The First Cut Is the Deepest
The project is officially underway!
Last week, Jack and I took the template I got from Almond Surfboards and cut the board down to size. There's not much to chronicle from this session just because all we did was cut the board...and drink a few beers...
Some lessons were learned though -
Fiberglass is pretty difficult to saw through. Luckily we used hand saws, so there weren't any massive mistakes that definitely would have happened if we had been trying to work too fast with power tools.
Painter's tape is a must. We were able to score the fiberglass pretty easily and symetrically thanks to taping the template down along the stringer.
Positioning the template is key. Finding the right spot to set the template is going to make the process of reshaping the rocker on the board much easier. We were also able to cut off most of the damaged portion of the board becuase we put the template closer to the existing nose.
Finding a good location to shape the foam is going to be a necessity. Just the little bit of foam dust that we managed to create with the sawing was annoying enough to help us realize that we need to do the sanding/planing somewhere other than my garage.
More to come as we advance through the project, but for now I'm working out a plan to *hopefully* utilize a shaping bay at a local surf shop.
Oh, and we have a name now - Altar

So I wanted to set this up as a separate blog because it’s going to be dedicated to posts about the process of me reshaping a surfboard.
Here’s the backstory -
I had a coworker ask me at the beginning of the school year if I would want an old surfboard that she had bought for her sons several years ago. They’ve graduated and moved out now so she was going to get rid of it but wanted to offer it to me before putting it out with the trash. Needless to say I eagerly accepted a free board. The thing was beat up! The pics below are after I cleaned all the gross old wax off of it.
As it turned out, the board was the exact same length as my other longboard. My first though was that I could patch it and then give it to a friend so we could go surf together more often. After looking into what it would require just to patch and clean it up so it would be rideable, we decided to change the game plan.
We are going to turn this 9’1” 3 fin longboard into a 6’ twin fin fish.
I found a free template online (props to Almond Surfboards for that one) and have been slowly getting stuff together to start the project.
This blog is where I’m going to chronicle the process. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll end up being a surfboard shaper lol. Wish us luck!!
