Games of 2022 For most of 2022, the video game industry was defined more by its controversies than its future. Microsoft desperately trying to acquire Activision Blizzard, a gaming company with its own set of controversies that involve sexual misconduct, and abuse towards its developers and employees, ultimately creating a toxic workplace; This also includes Ubisoft, is just One of the many things that stick out like a sore thumb when discussing anything involving the video games industry.
Although Some studios have unionized to combat crunch and toxic cultures, There were still various things that made this past year in the world of video games end with a bad taste in your mouth.
The google Stadia being Dead on arrival along with Babylon’s Fall, The controversy involving bayonetta 3 and its voice actress, Electronic arts and various other companies constantly pushing loot box gambling in video games, to the inclusion of NFTs into video games by square Enix just just a tip of the iceberg.
But that’s not what I am here for.
As much as negative this world can get, there are still some signs of hope and people who are out there creating ambitious, satisfying sequels of already established franchises to even creating engrossing, refreshing original titles that have been gracing our console of choice the minute we hit the start button.
Even with what is happening, the Nostalgia Roadtrip Network is dedicated to bringing you the best that we can do to bring a smile to your face by spotlighting these talented artist, composers, and musicians that have elevated our gaming experiences since we first learned to pick up a controller, hit a button on a keyboard or swiped across our phones.
This is why THIS STAGE of the Retro VGM Revival Hour is dedicated to the music from the various  games of 2022….

I’m sure this show is great but this idea that TLOU is a uniquely good story in the games industry and that this is the first good VG adaptation is very frustrating considering it’s coming after so many good video game shows and movies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You don’t see discussion about the video game curse in the Mario movie directs or press for Amazon’s upcoming God of War show… Saying “we’re not like those other video game stories, ours is actually good!” Is just a dumb ignorant take to pander to nongamers who don’t know better.

tuesday again 10/18/22
look i originally typed "placeholder" which somehow typo'd into "placegilder" and now i'm fascinated by what that concept could possibly be
listening
Romance Without Finance, covered? by? Charlie Parker. for something by one of the founding fathers of bebop it's remarkably difficult to find info on this song.
"wait a minute kay we didn't know you knew anything about jazz" i don't! just enough to be dangerous!
youtube
it's been stuck in my head bc of the lyrics
You so great and you so fine You ain't got no money you can't be mine It ain't no joke to be stone broke Baby you know I ain't lying when I say Romance without finance is a nuisance Please please baby give me some gold
cheers i'll drink to that bro

reading
sat by a river and read one and a half chapters of Mervyn Peake's Titus Groan, bc people keep telling me i would like Gormenghast and this is the first book in the trilogy. after which i threw it in my bag and forgot about it for the rest of the week. this is not a dunk on the book this is just how distractible i am. the style/voice/etc of Mervyn Peake could diplomatically be described as an acquired taste. not sure if i've acquired that taste yet. not that i am unfamiliar with a longwinded fantasy, i've just been reading very short things lately and am experiencing some whiplash.
Tumblr media
god we love a font. GOD we love a series of covers that link together. these come to me courtesy of a very nice old man's moving sale, which i happened upon in august? early september? at the end of the day when everything was free. ended up dumping the milk crate of tools in my trunk into the trunk proper and carrying off an overflowing milk crate of paperbacks like this.
-
watching
three! tv shows i like are dropping on a weekly basis im in hog heaven (andor, the vampires, chainsaw man)!!!
instead we're going to talk about Werewolf By Night, which was Fine. it's a little marvel halloween special starring one of the eleventy billion comics characters you've never heard of, directed by their longtime composer Michael Giacchino.
i am going to damn it with lukewarm praise and say it's Fine! it's automatically in the top tier marvel products for me bc the fact it is so clearly filmed on a soundstage works in its favor, bc it is one big nod to classic horror. not a pastiche, not a love letter, but many many many visual references. there was only one Joss Whedon Humor Marvel Moment (TM) which i appreciated. i have spent far, far worse hours with this franchise.
Tumblr media
excellent opening credits tho. not worth watching if you're a classic horror fan bc it will probably infuriate you, maybe worth watching if you've dropped off the marvel bandwagon and want to check and see if you still like it or not. this is up there with winter soldier for me as far as like. coherence of artistic vision and the ability to confidently tell one story, and it's still Just Okay as a whole.
-
playing
this was originally going to be a diatribe about human experimentation in fallout 4. yes yes we all know the vaults are human experiments. that's not what i'm talking about. i would like them to connect the dots between pre-war people vanishing off the street for military human experimentation and post-war vanishing off the street for...industry? experimentation a little more explicitly.
INSTEAD, i did something i never do, which was look for a game to play specifically for the tuesdaypost bc i wanted to talk about something in this slot. so off i went to the New & Noteworthy page.
Tumblr media
i played The Looker, which is a parody of awardwinning but insufferable puzzle game The Witness. i have not played The Witness bc i find it insufferable, but i have watched roommates play through chunks of it. The Looker is insufferable in a different way, where (spoilers behind rot13)
vg vf na ubhe ybat ohvyqhc gb n pbpx naq onyyf wbxr.
some of the puzzles are genuinely clever. the laser unfolding in a long sequence that felt like a real life hour made me cackle.
i don't know who this streamer is, or if he's secretly garbage or anything, but this video does contain some of the best bits of the game
youtube
it's about an hour and a half and it's free, what more could you want? the way its mechanics unfold is a successful parody of the highbrow puzzle game genre as a whole (imo), not just The Witness, so if you play this without knowing anything about The Witness do report back in pls
-
making fallow week. lots of things simmering away in the background, not a lot of photogenic things happening, many things that are easier to explain as a whole once they're done.

VG: 8, 20, 21!
8. A series you haven't played but are interested in trying
Ack! There are so many right now. God of War Ragnarok has my eye. Horizon. Baldur's Gate. Jedi Fallen Order. Never enough time! xD
20. A boss you think is really cool
ACO's WRITHING DREAD. Holy moly. So many things about that... I love her so much. And a heckin' hard fight. Usually I hate that, because I'm only there for the story, but something about Odyssey's combat system was more fun. Especially these ones you had to learn the strategy for.
21. A boss that was disapointing
ACO's Aspasia. Like so many things about the end of that game, I was really expecting more. I felt like she just spewed a bunch of random, grandiose babble that didn't really amount to anything sensical. Afterward I immediately reloaded and played it through a second time, because I thought I must be missing the mastermind behind all that fluff, but nope. Afterwards, all I could think about was that quote, "They muddy the water to make it seem deep." It feels like all they did there.
And I really felt like Deimos should have been there for that finale. Him sitting at home with Mater while I did that really made me roll my eyes. That scene would have been so much cooler with both siblings.

If you didn’t play Vanguard’s Shi No Numa and care about the Dark Aether storyline, this post is for you!
Okay so I know Shi No Numa came out for Vanguard weeks ago but I simply lacked the interest in playing it until very recently and after I completed that main quest I’m surprised I haven’t seen anybody talking about it because the things we learn in that story have some potentially very interesting implications for where we left off in the Cold War portion of the DA storyline.
Basically the main goal of the Shi No Numa quest is to help one of our DA entity allies Saraxis regain her lost memories so that she can remember how to find an artifact that will help us trap the DA entity Kortifex and stop him/the Nazis helping him from taking over the world.
And what I’m starting to piece together is that yeah, it’s probably not a coincidence that Saraxis has a similar name to Samantha Maxis and also shares a similar backstory (gaps in her memory) and even has some very similar personality traits (dry sense of humor, very clever and cunning, doesn’t trust easily, impulsive and quick to anger, sense of redemption).
It’s also likely not a coincidence that the overarching plot of VG zombies now seems to be trying to find a way to trap Kortifex within a device/artifact in order to prevent taking over the world… sounds a lot like the plot of Forsaken’s map to me.
But once you beat the boss fight on Shi No Numa and restore Saraxis’ memories (which now makes me curious if we’ll have to do the same for Sam in a future game/map) she tells you about her past as Kortifex’s wife, and how she had a child who she tried to hide from Kortifex until he found out.
This was the only screenshot I could grab from my own playthrough:
Tumblr media
It’s also worth noting that the reason why Saraxis had to hide this child from Kortifex was because he didn’t want a potential successor to his throne to threaten his power in the Dark Aether.
Saraxis doesn’t ever specify what exactly Kortifex did to their child, but I think I’ve got a pretty good guess…
Tumblr media
Don’t ask me how this makes sense, that’s honestly kind of a pointless question to ask given Samantha’s entire backstory and the fact that these are inhuman gods/demons/entities who have their own set of rules for how any of this works. It answers more questions about Sam’s story in CW than it does create them.
It also may or may not be a coincidence that this map has a side quest similar to the Max Ammo side quests on the Zombies Chronicles maps where it plays a version of Samantha’s theme song and shows her little statue from the old Aether timeline.
TLDR: Samantha Maxis is most likely a child of Saraxis and Kortifex from VG zombies.
Also bonus! Krafft mentions Alistair Rhodes from the BO4 Chaos storyline and his work, so that likely means the Chaos storyline is confirmed the same canon universe as the DA storyline!

23 pizza tower vg asks
23. A “Wow” moment of awe
tbh, when i played pizza tower, i didnt personally have any moments of awe necessarily, but i do remember the first moment in which the whimsy of the game really jumped out at me, and it was the first really extended barrel section in crust cove; i remember literally saying out loud, like, "oh my GOD this game is so SILLY" and giggling my ass off. playing through war and the final boss fight was fucking great though; if theres anything resembling awe, thatd probably be it. i guess since im pro-spoilers and watched the whole game before playing it i removed that potential moment of true awe for myself, but i dont mind. i liked knowing what to expect!
