THREAT LEVEL: ★★★☆☆ | With differing motivations, some tyrfing have no interest in combat with civilians, the innocent, or the weak. Others aren’t discerning. They can take over someone’s lifelong aspirations and are only known about by those who work heavily with older weapons.

HABITAT: Often found in populated areas, either being kept by their thralls or in antique shops, secondhand shops, hunter resources, etc. They usually originate in isolated, serene locations such as on mountain peaks or on small islands in the middle of lakes.

DESCRIPTION: The idea of a special weapon, one that chooses its wielder, is almost as old as written language. Most people know about “the sword in the stone” and similar stories. These weapons were likely tyrfing – sentient swords or other weapons that form a magical bond with the person who wields them, allowing them and only them to do so. No one knows how they originated. Oozing strange magic that’s detectible to anyone who can sense it, tyrfing are not strictly considered “good” despite their presence in legendary tales. Each has its own goal in mind, which isn't always in the best interest of anyone else – often, they want to make a name for themselves and become a legend around the world. This may be through chivalrous duels in the best of cases, but it can also be through murderous rampage.

Tyrfing draw their chosen individual toward them by emitting a strange aura calling for awe and admiration. Once the tyrfing has a thrall, they form magic tethers between themself and their chosen wielder, cementing the weapon’s status as one of the wielder’s most cherished positions, and ensuring it’s at the forefront of the person’s thoughts at all times, entwining its goals with the wielder’s desires. This can lead down to a path of obsession, and the magical bond between the tyrfing and wielder can cause someone to throw themselves into deadly situations all in the name of fame or infamy.

ABILITIES: Tyrfing are often incredibly beautiful, formidable weapons, even when they have the appearance of being well-worn. They seem to sense potential as well as malleability within people, and use those criteria to make their choice. Their corrupting influence will eventually align the wielder to their goals. Most tyrfing can only form one magical bond every century or so, which makes some choosy (while others, less likely to achieve their aspirations of fame, are less choosy). Sometimes these weapons will be too heavy for anyone else to hold, other times the tyrfing seals itself in a rock and chooses who can pull it out, or they simply lie in wait somewhere hard to access waiting for the first person to come along.

Their intelligence can turn their wielder into a legendary combatant – at least in appearance; the tyrfing often does most of the work, using their wielder as nothing more than a hand to hold them. The combat acumen of tyrfing is almost unrivaled and they will fight with all they have to protect and achieve glory for the one who wields them. While tyrfing aren’t unbreakable weapons and they should be cared for, they do have some supernatural durability.

WEAKNESS: Spellcasters are immune to the beckoning and bonds of tyrfing, and can sense the strange magic coming off these weapons, which often feels uneasy. Tyrfing seem to have a very old, raw form of magic within them, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to remove the magic and sentience from the tyrfing while preserving the actual weapon. However, it is possible to break the bond between the tyrfing and its thrall by destroying the weapon or causing the tyrfing to reject its thrall out of embarrassment, if there is a complete and utter failure in a combat situation. The tyrfing will cut its losses. Tyrfing can’t really move on their own other than a little wiggle to highlight their shine, but once they’re in someone’s hand, they can exert control over their own movement. No one knows how they end up in such strange locations to begin with, but surely magic is involved.

Never posted this incredibly silly procedural drama TV poster pastiche I did for my D&D game! For some reason the city guard have decided to take these chucklefucks on as consultants, and they have already caused multiple Yackety Sax Occurrences.

From left to right: Gummi (cleric, does not know what bones are and is too afraid to ask), Thrumm Deepglow (circle of spores druid, solves most problems with wolves), Conch (fighter, just broke up with his long-distance bird boyfriend), Dorothée (eldritch knight fighter/sorcerer, no one knows she's an exiled princess), Shenzi (baby rogue, possessed by the spirit of a dragon and on the run from a chaos god about it), Ash (monk, big shounen protagonist energy), Scam (rogue, together with Ash just ran an absolutely ludicrous con on Fantasy Joe Exotic), Eris (college of spirits bard, tracked the rest of us down to help her solve a mystery and got Involved in our Shit)

other favorite art subjects since i last posted on tumblr: my d&d group! we started playing over discord in june of 2020 and are still going strong. i play THRUMM DEEPGLOW, a dwarven funerary priest and druid of the circle of spores. elaboration of the above images follows:

my first little sketch of our characters, from august 2020

a poster for our first big arc, which started as an offhand joke during our first session. we got souvenir belt buckles shaped like wizard hats. the lad riding on Gruthem's back is Reginald, a wizard's apprentice and farmboy who we basically adopted for the duration.

our gruff fighter Conch finally acting on his affection for Kato, a member of the Sky Guard in the city of Havenloft (where we ended up getting embroiled in an incredibly elaborate corruption scandal involving crime, vengeance, and forgotten gods for 25 entire sessions)

updated lineup as of april 2021. out of date now by like three whole characters, but i've yet to draw an updated one.

i'm the group's semi-official scribe, and keep an archive of my commentary if y'all want to see what we've been up to.

Happy Easter everybody, meet the BilRose and Broppy fankids (the eggs from the last post). My Trollsona, Queen Rose and Billy Reverb have eighteen babies while Branch and Queen Poppy have 1267 but these seven babies are the ones I made since there are lots of Broppy fankids.

Queen Rose’s son, Prince Sterling is the eldest child and the future king while the second child is Princess Eve. Then, there’s Prince Marble, the twins Prince Tyrfing and Princess Tizona (they’re named after legendary swords), Princess Peach, the septuplets, Prince Riven, Prince Reagan, Princess Rue, Prince Rowan, Prince River, Princess Rachel and Princess Regina, Prince Argent, Princess Clover, Prince Flamelet, Princess Syndra, and Princess Dulce.

Here’s the names I thought of for these Broppy babies, the first is Prince Poplar, then came Prince Layke, Princess Azalea, Prince Sprout, Princess Grape, Princess Bloom, and Prince Wave.

Played D&D with my pals for the first time in like three months and the hot moody fishman who's been tagging along with us got fatally bitten in half by a dracolich, but fortunately for everyone

our cleric knows revivify. we didn't have a diamond handy but

my character is a funerary priest and he knows body preservation spells, giving us longer than a minute to figure out what we're doing, and as luck would have it

we're literally in a dragon's lair so there's gems and shit all everywhere.

We did have to put him back together, which was a bit of a struggle in part because the cleric also is a flumph and does not know how vertebrates go. But we managed!! Our cleric jammed the diamond into his mouth "like an N64 cartridge" but the spell worked!!

further drawings of my d&d character THRUMM DEEPGLOW, dwarven funerary priest and circle of spores druid. he is religiously obsessed with the role mushrooms and other decomposers play in the cycle of life, and he talks in a deep, slow monotone. his primary settings are Congenial and Completely Feral. i enjoy playing him a lot.

the last image depicts the part of our campaign where Thrumm conjured eight wolves to fight a wraith. it's arguably his best moment since the part in our first game where he killed a man by superheating his ostentatious belt buckle until he caught fire.
