List of interesting ressources pertaining to norse paganism, scandinavian folklore and history, and nordic religions in general
These are sources I have personally used in the context of my research, and which I've enjoyed and found useful. Please don’t mind if I missed this or that ressource, as for this post, I focused solely on my own preferences when it comes to research. I may add on to this list via reblog if other interesting sources come to my mind after this has been posted. Good luck on your research! And as always, my question box is open if you have any questions pertaining to my experiences and thoughts on paganism.

(Reminder! The channel "The Wisdom of Odin", aka Jacob Toddson, is a known supporter of pseudo scientific theories and of the AFA, a folkist and white-supremacist organization, and he's been known to hold cult-like, dangerous rituals, as well as to use his UPG as truth and to ask for his followers to provide money for his building some kind of "real life viking hall", as supposedly asked to him by Óðinn himself. A source to avoid. But more on that here.)

The shield-maiden stands alone facing a terrible beast.
This painting is a remake of an older painting I did back in 2015 even if little remains but the core concept. Inspired by the norse sagas and the beautiful Norwegian mountains and fjords. Listened to a lot of Heilung and Wardruna while painting this one!

found this interesting! although i will say that personally my default way to read any medieval text for the first time is purely vibes-based. i have no idea who anyone is or where they live and i'm probably quite confused, but that's just how it goes. if however you prefer to know what's going on, some of the resources linked here for dealing with maps and names and things might be handy, and i definitely plan to check out some of the books and articles rec'd here re: monsters, gender, and disability...

The Ramsund carving, believed to have been carved around 1030, was found close to Ramsund, Sweden. It is considered part of the “Sigurd stones”, a group of eight or nine runic inscriptions which can be found in Sweden, with all pertaining to the myth of the hero Sigurðr. The Ramsund stone depicts scenes from the Völsunga Saga, which go as follows:
Sigurðr preparing a fire to roast the dragon Fáfnir’s heart, as instructed by his uncle Regin. Having burnt himself in the process, Sigurðr sticks his finger in his mouth. He is soon to discover that the dragon’s blood which stained his finger gave him the ability to understand the language of birds as they sang.
The birds warn Sigurðr that Regin intends to kill him and take the dragon Fáfnir’s treasure for himself.
This prompts Sigurðr to end the life of his treacherous uncle, whose body now lies next to his smithing tools.
Sigurðr’s horse Grani now carries the dragon’s treasure.
Depiction of Sigurðr killing Fáfnir: having concealed himself in a hole outside the dragon’s lair, he waited for it to crawl outside and towards the river to go and drink so he could stab upwards into the beast’s heart.
Depiction of the three brothers, Regin, Fáfnir (whose greed turned him into a dragon), and Ótr, who appears along with his brethren at the beginning of the saga.

A lot can be learned about the #Viking mindset by studying the Old #Norse sagas. A blend of vengeance, black humor and a belief in fate drove these fearsome warriors.

VALSHE 7th Mini Album: 「SAGAS」
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Release Date: March 1, 2023
*NOTE: More info will be added as it releases, this post will be updated accordingly. As the title of "SAGAS=Tales of Adventure" suggests, this is a concept album with an emphasis on a fantasy world. With visuals inspired by the Middle East and Arab, all 7 songs have a theme, and the songs are linked to create a single story. The album as a whole includes palindromic narrative tricks, and the story varies depending on the song you start listening to. While bringing out the Arabian atmosphere to the fullest, this song has both a danceable beat and a profound feeling that is worth listening to. Source: (x)
