Act 3, Scene 4 of Twisted Veronaville: An Omen Come True
THE LAST PAGE
Tumblr media
Pascal: (Finally, I get the chance to talk. I've been feeling much lighter since I buried the General alive...seems like they're occupied with something, though...)
Sita: Dude, it's okay! We'll get through this.
Aktu: I'm just...confused? How could this have happened? And why did it have to be twins?
Sita: Okay, I know you're distressed, but maybe we can go get boba as a little treat...
Aktu: I JUST SAID I WASN'T DISTRESSED! AND THERE'S NO BOBA SHOPS IN VERONAVILLE AT ALL! THE CLOSEST ONE IS SEVERAL TOWNS AWAY!
Pascal: (Now's probably a bad time...)
Sita: No, it's not, Pascal! Aktu, go trim the bushes. I'll take care of this.
Tumblr media
Pascal: You're making your pregnant brother trim the bushes?
Sita: Oh, it's fine! He likes trimming the bushes. Anyway, what was it that we were meeting for again? We've postponed this for so long that I just kind of forgot.
Pascal: Yeah, um...sorry. I don't fully remember either.
Sita: (Maybe I'll just peer into his mind and see if there's anything there...) Oh! You told Hamza that we were here, but then also told us that they were here too. You betrayed us both, eh?
Pascal: (Shit! I forgot about her powers!) Haha...um...yeah!
Sita: (I can't believe this! That traitor!) Oh, you! What a silly goose you are! Good on you for murdering the General, though!...now, whose side are you actually on?
Pascal: Neither! Both of you have very valid points, and I'm hoping we can all find a compromise.
Pascal: And the truth is, I only agreed to any of this so I would have an alibi for General Buzz's disappearance. Nobody would suspect the man who disappeared before him, you know...and I found out that my brother is apparently being held captive. I should check up on him and Lazlo before something bad happens to them. So...I'm not sure if I'll even stick around to see how this story ends.
Sita: (Coward.) Hm...well, best of luck to you.
Tumblr media
After Sita and Pascal had their conversation, Ripp had decided to pay the Capps a visit.
Juliette: Oh, hi! It's been a while since we've talked huh?...welcome back to our house! Let me know if you want anything!
Ripp: Thanks!
Juliette: So, what brings you here? Tybalt's outside with...ugh, Mercutio...and Hermia's at Puck's place.
Ripp: (It'll be easier to get to Consort through her.) I wanted to talk to you, actually. Wanted to see how you were doing and all that.
Juliette: Oh?...aw, thank you! I'm fine, though! Grandpa's decided to put me into an arranged marriage too even though I specifically said I wasn't interested in any Montys anymore...do you know Gavin Newson?
Ripp: No, sorry.
Juliette: Oh, well. On the bright side, he's postponed my arranged marriage until after college, so I still have some time to mess around before then. Nothing too serious, since it won't last anyway...
Ripp: (The relationship with Romeo must've really messed with her head.) That's understandable. I mean, there's people who go through their entire teen years without any relationship at all.
Juliette: You're not one of those people, are you?
Ripp: Believe it or not, I am. Never even had a first kiss.
Juliette: Wow. I kind of assumed there'd be a lot of people who'd be all over you...would you like one?
Ripp: (HOLY FUCK AM I ACTUALLY GETTING A KISS?) I could think of nobody better.
Juliette: (Holy cow, I actually did it! I offered him a kiss and he actually accepted it!...this must be a dream)
Ripp: (A FIRST KISS! LET'S FUCKING GO!)
Tumblr media
Ripp rode this high for the next couple of days, even as Tybalt came by for another visit...to tell him something very important.
Tybalt: ...And I'm going to execute the plan tomorrow. I haven't been able to talk to Mercutio yet, but I'm certain he got my letter.
Ripp: (I'm getting deja vu, for some reason.) The plan to fake your death, right?
Tybalt: Yep. My main concern is timing, since my family only keeps the bodies of our ancestors in the family crypt during funeral preparations, and if they take too long I might end up getting buried alive.
Ripp: That's a couple of days, right?
Tybalt: Yeah, but I think it should be enough time...and I wanted to thank you. Mercutio and I never would've gotten along if it weren't for you...and I appreciate you breaking up Juliette and that Romeo.
Ripp: (He says Romeo's name as if it were a slur.) No problem. Maybe we can see each other again if the plan goes successfully...like in college, or something.
Tybalt: Yep...I hope so too.
Tumblr media
And as Tybalt left, Ripp came to an immediately realization.
Ripp: I FORGOT TO TALK TO CONSORT!
Ripp: Fuck!...well, I can still call them...
Ripp: (Will any of the Capps even believe me? I don't know if there's time to stop them...but what if Tybalt does something worse? Might as well give it a-)
*BZZT*
Ripp: Huh...the power line isn't working for some reason...
???: Because I've cut it. We're ending this feud between us, Ripp, once and for all.
Ripp: (Ugh...not him again.)

Romeo and Juliet - Globe production 2009
So, as I think every Shakespeare person on this site, I've spent the past few days rewatching my favorite parts of this over and over again, but only now I've decided to talk about it a lot more in depth and watch all of it. So, did I like it? Yeah, I have to say I expected to like it more because the clips I had been able to watch a while ago were mostly featuring Ellie Kendrick's Juliet's solo scenes which are imho the highlight of the production.
The only comment on this I read from someone whose opinion I trust mentioned there is a lack of chemistry between the titular characters and thst the romance comes off as kind of too childish and silly. Now, it's probably because my opinion of the ideal chemistry is quite less sexually charged than most people, but I only partly agree with this. For example, the lark scene was definitely underwhelming (tho I liked the little preamble where Romeo stares, obviously scared, out of the window and Juliet reaches him as the chorus sings) and the courtship sonnet just average, but the balcony was exceptionally good, Zeffirelli levels even, a perfect balance of flirty humor, passion, tenderness and enthusiasm, also helped by the fact both actors decided this was the moment to be a bit more natural in their acting and drop the... Comedical conceit? I'm gonna elaborate a bit more on this later, but anyway it was very good. There is definitely some tonal issue with the romance, but imho it's more due to the overall inability of almost anyone in this cast to play in a tragedy than romantic chemistry: these kids would have played Beatrice and Benedick just fine.
It's very clear that the director's intent in this was to highlight this play's overlooked comedic influence and, while I appreciate it... Eh it's a bit of a mixed bag. I like highlighting the humor and snark that is already present, especially the two lovers', I kinda enjoy the comedic servant character, some scenes were done in a really nice and original way, but unfortunately it also means everything after the duel falls really emotionally flat. The deaths in particular were hard to watch. I also think Tybalt was underused in this sense and was way too serious (sooo sad because the actor is really pretty and seems good tho he was given fuck all to do) while Paris should have been less comedic, given that the fact this doesn't cut the sexual-harrassment-in-church-scene (THANK GOD) makes him REALLY sleazy and a legitimate threat for Juliet. Though I love the scene where the Capulet's have to basically passively aggressively kick him out of the house.
Another noteworthy point is that the script cuts almost nothing, a few scenes are shortened but all are present. Personally I find this great as I am a big fan of a lot of scenes that are often unappreciated and cut - the aforementioned conversation between Paris and Juliet, the scene were Juliet complains about the nurse being late, a few Bencutio-inclined scenes etc. However they really could have used to skip a few purely comedic scenes involving the servants, and the prologues, seriously? The prologues in the year of our lord 2009?
There's also a little added bickering between Lord and Lady C about whether to have the wedding on Thursday or Wednesday to make fun of Shakespeare fucking up the timeline, which is obviously awkward and unnecessarily but lord do I respect the principle.
The costumes are good, imho, a bit plain/stiff in some cases. In particular I'd like to know what possessed them to have gray as Juliet's main color. But for the rest they look nice, especially Lady C's, Nurse's and the young men. I also appreciate that Juliet wears blue and Romeo red for the wedding, it's really pretty and symbolic, and that there's a difference made clear between everyday clothes and the nice ones for the party or the wedding for Romeo too. I also love his ball headdress of twigs and feathers, very cute and fairylike.
Now - the characterization. As I mentioned I was extremely pleasantly surprised by Ellie Kendrick's Juliet. She's the first actress that I think captures Juliet's snark and feeling of like... Overwhelming urgency and intensity. When she says on the balcony that she's incapable of being as coy and poised and careful with her feelings as other girls, it's believable, when she complains about old people being slow and acting like they're already dead compared to her warm youthful blood and passion, it's... A bit mean as teenage girls will be, but believable. One thing I love about Juliet how Shakespeare wrote is that she has a lot of these little character touches that set her apart from a Stock Romantic Maiden and she really makes it shine more than any other actress. My issue is that her portrayal changes very little through the play: in some cases it works well even in heavier scenes (for example the conversation with Paris and then with Friar Lawrence has such fervor and bitterness to it, I love her little snarky huff when FL doubts she will have the courage to go through with her plans) in other it really doesn't. The poison speech is really, really jarring, I know her speeding up like crazy is meant to convey anxiety but she doesn't really make it come across imho, and she shows almost no emotion in her death. Points added for the Gallop apace fiery footed steeds speech tho, it's really charming and mischievous ad I loved it. She also does surprisingly well with the reaction to Romeo's banishment despite not being usually good with sad scenes
Now, Romeo... Romeo seemed really mediocre to me from the clips and then he grew on me, but he's quite strange. In most of his scenes he seems... Uhm, too dramatic? Too conscious of the fact he's acting? Which I don't know if it's meant to be reflective of Romeo's personality or simply the actor's style. I could appreciate it as a characterization choice if he started acting more naturally after meeting Juliet and dropping his Unrequited Love Angst (which he does for a while), but then for some reason he goes back to it, to the point where the duel with Paris and his death is the worst offender. So it's really unclear what he's doing. His best scenes are definitely the balcony, the conversation with Friar Lawrence (such genuine affection and complicity! This production does GREAT at establishing the kids' relationships with their surrogate parents, I wish it was more common) and his conversation with the nurse, which coincidentally are those where he acts more natural. In these scenes, he comes off as really sweet, enthusiastic and outgoing but a bit awkward. Real quality facial expressions. Again, feels believable when Mercutio says "now art thou sociable, now art thou Romeo!". I have a ridiculous soft spot for the moment where he tries to make the "Young Romeo will be older when you find him than he was when you sought him out" joke and it falls completely flat and Nurse just stares at him weirdly.
Overall I appreciate the intent of the actors to give the lovers more of an individual personality than usual, but they take it too far and don't drop it at the appropriate moment
Now, for the secondary cast. Nurse is great, one of the best in the cast for ability to play both comedy and tragedy I think, I liked Lady C's characterization, more bumbling/distressed/trying and failing to parent emotionally inept mom than the usual Slutty Wine Mom which is starting to honestly bore me, Friar Lawrence is really cute and I love they gave him his speech about flowers. The prince is completely forgettable, Lord C a bit too bumbling to be intimidating imho, the Montague nonexistent. I already talked about my issues with Paris
Passing to the boys people actually care about here:
- Tybalt unfortunately doesn't offer much to like. He's very serious and poised and mhh just lacks feral energy. His scene with Lord Capulet is good but the fights are nothing special. He gets slapped by Lord C also :/
- Benvolio is cute! He gets a bit more frat-boyish characterization which is nice after all these tiring nerdy cinnamon roll too pure for this world portrayals, and he's very distinctive from Romeo. I think there's also great Bencutio chemistry here, they had some great scenes in the one after the ball where they look for Romeo together and the "more than prince of cats scenes". The first in particular, featuring the drunk boys trying and failing to make rhymes to conjure Romeo, is one of the better accomplished comedic scenes. Unfortunately there's not as much mileage to take from the "Thou art as hot in thy mood as any Jack in Italy" conversation, he doesn't get mad about it :/. For the rest I like his part in the opening fight and his anger at Romeo in the post-duel scene. Also he's green-coded which is nice
- Mercutio... Agh. So there's a similar problem here as with the lovers, acts great in more light toned, underrated scenes but the main ones are somewhat underwhelming. All the Montacrew conversations are delightful, he's very expressive in his gestures. The aforementioned Bencutio scenes are great and so is the one with the nurse, tho I wish he didn't kiss her, it's not really necessary to resort to sexual harassment to show him as an annoying dick. However there are some points where he comes off WAY more bitter than necessary at Romeo's romantic exploits and ??? People are aware you don't HAVE TO code him as in unrequited love with Romeo if you don't intend to do anything with it, are they? (tho they do have a very cute scene where they lie on the ground together and snuggle as they banter) However, the queen Mab speech and the duel, which are the most important, fall very flat. He can't make up his mind on whether the queen Mab speech is a breakdown or just a ramble to show off his wit, and the Montague boys definitely react like it's the latter. He shows some very nice anger in the "I talk of dreams" bit tho. Overall it's weird and seems boring, too long
I need to have a full paragraph to talk about the duel because it's imho one of the most botched scenes. It's overpowered by the drums, confusing and chaotic not in a good way. Tybalt doesn't seem very interested in fighting Mercutio, nor the other way around, Tybalt seems actually almost uneasy and like he accepted because he was embarrassed to refuse. However this doesn't reflect in the actual fight, which is very violent where this would make me expect a Zeffirelli-like, playful and dramatic duel that goes tragically wrong. Mercutio's death is fairly cold, save for the plague o'er both your houses line which is always awesome, and maybe i influenced by the musical but there's a strong lack of reaction and affection from the Montague boys, they don't touch or hug or even like... Cry or anything. I do like Romeo and Tybalt's duel, in particularly the fact it's mainly a fistfight, to emphasize how much rawer and realer it is than the first one - tho again, because the first one is more violent than warranted the contrast loses a little in strength. There's also no emotion or reaction whatsoever from Tybalt at any point which is a little weird given how this started.
Romeo's reaction is also not great. He's mainly angry, although understandably, doesn't seem to feel guilty or sad at all about either Tybalt or Mercutio. He also repeatedly punches Tybalt's corpse, which... This coupled with the fact they keep him killing Paris, but not the scene where he talks to Tybalt's corpse in the crypt is a little weird. I know some people like to play Romeo's arc as a descent into darkness with him losing his principles and natural gentleness as he's pushed off the deep end, and I'm not necessarily opposed to it, but I don't think anyone involved in this has the capability to handle that well, so it just seems strange and out of character.
He does break down a little in the following scene with Friar Lawrence, but still he doesn't seen particularly mad about anything but his banishment. I do love how he emphasize his feeling of betrayal from his One Trusted Adult tho.
So, overall I really like this. Great cast, some wonderful ideas, very vivid and fun to see. I just wish they could have balanced tragedy and comedy better because literally all the issues come from there

Blue Jeans [Cris & Leo]
Who: Leonardo and Cristian Capulet
What: Take a horseback ride around the estate together.
Where: Capulet Estate
When: Sunday, September 15th
It had been a while since Leo had been on the back of a horse, and when Cristian had asked for his company he agreed without any argument, despite being told to dress casually. Leo avoided telling Cristian that the jeans he wore happened to be new. His eyes moved over to the submissive, a smile on his face as he took the sight in. "Do you normally do this alone? Go around the estate on horseback?" Leo asked as his eyes left the other male to scan the surrounding area for somewhere to stop. He would need a break from the saddle soon, being so out of practice, and he spotted a pond up ahead and decided it might be a good spot to just relax for a moment. He would suggest it as they got closer, he thought to himself.
It was routine-- Cristian took a horse out (which was far more enjoyable and easier than walking the entire estate) at least once a month, in addition to any weekend after they'd had a particularly bad storm to survey the estate grounds. He did it to keep an eye on the groundskeeper's work in addition to spot anything in particular that might need extra attention. It also, simply, was an excuse for a rather peaceful and enjoyable ride. Cristian had learned to ride growing up, but hadn't had much of an interest for it. Since beginning his work for Lord Tybalt, however, he'd grown to enjoy the activity more. What was perhaps unusual, was the urge he'd had to extend the invite to Leo just days prior. The dominant had invited him out a handful of times now, and Cristian had been looking for an opportunity to extend an invite in return. While the activity perhaps wasn't.. a typical thing two might do, he figured it couldn't hurt to see if Leo did in fact have any interest. Low and behold.. He'd accepted. "Normally," he replied with a nod as he turned to face Leo, though his body remained forward as the horse carried on slowly. "I find it helps clear my mind, in addition to keeping an eye on the grounds themselves. Sometimes after storms a tree might fall, or some branches, and the groundskeeper needs alerted. Since we only have one individual maintaining.. well... everything outside right now, it tends to be a priority-based workflow, and it's easy for issues on the outer edges of the property to get missed at times.”
Honestly, Leo could see how riding out on the estate alone on horseback could be so peaceful. At the same time he wondered that they didn't have more people to handle the work so that Cristian didn't have to go out of his way to do it, although it seemed as though he didn't mind so much. "Well, you don't have to keep going alone, if you don't want. I know you asked me this time, but I wouldn't mind joining you on any other rides as well." Leo offered, before nodding in the direction of the pond. "You think we could stop for a little bit? Or will that mess with your plans too much?"
Cristian glanced over at the pond and back towards Leo, already steering his horse in the direction of the water. The pond had two wooden steaks in the ground on the far side with metal rings for tethering horses to. "We can stop for a moment.... Everything alright?"
Following Cristian towards the pond he suggested, Leo gave the submissive a smile, "Yeah, everything's fine. Just not as used to being on a horse as I used to be. Plus, it's a nice day, I don't think we're in a rush, and it might be nice to just relax and enjoy the view. I'm not always the best at slowing down. Why not take advantage of it while we can?" He shrugged slightly as they came up on the pond, and he swung down from his horse to tie his to one of the rings.
Not as use to being on a horse... so Leo was obviously sore, he mused, chuckling. “We can stop for a bit,” he agreed, following the others lead and dismounting before tying up the horse as well so he couldn’t run off. “Glad to see you took my suggestion for jeans by the way. I know it’s a bit warm today, but trust me it’s better than risking chafing.”
As Leo stepped away from his horse he glanced at Cristian before he let out a low chuckle. “Yes, well, you made it quite clear that any other pants wouldn’t be acceptable. Impressed by my casual dress today?” He teased a bit, knowing though, that had it not been suggested he likely wouldn’t have been found in jeans to begin with.
“Fishing for compliments, Sir?” Cristian countered with a grin, gaze sweeping over the other’s frame for a moment before he turned to pet his horse’s face and avoid the other’s gaze a moment. Cristian had worn an older pair of jeans with boots and an older shirt, not wanting to dirty anything nice. Of course, Leo somehow had still managed to look dressed up despite jeans— and more attractive than Cristian wanted to admit. The fact they’d fucked certainly hadn’t helped the attraction either, and he was liking forward to another chance to submit to the Dominant in the future. “But yes, if you ego requires that much attention, you’re plenty attractive in more than just a suit,” he added, glancing over at the Dom again.
With a laugh and a shrug Leo watched as Cristian pet his horse’s face. He didn’t need the compliments, he was likely too confident for his own good, but he still enjoyed hearing it from Cristian. His gaze ran over the submissive appreciatively before lifting to see his blue eyes looking back at him again. A smirk passed over his face as he moved toward him slowly, “Good to know that you’ve noticed.” He stepped up next to Cristian, closer than was likely necessary, his hand lifting to run along the neck of Cristian’s horse, although his eyes remained on the other male. “We can sit for a little, or if you want we can walk?”
“Of course I’ve noticed. I would suggest to just sit, but risk dirtying your jeans? Are you sure you could cope?” He suggested with a smirk, surprised by the choice and grateful they were still on maintained areas of the ground routinely mowed versus taller grass that would have made sitting a joke. He could easier get a grass stain out of pants, but wasn’t so sure he could say the same for Leo. ”Forgive me, Sir, but you don’t strike me as much of an outdoorsman, and that’s coming from someone who hates camping.” He glanced over at the horse Leo had been riding, asking, “When’s the last time you rode?”
Leo arched a brow at Cristian, amusement showing in his expression at the sight of the submissive’s smirk and commentary. “Are you implying that I can’t handle getting dirty, Cris?” Leo was wondering if he would have to prove himself. Perhaps with his suits he would prefer not getting them dirty, but these jeans? And even in suits, he would get them dirty if his job required it. He wasn’t generally concerned. After all, he had been in the military, and military life didn’t care if you objected to dirt, mud, and well... other things, but he didn’t want to think about the last bit. Leo let out a long breath as he tried to remember the last time he had ridden a horse. “It’s likely been....” he thought over one of the dignitaries he had worked with. Riding out with him at one of the estates with other important men and women. “Maybe five years? No... yes... maybe that.”
“That explains the need for a break,” Cristian responded with a chuckle, one hand reaching out and tugging on the Dominant’s shirt to pull him closer. While he still wasn’t sure— aside from some scenes— what was between them, the other pulling him into a closet the previous week had been enough to tip off that the attention was more than welcome.
With a slight smile on his face, Leo allowed Cristian to pull him closer. “Are you going to tease me for being a little saddle sore? Don’t worry, I’ll adapt fast enough... that is if you bring me out again.” His arms naturally circled the submissive and pulled him in tighter before leaning in to kiss him gently. He pulled back enough to let his eyes roam over the other male’s face, a smile reforming on his face as he thought about how only a short time ago the idea of kissing someone would have completely shut him off.
“It could always be worse,” Cristian suggested, smiling as he leaned in to return the kiss. Leo might have been a new and confusing topic— but he was still one the submissive found himself enjoying none the less. “I initially tried to do this grounds check a bit earlier this month,” he added as the kiss broke, still smiling despite what he was about to say. “But let’s just say doing it the day after you came over left me more than a little saddle sore... I ended up turning the horse around five minutes in and calling it a day.”
At the admission Leo couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped him. Cristian was sore after their scene, which brought back rather pleasant memories for him. He knew he should have likely felt bad for it, but instead he was feeling more than pleased. “Ah, what a shame.” He managed to say, a grin on his face at odds with the sentiment of the words. “Maybe next time I’ll be careful not to be so rough with you before horseback riding.” He made no promises. He couldn’t be held responsible for his actions around the submissive, what with how attracted he was to him.
Cristian’s lips slid into a smirk, pleased with the mention again of a next time, and amused by Leo’s dismissal of it all. “Why do I get the feeling you’re just saying that to be polite,” he mused aloud. Giving the horse a final pet, Cristian stepped back towards a flat area in the grass and took a spot on the ground, beckoning Leo to follow with the crook of his finger. “Come ‘ere.”
The grin on Leo's face grew. "Probably because you and I both know that that's exactly why I said it. However, I like to think that you wouldn't mind if I wasn't being serious." Leo followed Cristian, watching him sit on the ground, and laughing softly at his demand. Still, it was so damn cute he couldn't help but comply. Lowering himself down next to the submissive. "Now you've got me here. What'll you do with me?" He asked playfully.
“This,” he informed, reaching for the collar of Leo’s shirt, pulling him into a hungry kiss. As much as he enjoyed when the other took control, it sent a shiver down his spine each time he could catch Leo off guard for even the slightest moment, initiating something himself. Cristian’s other palm pressed against the ground for balance as his hand snaked around the Dominant’s neck, encouraging Leo’s frame closer as the kiss deepened.
A flash of surprise passed over Leo’s face as Cristian pulled him in for a kiss. He liked it when the submissive took control, it wasn’t something he normally allowed, but in this case he enjoyed it. Leo moved in closer to Cristian, one hand remaining on the ground, the other skimmed over the submissive’s abdomen, over his side, and the wrapped around him. He pulled back a fraction with the hint of a smile curving up the corner of his lips, “If that’s what you want from me, then I’m happy to oblige.” He closed the gap again, his lips claiming the submissive’s once more.
Cristian leaned into the touch, enjoying the relative privacy of their distance from any wandering eyes. He felt a bit like a school boy again as he nipped encouragingly at Leo’s lips, provoking him to continue. There was a lot he wanted from Leo, though for the moment he’d settle for making out like randy teenagers.
Leo enjoyed the way that Cristian leaned into his touch. Even more than that, he loved the way he kept encouraging his attention. Naturally responding to him, and Leo found himself moving to pin Cristian’s arms overhead, straddling him, and leaning down to kiss him once before looking down and meeting his gaze to see if he should continue, or if he should stop. They were in the open, not that Leo cared when it came to himself, but he also didn’t care to potentially get Cristian caught simply because he couldn’t keep his own hands to himself.
Following Leo’s lead, Cristian relaxed back against the ground, grinning as he felt his arms held firmly above his head, wrists pinned. “Hm... If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you had ulterior motives agreeing to accompany me today.”
He laughed before shaking his head at the comment. “And what if I did have ulterior motives? I wonder if you didn’t invite me thinking that I might have other ideas in mind.” Not that he did. For once, Leo actually agreed to join Cristian because he sought the submissive’s company, and not for any other motives aside from spending time with him. Now that he had Cristian pinned to the ground, however, he certainly wasn’t against anything else that might happen. Ducking his head down to the curve of Cristian’s neck, Leo let his lips brush against his skin.
Cristian’s head tipped back into the grass, craning his neck to the side  to give Leo easier access. “Well I certainly didn’t expect this,” he commented softly, a smile on his lips from how ticklish the faint feel of Leo’s lips and scruff against his own skin, freshly shaven. “If I had, I’d probably have invited you sooner.”
Leo chuckled, his forehead touching Cristian’s shoulder for a moment before lifting his head so that he could look down at the submissive below him. “So, are you telling me that if you had expected this sort of attention I could have been out here riding with you sooner?” Looking down at him now had him thinking back to their first scene, straddling him and trying him to the headboard. A smirk formed on his face at the memory. “I guess I should make sure you know what to expect from me in future.” Leo bent down, back to Cristian’s neck, this time he bit at the submissive’s neck,  then kissed the same spot before moving lower on his neck to do the same thing again.
As tempting as it was to make a joke about riding Cristian refrained. Crude jokes had never been his thing-- to verbalize, at very least. "Should I?" He questioned, one eyebrow quirked in amusement as he gazed at Leo. He couldn't help but chuckle as the Dominant leaned down again, though his breathing quickened and voice dipped into a delighted moan moments later from the sudden jolts of pleasurably pain.
A breathy laugh was all Cristian got in response to his question. He liked this side of him, the amusement and banter, but really? What didn't Leo like about Cristian? Hearing him moan, Leo smiled against his skin. He took one hand away from where he had the other's arms pinned and his free hand slipped under the shirt that Cristian wore to roam up his side as his lips grazed over the surface of the submissive's skin, knowing he'd likely feel the scruff of his beard along his smooth skin.
“I’m not letting you fuck me out in this field if that’s what you’re thinking,” Cristian mused aloud, shivering from the feel of Leo’s fingers against his skin. The thought was tempting though— he just wouldn’t admit it. But being with Leo— and impulsively making out in a field made him feel young again, and he lived for it.  “Don’t even have lube... and told you it makes horseback a bitch.”
Leo couldn't help but laugh. He pulled his head back so that he could look down at Cristian, and cocked a brow at him. "Who said anything about fucking?" A mischievous grin slid over his face and he leaned down to place a kiss on Cristian's lips before adding, "There are other options. Fairly certain I've done it for you before, too." His lips brushed against the submissive's as he spoke before giving him another quick kiss as his hand trailed down until it stopped on Cristian's waist.
“Other options?” He repeated back again curiously as the kiss parted. When Leo’s hand moved south he had an idea of what the other was implying though, giving Leo a rather pointed, amused look. “You’re insatiable, you know that, right?”
Leo shrugged a shoulder and sighed, “Yeah. I’m fully aware. Try being me. It’s complete hell.” Except, it wasn’t that bad, but in his defense, Cristian had that effect on him. He’d had a taste, and it was like opening the flood gates. He pulled back, releasing Cristian’s other hand. “I suppose that I could stop. Be a good boy. Keep my hands to myself.” He lifted one hand to run his fingers through his hair as his eyes ran over Cristian below him, quite a sight, dark hair, light eyes nature all around him.
Cristian chuckled, gaze following Leo's till it met. "What you thinking 'bout?"
Moving from Cristian, Leo sat down next to him, drawing his knees toward his chest and draping his arms over them. He looked sideways at the submissive before answering, a light chuckle falling from his lips. "I'm not sure you want to know." How could he tell him that he was admiring the way he looked in that moment without making it seem too much. Leo wasn't keen on putting that much of himself on the line. Not so soon. Then he considered, telling the truth causes less issues in the end. "But if you must know, I was just thinking about how you looked just then." His gaze went to the pond that was now straight ahead of him, focusing on the scenery instead.
The sudden movement confused Cristian, surprised when Leo released him and sat beside him instead. He moved, lifting his upper body weight and leaning on his elbows and lower arms. “Why’d you stop then?” He asked curiously, wondering if there was more to his answer. “I didn’t mean to kill the mood asking— though the horses might get a bit restless if we stay too long.”
“Did you not want me to stop? Horses or no horses?” Leo asked, turning his attention back to Cristian. His eyes ran over the submissive’s frame before he shook his head with a huff of laughter. “I’m not sure if you’re aware of how attractive I find you,” he admitted. “And you didn’t kill the mood, I could just as easily continue on. I don’t want you to think that’s the only reason I want to spend time with you, though.”
Leo's words caused Cristian to hesitate replying, touched and unsure how to immediately respond. Leo constantly tripped him up with words that left him wondering just what he meant to the Dominant, or if Leo was even aware of the effect he was having. Moving to sit up, Cristian responded, "Careful there, Sir. If I didn't know any better I'd think you wanted more from me than just our existing arrangement." He took a moment before moving to stand and extending a hand to Leo.  "We should finish up the ride and start to head back."
There was a moment where Leo watched Cristian after he spoke. He tried to play it off, trying to smile, but he wondered if the submissive knew that his comment was spot on.  He cleared his throat, and managed to say, "Apparently, careful isn't my forte." He certainly wouldn't mind having more than the current arrangement, but perhaps right now wasn't the time to go into detail about all of that. Taking Cristian's hand, he rose to standing and nodded, "Yeah,  can't have these horses getting too restless, after all."

mulling over my recent rewatch of the hungarian retj (rómeó és júlia) some more and while it’s still one of the best versions of the show, some things just stuck out like a sore thumb, such as
the choreography. now, i’m not in any way an expert or even amateur on dance, but 90% of this duda éva mess featured the dancers hopping around like bunnies and doing weird YMCA-style hand movements like some nineties nightmare. lehetsz király is especially an offender, but verona had some questionable choreography too. i’ve never liked the choreography in this version much, but in this rerun it was somehow more glaring. i guess since then i’ve gone back to the french choreography and since redha was directly inspired by jerome robbins’ work in west side story...well, yeah...
the part where one of the capulet servants gets kissed by a hyper rómeó after le balcon and the servant recognizes rómeó as a montague becomes unintentionally amusing when you consider that in this version, the differences between the montagues and capulets in terms of clothing and physical appearance are subtle and minimal at best, nonexistent at worst. how the hell did she recognize rómeó as a montague???? by his blue blouse? they’re not color coded, so blue wouldn’t automatically mean montague in this world. so what gives?
speaking of which - ditching the color-coded dress, while it arguably adds more ‘‘realism” (not really, imho), muddles the action a lot. in the original french, you always knew who was what, and not only that, but there were strong characteristics in their dance that differentiated them more. the montagues were wild cards, the capulets more restrained and scheming. it affirmed the divisive reality of the feud. in the hungarian, most of the feud is fought by the head of the families, which is a reversal both of the french and shakespeare. during la vengeance, if it weren’t for benvolio’s presence on one of the sides, i wouldn’t have known which side wanted to protect romeo and which side didn’t. they were all dressed in the same sleek dark leather costumes. i guess that was the subtle ‘‘point” of the production, but unless you show a difference other than clothing, all you’ll have is just people of the same ethnicity, same gestures, same choreography doing shit to each other and little understanding of why. so though the hungarian actually brings out the feud more and its violence, the french is actually more convincing
that orchestra. this may be due to the poor sound engineering of the dvd that privileged the singers than the instruments, but it still sounds awfully tinny and weak. the strings were so thin they were threadbare; the tempos were all over the place. songs that are definitely not meant to be played fast were played fast and other parts were slowed down to an excruciating degree. the arranger cut out the solos in the latter part of the choruses, so the hungarian versions feel more repetitious than even the french, even when they add new lyrics. they obviously got more of their budget toward the FIRE ACROBATICS and neat stage effects
the acting. better than the french, obviously, since these are theater-theater people trained to do everything all at once. the script gives more of a plot and story to the musical-operetta than the french, which was more concert-based. but because of the dramatic needs of the story, the singing on stage suffered A LOT. imagine almost 3 hours of shouting and belting and everyone running around like kids high on candy. my ears were ringing at the end something awful. the french had pacing problems too, but that was because the addition of extraneous songs that could have been cut (le pouvoir, le poète, however much i like the latter) and some lazy directing. the hungarian has more ear fatigue; the energy that they establish is not maintainable for long. as a result, damien sargue sang much better, with better expression, than attila dolhai, who sounds like an operatically trained singer. hommonay zsolt as párisz was also operatically trained, it sounds like, but even at times didn’t sound good at all, especially during la folie, which should have been a picnic for him. at least the chorus was consistently good.
everyone’s an asshole except résj. this production went back to the original shakespeare characterizations for some of the characters, particularly for the capulets and the nurse, so yeah. but where shakespeare was more nuanced and realistic in his portrayal of the capulets, here they’re mostly unlikable dysfunctional assholes. paris was a sleazeball (though the show tried to say he cared about juliet enough to want to die in her tomb hahahaha no), capulet a doddering fool, lady capulet chronically unfaithful to the extreme, the nurse bawdy and particularly tactless, and tybalt a walking talking disaster on two legs, an epileptic severus snape if there wasn’t one (even my dad thought he'd make a great snape, so it’s not just my hp-addled brain) plus incest issues with his aunt and cousin. lady montague is fierce as fuck, but of course her role is lesser, benvolio acts almost exactly like mercutio except he has a more puppy-ish air and mercutio is more eloquent and cynical. mercutio was closer to the original shakespeare, which means he could be a douchecanoe at times. all in all, the only truly sympathetic characters are rómeó and júlia, which would be terrific (kill the trend of making them into stupid horny teenagers DEAD, i mean it) if it didn’t feel so cheap and vaguely manipulative. of course you’d sympathize with them - they’re the only ones who aren’t crazy, high, mentally troubled, or into the stupid feud in the first place. of course, they’re entertaining to watch, much like you would a trainwreck, but the melodrama does reach a point of incredulity.
speaking of résj, while they’re cute and all, (if way too old) they tend to feel almost extraneous to this production, so focused on the feud and violence as it is. this should have been called egy orült villág or something like that because that’s really what it was.
the song order. the show does make it work, barely, but it’s still jarring and strange, even after all these years. i can’t get over c’est le jour and c’est pas ma faute switched around, and tu dois te marier following verona must have been one of the strangest decisions they’ve ever made. i would have liked to have been there in the room where they decided on this order. it isn’t really intuitive, just the opposite. it did solve some of the pacing problems of the french, but musically i think it suffered a lot. gyulölet and szívbol szeretni being close together was weird as well, although the former made for a good number. how strange
the ho yay is incredible in this version. like, purposely fanfiction-y. i never paid much credence to the tycutio and bencutio shippers of the shakespeare fandom, but someone in this production obviously did. mercutio is out-and-out bi, but you can probably read anyone in this production as such. tybalt is an atomic bomb of repression so of course he gets read as such. it adds nothing to the production except, of course, the pleasure of seeing attractive people being all over each other. those wily fangirls are at it again
OH I HAD NEARLY FORGOTTEN - in párisz halála, paris’ death scene, he says that he believes rómeó was here to desecrate júlia’s grave, as in the original shakespeare. rómeó actually had to tell him straight-up that júlia was his wife. but in la folie, the people were all crying that júlia’s death was rómeó’s fault, so obviously paris would have known that they had been together. so what gives? why wouldn’t hungarian paris make that connection and tried to turn him in on the basis that he was responsible for júlia’s death, officially ruled as a suicide? this is verona, after all, where everyone knows everything about everyone, and especially in the hungarian version they found out awfully quickly about résj. in the french, you sense that the capulets are in denial about the rumors (though french!capulet seems to hint that he knows based on his bitter ‘‘et je maudis tous ces amants’’ line) but the hungarian family seemed to have believed it quickly. so yeah, that’s a strange plot hole. i’m guessing galambos attila had to write this le duel reprise quickly and just fell back on shakespeare since there is no french equivalent.

Act 1, Scene 2 of Twisted Veronaville: The Homosexual Supporting Cast
THE LAST PAGE
Tumblr media
Every four years, the Summerdreams host a party and invite both the Capps and the Montys, in hopes of establishing peace. This used to be once per year, but got moved to four years after Mercutio ended up in the hospital from an especially bad fight with Tybalt.
The most recent party was a special one: Oberon and Titania have once again sworn their loyalty to each other, and Puck had his first kiss with Hermia.
Puck: Congrats on getting married again, Mom!
Titania: Thanks, dear. This party was a success, wasn't it?
Puck: Seems so! But Mercutio saw me kissing Hermia, and I think he's upset.
Oberon: You can talk to him about it, can you? Just host another party...we'll make it a boys only party, just so it won't be repetitive! How about that?
Puck: (I'm not sure if I'm a boy, though)...Sure?
Tumblr media
And so he did. A whole new party, just to apologize to one guy.
Puck: ...And I'm really sorry if I hurt your feelings.
Mercutio: You hosted another party just for this? It's not that big of a deal, Puck. I'm honestly more upset that you invited Tybalt to this than I am about the kiss.
Tybalt: I'M THREE FEET AWAY FROM YOU, DUMBASS! I CAN HEAR YOU!
Puck: It's a formality. We invite at least one member from both families so none of you think we're taking sides. I've seen what Tybalt has done to the people who only align themselves with your family.
Tybalt: I CAN STILL HEAR YOU!
Mercutio: Yeah, that's fair. But in all seriousness, I'm not mad about the kiss. Sure it sucks that she didn't like me, but she chose you. I'm not going to break up our friendship over a Capp, even if it's someone cool like Hermia.
Puck: Thanks, Mercutio.
Romeo: ...Puck, I think you should've just invited Hermia and Mercutio instead of having an "all-boys party" just to have this conversation.
Tybalt: For once, I actually agree with Romeo.
Romeo: Nobody asked!
Tybalt: I'M LITERALLY ON YOUR SIDE YOU PIECE OF-
Tumblr media
The party was a success...for Puck. As for Tybalt, he was just angry. Angrier than usual, and he needed some way to release it. But Juliette wouldn't listen to him and Consort was at work, so that left only one person.
Tybalt: And then that fucker had the audacity to talk shit about me the entire time!
Hermia: (Where the hell is Grandpa when you need him?) Okay? Why do you care so much about what Mercutio thinks of you?
Tybalt: Stop making this weird!
Hermia: I mean, you bring him up every time we talk. It feels like you constantly think about him.
Tybalt: I do!
Hermia: ...
Tybalt: ...I DIDN'T MEAN IT LIKE THAT!
Hermia: Sure...whatever helps you sleep at night, buddy.

And here lies the surviving sisters of the Capp family, one with many children and the other with none. But the two have something in common...
Goneril: I can't stop thinking about Bianca...
Regan: I hate her stupid glasses and her pretty face...
Goneril: I hate her stupid soft hair and lips...GAH! Why do I keep thinking about her?
Regan: She's a Monty! I can't be thinking about a Monty this way!
Goneril: I need to focus on my family!
Regan: And my job!
Goneril/Regan: And also, I'm married!
Kent: Regan, are you okay?
Regan: Kent, not right now. I'm having a crisis.
Kent: Okay, geez...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kent: So yeah, Cornwall is insufferable. I'm thinking of moving out soon, but I don't know if I have enough money to live on my own.
Bianca: Do you want to be roommates?
Kent: Would that be weird? I'm a Capp and you're a Monty.
Bianca: Oh, I'm not worried about that! I've stopped caring about my family thinks a long time ago. And you should, too.
Kent: Well, alright! I'll see you soon.
*beep*
Antonio: Bianca, who were you talking to?
Bianca: Kent.
Antonio: That Capp guy? I told you to drop him a long time ago.
Bianca: You still care about the feud?
Antonio: Of course I did! They murdered my wife!
Bianca: And you're sure it's them, and not someone else?
Antonio: Who else would've done it?
Tumblr media
And lying near the river that separates the Capps and Montys, lies two peculiar forces...
???: Have you found anyone worthy from the other towns?
???: There's one person. His name is Tank Grunt, from Strangetown. He's physically strong and appears noble.
???: I see. He should have no problem handling the fights in Veronaville. Will he cooperate, though?
???: I believe so. Who wouldn't want the chance to be a hero? The one who defies the fates set up by the Watcher and forges their own path?
???: I suppose you're right. Let's bring him here tomorrow...
