A Monkey on the Outback
“but that which was the pleasantest surprise, was a largish clump of what in England we should not look for in a garden, yet what once filled in England the soul of Linnaeus with delight, covered over with its golden bloom—gorse; the seed whence it was raised taken from a common near Nottingham.” (Richard Howitt describes weed gorse growing at Yallambee, from Impressions of Australia Felix,…

Victoria Bekiempis, Hugo Lowell, and Léonie Chao-Fong at The Guardian:
Hope Hicks, Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign press secretary, broke into tears on Friday while testifying in the ex-president’s New York criminal hush-money trial, hours after she described his complete control over the campaign. Hicks, who cut a skittish figure in Judge Juan Merchan’s courtroom, is a key prosecution witness. She described Trump campaign staffers’ panic when a recording emerged in which Trump bragged about groping women. “This was a crisis” for his presidential bid, she said, describing the sentiment among the campaign staff.
Hicks also placed Trump squarely at the center of his campaign media strategy, telling jurors “we were all just following his lead”. The testimony marks a turning point for prosecutors, as she is the first Trump staffer with intimate knowledge of Trump’s campaign to testify about his alleged misconduct. Prosecutors allege that he tried to use payoffs to bury stories that could harm his candidacy. While her name has come up at various points during the trial, Hicks’s placement of Trump in the middle of this alleged media strategy is a stunning development. “Who overall was responsible for branding strategy?” prosecutor Matthew Colangelo asked. “I would say that Mr Trump was responsible,” Hicks said. “He deserves the credit for the different messages that the campaign focused on in terms of the agenda that he put forth.”
Hicks – who reportedly had a close relationship with Trump until her anger about the January 6 insurrection surfaced – was clearly uncomfortable. When Hicks walked to the witness stand on Friday in the ex-president’s New York criminal hush-money trial, he traced her with his eyes as she passed him. Hicks, a willowy figure who crossed into the well with small steps, had a quavering voice as she introduced herself to jurors. “My name is Hope Charlotte Hicks, and my last name is spelled H-I-C-K-S,” she said. Unsure the mic was picking up her voice, she said: “I’m really nervous.” Hicks, who was repeatedly interviewed by Robert Mueller due to her longtime proximity to Trump, also served in the White House as his communications director. When Hicks was questioned about the Access Hollywood tape that leaked in early October 2016 – in which Trump notoriously boasted that when a man is famous, he can “grab [women] by the pussy” – jurors were shown a transcript of the tape.
Asked what her first reaction was to receiving an email from a Washington Post reporter about the tape, Hicks said she was “very concerned” about the contents of the email, and the lack of time to respond. She says she forwarded the email with the subject line: “URGENT WashPost query” to others in the campaign. “It was a damaging development,” Hicks said. “[The] consensus among us that this was damaging – this was a crisis.” Former tabloid honcho David Pecker – whom prosecutors said colluded with Trump and Michael Cohen to bury stories that could hurt his campaign – said Hicks was present at the trio’s summer 2015 Trump Tower meeting.
[,,,]
Hicks was also asked on Friday about a media inquiry from the Wall Street Journal, which was running a story in early November 2016 about AMI’s purchase of Daniels and McDougals’ stories – and failure to run them. Hicks said that she thought she had spoken with Trump after getting this inquiry.
Hope Hicks took the stand on Friday in the People of New York v. Trump election interference trial, and during her time on the stand, she described the period in the imminent aftermath of the release of the infamous 2005 Access Hollywood tape in which he was bragging about sexual assault (and not mere "locker room talk" like he described it as) was one that nearly ended Donald Trump's campaign.

Gena Rowlands and Winona Ryder
Armin Mueller-Stahl and Giancarlo Esposito
Béatrice Dalle and Isaach De Bankolé
Paolo Bonicelli and Roberto Benigni
Matti Pellonpäá
Night on Earth (Jim Jarmusch, 1991) Cast: Gena Rowlands, Winona Ryder, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Giancarlo Esposito, Rosie Perez, Isaach De Bankolé, Béatrice Dalle, Roberto Benigni, Paolo Bonacelli, Matti Pellonpää, Kari Väänänen, Sakari Kuosmanen, Tomi Salmela. Screenplay: Jim Jarmusch. Cinematography: Frederick Elmes. Film editing: Jay Rabinowitz. Music: Tom Waits People don't smoke in taxis anymore -- at least in tobacco-hostile America -- so Jim Jarmusch's Night on Earth probably evokes a kind of nostalgie de la boue in smokers or ex-smokers. Everyone lights up in the five segments of the movie, although Los Angeles resident Victoria Snelling (Gena Rowlands) at least chides her driver, Corky (Winona Ryder), for indulging the habit -- only to light up her own after Corky sarcastically refers to her as "Ma." Perhaps Victoria's advice crosses some kind of line between passenger and cabbie. In Rome, it will be the cabbie (Roberto Benigni) who crosses the line, persuading his priest-passenger (Paolo Bonacelli) to hear his taxicab confession, an experience that will bring about the priest's demise. In New York, passenger YoYo (Giancarlo EspositoP even becomes the cabbie, taking over the wheel from the incompetent driver, new immigrant Helmut Grokenberger (Armin Mueller-Stahl). At least in Paris and Helsinki the old conventions remain, although Isaach De Bankolé's driver is infuriated at the liberties some of his passengers take with him, especially the well-to-do Africans who taunt him for his lowly Côte d'Ivoire origins. In Helskini there's a kind of working-class solidarity between Mika (Matti Pellonpää) and his drunken passengers, one of whom has not only just been fired but has also learned that his daughter is pregnant and his wife has left him. What do all of these slices of life add up to? That's one of the charms of reflecting on an anthology film like Night on Earth, in which discrete segments seem to echo and enlarge one another. One of the reasons that taxicabs are so effective a setting for movies is that they can become crucibles for temporary relationships, moments out of time and space that seem more freighted with meaning than they really are -- Benigni's cabbie makes the resemblance of taxi to confessional booth part of his appeal to the priest. Put together five such moments, in five distinct cities, and you have something that looks like a statement about our common humanity. Although each segment neatly evokes the character of its particular city -- the glitz of LA, the grubby hopefulness of New York, the weary cosmopolitanism of Paris, the religion-steeped past and skeptical present of Rome, the chilly Cold War-haunted between-two-worlds quality of Helsinki -- the space and time inside their taxicabs seems oddly universal. That's what I love about Jarmusch's movies: Long after you've watched them, you're still savoring the details while bemused by the whole.

NORTHWESTERN DERROTA A UTEP CON UN DOMINIO TOTAL EN LA SEGUNDA PARTE DEL JUEGO
EVANSTON, Ill.

McCarthy Slammed for Blackballing
LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), Jan. 24, 2023.--Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.) slammed House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for keeping former House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) off the House Intel Committee and keeping Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) off the House Foreign Relations Committee.  Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) blocked  Rep. Paul Gossar (R-Az.) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) from serving on their committees for controversial statements.  Whether Spartz recognizes or not, McCarthy has a right to keep Schiff far removed the House Intel Committee, a place since 2018, he abused his Article 1 authority to use the committee to go after 76-year-old former President Donald Trump.  During the height of the Special Counsel Mueller investigation, Schiff used his committee to corroborate claims that Trump colluded with the Kremlin to win the 20016.
No one in Congress was more partisan and biased against Trump than Schiff, using the Intel Committee to corroborate the profusion of fake news stories, largely leaked by Schiff, to the New York Times and Washington Post.  Schiff routinely gave the Times and Post fake information about Trump’s ties to the Kremlin.  Schiff had no problems doing anything possible to influence tthe outcome of the Mueller investigation. “As I spoke against it on the House floor two years ago, I will not support this charade again,” Spartz said.  “Speaker McCarthy needs to stop ‘bread and circuses’in Congress and start governing for change,” Spartz said.  Spartz forgets Pelosi’s blackballing of Gosar and Taylor-Greene for less legitimate reasons.  How could any Republican ignore how Schiff abused his Article 1 authority to use he House Intelligence Committee to go after Trump.
Even after 78-year-old former FBI Director Robert Mueller delivered his final report March 23, 2019 disappointing Democrats, Schiff insisted he had all the intel needed to convict Trump of colluding with the Russian Federation. Leaking fake intel with the Times and Post for nearly two years, Schiff should have been wrung up on ethical charges for using his committee to build a fake case against Trump.  Schiff told the press repeatedly he had categorical proof that Trump conspired with 70-year-old President Russian President Vladimir Putin to elect Trump in 2016.  Schiff never accepted Trump’s presidency, using his authority on the Intel Committee to build a case for impeachment.  Schiff was the most vociferous Democrat demanding that an unnamed whistleblower in the State Department said Trump tried to blackmail Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky into investigating 80-year-old President Joe Biden.
No one at the time understood Biden’s corrupt relations with Ukraine, landing his son Hunter an $83,000 a month job, along with his friend Devon Archer, on a corrupt Ukrainian natural gas company board.  Biden’s irrational attachment to Ukraine begins to make sense knowing his wheeling-and-dealing in Ukraine while serving as former President Barack Obama’s Vice President.  Can you imagine, Biden headed Biden’s Ukraine corruption task force and proceeded to collect millions for his son and his brother Jim Biden?  Yet Biden’s past involvement is Ukraine was never questioned in why he joined Ukraine’s war against the Kremlin.  Biden ended decades of cooperative relations with Russia to support the most corrupt country in Europe, seeking EU and NATO membership.  Biden’s foreign policy wrecked U.S.-Russian relations, supplying Ukraine unlimited cash-and-weapons.
So, when Spartz criticizes McCarthy for keeping Schiff far away from the House Intel Committee, it’s for good reason, because Schiff will continue supplying the New York Times and Washington Post fake news stories.  Schiff’s only concern is helping corrupt President Joe Biden get reelected in 2024.  Where was Spartz when Schiff ran the House Intel Committee like his private Democrat Mickey Mouse Club. No one in Congress leaked more to the Times and Post than Schiff once he became House Intel Chairman.  Only 63-year-old former FBI Director James Comey may have exceeded Schiff in leaking fake intel to the Times and Post.  Yet when Trump finally fired Comey May 8, 2017, Pelosi and Schiff went crazy, screaming obstruction of justice, demanding a Special Counsel to investigate Trump.  Spartz showed she’s closely aligned with Democrats ripping McCarthy.
McCarthy should stick to his guns when it comes to keeping Schiff off the House Intel Committee for egregious abuse of his Article 1 authority.  When it comes to Rep. Ilhan Omar, McCarthy has less of a case to keep her off the House Foreign Relations Committee.  When it comes who’s more dangerous to the U.S. Congress, clearly Schiff has committed egregious abuses all with Pelosi’s blessings, anything to retaliate against Trump.  “Two wrongs do not make a right,” Spartz said, with regard to McCarthy’s decision of keep Schiff away from the Intel Committee. Spartz refuses to see the damage done to Congress by Schiff’s leadership on the Intel Committee.  McCarthy should stick to his guns to keep Schiff away from any place of influence knowing how he abused his authority in the House Intel Committee.  Spartz needs to look at the facts, not her vendetta with McCarthy.
