BnHA Chapter 318: On Your Left

Previously on BnHA: The Hawksquad+Lurkers were all “well this sucks” and sat around a bit talking about how maybe they should actually come up with a new plan that is actually good, but then in the end they were like “nah.” Deku was all, “THERE’S SOMETHING INSIDE ME THAT PULLS BENEATH THE SURFACE!! CONSUMING, CONFUSING!! THIS LACK OF SELF CONTROL I FEAR IS NEVERENDING. IT’S HAUNTING HOW I CANT SEEM TO FIND MYSELF AGAIN. MY WALLS ARE CLOSING IN.” Just, literally that whole entire song. All Might was all “Deku you should take care of yourself, try eating a thing,” and Deku was all “BYE, ALL MIGHT,” and just LEFT. He left!!! What the fuck!!!

Today on BnHA: Endeavor is all, “maybe if Deku didn’t listen to All Might he’ll listen to me instead.” Deku is all, “[doesn’t listen to Endeavor]” because, well, yeah. The Vestiges are all, “surprisingly, even we are a little concerned -- maybe you should get some rest, kid.” Deku is all, “((Ò ‸ Ó)).” The Vestiges are all, “holy shit.” Deku is all, “[wanders the ruined city streets terrifying the populace on account of him looking like Shelob had a baby with one of the Nazgul].” Some shriveled-up puppeteer villain asshole is all, “HORIKOSHI SAID IT’S MY TURN TO ATTACK DEKU TODAY SO I AM GOING TO SUMMON MY FRIGHTENED HELPLESS ATTACK MOB!!” Kacchan is all “WHADDYA MEAN THEY FOUND THE NERD!!! -- oh wait, that’s me, I found him. I found the nerd, you guys.” And just in time, too. I was about to owe a whole lot of people a whole lot of dollars.

so I have been super good about spoilers this week as always, but let me tell you guys, for the past 36 hours my dash filters have basically been nonstop “manga spoilers” this and “bnha 318” that, and so I’m coming in with a fair amount of hype here. your move, Horikoshi

oh, good! they got Endeavor to call Deku to try to talk him out of it. what a great and wonderful plan

“listen up kid, you haven’t slept since March and you are basically a walking biohazard right now, I’m just telling it like it is. didn’t you get shot like three times?? and there was a whole thing about how you urgently needed medical attention?? and supposedly we gave it to you, but I mean you haven’t even changed your clothes and don’t seem to have any fresh bandages or anything, so did we?? did we, really?? and also we all got blown up yesterday, so yeah.” hmm he’s making some reasonable points here you guys, but you sure do go on and on, Endeavor

oh he says foreign aid is finally on its way! I’m sure they’ll be very helpful. I mean in fairness they can hardly be worse than the home-grown heroes at this point

hey Enji, could you maybe try appealing to Deku the sixteen-year-old human boy, as opposed to Deku The World’s Last Hope? he does have value beyond his quirk. I know that’s always been an incredibly difficult concept for you to grasp, but could you maybe TRY, jesus

(ETA: so at first when I got to the end of this chapter I was wondering if Katsuki B. had somehow summoned his alternate-universe counterpart through trippy OFA space telepathy lol. but in the original Japanese there’s no reference to “we”, so this appears to be a mistranslation. this line should probably read more like “if there’s something/someone out there that would be able to complement/complete the current Midoriya Izuku [it would be]…” which, oh hello, is that Horikoshi once again reaffirming that Deku and Bakugou complete each other lol. “guess what guys, the Vestiges ship it too" heck yeah. they know what’s up!)

(ETA: imagine what this must look like to Deku though. he’s been caught up in this dark cloud of despair and exhaustion that’s been building up over... I’m gonna go ahead and say “weeks”, because yeah. and now he finds himself here, in the place where All Might’s legacy ended and the torch was passed to him. and the world is in ruins, and he’s surrounded by frightened people who are all trying to hurt him -- because who isn’t trying to hurt him, these days -- and he’s scrambling to figure this all out, but meanwhile the weariness is finally starting to catch up to him, and so he’s basically just standing there in a fog of complete and utter misery.

and then all of a sudden through that haze, he hears the one voice that’s more familiar than any other that he knows. like, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he thought he was just imagining it at first. Kacchan showing up to save him right when he’s at his most desperate and feeling the most alone. Kacchan, showing up to save him.

this is the person he always looked up to as a child (to be fair he was quite a strange child lmao). the person who was even closer to him than All Might. the person he always thought was amazing. and bam, here he is now. appearing in the sky out of nowhere to one-shot the bad guy with a single blast (which, btw, that was his armor-piercing attack too lmao dslkjlk take it easy there kiddo). like, that must have felt absolutely surreal to him, especially coming at a time when he’s already half-delirious and barely hanging on to reality. he must have really thought that he was losing it there for a second.

but he’s really there. it really is him. and for this brief moment -- before the rest of the situation catches up to him, and he remembers about all of the fucked-up AFO stuff, and remembers why he was so afraid and why he was pushing everyone away -- for just this one brief moment, he’s too exhausted and stunned to do anything except to just react. just stands there, looking up at him in awe.

and you know, it almost reminds me of...

just. you guys. the character development. the freaking character development. someone who brings reassurance. someone who shows up and makes you think, “oh, it’s all going to be okay now, because [person] is here.” the role reversals. the growth. the payoff!! because who is the one person who always had faith that Kacchan would one day grow up to become an amazing hero like that. WHO IS IT. YOU ALREADY KNOW.

So hear me out, what if, and this is pretty much pure crack speculation, but what if the First (can't remember his name rn) managed to transfer his powers almost accidentally.

Sidenote, this employs the thought that the second isn't Bakugo, though it technically could work if it was him, so you could employ the thought, but idk if (specificallly) you would want to.

So like, here's the deal:

•We know all of the previous OFA users have died in battle (aside from the Fourth and All Might thus far), so the First definitely died fighting.

•We know OFA is only passed when you will it to pass along

•We know there needs to be a consumption of DNA.

•We don't know how the fuck they came to this conclusion. Thus my theory applies.

Ahem. First user is dying after fighting AFO. The Second and Third are obviously around during that, and manages to get the First user out somewhere after AFO leaves, and they get to talk to him as he's dying. He expresses regret over not being able to stop his brother, and feels as if his power should be the key, wishing he could at the very least pass it to the Second guy to give him a better chance.

And this is where the theory gets unlikely: now obviously the other two guys are all emotional and stuff, you know the drill, and in this scenario the Second kisses the First, transferring the quirk through saliva. And when it manifests, the Third and the Second are able to figure out what happened.

Now will this ever be the case? No. Is it a fun and gay way to explain things? Yes. Can I think of another way to figure out how they discovered the ability to pass along quirks? Nope. Is there certainly gonna be a totally different reason eventually explained? Probably.

All that being said, until then I'm sticking with my doomed headcanon.

Also, I specified you because you're a big BakuDeku shipper, and idk if you'd like that theory if you thought that guy was Bakugo. You know?

I knew as soon as I read the first paragraph that this was leading into the rightfully-popular "First and Second made out" theory lol.

anyways anon, while you're correct that I do still think Into the Bakuverse is happening (hence why we still haven't seen Deku use the Second's quirk, or seen any interactions between them), I do enjoy this theory as an alternative (even though I still think it leaves a few holes in its wake, such as the fact that by the time the quirk made its way down to Shino they had figured out additional stuff about it like the fact that it could be powered up), and I fully support all First-and-Second-made-out theories just in general. like, we can probably just go ahead and say that part of it is canon anyway lol. at least in my book.

I think the thing that make me think that the 2nd user Is not an alternative bakugou is that they don't show Deku having any reaction to him looking like bakugou which make me thing is not mean to being that deep.

ah, but people made the exact same argument about Dabi not being Touya. “if it really is him then why didn’t Endeavor recognize him?”, etc. the answer of course was that it simply never occurred to Endeavor that Dabi -- a black-haired adult villain who was very much alive -- could possibly be Touya, his white-haired son who wanted nothing more than to be a hero, and whom he last saw as a child and believed was dead.

similarly, in Izuku’s mind, Kacchan is a blond sixteen-year-old who is very much alive, as opposed to an adult brunet ghost whose soul is trapped in a mystical quirk realm. to me it’s very believable he wouldn’t immediately notice the similarities, simply because he has no reason to be looking for them. aside from that, it doesn’t necessarily look like the Second has actually shared his name or the details of his quirk with Deku yet either, and we’ve yet to see Deku actually look at his face. so it could be that he hasn’t really gotten a close look at him yet (which could continue to be the case for some time if Katsuki B. is anywhere near as bad at playing nice with Deku as his counterpart, lol). so this may simply be a case of “stay tuned”, as for all we know in 311 Deku might just suddenly be all “HEY HOLY SHIT WAIT A SECOND” lol.

my first thought when i read the chapter was that number 2 might be bakugo's ancestor but i like the alt timeline theory a lot better lol

this is the other likely possibility imo. I think we’ve passed the point of Horikoshi being able to explain all these similarities away as coincidence. there’s no way he just accidentally designed a character who (1) looks almost exactly like Bakugou, (2) has a hero costume eerily similar to Bakugou’s, complete with gauntlets, (3) has a gruff, aggressive personality like Bakugou, and even (4) shares specific little behaviors and mannerisms like kicking down doors and being focused on victory. on top of that, the slow and painstaking way he’s revealed this character in bits and pieces, only now showing us his face after all this time, and even now still withholding his name and his quirk, make it even less likely that this is just some incidental character imo. there’s been way too much deliberate build-up there.

as far as I can see there are three possible explanations here.

1) Horikoshi is just deliberately trolling us for the lulz. he’s fully aware of the similarities to Kacchan (because it’s impossible for him not to be), and just enjoys seeing what theories fandom will spew out next. this is certainly possible, but it would sure be a very different side of Horikoshi than we’ve ever seen in the past lol.

2) the ancestor/reincarnation theory is true. again, this is very possible as well, and would explain the similarities between Bakugou and the Second. however, in my view, every single argument that people make against time travel -- it would come out of nowhere, it lacks a clear narrative purpose, it would feel out of place with the canon that’s been established thus far, etc. -- applies to the ancestor theory as well. my biggest qualm with the ancestor theory is that it’s far more spiritual than any of the other story elements we’ve gotten thus far. even the Vestiges, who basically are souls as far as I’m concerned, are technically explained away in the story as being part of the original quirk users’ “quirk factors” or whatever. like, there was some whole long-winded explanation involving anecdotes about organ donors and shit. Horikoshi really tried to make it as sciency as possible, even though souls/spirits would have been a much simpler explanation. so for me, the ancestor theory feels a bit more farfetched just because it feels like more of a departure from all that. again, that certainly doesn’t rule it out, though.

and lastly, 3) Bakuverse. AU Bakugou time traveling from a doomed timeline where AFO won. it also explains the similarities between him and the Katsuki we know, and explains the differences as well. it’s not without its flaws of course, but imo out of these three explanations, this is the one that’s most keeping in line with what Horikoshi has given us so far. that doesn’t mean it’ll actually happen, but basically this is my reasoning. every time I go over it all in my head this is what I keep coming back to. we’ll see, though!

Why would an au bakugou have different hair and eye color? Wouldn’t he be a different person then?

no, just the same person with slightly different chromosomes. basically, it’s an alternate universe with more than 200 years’ worth of the butterfly effect in play, so it’s only natural that there are going to be a lot of changes. one thing plays out slightly differently in that universe, and it leads to another thing happening in an entirely different way, and each change spawns a brand new ripple effect of even more changes. if anything, one might expect the two Bakugous to be even more different than they already are. but because it’s an AU that’s being carefully guided and directed by the author’s hand, it can be as different or similar as Horikoshi desires at the end of the day.

exactly, lol. for anyone who’s seen the Spider-Man film I stole this theory’s name from, you know that Peter B. Parker has brown hair while the Peter Parker from Miles’ universe is a blond. so it’s not like it’s a new concept for AUs or anything. and as this second anon points out, Masaru does have brown hair so it’s definitely within the realm of physical possibility without being a huge leap.

hey makese :) loved the into the bakuverse meta. personally i am between ALT!Baku and reincarnation. gotta ask though: "leader": doesn't the third use "leader" to describe the second? the paneling(?) implies it. As well as the fact that the second seemed to be in charge when they barged into the vault and later when he talked to deku. it would also be another bkg-parallel since bkg is (described as) a leader...

you’re absolutely right anon, and a few other people have pointed this out to me as well lol I’m just dumb. while it’s still technically possible that “Leader” is a different character entirely, it’s much more likely that the Third was referring to the Second there, especially since that line is when we finally cut to Two’s face for the first time.

I agree with you though that if anything it would only strengthen the theory, since Katsuki B. likely shares his counterpart’s desire to be the greatest, strongest hero. it’s possible that in his universe he did succeed at becoming the number one, which would explain why he was the one to take on the responsibility of trying to carry out whatever insane plot they hatched to travel back in time and undo AFO’s reign of terror.

Previously on BnHA: Nana and the Gang were all, “hey Deku, we can read your thoughts and feelings so we should already know the answer to this, but for some reason we want to quiz you on whether or not you’d be down to kill Shigaraki Tomura.” Deku was all, “um okay, well tbh, probably not seeing as Saving People has been my entire thing since literally the start of the series.” The Vestiges were all, “yes that makes perfect sense and again we already knew that, but well, good for you buddy and I’m glad we had this talk. Anyway I guess we should ask these two cryptic fuckers in the corner to finally turn around now before we run out of -- ” and then the chapter ended. Because OF COURSE IT DID.

okay! so this tells me a number of things, though

basically the minute that Hawks learned about One for All, he realized that anyone connected to Deku (e.g. Inko) would be a target for AFO. AFO wants OFA, meaning AFO wants Deku, and one of the easiest ways to get to Deku would be to target his family

Hawks therefore realized that Inko needed to be placed into protective custody

but the fact that ALL of the hero course students’ families (and is it only the U.A. hero course, or all of the hero course students across the country?) are being given protection tells me that Hawks and co. don’t want to single Deku out as being important. so then it looks like they’re not going to tell everyone about OFA (or at least not the public. which, good). so rather than drawing suspicion by saying “we’ve got to protect everyone connected with this one kid”, they’re making it seem like all the U.A. kids’ families are getting this treatment

but since the heroes are now spread so thin, they can’t just send a protective detail to each and every family, so they’re bringing all of the families to the same place instead to better keep an eye on them

so that’s all well and good, and a very smart move. except that idk how all of this is going to go over with the general public, all of whom are probably feeling unsafe at the moment, and who will probably see this as preferential treatment -- basically just the heroes looking after their own and leaving everyone else to fend for themselves

(ETA: okay so @hanashimas’ translation clarifies that U.A. is offering their services as an evacuation shelter for everyone who wants it, not just the families of the U.A. students. that’s much more appropriate so I withdraw my previous “wtf” reaction lol.)
