Thrawnius accents…

…I’m definitely a minority in not being too keen on LarsMikkelson as Thrawn—whether live action or even as voice-over animation. Not withstanding my issues with the physical appearance, the voice is too ‘slimy-creepster-hey-little kid-want some *candy*’-intonation for how I envision someone who ought to have been embodying the screen presence of TywinLannister, and that cold/ruthless/savage intensity of Aemond Targaryen (that quote from Season1–about being the Targaryen ‘who studies history-philosophy-swordcraft-etc-‘-stopping short of declaring himself heir over his bro, Aegon…yum, pure Thrawn—Legends Thrawn…)—

Anyway, I’ve always envisioned Thrawn’s appearance as a combo of Henry Cavil-Benedict Cumberbatch-and Jason Isaacs…and the voice—*meow*—ever since watching Season1 of ‘AlteredCarbon’, I can’t stop weaving the accent of Joel Kinnaman into my head-canon of Thrawn. Hell-Joel Kinnamen could even be added to the synergized actor combo of how I envision Thrawn…but that voice and accent—cultured, elegant, with an accented articulation—silk and steel depending on which side one falls…

Evil People Are Not Born, They Are Made

A note on the text: I used George RR Martin’s A Storm of Swords as published in 2011 by Bantam Books

Evil people are not born, they are made. No one comes into the world as an evil man, it is the world (and their response to it) that make them evil. No where in this book is it more obvious than in the characters of Tywin and Tyrion.

As Westley once said in The Princess Bride “life is pain”, and everyone has to find a way to cope with that pain. Reality has a way of toughening people up and forcing us to become people that we might not have particularly wanted to become, and might even spend the rest of our lives regretting that we never had to become. When we meet Tywin Lannister at the beginning of the series he just a ruthless person who appears to hate everyone, including his son Tyrion. The beautiful thing about this series is that in lesser hands, Tywin would have remained just a one dimensional villain. But in the hands of a master life Martin, we are allowed to look behind the curtain and see what it is that made Tywin into the bitter, ruthless, villain that he is. When Tyrion asks his father why he has always hated him, Tywin says it’s because his wife died while giving birth to Tyrion. Later when Tyrion asks his aunt about his father, she tells Tyrion to not judge him too harshly because Tywin is “no harder than he has to be” (906). Tywin’s father had run the Lannister estate into the ground because he let people take advantage of him. So when he inherited everything after his father’s death, it feel to Tywin to put everything back together again. Then when he had to, as a 20 year old, help rule the unruly world of Westeros as the Hand of Mad King Aerys “and he bore that burden for twenty years [even though] all it earned was a mad king’s envy. Instead of the honor he deserved, he was made to suffer slights beyond count, yet he gave the Seven Kingdoms peace, plenty, and justice” (906). 

Trauma is what sculpted Tywin into the man he was. The trauma of having a spendthrift father, a world at war, and losing the love of his life. It wasn’t that he was simply born a hard hearted villain, but that the world around him conspired to make him into one.

Just like his father, Tyrion had to endure a lot of trauma in his life. He actually does have a much softer side that we see in many places throughout the book, specifically in his relationship with Shae. His relationship with her is especially touching when we learn that he was betrayed by his first wife whom he is led to believe never really loved him. It’s not until later in the book when he is on trial for the murder of King Joffrey and Shae is forced to testify against him, even though she knew he was innocent, that we really start to see him become the more hardened character that he becomes. Then once Jaime tells him the truth about his ex wife and that she did not betray him as everyone told him she did, Tyrion is really pushed over the edge and responds by killing both Shae and his father. But even that only happened after he had been forced to endure one torment after another until he finally broke. 

No one is ever born a villain. No matter what we think of a person, something terrible must have happened to them at some point which made them the monsters that they are. Tywin and Tyrion are good examples of that and I think it would be good for all of us to take them as examples before jumping to conclusions about anyone in our life.

okay so I do love Cersei Lannister as a character because she’s super smart and cunning and while she may be a total bitch and has done a lot of bad things NOBODY deserves to go through what she went through when she did her walk of atonement. That shit was brutal to watch both the first and second time and I literally teared up it made me so sad
