While many of us are treading carefully to avoid a slip in the frosty weather, scientists led by the University of Leicester have been investigating how to make surfaces even slippier! They have solved a conundrum in the principles of superlubricity -- a state in which two surfaces experience little to almost vanishing friction when sliding across one another. They have published their conclusions in a paper for the journal Physical Review Letters. Superlubricity is associated with molecular smooth surfaces such as graphene and has only been observed in the laboratory environment where these surfaces are synthesized at nano and micron scales. It looks very promising for technological applications where it could potentially reduce friction up to 1000 -- 10000 times, as compared to conventional friction in machines and mechanisms.

Say what you will about Barbie I do like that they are honoring women in science.
A space scientist, best known for presenting BBC One's The Sky at Night and CBeebies Stargazing, is to be honoured with a Barbie doll.
Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock has been named as a Barbie Role Model for her work promoting science careers to girls.
It comes ahead of International Women's Day on Wednesday and British Science Week from 10-19 March.
"I hope my doll will remind girls that when you reach for the stars, anything is possible," she said.
Earlier this month, the astronomer became the new chancellor at the University of Leicester, which is known for space research.
Dr Aderin-Pocock said she fell "in love with the idea of space travel" as a young girl and had since spent her career "trying to show girls how fascinating space science can be".
"I want to inspire the next generation of scientists, and especially girls, and let them know that STEM [science, technology, engineering and maths] is for them," she said.
"These subjects are just too important to be left to the guys because through science, you can literally change the world."
Her doll has a starry dress reminiscent of the night sky and comes with a telescope accessory for stargazing, in relation to her work looking deep into space with the James Webb telescope.
Dr Aderin-Pocock said: "When I was little, Barbie didn't look like me, so to have one created in my likeness is mind-boggling.
"It's such an honour to receive this doll that is celebrating my achievements."
Toy creator Mattel, known for releasing dolls in honour of celebrities, is also recognising six other STEM professionals globally.
Kelly Philp, marketing director at Mattel UK, said: "We know that globally STEM is a field widely recognised as under-representing women, so as a brand, Barbie is committed to showing girls more STEM careers.
"In the UK, research tells us women make up only 26% of the STEM workforce, so showcasing an exciting career in space science like Dr Maggie's is just one way we are inspiring girls to think differently about their career opportunities."
Other Barbie Role Models include Covid-19 vaccine creator Prof Sarah Gilbert, broadcaster Clara Amfo, sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, teen skateboarder Sky Brown and boxer Nicola Adams.

The piece is a homage to the east Midlands city. It features a fox, in reference to the city’s football club, a tiger for the local rugby team, an astronaut to represent the National Space Centre, and a double helix as the University of Leicester pioneered DNA fingerprinting.
“It’s such a statement for Leicester and it’s such a statement for the UK as well,” said Hoskins, after the finishing touches were made on Saturday. “You can see it from so many miles away; in one part of the city you can see it four miles away.”
Lo worked alongside the local artists Richard Peacock and Leigh Drummond, with assistance from Ben Edwards and Kiene Tuckley, to bring the vision to life over five weeks. They took it in turns to paint from a cradle roughly the size of a bench hanging down the side of the block.
“You can’t stand back and look because you’d have to come all the way down and you would just lose so much time,” he said. “So sometimes you’re just painting not knowing whether it’s going to work or not. Some things we nailed first try, other things we had to go back and alter, there was a bit of back and forth.”

some other adam norris discoveries from money marketing:
He left Hargreaves Lansdown in 2008 after being brought in almost 10 years prior to set up their pension arm before shifting to heading the firm's advisory service. When he quit he was one of the youngest managing directors in the industry. Quote: "He is leaving to spend more time with his family and to pursue other interests. He is not expected to return to financial services." Interestingly, 2008 was Lando's first karting race (he got 35th).
Then, in 2013, he returned to financial services. It was quite dramatic; MoneyMarketing had multiple pages of their September 2013 magazine dedicated to his return. Quote: "One of Hargreaves Lansdown’s biggest shareholders has amassed a £100m war chest to invest in retail financial services firms across the protection, at-retirement and alternative investment markets." Investments would be made via his venture capital firm, Horatio Investments, and he expected to invest up to £20m by the end of the year. He clarified that he wasn't looking to compete with Hargreaves Lansdown. His return to investing in financial services came after investing "in a juice company and a software firm which now works with Virgin," about which he said: "The thing I have realised with all those businesses is I do not know any of them as well as I know this sector. I will be calling up friends and contacts to see who they would be investing in."
