^^^ A homophobe at the University of New South Wales who refused to use a stairway painted in Pride colors probably didn't do his gonads any good by trying to slither up the railing.
h/t: Comic Sands.
Perhaps the Capitol steps in Washington should be painted this way to deter a repeat of January 6th by pro-Trump terrorists. 🤔

Global database of spider silk to aid development of biomaterials
What's stronger and tougher than steel, and more elastic than rubber, weight for weight? Spider silk is, and this incredibly versatile material could transform engineering, materials science and even medicine—if we could just work out how to produce it.
Now a new global study that has cataloged web silk properties of almost 1100 spiders hopes to provide a launchpad for the design of future biomaterials that emulate this wonder of nature.
Dr. Sean Blamires, an evolutionary ecological biologist from UNSW Sydney's School of Biological, Environmental and Earth Sciences, says the new research, which was published recently in the journal Science Advances, examined the chemical structure, the genetics and the particular way that each spider spins their webs and marked these against the physical properties of the silk.
The team of researchers that spanned Asia, Oceania, Europe and the US spent five years collecting spiders from around the world, observing them, extracting silk and sequencing their transcriptomes—the RNA molecules that are coded to make silk. They added a massive dataset to the existing knowledge base which was previously limited to 52 species of spiders in 18 families, with 1,098 new species from 76 families.

The Popcorn Club
Tumblr media
Event planning can be a daunting task, but it's a critical component of any successful organisation. From small community events to large-scale conferences, effective event planning can be the difference between a memorable experience and a forgettable one. Recently, I had the opportunity to take part in the planning and promotion of an event called "The Popcorn Club." As I navigated through the process, I gained valuable insights into the world of event planning, including the importance of social media and the significance of collaboration and communication. In this blog post, I'll share my experience and some of the most crucial things I learned about event planning and promotion.
For an independent Uni event The Popcorn Club, in my mind anyways, was a success although there were only 50 seats and not all of them were filled. Those who came really enjoyed themselves and that's what really mattered. The atmosphere was electric, with people laughing and chatting as we watched our work displayed and when we had the social after.
From a planning perspective, the event went smoothly. As a group, although we had our own jobs we all were happy to help out with everything from designing posters, editing videos and brainstorming ideas for social media.
In terms of the work shown, we had carefully grouped certain ones together so we could create panels for Q&As and give the audience time to take in everything they've seen and so they don't become too overwhelmed. Our choices were validated by the reaction of the attendees, who enjoyed the variety and mix of works.
Overall, The Popcorn Club event was a fantastic night that exceeded my expectations. We had a great turnout, and everyone seemed to have a great time.
The success of the event was not just down to luck. It took months of planning and preparation to bring it all together, and this blog post will dive deeper into the thought process and decisions that went into making it a success.
Planning an event is a daunting task, but the experience of organising The Popcorn Club has taught me the art of event planning. Various things went into planning this event, from deciding on the theme and creating promotional content. In this blog post, I'll share the valuable insights I gained from it.
We had to decide on the theme of the event. It was a lot simpler than we thought it would be because in all honesty we already had the idea at the start, but that doesn't mean it hasn't changed and evolved. The theme of The Popcorn Club was centred around high school and how each member of the group has changed and evolved. We wanted to create an atmosphere of fun and relaxation where people could unwind and have a good time.
Once we finalised the theme, the next step was to create a promotion plan to ensure that the event reached as many people as possible. As a social media manager, my role was to create engaging and visually appealing content for the event's promotion. We utilised various social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter to promote the event and used the website other members of the group created to reach out to potential attendees. Although Social Media definitely isn't my strong suit I was so happy that I got to do it as it did give me a chance to better my abilities. It was so daunting to begin with but with the help of Blake (a member of the Popcorn Club), it got a lot easier. Social media became a voice for us to express ourselves and what we were creating.
During the planning process, we faced some challenges and had to make some changes. For instance what we were even going to be changing. Trying to decide how to show a dissertation and scripts is not an easy task but it worked out well and everyone loved it.
As someone who was in charge of the social media and promotions for The Popcorn Club, I learned quite a few things about event planning. Here are some of the key takeaways:
1. Communication is key
One of the biggest lessons I learned from planning The Popcorn Club is that communication is absolutely essential when it comes to organising an event. It is especially important when working with a group because people are always going to have different ideas or what to do.
2. Flexibility is important
While it's important to have a plan in place, it's also important to be flexible and adaptable when things don't go as planned. For example, at The Popcorn Club, we had to make some important and somewhat stressful decisions when it came to the interviews, photography and table reads. We all had to be flexible with our time so we could get it all done. It took some work.
Overall, planning The Popcorn Club was a challenging and rewarding experience that taught me a lot about event planning. By applying the lessons I learned to future projects, I'm confident that I'll be able to plan even more successful events in the future. It has also given me a major insight into what I want to do in the future. As a career, I now realise I want to go into Curation and Programming meaning planning events and putting works together. I got more from this project than I would've ever known.

The Best News of Last Week - May 15, 2023
🧲 - Magnetic Marvels: Researchers Flip the Switch on Depression
1. New Zealand Government announces prescriptions charges will be free.
Tumblr media
The $5 prescription fee at pharmacies will be scrapped in July. This is set to save about 3 million people a year money, and in particular 770,000 people aged over 65. It will make most prescriptions in New Zealand free.
Free access to medicines is also hoped to ease pressure on the over-burdened health system by helping people get medicines sooner.
2. Platypuses return to Sydney's Royal National Park after disappearing for decades
Tumblr media
Platypuses have been relocated to the Royal National Park in Sydney, after they disappeared from the park's waterways about 50 years ago. A joint project by the University of New South Wales, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the World Wildlife Fund has reintroduced five females to the Hacking River, with a group of males to follow next week.
3. 74-year-old musician Otis Taylor gets Denver high school diploma decades after being expelled for hair
Tumblr media
A musician who was expelled from a Denver high school over 50 years ago received his diploma. Otis Taylor was kicked out of Manual High School in 1966 because of his hair. This was decades before laws ending racial hair discrimination. Denver Public Schools wanted to right a wrong.
4. Researchers treat depression by reversing brain signals traveling the wrong way (with magnets)
Tumblr media
A new study led by Stanford Medicine researchers is the first to reveal how magnetic stimulation treats severe depression: by correcting the abnormal flow of brain signals. Powerful magnetic pulses applied to the scalp to stimulate the brain can bring fast relief to many severely depressed patients for whom standard treatments have failed.
The FDA-cleared treatment, known as Stanford neuromodulation therapy, incorporates advanced imaging technologies to guide stimulation with high-dose patterns of magnetic pulses that can modify brain activity related to major depression. Compared with traditional TMS, which requires daily sessions over several weeks or months, SNT works on an accelerated timeline of 10 sessions each day for just five days.
5. Electricity generation through solar, wind and water exceeded total demand in mainland Spain on Tuesday, a pattern that will be repeated more and more in the future
Tumblr media
The Spanish power grid on Tuesday tasted an appetizer of the renewable energy banquet that is expected to flourish in the coming years. For nine hours, between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., the generation of green electricity was more than enough to cover 100% of Spanish peninsular demand, a milestone that had already been reached on previous occasions, but not for such a prolonged period.
6. RI Senate passes bill making lunch free at all public schools
Tumblr media
Free lunch for all public school students in Rhode Island is one step closer to becoming a reality.
Tuesday night the Rhode Island Senate overwhelmingly passed a bill by a vote of 31-4 that would do just that. If the companion bill in the House were to pass, that takes effect July 1. The bill would make breakfast and lunch free for all public school students in the state, regardless of their household income.
7. Critically endangered red wolf pups born at North Carolina Zoo
The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro celebrated the arrival of “not one but TWO litters” of the world’s most endangered wolf – the red wolf – in late April and early May.
A total of nine pups were born – three to parents Marsh and Roan, and six to Denali and May – the zoo announced on May 9.
