
Roland/Laurent Fortis (ch14p23) - Roland was was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne who became one of the principal figures in the literary cycle known as the Matter of France. He is also the hero in “The Song of Roland”, an epic poem  based on the Battle of Roncevaux Pass in 778, during the reign of Charlemagne. (written in the 11th or 12th century)
The 12 paladins (ch14p23) - sometimes known as the Twelve Peers, were the foremost warriors of Charlemagne's court, according to the literary cycle known as the Matter of France. They first appear in the early chansons de geste such as “The Song of Roland”.
Vincent and Gilbert (ch14p24) - reference two characters of the same names from Pandora Hearts.
Durandal (ch15p12) - or Durendall, is the sword of Roland, legendary paladin of Charlemagne in French epic literature. It is also said to have belonged to young Charlemagne at one point, and, passing through Saracen hands, came to be owned by Roland.

Moreau (ch16p44) - “The Island of Doctor Moreau“ by  H. G. Wells (1896). The character, Dr. Moreau, was an eminent physiologist in London who conducted gruesome experiments (on live animals) and ran away after being found out. He fled to an island where he continued his experiments and created   human-like hybrid beings from animals. (I just copy-pasted this from my other post. no regrets)

They are common in the city of Berlin, Germany, where the first 100 columns were installed in 1855. In France, the columns are named Morris after Gabriel Morris, a printer, who held the concession for advertising in 1868.  @kuroleo-nightray
Palais Garnier (ch20,5/21p16) - also known as Opéra de Paris or simply the Opéra, is opera house, which was built from 1861 to 1875 for the Paris Opera.
Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile (ch20.5/21p16) - The Arc de Triomphe honours those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. (Inaugurated in 1836).
Le Bon Marché (ch20.5/21p16) - is a department store in Paris. Founded in 1838 and revamped almost completely by Aristide Boucicaut in 1852, it was the first ever modern department store.
* The VnC version of it is a bit different in that there are these.... pipes(?) running along the building.
Exposition Universelle of 1889 (ch20.5/21p19) - was a world's fair held in Paris, France, from 6 May to 31 October 1889. The main symbol of the Fair was the Eiffel Tower, which served as the entrance arch to the Fair.

Averoigne and Auvergne
When it comes to these two French provinces we have a bit of a…. situation. Back in chapter one, Noé, while in (our) France, said that he “lived shut away in the forests of Averoigne for ages [...] it’s terribly deep in the country.” and there is nothing wrong with this until the province of Auvergne is also mentioned in connection to the attacks of the “Beast of Gévaudan”, which also took place in (our) France.
As we know, Averoigne is Auvergne’s fictional counterpart, as in these two places  aren't supposed to exist at the same time but somehow they do. How? It seems a logical explanation that if Auvergne is in (our) France, then Averoigne - is in Altus.

Some thoughts and theories before the new chapter comes out
I would like to talk about the thing that’s been most on my mind lately and that is the de Sade family. Back in chapter 19, when Ruthven talked about grandpa de Sade, he gave us a piece of information which I misinterpreted the first time I read the chapter.
Tumblr media
First time reading, I mistakenly thought he was talking about Noé but that makes no sense. Reading it again, I realized the actual meaning. So, at one point in his life, grandpa de Sade adopted a child to whom he later gave his title and property to. Who could this be? Without a doubt, I can say that this person is from an important, high-ranking family that we’re well familiar with – the de Sades. And I’m betting that the person in question is Louis and Dominique’s father (or mother, but I’m leaning more towards their father).
I had wondered why neither Domi or Louis have displayed abilities like their granfather’s since, as we’ve seen, vampires from the same clan have the same formula manipulation abilities. But this explains it – they’re simply not related. And this is an important piece of information.
And before you think I’m forgetting about her, let’s talk about Veronica. The fact that we’ve seen her abilities but not an ability from any other de Sade, makes me think that she may have been adopted into the family (that, and the fact that she looks nothing like Louis or Domi). It doesn’t seem that far fetched, right? Given the family’s history.
The last thing that I want to mention is something that’s been bothering me for a long time which concerns de Sade, aka The Shapless One, and Marquis Machina. Now the reference here is obviously Marquis de Sade. However, the thing that seriously bothers me about this is that Mochizuki basically split the name in two and gave it to two characters. Why would she do that? Well I have one idea – what if this is hinting that Marquis Machina is the Shapeless One? Think about it, the only way you could come to this conclusion is if you know the reference. Otherwise, you have nothing to connect these two characters with.
I feel that we have many things to discover about the de Sades and I honestly can’t wait to learn more about them!

Current year in VnC I place at 1889 because:
The Exhibition of Decorative Arts where Jules Bourdais’s “Sun Tower” and  Eiffel‘s project were competing in was held in 1885 and considering that Vanitas knows of the Eiffel Tower project, I assume that exhibition still happened in VnC universe. The tower itself was built 1887-1889 and, as we know of ch20.5, the Exposition Universelle of 1889 is to be held soon.
Now that we can accurately pinpoint what year VnC is set in, that got me to thinking - vnc!Paris is so similar to real!Paris even from a historical point of view (at least up to some degree). The existence of everything created by Babel is what causes the change from our history to what we know in VnC, but it seems that some events either still occur as they did or with some changes. So why is it that any of this might be of importance? (or not) Because this implies that future events could also happen, as we see with the Exposition Universelle.
Now, I’m not familiar in depth with French history, so I would need to do some research to see if there’s anything else that we might see in happed in VnC, but I find this to be another very nice touch to the story.
EDIT Wait a minute. Does this make... the battle between the humans and vampires was the French Revolution????? After a discussion with a few people, we’ve established that, no, probably not

So I have a theory of who I think is in that tank we saw back in ch18:
Jeanne
The real one.
Now, I don’t really have anything concrete to support this theory, it’s more or less of a feeling that I have.
Ruthven forbade Jeanne from says what the reason behind her craving for blood is and somehow I doubt it’s because she’s a curse bearer (also keep in mind that he’s working with the people who are creating the curse bearers). She also doesn’t strike me as a person who could have “raced over battlefields, mercilessly routing her own kind”. (forget that part. Just remembered what it said in the most recent chapter about bureaus being compelled to hunt their own king to atone for the crime they’ve committed.)
Jeanne used to have long hair and was put into an induced slumber. What if Ruthven didn’t really awaken her? What if he did something else in stead. What? I have no idea at this point. The current Jeanne could be a clone? The result of a vampire’s ability?? Who knows

I just love Mochizuki’s ability to manipulate her readers. I feel as if she makes us assume things even though they haven’t been confirmed in any way. Have these two examples:
Many theorize how the woman from Vanitas’s past could possibly be an Archivite because of her darker skin and white hair. Which is all good (and I personally like those theories) except that their very basis is something that has not been confirmed - why are we assuming that the vampires from the Archiviste clan had darker skin and white hair? This topic has never been touched in the manga but for some reason we sort of just go with it.
Another thing is the bed time story which was told to us in the very beginning. So now every time we think of the Vampire of The Blue Moon, we think of “a hated vampire known as “Vanitas”” who “was born on the night of a blue full moon, a symbol of misfortune. Everyone was afraid of Vanitas and ran him out of the village. [...] And in his heart of hearts he swore… vengeance on vampires born on the night on a crimson moon.” and about the Book of Vanitas as “a special book created by Vanitas, imbued with the power to interfere with vampires’ true names“ which, for now, seem to be the case. But still, it’s just a bed time story and it would be interesting if Mochizuki takes advantage of this to confuse us (aka. the story not being accurate/real).

A few posts have been made discussing Moreau as a character. My personal view of him is that of a rather interesting character. He may seem a bit generic and like comic relief at first but he’s not and I think that the last few pages before Moreau leaves proves this point. He is to be wary of. So far he appears to be predictable and unpredictable at the same time (at least to me).
Mochizuki has also kept a lot of similarities from the reference for the character (the novel ‘The Island of Dr. Moreau‘), which include:
Novel!Moreau - eminent physiologist (in London)
VnC!Moreau -  also an eminent physiologist  (in ???)
Novel!Moreau - fled to an island after his experiments had been publicly exposed
VnC!Moreau - went to Paris after begin expelled from the academy (where?) after a ‘certain scandal’
Both of their experiments involved experimentation on live animals (aka vivisection)
Novel!Moreau – wants to create humans from animals
VnC!Moreau – wants to create vampires
All these similarities may be important considering what happens to novel!Moreau – he gets murdered by one of his experiments that escapes his lab. But wait, there’s more. Not only does the experiment kill Moreau but it dies as well (they kill each other). This may well be foreshadowing of what might happen in VnC. It might be Vanitas, No. 71 (if he’s still alive), or any other of Moreau’s experiments but it’s a possibility.
