You play visual novel! Can you give me recommendation? I just started playing them and I'm looking for good once
Haha, yeah I do. Occasionally, at least.
I really enjoy the "Our Life" games by GBPatch Games - they're probably my all time favourite. Trouble Comes Twice by Foxglove Games, something I played recently, was also really fun.
If you can get your hands on it really dirt cheap, maybe check out Bustafellows. It's not that good, but the art is great and it does have its moments!
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney is also amazing, if you're into a little law and order gedohns.
If you like Scifi, maybe check out Andromeda Six by Wanderlust Games - also a game I hold really dear - or Infinite Stars.
If you're into vampires, I'd 100% recommend both Vampire The Masquerate - Courteries of New York and Vampire the Masquerade - Shadows of New York. Thinking about it, I should probably replay those...
Fantasy-wise I really enjoyed When The Night Comes by Lunaris Games.
Scarlet Hollow and Slay The Princess by Black Tabby Games are really neat if you're into horror. And Touchstarved by Red Spring Studios is still a Demo for now, but it's already super neat! Oh and XOXO Blood Droplets by GB Patch Games is also fun to play if you like whacky, horror-leaning stuff!
And I guess that's all I have so far! Sorry it's not more, I'm sure you've heard of most of those already. I'm super picky with my visual novels so I don't play a whole lot of them, haha.

Do you have tips for writing scripts for visual novels with a romance focus? I've only finished one so far and had a lot of fun with it, but I'm finding it hard to find a new starting point.
Tropes are popular for a reason, so don't be afraid to use them.
Consume a lot of romance media, preferably in a genre that is similar to the type of visual novel you're trying to make. A lot of scenes I (Hazel's writer) wrote for Trouble Comes Twice are inspired by scenes (and tropes) I've enjoyed in movies, books, and other games.
Figure out the pace of the romance, and make sure it makes sense. It's jarring when the romance happens too quickly and the charas suddenly go "I love you" but the reader/player still feels like these two people barely know each other. It's also frustrating when the burn is too slow with too little pay-off.
Find advice for writing romance novels in general. I regularly google tips, or suggestions, for how to create tension between two characters or how to write interesting confession scenes. It can be helpful if you're feeling stuck.
Honestly though, we are also still learning and improving so I'm sure there are people in the VN scene who may have even more useful advice for you. The above is simply what I would personally suggest based on my own experiences developing TCT.

Now asking the Ravenstar team: When did you come to the idea "Yeah lets do a visual novel"? What was the inspiration for the Limbo theme? Do you have some favourite VNs?
This is a funny one! (I say that about every ask, please bear with me) Beware long post!
I have been a huge, huge fan of visual novels since I was a teenager, especially romantic ones. Making one has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and for my final project for college, I did a small study and a prototype for one. Rachel and I enjoy romance a lot so we ended up playing tons of visual novels/otome together, and obviously we pestered both Astro and Kayden about it (specially me because I'm not able to shut up about things most of the time, I love you guys).
We have been wanting to make a game together since forever, but it was like a silly little dream at first. Then, after we all got our degrees, we said: wait, why don't we actually try and make one? And I suggested a visual novel. And everyone said yes.
And that's how my master plan to convince all my friends to make a visual novel came to fruition.
The inspiration behind Lost in Limbo comes from a lot of places! We all love fantasy and building worlds together (mainly thanks to Dungeons and Dragons and a lot of videogames, books and movies) so it was easy to sit down and say "alright, fantasy world, magic, monsters, gods, etc." The first idea that later would shape Lost in Limbo was related to the seven deadly sins and the afterlife, and it soon evolved into what LiL is today (which you'll find out in the demo! yay!). You can tell those were our inspirations at first and those basic ideas are still related to the "final" version of the story/game to a degree!
I could list all the things that have influenced me as the writer, but I'm sure you all would get bored :') I wanted to explore a lot of topics that are important to me like family, love (not only romantic) growth and forgiveness (to name a few), but in a fantasy setting. The dilemma of immortality is something that fascinates me, so I wanted to write about that, and explore the idea of how different a god really is from a mortal.
And favourite VNs...God I have so many (so I will try to keep it short), but as in right now I would have to say Bustafellows!, Collar x Malice, Even if Tempest, The House in Fata Morgana... and from fellow indie developers, Our Life: Beginnings and Always is very dear to me, like Blooming Panic! (I had the privilege to have my art featured in the game and to this day I sort of can't believe it) and Seduce me: The Otome saga, a VN that has a very special place in my heart as the first indie VN I played during my teenage years. I have been lately obsessed enjoying Made Marion, Alaris, Trouble Comes Twice...to mention a few. Because I'm trying not to write a whole novel every time I answer an ask and I'm failing.

For the anon that asked about recs with two or more MCs; this isn’t an IF, but the visual novel Trouble Comes Twice allows you to play as one of two twins, each with their own personality and dynamic with the ROs. Haven’t checked it out in a while, but I liked it :)
Think development is pretty close to being done too!!
Ooo I have this VN on my to play list, but I didn’t think you could play as both MCs simultaneously?

I originally planned to keep my NaNoRenO 2020 reviews contained to the month of May, but what the hell, I’m having a lot of fun with this—so I’ll keep cranking these bad boys out till I’m satisfied! Next up is the dark comedy fantasy visual novel, Divilethion developed by Nemlei. This is their second NaNoRenO submission, the first being, Jack-in-a-Castle, and like their first title, Divilethion has the same smart writing and a macabre comedic tone that will have you in stitches!
You play as Lynn, one of the high priests serving the benevolent and illustrious god, Divilethion, the protector of your village. But, Divilethion’s protection comes at a price, a trifle really—the occasional human sacrifice—no big deal. Lynn has more important things to worry about, like his strained relationship with his younger brother Marrow. But, when you’re the high priest to a high maintenance (and jealous) god like Divilethion, sometimes sacrifices have to be made…
This game is hilarious!! Divilethion is supposed to take about an hour to get through, but it took me about twice as long, because I spent a good bit of my playthrough laughing. The game takes place in a nameless town under the protection of a monstrous god, Divilethion. The protagonist, Lynn is one of Divilethion’s high priests and his favorite—he is always willing to do whatever the god asks of him and he even delights in his work, much to the disgust of his younger brother Marrow. Unlike his brother, Marrow is a “heathen” who openly scoffs at Lynn and the other villagers for putting their faith in a (clearly) evil god. Divilethion’s only concern is that its precious pet, Lynn devotes all his love and affection towards it (not an unreasonable request).
Honestly, I haven’t had this much fun with a visual novel in a long time—in any other story, Lynn would be horrific—his unabashed reverence for Divilethion and his callous disregard for everything is the stuff of nightmares… and yet, that’s what makes him such a delightful character. He just doesn’t see anything wrong with his actions and even derives a bit of pleasure from savagely butchering villagers in the name of his god. Nemlei does delve a bit into his past, which gives a great deal of context to his actions throughout the game, but even in the “good” ending, Lynn doesn’t have a sudden change of heart where he begs forgiveness for what he has done. In fact, it is Marrow that serves as the “moral” compass of the story—he is the only person in the village who openly denounces Divilethion, which puts at him at odds with Lynn more than once. But, in spite of that, Lynn clearly loves his brother and that he is the only person he truly cares about (aside from Divilethion).
Then there is Divilethion, what can I say other than it is perfectly evil—a monstrous and powerful being that survives off human sacrifice and blood rituals—but he like most people has a soft spot for his pet, Lynn. Their relationship is almost cute, with Divilethion treating Lynn like a spoiled child and Lynn treating the god like a high maintenance girlfriend…
But, what really made the game for me was the narrator, normally they’re just a neutral observer—not here! The narrator of Divilethion is about as biased as you can get, constantly injecting personal quips about the characters and the events of the story and it is HILARIOUS! They have no trouble pointing out the inevitability of certain situations and their blunt observations are absolutely spot on! While we never find out who the narrator really is (I kind of think it’s their dead mom), their frank delivery is hands down my favorite part of the game!
The art is gorgeous, it has a cutesy style that is often at odds with some of the darker story elements, but it works well with the comedic tone of the story. I especially enjoyed that there are times when the dialogue is incorporated into the art itself and the fun animated sequences that make this feel like one of those paper puppet theater shows.
All in all, I really enjoyed Divilethion—it’s a bizarre and hilarious ride that will have you cracking up from start to finish.

Some Thoughts on Muv-Luv Alternative
I recently finished reading Muv-Luv Alternative, the highest rated visual novel on VNDB and one I’d been awaiting the official release of for quite some time. Overall, I really enjoyed it, and it was a mostly satisfying conclusion to a unique and fun trilogy. However, there were a few elements that held it back from becoming an all-time favourite for me, such as some characters I wished had played a more important role in the plot. I’d be really interested to know if anyone else felt the same way as I did, so feel free to comment or message me with your opinions, and I hope you enjoy my review. (And sorry to those who haven’t read it, but it’s pretty much all huge spoilers.)
Tumblr media
The Spoiler Police have their eye on you.
One of the great things about Muv-Luv Alternative is how much it builds on the plot of the previous two parts. After the end of Muv-Luv Unlimited, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the third installment, but it was a pleasant surprise to see Takeru sent back in time to deal with some of the events of Unlimited again, using the skills and knowledge he gained the first time around. I also really enjoyed seeing him return to the universe of Muv-Luv Extra, and seeing the inclusion of multiple difference romance routes in Extra and Unlimited become relevant to the plot. I always appreciate it when VNs take a convention of the genre the readers probably haven’t thought twice about, and then subvert your expectations by actually providing an explanation for it and making it an important part of the story.
Tumblr media
So it’s Sumika’s fault I had to skip through Unlimited a bunch of times and read through several very slightly different endings to unlock all the CGs, is it?
I also really liked the characterization of Yuuko. Hearing about some of the political conflicts behind the war against the BETA added an extra layer of meaning to everything going on, and the moral complexity of a lot of her actions makes her a fascinating character. As I was reading the later parts of the story, I thought a lot about her choice to release some BETA during a training exercise, leading to the death of Marimo and several other soldiers. I wondered if she was really right that Takeru and his friends needed to be unexpectedly thrust into combat like that in order to toughen up before the real battles, and if the tragedy it caused was still worth it for the greater good. And whether she was right about that or not, would I be able to forgive her if I was in Takeru’s position? One of the most emotional moments of the story for me was when after thinking about that so much, I saw her holding a picture of Marimo while the soldiers were leaving for the Kashgar hive. I was really touched by that brief moment of evidence that at least part of her cold and detached personality was only an act, and that she probably was just as sad as everyone else about the loss of her friend, even if she also believed the sacrifice was necessary.
Tumblr media
She even went to the trouble of finding the last surviving Kinko’s in the war-torn world to get the picture printed out and framed.
One thing I had somewhat mixed feelings about was the way the story handled the secondary characters in Takeru’s squad. I got pretty attached to some of them as they trained together and discussed their histories and motivations for fighting, and at first I thought I’d be writing in this review that Alternative did a great job of bringing new and interesting characters into the story. But I was pretty disappointed that they all either died or suffered serious injury before the final battle. It made me feel like they had just been glorified redshirts, there to demonstrate how much danger the protagonists were theoretically in, while saving the higher impact deaths for the end. I guess there is a bit of an in-universe explanation about the main characters living longer because they have “better causality” or something, but I think that’s still mostly an excuse to have the dramatic but slightly cheesy ending of Takeru and the main love interest girls on the final mission together without anyone less important getting in the way. I think I would have preferred to see some other characters, like Munakata, accompany them on that journey as well.
Tumblr media
And tragically, Isumi’s Valkyries never became a yuritopia.
I also wasn’t quite sure how to feel about the sexual content. I do actually think the all-ages version handled the rape scene really well. I gather that it was pretty much just pornographic in the original, but with those explicit images replaced, what’s left is an effectively disturbing explanation for Sumika’s trauma, and a demonstration of exactly what a terrible threat the BETA are to humanity. But the subsequent consensual sex scene between Sumika and Takeru was pretty uncomfortable for me. I know that Sumika loved Takeru, and that she had been working on overcoming the trauma for a while by that point, and also there’s some other excuse about how sex is somehow important for how her robot brain works, but there’s still something about the quick transition from “Here’s a vision of how I was horrifically raped” to “Anyway, let’s have sex now” that’s just really unpleasant. It might have been better if the all-ages version made some slight changes to the plot to allow for cutting that scene completely, as it really feels like it’s just thrown in because of the expectation that VNs will have h-scenes rather than for any other reason.
Tumblr media
And I really don’t need to hear any more about those details, thanks.
There were also a couple other weakness of the plot which brought down my overall opinion of it. For one thing, Takeru’s character development starts to get extremely heavy-handed. At some points, I felt like the whole plot was just a cycle of Takeru doing something wrong, then having several flashbacks to times when people said inspiring things to him, and then vowing to never do that bad thing again and going around telling all his friends what he learned and what a better person he is now. The flashbacks especially just got excessive. Some of them might have been an accurate representation of Takeru’s PTSD, and others were relevant to the whole plot about him gradually regaining memories from previous timelines, but I swear at least 75% of them were just making me reread some dialogue I already read an hour ago for no real reason. By the end I was ready to hurl my laptop across the room if I heard Marimo’s dying speech or anything about that old woman on Mt. Tengen one more time.
Tumblr media
When you just want the plot to progress, but your friend won’t stop having flashbacks to the conversation you had yesterday.
Finally, there was the issue of Yoroi Mikoto. Ever since the female version of Mikoto was introduced in Unlimited, I wondered what her deal was. Why did she have a different gender in different worlds when no one else did? I came up with all kinds of half-baked theories about how one or the other version of Mikoto had some reason to be disguised as the opposite gender, or about how Mikoto was actually transgender but hadn’t come out yet in one of the worlds. Her father showing up in Alternative and saying something like, “Take care of my son—I mean, daughter,” just cemented my conviction that this was all important to the plot and would eventually be explained. But it just . . . isn’t. Even after finishing my first playthrough of the game I was convinced I must have missed something. I went back to make different choices and skip through—which took forever since some of the videos are unskippable—just to unlock Mikoto’s farewell letter and find out that it’s the same as the others, with none of the revelations I was desperately hoping it might include. I guess maybe her father’s slip-up had something to do with the whole causality conductor thing also giving other people around Takeru memories of other worlds. And I guess Mikoto is a girl in the BETA universe when she was a boy in Takeru’s original world, and is the only person we ever see change genders between worlds, because . . . she just is? It was just to set up some jokes in Unlimited about Takeru being uncomfortable with his bro turning into a hot chick, maybe? I think the writers could have actually done something really interesting with Mikoto, but instead there’s this complete lack of closure that was the most disappointing thing about the series for me personally.
Tumblr media
“That’s . . . that’s it? That’s adorable, but that’s it?” - me realizing there’s no post-credits scene
I’m still really glad I read Muv-Luv Alternative—it was a solid conclusion to the trilogy, and I really enjoyed it overall. But after hearing it hyped up so much as one of the best VNs  ever, it was a little bit anticlimactic. I think Mikoto and some of the secondary characters had a lot of unfulfilled potential, and I could have done without all the flashbacks and the robot sex scene. I’d still definitely recommend the trilogy for its interesting twists, fun take on alternate universes, and moments of emotional resonance, but there are other VNs I would personally give a higher rating. Now, a VN entirely about Yuuko and her adventures in apocalyptic politics and inter-dimensional travel—that’s something I would read the hell out of.

2021 In Review (Visual Novel Edition)
Okay!!
So.
I played a LOT of games this year, but for sake of relevance we’re gonna narrow it down to the VN games and demos I tried. I’m not a fan of bashing games I don’t like (with certain exceptions) so don’t expect those titles to make an appearance here.
So, in making this list it got too long for my own liking so I decided to focus on the titles I REALLY love or think are noteworthy and should be on others’ radars...note how the list is still too long F R I C K.
DEMOS
Trouble Comes Twice - there isn’t a day that passes where I WISH I could have supported the Kickstarter. I was drawn to this game because you can play as either twin, and then stayed for the great banter and interactions and art style.
Herotome - the superhero genre is one I’ll never get tired of so to see visual novels out in the wild??? I’ve been on cloud 9 ever since. (Also the dev is a GEM so maybe I’m biased, but let the record show that I fell in love before we became friends and moots so there!!)
An Everyday Love - I’ve talked about this game a lot and love any excuse to reblog content (click here or here or here)
Twin Coves - I actually am not the target demographic for Twin Peaks but the dark atmosphere and the promise of mystery drew me in.  And then I played the demo and was SOLD!! And then I did a happy dance because I got so support the kickstarter lol
After-Party Chemistry - !!!!!!! Don’t remember how the algorithm worked in my favor but one day I was looking for a high school game to play (to be inspired on my project and also because we just need more HS/teen stuff and I’m starved ALWAYS). This project is still very much a WIP but I love that it’s chemistry based (I sucked at this subject in school BTWs and this game reminded me while also being such a treat to play)
The Radiants - Along with superhero games, I also have a love for magic. Also school based games....yeah there’s a theme here, thanks for noticing LOL. Another “demo made me fall even more in love with the game”
College Craze - Hey look! Another school theme game!! But it’s mature. No, like super mature, like Smut City with Plot and Character Customization lol. Dev is slowly trucking away at this project and it’s a joy to see it come along even if I’m late to the party.
Dagonrompa: REVIVE - My sprite artist’s WIP so maybe I’m a little biased but that just means it’s totally worth your time to check out the demo!! Also I knew of  Danganropa and didn’t plan on seeking it out, but this fangame demo is my first ever interaction and I it was truly a good time.
Band Camp Boyfriend - There’s a handful of demos I’m chomping at the bits to have a full game, and this is one of them! I was never a band geek in HS but was always curious about band kid culture (plus I am a high school content connoisseur *twirls mustache*) so I was destined to fall in love with this one.
The Closet Door - This is another game that has the blood, sweat, and tears of a loving dev, who wants more representation in games, and I’m so happy I stumbled upon this WIP. It’s charming and the art style is SO so so lovely to stare at, and the main character is such a firecracker who doesn’t take shit and can be a little sharp and I ADORE her!! (JMB if you see this, I love you and I think you’re doing amazing, always!!)
Fully Released & Played (at least 1 playthrough)
War on Roses - I actually cannot stand love triangles, but I ALSO can’t stay away from fashion sims...or beautiful Black people in games...and also character customization??? Yeah um, this is one of my top faves whoops.
Magical Diaries Horse Hall - School + Magic YAAAAAAY. Wolf Hall is on my list next, but this series is super fun. It’s stats raising and romance and fun (or off the wall) events sprinkled through game play. This is probably the only series that made me consider just once writing a male protagonist. (Horse Hall, f!MC and Wolf Hall, m!MC by the way)
Our Life: Beginnings & Always - This game makes it on the list by a technicality because I devoured it Nov 2020 buuuut I’ve replayed it so many times this year and it was the simplicity and wholesomeness of this game that inspired me and Hummingbird Games that I had to add it.
Blooming Panic - At the time of this post, there is a full and expanded version available for play and I haven’t done a replay, but I have romanced 3 of the guys and there aren’t enough words to explain why I love this game. If I could buy it I would have done it without hesitation, so for the content to be free really feels like I’ve won the lottery. Also, IRL I’m terrible when it comes to participation in Discord groups, and DMs are not too great--shoutout to everyone I still need to message back ahaha-- but the essence of this game is being on a discord server and it’s so. Much. Fun. (Quest is a gem, but nightowl was my first and by that logic still reigning champion in my heart)
Raptor Boyfriend - First I’d like to apologize for judging this game by it’s cover. SECONDLY I’d like to stress that it shouldn’t have taken a sale for me to put this on my radar but I’m soooooo glad it worked out. It’s very 90s (my fave time period for content consumption and storytelling) all 3 love interests are quirky and loveable in their own ways, the telephone call feature is SO fun, and I just had a really great time with this game.
Chess of Blades - This is not the list for boys love titles, BUT I will eventually make that post too. For now you will accept that this is pretty dang high on the list of faves this year. The voice acting is perfect, the art is exquisite, the love interests and their routes all bring something different to the table, and your choices have consequences!!! I hate that but I love it. Play this game. Cop it on sale if you have too. I love it, that is all.
Fully Released (& still on 1st playthrough)
Women of Xal - Being a baby dev on the scene + being Black with an intense love for VNs meant I was resigned to seeing white (and anime) faces more than anything else, as the MC and as the love interests. And then I saw art for WoX. Alllll the beautiful melaninated people. And then time went by and I fangirled and was rewarded for my efforts for seeing this project to completion (I wasn’t there at the veerrry beginning but it all worked out.) There’s soooo much content and treats and lore and just sheer amount of STUFF that I’ve put in X amount of hours and I still have more to go. And it’s super exciting.
(FINISH) Butterfly Soup (because I’m suffering from ‘I don’t want this to end’ syndrome, but I can’t have all these unfinished games in my life)
Do we share any favorites? Any titles you want to fight me on over my tastes? Let me know!! Or just scroll on 😂

This ask might be a little too broad so feel free to ignore if it is, but I was wondering if there are any IFs where the MC doesn't start off as a blank slate but is already a well-rounded character before the start of the story. By that I mean, they have a preset personality, or a set background, or a set goal, and your choices are more about moving the story forward than creating your own character. (English isn't my first language so idk if I expressed myself well, I'm sorry if I didn't)
Hi Anon,
There are quite a few games where the MC is preset. Regarding the background or some MC characteristics being pre-set, you should check our Database too!

Can I ask why you guys decided to do two different romantic endings for each pairing and no bad ending? I loved it and found it such a refreshing change but made me curious about the thought process. Especially having unknowingly played to a bad ending in some VNs when everything seemed to be good lol.
Bad ends just don't make much sense for Trouble Comes Twice. We think they would have been distracting and we didn't want players to worry too much about whether they had said the right or wrong thing to impress their love interest. It works for many VNs, of course, just not this one in our opinion.
We’re glad you enjoyed it!
