how does antiquing work in Star Trek?

like, okay, there's no scarcity Because Replicators. great! except you can't replicate an antique, not the real thing. probably some AMAZING reproductions- 24th-century historical costumers must be having the time of their lives, because as great as modern synthetic baleen is, imagine what you could do with a machine that literally replicates the exact molecular structure of the same! or that extinct flax that made medieval linen so great! -but I know antique collectors. there's nothing like the feeling of something you know so many other people have loved for centuries

is it like a barter system? do you go to the antique "shop" with things passed down in your family or found in the equivalent of a Facebook buy-nothing group, and trade what you have for what the history nerd running the place has based on your respective interests?

is Brimfield like a giant swap meet? could I go with, say...a big bag full of my grandmother's chunky 1950s costume jewelry and trade it for 1880s blouse waists because the stall owner wants the former and I want the latter? equivalent value wouldn't matter- what's value, beyond how much you treasure something? nobody's got rent to make or bills to pay, after all

do people become antiques "dealers" just for the thrill of the hunt and the pleasure of matching an object to someone who will love it? you don't have to work, after all; you can spend your whole life searching the world for rare treasures if that brings you joy

Ginger how did you come up with so many Gavin outfits for your fic I'm fighting for my life to find good outfits for him for my aaron/smartass/gavin wip rn 😭

GODSPEED COMRADE!!! the constant struggle for survival as a gavin-stylist truly never ceases.....

lmao it was actually really hard - i ran out of juice after about five or six and ended up begging for help via tumblr and got some Excellent advice from @mar-the-magician and @glassbearclock lol 🤠🤠

but the way i found worked best was to base each outfit on something i've worn/currently wear irl, either an individual piece of clothing (like the black miniskirt from the very end, which i do own although the real version is actually a pair of shorts lol) or the whole thing (like the one w the blue top and orange trousers) - i found that MUCH easier than just trying to spontaneously imagine Something Cool To Wear 🤔🤔 or if you're trying to fit an outfit to a scenario, then ig i would try to:

a) imagine what i would wear to that event, then try to juice that up to fit how you see gavin

b) what's a standard/familar/stereotypical/iconic/recognisable outift that someone might wear to that event? e.g. wearing a massive hat to the races at ascot, a stripy shirt on a gondola in venice, a suit and tie to a business meeting etc - is there a way to adapt or put a particular spin on a recognisable cliché?

c) does the character have any particular things that they need to realistically do in the scene? e.g. if they're about to go to an obstacle course, are they the type to dress appropriately, or inappropriately for what they're about to do? do they show up in high heels and a mini dress and then it's a comedy moment? did they know what they were going to do when they got dressed? did they know and/or not care bc it's all about The Aesthetic?

d) does the character have any particular things/parts of their body that they especially want to highlight/diminish? how do they respond to the movement of their clothes as a feature of their personality? do they love wearing crop tops bc they like showing off their tummy? do they wear lots of flowy trousers and long skirts bc they like swishing around? do they only ever wear jeans bc they don't like how their legs look?
