3. What is your idea of a perfect date?
Emmett Becker: Well, you can't tell Murdoc what I'm about to say because it'll hurt his feelings- what? no, I'm serious! [they laugh, despite meaning it sincerely] Truthfully? My idea of a perfect date is something quiet where we can put most of the focus on something else, while still being together. Think parallel play but for adults! Staying at home and doing stuff separately, but next to each other. We usually draw when we do this. But, Murdoc likes being able to talk to me while we're on dates, which is understandable, I just don't wanna talk the wholeee time. You understand. So we usually end up on fancy, expensive dinner dates. Don't get me wrong, I am NOT complaining, I love these, but sometimes, it is nice just to exist next to each other, no talking required. But again, do NOT tell him I said this, he'll be sad! I'll tell him when the time's right, don't worry.
Murdoc: Personally, I like the dates where we get to talk to each other about stuff. Obviously, a number of types of outings fit this bill, but my personal favorite is going to a museum. Its super fun because depending on which one we go to, one of us tends to know more about the stuff there and can give the other a little guided tour, of sorts! And while I love talking, I love listening to Emmett even more and they just get so excited when they get to talk about stuff they know about. So I guess what I'm getting at is, my favorite dates are at the Air and Space museum and the Natural History museum. You wouldn't believe how much Emmett knows about physics and animals and rocks and stuff... they have a degree in psychology. None of this stuff is stuff they're formally educated in and yet... the sheer amount of knowledge they retain is kind of incredible. One of the many things I love about them. [he smiles in a manner resembling that of a schoolgirl with a crush]
9. What was your first impressions of each other?
Emmett Becker: I'll be honest with you, the first time I met Murdoc, it was in a supermax prison cell where he was kept in isolation because he was so dangerous. So, with that information in my mind, meeting him in the interrogation room which was now doubling as my session meeting place, was... nerve wracking to say the least.
I mean, this is the guy that I know only as someone who just days ago tried to kill my closest friends and colleagues. Suffice it to say, the circumstances weren't ideal for cultivating romance, not that that's what either of us had in mind at the time.
I was there in the capacity of being a representative of the Phoenix Foundation, someone with an academic and prestigious background in abnormal psychology and someone who hadn't been one of the original targets, an outsider's perspective. And I'll admit, stepping into that room, it did feel colder, and it was unnerving and he was terrifying, in that moment.
He had this deeply, deeply unsettling expression, subtle and yet it screamed, 'I'm gonna eat you alive, little lamb', loud and clear. I was pretty sure I could see the gears turning behind his eyes, conjuring up unthinkable ways of killing me. He wanted to hurt me. He was a caged animal, not frightened but certainly agitated- not a convenient starting state of mind for me to work with.
Nonetheless, I did my best to keep a veneer of calm and relative stability so as to do my job effectively: glean as much information as I could about who wanted the flagship team dead so badly that they would send Murdoc on their tails. This was a bigger problem than Murdoc. Where there's a hitman, there's usually someone paying them to do it.
I introduced myself and asked a few standard starting questions but he quickly steered the conversation in his favor and started asking questions too, mostly about me. It was really unnerving, to be honest. I've spent a lifetime getting good at reading people and figuring out how to interact with them- and not just for the fact that I'm in psychology. It started as a survival mechanism. When you're autistic, you learn ways of making yourself appear more 'normal'.
Eventually, satisfied that I'd established a decent repertoire with Murdoc, I left.
I didn't really sleep that night though. I could never have imagined how our relationship would evolve from that first meeting alone.

Murdoc: Oh, oh yes, this is an interesting one! Well, the first time I met Emmett was not actually a great time for me; I was in prison. Why? Oh you know, this and that.. and the fact that I tried to kill four members of an covert government espionage agency. Well, that's not all, but that's the incident that got me caught. Anyways, I digress.
Meeting Emmett was definitely the highlight of my so far as of yet, brief, stay in prison. Ah- not for the reasons you're probably thinking. We were certainly not the happy lovebirds we are now, back then. No, at the time, I was entertaining myself by envisioning the most creative ways of killing my new psychologist that I could.
The first meeting didn't go badly, per say, but I hadn't warmed up, nearly enough, yet to call them a friend. As such, I settled to imagine various methods of murdering them, along with finishing the job I had been sent to do to begin with.
It is certainly a far cry from the deep affection we hold for each other now... oh well, sometimes love starts off messily. At least, it wasn't me making it messy this time, if you catch my meaning. [he puts his hand to the side of his mouth and whispers loudly] Murder. I'm talking about murder. [he smiles darkly before his expression turns back to one of relative ambivalence] you know, because then they wouldn't be alive and I wouldn't have fallen in love with them!
