This weekend I got to go on a road trip down the coast and I took the opportunity to experiment in my sketchbook. We met an elephant seal in a place called smugglers' cove, saw a lot of beaches and a few lighthouses, I sketched the Santa Cruz boardwalk at night, and we hiked over a hill to see this waterfall. I prepped some pages in my sketchbook ahead of time by coloring them with acrilic gouache for a matte but unchangeable background.

On 1 August 2021, from my hotel room, I spent the whole morning looking at the spectacular cityscape of Yau Ma Tei and Mong Kok and sketching it! This is truly a very iconic Hong Kong vertical cityscape. I decided not to apply any watercolour but only used drawing pens and to draw lines which I think the medium suits the subject matter best!

Urban sketches

My original objective was to record my latest urban sketch but I under estimated how cold that day was. My drawing hand was constantly shivering, unable to draw a straight line. Not a complete failure since I was able to created something creatively fun and quick. 

I finished the sketch despite the copious amount of initial mistakes as you can see on the thumbnail.

Here's some art studies and notes I did on urban sketching! I've decided to tackle my weakness with backgrounds and hope to understand them better so I can implement them into my works.

Surprisingly had fun with these and hope to learn more! (That's right, I'm going through some character development. Me and backgrounds need to go from enemies to lovers lmfaooo)
