Cringe is dead, let's do fic recs for our friends and our selves. I'll start.
DF Fics written by my friends (and me) that I still think about all the time:
By @oddeyesight ((Ao3 account))
ya'aburnee (General)
Notha and Uaanta find an interesting object, digging around Notha's previous lab.
The song + the fic are simultaneously very sad and very sweet. The buildup to the ending in particular, the crescendo and then the quietness of it.
chiaroscuro (Teen and Up)
Hero talks about their adventures in HHD, and Notha is reminded of an unpleasant meeting that happened so long ago.
And on the complete other side of the spectrum: Fear! Terror! Orpheus and Eurydice themes! Still kind of about grief but in a distinctly more "I'm afraid to lose you" way. 10/10 I go feral every time.
~!~
By @valorousowl ((Ao3 Account))
Dive Deep (General Audiences)
Notha Ly'Ehr is determined to save her friend. Remthalas is determined to trick their friends into killing him. Whatever it takes, this time would be different.
I keep coming back to this because the emotions are very sharp and real in a way that I can't quite describe here; you really have to read it for yourself. Notha's entire characterization is tragic, but in a way that I find deeply compelling.
Unspoken Names (Mature)
Aegis is well acquainted with Pandora. It isn't hard for him to suss out who Aspar actually is. He'll keep his mouth shut, for a price. Aspar may be desperate and lonely enough to pay it.
Overall lower stakes than my usual fare, but still packs a real whallop of emotional resonance, especially the part where Aegis tells Aspar that he's the one who should know better. I am physically incapable of being normal about Aspar and the softness and sadness of Aegis trying to be nice to him.
~!~
By @7yd1a ((Ao3 Account))
Return, Dear Light (Explicit)
This one is about Jaania living in the tower with the rest of the Villain Rehab Club, but really it's about her learning to feel again, and to forgive. Also she bones (haha) Alexander with an icicle; pretty fun use of healing ice magic I think! I don't know if there will ever be a continuation, but the characterization and the speed at which information about the characters is effectively conveyed is a lot of fun to watch unfold.
~!~
By @mismagireve ((Ao3 Account, though they are pretty much done with DF as a fandom.))
Somewhere Ages And Ages Hence (Mature)
According to Swordhaven's record systems, shortly after you fled into the forest, you were beset upon by wolves, and your remains were found hours later by a Rose researcher who had been on his way into the city for work that morning when he stumbled across the grisly scene of your demise. You are, for all intents and purposes, free of everything that was plaguing you now that you're dead and gone. You can't help but wonder if your new life hiding in the woods pretending to be dead and playing nanny to a Rose cultist's child could be counted as freedom.
I'm always up for stories about normal people in completely bonkers situations treated as, if not normal, then at least livable; I think this, even in its unfinished form, is one of the most fitting for that theme, and I really, really enjoy Syn's characterization of Lynn and Valen as people, and how the Reader-insert is most definitely their own person even while being, well, Reader-insert.
The Importance Of An "O" (General)
He got a letter from a faraway village.
This one isn't as immediately present in my mind as some other fics, but every time I see Galanoth (and tbh the word "dragoon") I do think of it, so it's definitely left an impression!
Words Spoken In Wormwood (Mature)
Among the bars in Swordhaven, there was an unspoken rule: if you serve Rose members, you don't let anything they say leave the building. So when one night at the bar, a few Rose members were discussing some secrets regarding one of their own— Well. Go ahead and ask anyone who was there that night. That conversation never happened.
This inspired several headcanons about Valen/Amadeus himself of the "they'll never believe you" sort so this is as good as canon in my heart.
Fine (General)
He was never good with people, and never made many friends, so whenever he lost one, it always hit hard. Tomix finds himself missing the hero.
This one gets a special mention even though I only read it today because I WILL be thinking about this for a long time.
~!~
By myself
Sutures (Explicit)
So You Found Out You're A Masochist: A Beginner's Guide or Tomix gets injured and learns he has a kink.
It's got some gore, fair warning for that. But I keep thinking about it because of the uh, applications of intangible spirit hands, and also the nature of Tomix's unraveling.
In Vain (General)
A child's first brush with death.
This and the ask where I mention Ogenos Dessert Sausage are constantly on my mind because I'm stuck on thinking about lost cultural treasures and how they affect those who knew them and then lost them as time went by. I should post that ask on Ao3 maybe.
The Masochism Tango (Explicit)
"They feel like normal lungs. Spongy, surprisingly resilient, but so fragile at the same time..." She said, in a whispered, reverent tone he almost missed. She'd never sounded like that before, not that he knew. The silence stretched on a little longer than could really be accounted for, without the sound of her tools as she vivisected him. Notha's eyes went dilated and faintly mischievous above her mask. What did you find? ~!~ There isn't a lot of existing documentation on abyssal elf biology, so if Notha's going to make clones for herself and Remthalas, she needs to take some notes.
I would be lying if I said this one didn't live rent free in my head. Notha kissing his heart, especially.
~!~
Feel free to reblog with your own fics or other fics from this fandom that you enjoy!

i decoded the journal from /fortressdelve Dage took since i needed it for another thing, so enjoy
The shadows are too arrogant to spend their time on the scritch-scratches of a broken vessel.
I write to you as a fellow mortal. Expose the Shadows and the Doom that infests our gentle Darkness.
They wish to make slaves of us all.
---
The Mysterious Strangers of the Shadowscythe.
Of all of the Strangers, their power and memory is the strongest.
They remember their Master, wish to emulate this Master, and have gone through great pains to trap Valen Pulchure in their grasp.
Brick by brick, they built the Shadowscythe Empire.
It ordered the other active Strangers to serve it, for only they can see the Master’s plan vividly.
This is their fifth attempt.
One last chance.
It has no face. No identity. It is the Master’s will and only the Master’s will.
---
Daji, in flames.
The antithesis to the Shadowscythe’s Mysterious Stranger.
Brings civilizations to ruin and prevents the mortals from evolving too fast.
Countless lives, the promise of a better future, the ingenuity and inventions of humankind, all lost to its Shadows.
It enjoys our torment, our torture, forcing us to be pieces in its political games, watching in delight from the Shadows.
But, in return, it was set aflame and still remains aflame, tormented and tortured like its victims.
It traveled to the Fortress to seal away the deceased Champion of Light’s weapons in exchange for a favor.
“Leave me be. Let me return across the sea.”
---
The Worm that Walks.
Weakest of the active Strangers, yet able to bore into a mortal’s body and mind with ease.
It infests Lore just as the Shadows infest the Darkness.
Your neighbor could be infested and you would never know.
The Worm’s pride drives it to be doubtful of the Shadowscythe’s Stranger.
“We will not be your marionettes. Not when your favorite puppet has been ripping off its strings.”
“Lies. You are envious of my influence.” So said the Stranger of the Shadowscythe.
“No. I am envious of the scion of Light’s influence.” So said the Worm. “Already, it steals your control. Nothing you say to your puppet will stop the Light now.”
---
The Colossus.
A Stranger that is as vast as the night sky.
It engulfed entire continents in Shadow during the ancient Planar Conflicts. Millions of lives and untold amounts of history, sunk to the sea.
It was within this sea that ‘something’ tore the Colossus in half. This Stranger’s insides became its outsides and nothing can stop the bleeding.
“If the weak no longer have the will to serve the Master, then that leaves only you and I,” so said the Shadowscythe’s Stranger to The Colossus.
“Give up,” The Colossus responded. “I despise those who can not see that have already lost. Abandon your failing schemes, and turn your attention beyond the Light.”
The only way to regain its former glory was to take back the half that it lost to the abyss of the sea.
It had no interest in the coming downfall of its peers.
---
Enraged, the Stranger of the Shadowscythe attacked The Colossus.
The ensuing skirmish shook the foundation of the Flying Fortress. Fire spread from Daji, scorching the others with the flames the mortals used to execute it.
The fragments of The Worm were dug from my body, forcing it to flee.
Spited and without direction, the Shadows scattered, leaving the Shadowscythe’s Stranger burned and with tangled puppet strings.
Though weak, these Shadows will grow again. To whoever finds these words, do not allow the Shadows to escape.
Find them. Destroy every last one of them.
My name?… I no longer remember if I had one. The Shadows had me for too long.
But finally, I am free. The Darkness is quiet and gentle.
Finally, I can fall asleep.

Saga
read it on the AO3 at https://ift.tt/btwvLXq
by Anonymous
One cycle tells of a Dragon Rider, the last free dragon, and their struggle against an evil king.
Another fable tells a Hero chosen by Doom instead of Destiny.
This is not either of those tales.
Due to magical mishaps, Eragon is not chosen by a dragon fated to save the world, but one destined to destroy it. Two disparate realms must find common ground before both are swallowed by shadow.
Or: a crossover in which Saphira is born as a World Destroyer, but finds her way to Eragon anyway.

How my writing’s going
Me: Let’s write some more high school au before we get to the weird parts.
My brain: You know the A Darker World head canon you posted? The one about Serenity? Let’s write more of that. It sounds cool!
Me: But high school au!
Brain: NO.
Also very little changed overall in A Darker World, but here’s more headcanons! About other people even! Like Sepulchure and Jaania! Might even add up to 2K words! Did you know Drakath made many many assassination attempts on Sepulchure? SO MANY. Also Sepulchure used to be a ‘problem solver’ for the Shadowscythe.
Beneath hidetags.
Warning: discussion of assassination attempts, mention of bioweapons, mention of burn damage, and I forget what else. No cannibalism this time.
In a just world, Lysander would be tried for war crimes.
Or at least, his double dealing and experimenting weapons (probably incl. bioweapons) on his own people.
This is not a just world.
Did you know Lysander never was suspected in the (area) bombings? Or he experiments bioweapons on his own people but has such high PR that no one (very few people, actually, but there’s not enough PROOF) believes the whistleblowers?
People with sixth degree burns:
Lydia
Xan (A)
Sir Valen Pulchure vanished sometime after the woman he loved (1) died. She had cancer, and treatments were failing. He visited her and her husband often, only for her to die in a home invasion ( or something). She was survived by her (3? 4? ) children.
The guy got away. He wanted revenge. The Shadowscythe came to him in the night and offered him training and revenge in exchange for service. (Little did he know but the guy worked for them. He found out later and was v. Angry (2))
He became a problem solver for the Shadowscythe.
Years passed. During one of his …. Solutions, he found a child. He adopted her. She was two. Years passed. Shadowscythe never found out about her. He adopted her under a pseudonym. They sought to replace him, with the new kid (Some kid named Drakath?)
His test? Kill the old ‘problem solver’.
Drakath tried: an ‘accident’ with an axe, the occasional bullet and explosives.
Drakath didn’t check for a body, assuming that quite that many Explosives would kill anyone. (Explosives. Everywhere. Even the carpet was hiding explosives.) (He bought some firebombs from Lysander, too)
He survived and has scars.
His child, Gravelyn, was elsewhere for the day. (Daddy’s gotta go to work, I’ll be back!) (maybe dropped off at the local inn, run by some lady named Serenity? She was willing to watch a child.) (3) After that, he adopted the name Amadeus when dealing with people who are not his daughter. (4)
Jaania has Seen Some Shit. She worked for the equivalent of Doctors Without Borders. She has PTSD. She was put in prison (probably for ‘rabble rousing’. At least twice.
This Jaania was betrayed by a few people, it’s some of the reasons she was in prison.
She was visiting a nearby town and … ran into Amadeus. (5)
(A): Warlic had money, he paid for hospital for Alexander. It was Warlic’s fault making flamethrowers, Alexander startled him while he was in the middle of testing, and he turned to face Alexander… while holding the flamethrower ‘on’.  Is bad. Very bad. It still hurts, and they’re not friends. Not really.  Was art project, the flamethrowers.
(1): He isn’t bi. Nor is Alteon. So they didn’t threesome.
(2) That wasn’t the betrayal, though. That was a minor one. They tried to kill him later because he ‘was no longer useful’
(3) I think he’s pretty great at disguises. They never tracked him well enough, it’s why he was so great at ‘problem solving’… he could evade tracking, capture, and so many problems.)
(4) And that couldn’t recognize him as Sepulchure
(5)  (Gravelynn is six during this) (and not around when he ran into Jaania)
