ANVIL CHORUS
Yes it’s true. Anvil Chorus is now a 6 piece outfit with the addition of ace keyboardist Gené Fenellie (this is the correct spelling) and the result is a ‘larger sound’—that is, the songs sound fuller and, well, Bigger! Some fans are going “yuk—keyboards in all thier songs”—but those of better intllect can see (hear) what a great asset to the band Geré is. Thaen Rasmussen (this is the correct spelling) is still a rip roaring guitarist, more so now than ever and the rhythm section is still very good so metal maniacs everywhere should be sure to get Anvil Chorus’ debut single ‘Blondes in Black’ & ‘Once Again’ while they’re still available.

LIPS TALKS!
While at the Reading Fest, our boy Ron was out getting drunk and running about with tape recorder in hand waiting for an oppertunity to interview all of his favorite metal gods. Though his band was’nt playing Reading, Lips, guitarist and madman from Canadian metalmongers Anvil was back stage and stopped to talk with Ronald…..
Ron: I heard you were headbanging up front for Gary Moore’s set…
Lipps: Oh yeah I love Gary’s playing he’s great…Boy I’m having a good ol time…getting quite intoxicated back at the beer tent.
R: When’s the next album coming out?
L: You should be expecting a new album a little after Christmas time and then we’ll probably go on a U.K. tour with Iron Maiden…I’m not sure about the United States because we have’nt got a record contract over there as yet. We just got a new contract for Japan which will go over really really well and we’re waiting for that U.S. break because we really want to get down there and rock. It’s wierd…it’s like we’re so close but we’re so far away…
R: yeah——you’ve never playyed around the U.S. yet you’re over here in England smashing things up…have you at least played in New York or anything?
L: Well we just played in New Jersey (oh boy) and as they’d say it there—it keecked ayss. It was really good. We heavily metalized there….it’s strange like over in Britain, metal is on a semi-down but back home in North America it’s on the upswing and we’re just getting into it.
R: We’re always last…
L: But hey man heavy metal will never die anyways cause we’re like….Bangers!! Look around, it’s Banger City..
R: Have you ever seen so many headbangers in your entire life?
L: No way—it’s like a sea of denim and leather out there.
R: Thirty thousand of them!!

MORE METAL:
PRIEST—METALLICA and more!
[A wavy line divides the page]
Judas Priest will be playing at the Cow Palace on November 19th in support of “Screaming for Vengance”, thier 9th album. The new material is a grade of heavier metal then what you heard on “Point of entry”, which I considered to be the complete downfall of JP. Though “Screaming” is’nt everything I’d hope for from the Priest, it’s certainly a step up from the low point in thier recording history that they reached last year. Metallica are a lot from LA but fortunately nobody has told them that! They sound like a killer European band yet theyre in the same town that spit forth such comedian acts as Motley Crue, Bitch, Steeler and other cretinous offenders of intelligence. Definitely one of the Best bands to come out of California right now.
Soft White Underbelly came through the Old Waldorf again last August and I’m told they tore the place apart with a lot of thier killer old stuff. The only good BOC show your ever going to see again will have to be one of thier rare SWU appearances as the concert hall Cult show is likely to be watered down with all thier new stuff. Is it true? has Trust broken up? we’ve never even gotten any Trust pictures or anything to print on them and thier one of the greatest metal bands to come out of Europe. By the way, in case any of you have’nt got the message, Gary Moore is The Guitar God.

ANVIL IS SOLID METAL!
ANVIL—Marquee in London September 2nd, 1982
It’s funny—I came 6000 miles to see my favorite bands (like Angelwitch, Diamond Head, Raven, etc.) and the heaviest of all the metal bands I’ve seen came to England from my side of the Atlantic, I speak of Canadian metal-mongers, Anvil. They were so fucking heavy and caused to much headbanging that I realised that This is what I expected to get from the British bands I originally came here to see. In fact, most of these foreign bands were better than the English ones so far (Diamond Head and Iron Maiden being the only outstanding exceptions), though I have yet to see some of my favorites of the U.K. metallers. Bow Wow was the best, Baron Rojo was the most interesting and on top of it all, Anvil was the Heaviest. From the opening track “Metal on Metal” it was no bolds barred kick ass metal in an all out attack on the audience’s craniums and I headbanged like I never have before in my life. To tell the truth, I never listened to the 1st Anvil LP that much as it seemed rather monotonous but as a live act, (and a bit to the tipple I imagine-ed.) this band is fucking great!!! Thier heaviness is better demonstrated on thier 2nd album, but anyway, I practically came close to suffering whiplash from headbanging to such pounders as “666”, “March of the Crabs” and a dozen others. Thier massive set was dominated Lips’ wild guitar playing and the pounding of Rob Reiner’s powerful drumming. Lips is the real show as he sings and throws in tons of guitar solos wherever possible and is a total metal fiend. See the Lips interview in this issue.

usual set (plus ‘Bijou Pleasurette’) and one new song, “Heavy blues”, which has a self descriptive title. Keyboard player Andy Nye stood at stage right and the rhythm guitarist was hidden behind some Marshall stacks. Schenker closed with classics “Into the Arena” and the cataclysmic “Lost Horizon”. The stage was still wet when they returned for the encore of “Doctor Doctor” and Michael slipped and fell flat on his back (he even stopped playing) and after a second, he laughed it off and got back on his good. Gary Barden remeber all the lyrics (of course) and sang surprisingly well for someone who came on in such short notice and with so little practice. “Rock Bottom” finished the set and the Reading Festival. It could have been a disaster for MSG but Michael and crew admirably defeated all the problems that threatened them. A great ending to a fantastic festival—the absolute heaviest concert ever—anywhere. Don’t miss next years!!! I won’t………… (you shithead, Ron!)

Leonard “Crazy man” Haze did a pounding solo and the rain started coming down. Y&T encored with a slowie “Forever” and it started to pour—but that did’nt dampen thier appeal, many considered thier performance the highlight of Reading. The boys from Baron Rojo and Bow Wow, along with many more metalmongers from foreign shores, consider good ol’ Y&T to be absolutely ace—so Bay Area bangers should feel luckyy to have these Metal Gods in thier own backyard. They even rushed home right after Reading to do a gig in Petaluma(?)!
The crowd was getting restless for Michael (God) Schenker to make his appearance with the latest line up of MSG. There were rumours going about that Graham Bonnet was kicked out after a warm up gig in Sheffield on Friday night and sure enough, Gary Barden hit the stage yelling “surprise surprise”. Michael Schenker came out and stopped the rain and with a two hours of practice for Gary Barden, MSG burst onto the Reading stage. Michael was noticably drunk and there were obvious fuck ups (the solo in ‘Cry for the Nations’) but they put on a good show anyway. Ted McKenna is a great replacement for Cozy Powell, his style is very different but he’s just as good and heavy and more interesting to watch. MSG played thier

boring BOOGIE shit. Status Quo. Slade. Ralph. Wretch.
Marillion played sub-Genesis sleep worthy songs (singer even sounded a bit like Peter Gabriet).
Then came the ugly ones—Twisted Sister, who put on a good show (I guess) and start to get the ol’ bottle chuck treatment before Dee Snider pointed out to the unruly crowd that the only ones that were getting pelted were the punters up at the front. The missiles more less ceased and TS went over pretty well. Thier songs are pretty dull and they can’t really play very well but there is a blam rock revival going on (oh no), so Twisted was able to get away with being fools. Thier LP producer, Pete Way, joined them on stage along w/ ol’ budds Lemmy and Fast Eddie for the encore of “It’s only rock and roll”. Wilko Johnson was only rock and roll and probably will never get above playing rehashed rock (I mean R&R) from ancient days. Dave Edmonds was’nt much of an improvement, so it was up to those Bay Area boys, Y&T, to get the crowd going. Y&T were thier own inimitable selves and they really went down a storm (it rained, too!)They plaed the familiar set of songs from “Earthshaker” as well as new tunes off of thier “Black Tiger” album. They rocked the Reading Fest with “Open Fire” and “Black Tiger” then Dave Meniketti went into several minutes of guitar improvision before “Rescue Me” and “Squeeze”.

BLACKFOOT JOINS IRON MAIDEN FOR ENCORE PLAYING “TUSH”

stomping grounded of the beast, and they came back to thier home turf with killing in mind. Two year ago thier Reading Fest appearance was a magic moment and tonight’s was too. Bruce was in fine voice and the banded brilliant. They tore the place down with “Transylvania” which included solos from Dave Murray and Clive Burr. They played many new numbers but I enjoyed the old classics like “Phantom of the Opera”, “Running Free” and “Sanctuary”. They came back and did “Drifter” as thier second encore complete with all that sad “ee oh de oh de do” bullshit and then they came out again with Blackfoot for a rousing version of “Tush”—the crazed throng of headbangers went nuts! A great ending to an incredible day.
******************Sunday***********************
The last day at Reading was a let down—just a bunch of mediocre or over the hill bands. First out was Terraplane who were’nt bad but were’nt very good either. Chinatown came on with thier Americanized semi-metal and though there were worse acts at Reading, they immediately received a barrage of eggs (until some monsterous roadies retailiated on the area of the chuckers). They played some average hard rock tunes including “Hell or high water” which was about the Argys and the Falklands and s oforth. Spider came on and played that awful all washed up incredibly

imate virtuoso! They encored with the slow “Parisene Walkway” and a speedy “Back on the streets” before ending thier show. Gary Moore is great!!!
Blackfoot hit the stage and the crowd was on thier feet, singing along and waving confederate flags (really!). For some, they were the hightlight of the show—they’re probably more rampantly popular here in Britain than they are in the States.
There were rumors that the Tyger of Pan Tang would cancel due to a mythical car crash that was conjured up so they would’nt have to disgrace themselves at Reading but the press caught wind of the scheme and they had to show up. Just as it had been feared, they came out like crap. They played material from thier overly hyped (overly pop) new album “The Cage”, and there was just no way they could win over the crowd. John Syke’s replacement fell short—a very inadequate guitarist. Ho hum………
Headliners Iron Maiden put on quite an extravaganza with a huge light show and stage set up (remember that tour they did with Kiss? well it went to thier heads) that was a massive production. Red devils popped out of the stage and a giant Eddie lurched over and axed them. It was great, perhaps a bit much, but worth it for the bands performance. I was somewhat disappointed by thier show at Day on the Green but then they were opening the show with a very short set and at 12:00——now they were on top of the bill and lusting for blood! Britain (and Reading) is the

This clone band has all the recycled riffs that are neccessary plus two scrappy, lustable girls singing out front. The best looking sisters in rock and roll are the focus of this band (like Bitch but there’s 2 of them and better looking) the Hammond sisters can actually sing too and like Heart gone HM, they had the crowd panting. It was definitely entertainment time and they put on a nice and sleazy show for Reading. The crowd got bored before long with the plodding of this band, started chucking projectiles and also forced the comedian of the stage—they wanted something to kick thier ass! And on came God—I mean Gary, the fastest guitarist alive! Gary Moore’s band of all stars: Neil Murray (bass), Ian Paice (drums), Tommy Eyre (keyboards) and Charlie Huhn (stun guitar and vocals) was absolutely amazing! Thier excellent musicianship allowed fo rGary’s powerful guitar playing to come to the forefront and blow away all the other Reading guitarist. He is just fantastic! Half the set was fast and new material like “End of the world” and “Rockin’ every night”. Gary sang a slow tune, “Wait until tomarrow” and they did a really heavy jam session in “Warhead” which included extended soloing and fucking killed! The ravaging guitarsolo “White Knuckles” preceeded “Rockin and Rollin” which Gary brutally tore into (obviously thinking of the Jet record executives who refused to release his last album) with a vengance. Gary Moore is amazing: lightning speed without comprimising precision—what an ult-

to win the crowd, Bow Wow ripped and showed themselves to be genuine Metal Gods! The Reading crowd was eventually receptive to the band from the rising sun as they were assaulted by such greats as “Youre Mine” and “Breakdown of the Earth” (from thier new LP “Warning from Stardust”) and thier theme song “We are Bow Wow”. They played numbers off fo thier “Asian  Volcano” LP along with the older classics like “Prelude”, “Get on our train” and “Signal Fire”. Real rump punting rock and roll—banzai style! The ultra tight poundings this band unleashed frmo the east, topped by the rocketing leads that Kyoji played made this a very impressive band. The raging hordes diddent want them to leave and they pelted the roadies with bottles and things (corncobs—no kidding), shouting BowWowBowWowBowWow (arf arf, Ron?) but the band was allowed no encore.
Shortly, the other stage was taken by the band that a lot of people were saving thier corncobs for, simply because they’ve been getting so much god damned TYPE. Well take my word for it now, OK? Rock Goddess were actually good—for once the hype was right! They were surprisingly heavy and could play thier instruments quite well. The singer was also an impressive guitarist and played some excellent solos (later I was surprised to find out that they are looking for another lead guitarist to be even heavier!). Though chiched riffs abounded, they were heavy and metal where Girlschool is merely hard rock. Because of the all female line up, the comparison has to be obvious, but they actually kicked ass!
It started to get warmer and the bands got weaker so I took a hike when Grand Prix’s total cliche wank rock songs came on. They’re wimp outs.
Next up were Bernie Torme’s Electric Gypsys who put on a good show while Torme threw in some slick solos. Then we’re back to shit rock agaiin with Ore, a bad pop version of Handsome Beast (who are dull enough) complete with a fat stupid singer.
Soon the crowd was drooling for some entertainment and what better is there than AC/DC with tits, nice ones too (you’re a pig, Ron), Cheetah!!!
