Marquis Machina
aka Francis Varney, is inspired from a real story! Thanks wikipedia.
Varney the Vampire; or, the Feast of Blood is a Victorian era serialized gothic horror story variously attributed to James Malcolm Rymer and Thomas Peckett Prest.
Warning: The story is more or less inconsistent due to being written in leaflets. We don’t know what Mochijun would keep, if anything.
That said I emphasized what I found suspicious.
I’ll sum up what wikipedia told me:
It’s about Sir Francis Varney, a vampire, who bothers the Bannersworth family
The first vampire with sharp teeth in literature??
The Bannersworth were wealthy but ruined by the deceased father, making the surviving family Mrs Bannersworth and her children (Henry, Flora, and George early on)
Varney initially seems to want blood, but may or may not want money as well
The story being inconsistent, it’s unclear if Varney is a real vampire or not
He may or may not be part of the Bannersworth family
He turns someone called Clara Crofton into a vampire for revenge
He is increasingly sympathetic throughout the book, and shown as a victim of circumstances who fails to save himself (suspicious due to Vnc’s theme of salvation)
He was cursed, according to himself, for betraying the royalists for Cromwell (Our Francis is a Beastia. Uh oh…)
He commits suicide by jumping in a volcano after leaving a letter to a sympathetic priest (but he does seem to die a lot in the book, take that with a grain of salt)
There’s also a moment where he was revived by a doctor, Dr. Chillingworth

The only thing that I’m thinking about after reading ch30 is on what Naenia said about powerful vampires and how she can’t take their names by force and what this implies for Louis. What I’m thinking of is that Louis actually wasn’t a curse bearer until he willingly gave up his name when Noé and the others tried to rescue Mina. From ch9, Naenia told Louis “finally you’re listening to me. I’ve been inside you all this time… I was waiting, for you to want something very badly”. This also means Louis had a wish granted and makes me think he might not be dead? Naenia was trying to tempt Noé into giving up his name in ch10 by saying “Should I take you to see him? Louis, I mean”.

I laugh when, in the last chapter, I have seen Vani triying to be cool about Noe's capture (by a ennemi)/absence when he's probably internally screaming about it.
He tries to pretend he’s doesn’t care. “Tries” being the key word. And it’s just not working.

The idea of Vanitas being possessed may not be that far off. If you remember waaaaay back from ch3:
Tumblr media
Just look at Vanitas’s face. LOOK. AT. IT. That has to be the most suspicious expression I’ve seen on his face.
Tumblr media
I’m screencapping this anon because I actually have been thinking about this for a few days now and I wanted to write a theory that kinda answers your question!
I was thinking after the previous chapter about how Vanitas has been in a really bad mood for more than half of the series so far. For the first two-ish volumes, he’s been pretty cheerful and sarcastic and taking nothing seriously.
In chapter 7, there is a change from the ebook to the published volume. When Domi is spinning Vanitas (like a record, baby, right ‘round ‘round ‘round), we see Vanitas’ eyes get really wide. In the ebooks, it just shows some ‘blood’ splatters. In the published volume, there’s something different.
Tumblr media
After this, Vanitas starts acting…different.
Tumblr media
He jumps off a balcony, reveals himself, puts himself in danger. Then he gets carried off by Jeanne and decides to risk his life by letting her drink his blood.
Tumblr media
And after this we see again and again how much Vanitas no longer cares about his life. I’ve considered for most of the time this series has been running that Vanitas is passively suicidal - he may not be actively attempting to take his own life, but he doesn’t care whether he lives or dies, and doesn’t make too much of an effort to stay out of danger. And it makes sense that Vanitas is mentally ill, he’s very traumatized and has been through hell - and only what we know so far - and that it’s really really hard for him to find value in his life.
But wait a minute.
Vanitas didn’t start out the series like this at all!
He was super enthusiastic and having fun with everything, he was excited to be a doctor, he was confident in himself and what he was doing.
Tumblr media
He barely seems like the same person, not after that party.
Also, he was super willing for Noe to protect him, to assist him, and act as his human shield.
Tumblr media
And then after that, he gets super pissed if Noe ever protects him.
Tumblr media
Vanitas is such a different person now.
Yep.
Different person.
I’m not saying that Vanitas has a split personality, though I think it’s a bit similar. But I don’t think it’s like DID, I think it’s more like Vanitas being possessed, and sharing his mind. It’s not a split from a single personality, it’s someone else.
Tumblr media
Because this sure as hell looks like possession to me by VotBM!
Not to mention, if we consider the possibility that Bloom Vanitas, then it would make sense why Misha asks for Vanitas to “give him back”
Tumblr media
The question I have left, and one that I don’t yet have the answer to, is who is the cheerful doctor and who is the depressed and pissed off teenager? And who experienced what? Who feels what? Who wants Noé to be a shield? And who wants to die?
…..
So back to the ask haha, I think that would be a really interesting perspective. Because then you could take killing Vanitas to possibly mean that one Vanitas (I have no fucking clue which one) might ‘kill’ the other. It’s goes along with this ask I got as well (if you are the same person hot damn you have some cool ideas)
There’s also a very good possibility that Vanitas is just being a moody little shit and it’s just who he is, but my description does not say “Vanitas no Carte overanalyst” for nothing

I have something to support this theory with. Sort of. So in this scene:
Tumblr media
We see whoever is in the tank react to something right after the panel of Noé yelling at Naenia. I’ve thought about this quite a bit and I’m pretty certain that this is a distraction. Because there’s something else happening at that same moment or roughly around the same time:
Tumblr media
Jeanne’s strong emotional response to that thing (it called her “our sweet daughter” so yeah, we have a pretty good idea as to what it is), could have resulted in her original body (or whatever it is) also reacting.
Tumblr media
“I don’t think Jeanne is the real hellfire witch. The hellfire witch was supposedly put into a coma and has long hair and while she may have just cut it there is a panel in chapter 26 showing a person with long hair who also appeared to be in an induced slumber. What if Jeanne is being lied to and the real hellfire witch is still asleep?“

Bringing back this post after 2 years even though it’s been quite some time since we got an explanation for this.
It has been confirmed that the above mentioned unnamed child survived... you know what *cries* because:
Tumblr media
And so he left their group which subsequently saved his life. This means that this child is 99,9% this person from ch8 (as we suspected):
Tumblr media
He does look a bit old compared to Noé and Domi but it could just be the mask or something. Anyway, this is a cause for concern. He’s sneaking around, that’s very suspicious. How likely is it that he’s holding a grudge for the death of the others? He definitely wasn’t at the ball by chance, that’s for sure.
we know that these four are dead.
Tumblr media
I don’t know about you, but I see a few too many children here:
Tumblr media
Even if we consider that the black haired girl could be Domi, there’s still one child unaccounted for.
Edited.

A very likely reference, Château d'Apcher is a ruined feudal castle which was built and altered in the 11th century, with further building in the 12th and 14th centuries. It was the ancient seat of the Marquis d'Apchier, one of the eight barons of Gévaudan.

Questions about Dhampires in VnC
Tumblr media
One of the things I’m desperately curious about in VnC is the Dham characters and what life is like for them.
How severe is the predjudice they face within vampire society? All indications so far seem to imply it is pretty bad. Are they actively forbidden from entering vampire society, or simply driven out by the hostility they face? Look at Jeanne’s visibly nervous reaction to learning Johann is a Dham in this scene; are Dhams simply a social pariah, or are vampires actually raised to believe they have something to fear about Dhams?
Are vampire parents even allowed to raise half-human children within the city? What about the half-vampire children raised by human parents - what is life for them and their families?
Do Dhampires crave blood like vampires? Do they have heightened physical abilities compared to humans? Are their life-spans longer? Can they be affected by the curse of the blue moon too?
Honestly, the Dhams are one of the most interesting group of characters in the series and I hope we find out more about them soon.

Let’s move Vanitas being a prostitute headcanon s to this post.
(This is almost as stupid as dick biting discourse but-)
Go on, people. DON’T HOLD BACK.
What we have so far:
Noé asking for a friendship discount and trying to sneak in in disguise.
Noé just knowing it because it’s vani.
The dhams also being prostitutes but paid with information/ asking for the information)
There’s a vampire brothel where every one sucks blood from Vanitas because he’s basically used to it??
Uuuuh if I forgot something then I’m extremely sorry ok.
Anyways: come at me with ideas

Vanitas no Carte vol.5 magazine vs. tankobon differences - PART 1
Yo peeps, as always here go the differences I spotted between the magazine and tankobon releases of the chapters in volume 5. I’ve only compared the drawings themselves and not the text. There were a loooot of changes, most of them very minor, so I’m splinting them into more than one post. Here goes comparisons for M.22 and M.23.
If you spot any other differences, feel free to tell me and I’ll add them in!
Enjoy!

what spoilers of the next VnC chapter made it look like: jeanne and vanitas about to have super romantic sex, noé having sex
actual chapter content: jeanne has a huge damn girlcrush, vanitas compares her to noé and possibly to a family figure (?), they’re not even really kissing and probably not gonna have sex. noé is crying because a girl was on top of him.
