SCORPIONSโHEIL METALMEISTERS!
The kings of kraut metal have been on tour for many months now, much of it being here in the U.S. with Iron Maiden supporting. They came here in July to blow Loverboy and Foreigner off of the Day on the Green stage and returned on September 4th to the Oakland Colesium Arena with Girlschool and Iron Maiden opening the show. Rudolf Schenker was a madman, throwing his Flying V about and of course Klaus Maine was a leaping, screaming maniac running about the stage. Mathias Jabs was playing better than ever and they all had to do the famous Scorpions-drop-to-the-floor because it was so intensely metallic. The following Monday, on September 6th, Vicious Rumors headlined at the Old Waldorfโs Metal Monday show and when the bands all played, the crowd had left, who comes strolling in but Rudy and Klaus. Stopping in San Francisco for a video tape session on Alcatraz, they apparently were being shown around some of the local clubs by a Video West represenative. Instantly the scene at the Waldorf became an autographing scenario and they were escorted by the Video West guy to the I-Beam, a new wave disco (which didโnt impress the Scorps a bit). Along the way, I got a chance to talk to them about thier enormous success other thing which Iโve recounted in the following interview:ย
MM: How has the response youโve been getting here in the United States?
Klaus: Very good, weโve sold out many concerts on our American tour and we have been received enthusiastically everywhere weโve been so far.
MM: You put out album after album in the RCA label, yet you didโnt tour the U.S. until you got a deal with Mercury recordsโwhy?
Rudy: They told us โoh well send you to America after this next albumโ and they kept telling us that but they were all talk and never did do as they said. Weโd put out another album and theyโd tell us to wait until the next one is out and then theyโd say that album isโnt selling well enough and that we have to wait until the next one.
