this is a portrayal of KARLACH CLIFFGATE from baldur's gate 3 and influenced as such. other dnd influences will be peppered into the portrayal very lightly as i actually know nothing about it outside of what i need to know from google and ikaros. written by -- aphelion, 32, they/them lesbian. this blog is also heavily influenced by @thcdoomed and dronia will be the main ship and if not actively talking about a ship or world ourselves, everything will be based around the world i have developed with ikaros for ease of interaction.

i. PLOT DRIVEN & MEME CENTRIC , i strongly prefer all threads to be started with a meme because it gives me a basis of ideas. if i love what's happening, i will be randomly shouting about it in tags or your dms. but, if you have a plot you would love to fulfill, i promise you i'm all ears.

ii. PARA & ABOVE , rest assured that other then a few back & forth for comedy reasons, one-liners will bore me.

iii. GOD-MODING , is absolutely allowed for most reasons if it involves things like : fade to black, time skipping, or action scenes. i doubt karlach can dodge most magic anyway. the only reason it isn't acceptable is if you physically control karlach outside of these reasons.

iv. SHIP FRIENDLY , and sex positive. karlach is a horny character and i won't necessarily be watering that down. but that also doesn't mean she needs sex to function, she's wholly comfortable with asexual partners. the communication is needed. while a lot of what i do revolves around writing partner, i'm still open for ships.

v. GORTASH , i hate him ( and it's mostly because of fandom interpretation ) and i will not allow redemption threads with him. karlach will not forgive him. antagonistic threads are acceptable, of course. ZARIEL : is a little more lenient, i will allow redemption threads for her.

vi. THE UPDATE / ANNOYANCE : i will not like or interact with any type of post regarding interacting with the post if i still want to interact 'like this post if you want to stay mutuals.' or 'like this post if you're still interested in interacting.' there has not been a case thus far where the other person doesn't put effort in or owes me or something. i will promptly unfollow.

How I run my blog:

Speed: I don’t need a lot of time to write a reply - normally I can get them done pretty fast (like 30 minutes?) if I know where we are going and if the muse is high, but sometimes for more complex/lore-heavy interactions I may need to go back, re-read and re-align things. I’ve been able to keep a steady flow for some threads and I’m working on others - but usually, unless real life happens and I get overloaded with work, I can get things out every other week.

Replies: I don’t do one liners well - mostly because I don’t use icons and I feel they lack something this way. I usually write 3+ paragraphs and keeping stuff short is always a challenge because my replies tend to be… Introspective? I add headcanons and internal voices and stuff, so they get wordy. I always try to give my partner something to react to and I tend to avoid locking the dialogue so the thread looks funny (from a chronological perspective). I don’t mind minor godmodding to help move things ahead (like assuming my muse will open a door or smile at a joke or something similar) and if I don’t agree with it I’ll always say it so we can edit.

Starters: I’m more than happy to plot starters! I used to do greeters in the past, but these frequently got nowhere, so there is a preference (on my side) for plotted things so I know where we are headed in general terms. Rather than posting starter calls, I tend to approach people I’m interested in interacting with separately - and I am always available to discuss new threads with mutuals. :)

Inbox: Always open, to anyone, both OOC and IC, as long as there is a VII verse for your muse or if we are using one of my other verses. I may find myself struggling if the asks involve non-mutuals or characters I’m not familiar with, of course, given the fact that my ask replies are more of standalone drabbles rather than short replies. Only exception goes for nsfw content - I will only reply to these if there has been development/conversation behind the scenes.

Selectivity: I consider myself as rather selective because sometimes I just can’t really see a way for Melissa to interact with the other muse (given FFVIIR changes, for instance), so usually making something work will involve a degree of planning/plotting and more time invested than necessary for a canon muse, perhaps. I am mutuals-only for threads, but inbox is always fair game, as indicated above.

Wishlist: Oh, I have a few? I always entertained a few specific ideas for Melissa, namely:

threads where she learns how to fight and/or use weapons (for self-defense) since she doesn’t know how to protect herself very well and it has been an issue in the past.

threads where we could explore Shinra secrets - particularly underground abandoned facilities and how that would overlap with life in the slums. Someone could escape, perhaps? Find sanctuary in the inn and she would take it upon herself to investigate?

threads where she’s taken topside - either because she’s helping someone or for another reason, Melissa has lived her life in the slums and doesn’t know anything about the rest of the world but for what she sees on TV.

threads where things get ugly with the Don - they have a local rivalry and she’s vulnerable outside the inn - maybe she’s kidnapped, maybe she gets into trouble? I’d be up for something like that happening and hurting/scaring her. Anything with the Don, really!

AUs! I have developed several verses since last year and I love to interact in these different settings. :) 

Honest Note: Understanding that everyone has needs and issues outside of roleplay, I guess. I haven’t had issues myself recently and a good portion of my partners over the years have been nothing short than amazing, but I still feel this is very important. Another thing that also helps me connect a lot to the other muse is if the mun is also friendly OOC - I always feel more comfortable when I know I have an open channel to talk and fangirl with my partner. :) We’re all here to have a good time, after all! :D

Exploring D:BH Fics (Part 9)

D:BH CHARACTER PROMINENCE IN THE ACTUAL GAME VS AO3 FICS

Which characters are relatively more prominent in canon and are they the same ones prominent in the fandom? I tried my hand at answering that question (quantitatively) and the graph above is the result.

I sorted the graph by prominence in fandom (i.e., percent of character tags received). The graph is meant to act as a rough gauge to identify characters that may have gotten (or lost) prominence when moving from canon to fandom material. The specific percentage numbers between the two sources (canon/fandom) are not directly comparable since prominence had to be operationalised differently between the two sources (all details under the cut). x Interactive versions of all graphs presented (so you can see the numbers clearly, etc) available on my Github page (link in description/tumblr heading!).

Usually I split the methods write-up from the results, but this time I’ll keep them together, again, because the process and assumptions made are especially important for this analysis (for starters, how was prominence even operationalised in canon/fandom material?).

Other work: I - II - III - IV - V - VI - VII - VIII

Before I go into the methods, two questions to think about:

1) There are a lot of ways to talk about the prominence of a character - how many times did they appear (and what counts as an appearance; just walking across the street, or actually being the focus of action)? How much screen-time did they get? How many lines did they say? How many times their name appeared or they were referred to? Maybe even how much influence they had over events?

2) If we’ve settled on an answer for (1), how do we compare that between different mediums? D:BH is a game and fics are, well, mainly text.

These were questions I thought a lot about before proceeding. In the end, I settled for rather simplistic operationalisations. For the actual game, I relied on the dialogue transcriptions from the Detroit: Become Text project. For fics, I relied on the character tags provided by the AO3 authors.

1. D:BH ACTUAL GAME DIALOGUE Dataset: Some people have done wonderful work transcribing most of the dialogue in the actual D:BH game (please see Detroit: Become Text on Github!). I worked with all the material they had - 4728 lines of dialogue.

1.1 Preprocessing Everything was in HTML so it was a simple task of writing some code to pull out the character names and counting the number of dialogue lines each individual had. x Assumption 1: Share of dialogue is indicative of character prominence in the game. I decided on this mainly because I was limited by the information I had (D:BT almost fully transcribes dialogue only) and also because D:BH is a very conversation-heavy game. x Assumption 2: Sometimes characters might be interchangeable for certain lines, e.g. Josh or Simon can tell Markus, “Be careful, Markus. Our people need you.” I chose to drop these lines and not assign them to any character’s count since there were only 15 of them in the whole transcription. x Assumption 3: The game has multiple scenarios based on your choices. I chose not to distinguish between them, taking the whole transcription as a long text document. My justification is that if the writers decided a character was important enough to have/be in several variants of the scenario (think Connor’s multiple endings versus, maybe, the android Markus picked up paint from), I should not discount that.

Following this, I selected 40 named characters (i.e., no random policeman/passer-bys) for visualisation and comparison. These 40 characters together had 3745 transcribed lines.

1.2 Results

Note the percentage is calculated from the lines of these 40 characters only (i.e., does not cover dialogue counts of unnamed policemen, unnamed deviants, etc).

Connor, Kara, and Markus take up almost 50% together. I think Markus has slightly less lines than Connor and Kara since it’s possible for North to take his place. Fan favourites like Gavin hold only a tiny sliver of the pie. Note that according to this operationalisation of prominence, RK900 is at 0% (since he doesn’t say anything in-game).

2. CHARACTER TAGS FROM D:BH AO3 FICS Dataset: 13,933 English-language fics scraped from AO3, spanning May 2018 to mid Oct- 2019.

2.1 Preprocessing I collated all the tags that fell under the AO3 character class (61333 tags). I did a fair bit of manual cleaning as usual (for misspellings, different ways to tag a character, etc). x (Long) assumption: Picking out dialogue lines from fic and attributing it correctly to characters is an extremely difficult task (I think I've seen machine learning papers on it). So, I chose to go with tags - I assumed that characters that are important or at the very least more than a one-liner would receive a tag. At the same time, I assumed that characters that are really just one-liner appearances (like “He saw Nines walk across the room.” with zero mention of Nines in the rest of the fic) would not get tagged.

Clearly this is not foolproof since everyone has different ideas of what constitutes a character that should be tagged, but it’s what I worked with (otherwise I would have to read and check every fic). Stuff to note:

1) Ambiguous tags like “everyone” were not assigned to any character. 2) Tags that mentioned multiple characters (e.g “mentioned North and Josh”) or ships were also not assigned to any character. 3) Tags that were in the style of “Connor (mentioned)” were still added to their respective characters. Again, I think most writers have varying ideas of what a “mention” actually means, so I decided to be less stringent and more inclusive here. 4) Tags for ‘Jericho’  and ‘Jericrew’, etc - I added 0.25 to the counts of Markus, North, Simon, and Josh each time such a tag appeared. Whether I did that or not probably wouldn’t have drastically changed the results though, since there were only 87~ Jericho-related character tags.

I picked out the same 40 named characters I looked at from the actual game dialogue. These 40 characters together had received 53274 tags.

2.2 Results

Again, note the percentage is calculated from the total number of times these 40 characters were tagged (e.g., does not include tag counts for OCs - which were tagged quite a bit as well).

We see Connor still holding on to his share and huge jumps from Gavin and RK900. DPD members in general also seem to have slightly bigger slices of the pie in fandom.

3. Ending notes It’s pretty difficult to see some of the information from the two pie charts, so I put the information from both into the bar chart that I introduced this whole post with:

I can’t emphasise enough that the exact percentage numbers between canon/fandom are not directly comparable since prominence had to be operationalised differently. Nonetheless, I think the chart does capture a trend that reflects my reading experience. Now I just need more spare time/need to kidnap some data minions  so I can work on a more rigorous and direct comparison.

Muse and mun are OF AGE and my muse(s) are CANON DIVERGENT, heavily headcanon-based, HIGHLY SELECTIVE and EXTREMELY PRIVATE (meaning I am a mutuals-only blog). I am EXTREMELY SELECTIVE, due to my preference with MULTI-PARA AND NOVELLA THREADS that explore in-depth internal characterizations and thought processes.

Scorpion and Sub-Zero are intense characters, so plotting and communicating is extremely important and pivotal. I really don’t like to plot everything out beforehand, because the story becomes predictable and boring and I like the element of surprise (freeform, or winging it, whatever you want to call it). So I much prefer IC being much casual and more forgiving when it comes to it.

Don’t assume and read my stuff between me and my long-term partners and expect to get into such intimate and knowing relationship without ever get to knowing my muses. many weeks, if not months of development and back-to-back writing helped us to get there and if we only began threading each other? They are most likely going to be hostile and indifferent at times of what others are thinking/doing.

People don’t honestly play their villain as a villain and I have zero intention to bend my muse (especially for Scorpion’s verse where he’s a specter bound by Quan Chi’s dark sorcery), despite them thinking otherwise in his subconscious. Scorpion has twisted and warped sense of conscience and conscious and they will surely reflect on their introspection and internalization..

I try my absolute best to play them like canon in my interactions; because my replies may seem quicker to most people, but that does not mean I half-ass them or it takes less time to type them out. I try to be VERY IC (I try my absolute hardest), so don’t expect my character to be softened unless situations requires them to be so.

I WILL UNFOLLOW INACTIVE BLOGS AFTER A MONTH. Don’t take this personally; for I will refollow if you do decide to come back. I like to keep things on my dash at a minimal.

I. CONTENTS OF THE BLOG

This blog is heavily NSFW and has lots of NSFW-related contents. Untagged nsfw materials include VIOLENCE, MURDER, BLOOD, MUTILATION, GORE and such. I am multiship and multiverse, meaning all the monogamy (both m/m and m/f) exists all in different timeline and nothing will overlap.

I don’t mind doing threads that are non-shippy, as long as my muse has interest in them. You will find a lot of SMUT, GORE, ANGST, VIOLENCE. I don’t tend to tag all the time, although I try to do the most of the time.

Anon function is off for the time being. And a good reason at that.

II. SHIPPING/SMUT

My muses are biromantic / demisexual and multiship. I am also open to multiship with other canon/OC characters as well. Of course, it all depends on chemistry. And romantic/sexual relationship isn’t a prerequisite when it comes to exploring their character nor I find it a necessity, because they are not very promiscuous characters, although the mun likes to write smut more than occasionally.

III. LIMITATIONS

If you are not sure about something, then there’s always the ask box and IM for lengthy discussions. I am fine with writing codependent relationships, violence, gore and rape. Abuse (both physical and mental) is a big no-no for mun. It’s triggering and I still suffer from traumatic experiences from the past.

IV. FANDOMS/OCS

Primary fandom is Mortal Kombat Franchise as of now. I welcome any male and female OCs and characters from other fandoms. And I am more than eager to explore crossovers and creating alternate universes.

V. WRITING STYLE

I highly prefer my replies to be at least THREE SUBSTANTIAL PARAGRAPHS, most frequently multi-para if the plot requires it or is necessary, although there will be times I will settle for two-para or even single para replies. And be a courteous person and do try to match the reply length. I will not tolerate three or four paragraphs reply to one or two sentences.

I will immediately drop the thread if my length isn’t matched, godmod or force ship. Overpowering immortal characters do not strike me as particularly intriguing either.

Exceptions of length-matching; if the thread requires more action than psychological stuff, if you’re more comfortable with short-length, we can discuss it but I don’t find one-liners particularly worthwhile to pursue.

VI. ASKS/MEMES

I don’t mind if you tag musings, quotes and pictures for me to look at and once we become mutuals, I will do the same thing. Feel free to send me any asks and memes. Also, I take suggestions or requests for me to write drabbles, headcanons and plot bunnies for my threads.

As Seungmin tried to educate my 0.25 braincell, I couldn't not notice that there was a new waiter. “Seungmin, have you seen him around?” I asked “Y/N, if you’re gonna look for your new love victim, then you’re not gonna get math, deal with it.” He sassed making me fake pout “And yes, his name is Bang Chan or Chris, he’s a 97 liner and he’s from Australia, need anything else, dork?” Seungmin added “Yes, his number.” I joked, making Seungmin roll his eyes at me before forcing a math book into my face. 

Since that day, I’ve been at the café every day, forcing either Jeongin or Jisung or Yeojin or Changbin or Seungmin or anyone to go with me. I swear I’m not creepy. One day, we had a free first period so me, Jeongin and Jisung went to the café as we had a test the next period and we wanted to study while getting coffee. 

“I’m so gonna fail....” I sighed as Jisung laughed “Yah! What’s so funny, squirrel boy?” I asked “You do realize you look like such a drama queen.” He answered as I sighed again and looked back at my book. Jeongin excused himself to go to the bathroom and Jisung went to call someone, leaving me alone, when I got startled by someone sitting next to me. 

“Hate to eavesdrop, but here.” Chan said, putting a drink on the table “It might help you concentrate, I always drink it before an important test and it always helps” He added, after noticing my shocked and confused face. “This might seem creepy, sorry.” He looked down, nervously giggling. “Oh, no, I was just shocked, but yeah, thank you so much! I need all the help I can get.” I said, taking the drink in my hand “Wait, what even is this?” I asked “Secret recipe.” He said, winking before leaving me alone.

I wasn’t alone for long, as Jisung came back and asked me where the drink is from and when I explained, he looked at me worried. “Y/N, you’re gonna drink something a stranger gave you?” He asked “An attractive stranger.” I mumbled “He seems like a good human.” I replied “He is....” Jisung admitted, his tone sounding as if he was defeated. “He’s the 3rd member of 3racha, cool guy, very nice, too bad he’s a major dork.” Jisung sipped his tea “Oh, so like you.” I joked as he chocked on his drink as I laughed. 

I took a sip of the drink. “Omg, this is amazing.” I said “Can I smell?” Jisung asked “Oh, this is THE Bang Chan drink.” He said after smelling the drink “The what?” I asked “He made it for me once when I was having a hard time studying and I ended up being the student with the top score.” Jisung explained “See? Chan is amazing.” I said “Oh! You have a crush! That explains it!” He said “Shut up!” I said laughing and drinking my drink while looking at Chan, until he noticed my stare, which was when I turned to face my book again.

I got my test back and immediately ran to the café after school. I went up to the counter and sat down. “Well hello, stressful student, what will it be today?” Chan asked “The recipe for THE Bang Chan drink!” I answered, causing Chan to laugh “Was it that good?” He asked “Was it drugs?” I asked jokingly “No, but it’s just as addicting.” He winked “If you like it so much, I can teach you how to make it some time, but then you won’t need me.” He said pouting, making me blush “But I shall, since it will mean your happiness and I’m willing to sacrifice my happiness for yours, as yours is mine.” He added, dramatically. “Drama queen.” I joked “Besides I won’t be making it on my own all the time obviously.” I defended “Ok. So next Sunday? Around 9?” He asked as I nodded, he smiled before going to another table to get their order.

The cafe doesn’t open till 11am so me and Chan had plenty of time for the drink, but I arrived earlier since I didn’t want to be late. “Oh, you’re already here, I have to put some of these napkins in the dispensers.” Chan said as I entered the cafe. “Do you want some help?” I asked “Sure.” He smiled before I put my bag down and helped him out till we were all done preparing the cafe. “All done.” He smiled and looked around proudly “So, do you want a break before we start or?” He asked as I shook my head no “If you don’t want one, it’s not needed.” I replied.

“Then let’s get down to it.” He smiled before we went behind the counter. He started describing the ingredients and what they’re good for and why he puts them in his “Bang Chan Special”. After that, he began the process as I tried to mentally take notes of what he was doing. When he finished, he smiled at me and asked “You think you can make it by yourself?”. “It can’t be that hard.” I laughed as I tried to recall the process.

As i reached out for a glass, so did Chan, causing our hands to accidentally touch and us to awkwardly pull them away, blushing.

After I made the drink, very successfully may I add, we still had time before the cafe opened so we sat down and talked till it did. Chan talked about 3racha a lot and how he’s always liked music and he feels like music is a gift that has been given to him. The way he talked about it was very mesmerizing and I couldn’t help stating with probably literal heart eyes. When the clock struck 11am, Chan got to work and I went home to study and to write down the recipe so I wouldn’t forget.

“Hey, drama queen.” I said as Chan came to get mine and Changbin’s order. “Hello, my one-day assistant.” He said with a smile “What would you two nerds like?” He added “I’ll get a coffee as dark as me.” Changbin answered “One milk with sugar coming up.” Chan joker “Haha, very funny...now get me an iced Americano.” Changbin said with an unamused expression on his face. “And for you, kind customer?” Chan asked, looking at me “I’ll have The Bang Chan Special.” I answered smiling “Awww, you need me in the end after all. You know it and you still order.” Chan said, fake flustered “Such a drama queen.” I laughed “One iced Americano and one Bang Chan Special coming up!” He replied before disappearing behind the counter.

After that day, I got home and sat down at my desk.

What I’m trying to get at is that sometimes my replies can take awhile, sometimes they won’t take long at all - it’s not anything against you, it’s more about my mood. I’ll drop threads sometimes, but I’ll try to let you know when I do. Please extend the same courtesy to me. I’ll usually give a reason, but you have NO obligation to, you do you, honey, I get it!

VI. STYLE Lit and multi-para are my personal favorites to write with, but I’m willing to do really anything! One-liners, shorter replies, longer replies, etc. I play to your tune. Getting this out of the way here: You don’t need to try to match my length! I write a lot, and I always prefer quality over quantity. If there’s anything wrong with my reply at any point (I get a detail about the character wrong, I mess up pronouns, etc.) just let me know, I’ll be sure to fix it. I don’t mind if your English isn’t great, especially if it’s not your first language, as long as I get what you’re trying to say, we’ll be fine.

VII. NO-GOES I’m under 18, asexual, and frankly SUPER uncomfy with writing smut. The build up to all of that is fine, so long as you’re comfortable. I’m fine with our muses having sex, it’s just not something I’m willing to write. The curtain will fall, we’ll give ‘em some privacy. Gore is fine, violence is fine, and angst is WELCOME.

VIII. TAGS All Elif’s tags begin with the symbol ✵. All Evren’s tags begin with the symbol ❃. All the OOC tags/tags that apply to both of them begin with the symbol ❂. IV. My activity is NOT consistent.  I am infamous for blog hopping.  I have literally replied to some starters / replies two years+ after they were originally written.  I am not fast.  If I am fast, it’s by some small miracle and perfect storm of brain, muse and free time.  It will not last.

V. I’m 39.  I have kids, cats, dogs, guinea pigs; I am in college, I have a household to take care of and I have many physical and mental handicaps that can affect my ability to function and write, including but not limited to rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, ganglion cysts, torn meniscus, migraines, hypothyroidism, PMDD, nerve damage, herniated disc, ADHD, depression, anxiety, C-PTSD and severe insomnia.  

                         Roleplay is something I do for fun.  

                                 If it isn’t fun, I don’t do it.  

                                        If it’s stressing me out, I’ll avoid it.  

VI. I do graphic commissions.  

         I run @tuppencetrinkets where I post the millions of screencaps and 200x100 icons that I make.  The resources are free but donations are always appreciated as I pay about $40 in hosting / program fees a month.   My commissions are always pay what you can.  I hate setting prices because I want everyone to have pretties if they want them and I don’t know what anyone can afford at any given time.  I do everything from base icons to edited icons, backgrounds, headers, dividers, promos, videos, you name it.  I try to be quick with turnaround but again – sometimes I just can’t be.

VII.  I am fine with plotting things out in advance or winging it.  I really don’t care, whatever you are more comfortable with is fine with me.

              I like all kinds of plots.  I like fluffy things, slice of life, broships, frenemies, enemies, familial, found family, long arcing, one shot throwaway, dark and twisted, you name it plots.  I will not write n*ncon or anything nsfw themed /even hinted at with minor characters and I won’t write any explicit child death etc. but most everything else is fair game.

X. I use icons, headers, promos etc. that I make myself 99% of the time.  Please do not use any of my edited graphics.  All base icons I use are free and available on my resource blog.  

XI. I use small text and my icons are 200x100 with empty space to make them 540x130 so that they don’t stretch out on mobile.  I prefer not heavily edited replies in terms of font variance and colors but really don’t care that much.
