While the turtles are staying with April in season one, she has a somewhat hard time keeping food in the fridge. Four mutant turtle teens are no joke as far as appetite is concerned, and the novelty of having 100% new and fresh foods in the fridge at all times is not lost on them. They have to be encouraged a couple times to help themselves, and when they finally do it's like an apocalypse on her fridge.

She also enjoys introducing them to new things during this time. She brings home one of those TUBS of pillsbury cookie dough to make them fresh chocolate chip cookies. Before they're in the oven, Mikey finds her and she lets him have some of the dough.

And then Donnie comes into the kitchen and freezes when he sees them. He looks at the dough. He looks at Mikey. He looks at April.

"Did you let Mikey have chocolate?"

April looks at him. Looks at Mikey. "...Yes?"

Don FREAKS out and smacks the spoon out of Mikey's hand. "We can't have chocolate, we're severely allergic!"

April PANICS. "What?? I didn't know, I'm so sorry!"

"What do you mean you didn't know?" Don asks, clutching his baby brother to his chest like he's about to perish. Mikey looks confused. "You wouldn't give chocolate to a dog, would you?"

April's freaking out escalates. Dogs aren't supposed to have chocolate! She knows that much. "What do I do? Should we—uh—go to the ER?"

"Are you insane?" Don has Mikey practically in a headlock and Mikey is—crying? Choking? "We need a VET, April!"

Splinter, whose dad-sense is tingling so hard that his fur is standing on end, enters the kitchen ominously. "Boys. I hope you're behaving and being kind to our host."

April is like, five seconds away from just dying of sheer embarrassment and worry. She looks at Splinter with huge eyes, about to admit she's POISONED his son, and then Don dissolves into giggles.

She stares at him, open mouthed in shock. He releases Mikey, who as it turns out, is also giggling. The chokehold was doing little to suppress it. Splinter puts his head in his hand.

"I'm just kidding April. We eat chocolate just fine."

She has to take another long moment to process the shock and calm her heart down. Don's laughing so hard he's tearing up.

April has never had little siblings before. She used to wonder what it would be like, and there was a time in her life where she had even wanted a little brother or sister to tease and love.

She did not know the true nature of little siblings. Which is evil, naturally.

She chases Don out of the kitchen with the biggest wooden spoon she has, and Splinter HOPES she catches him.

Insane theory, but hear me out: Mutant Mayhem! Shredder being insanely strong during the sequel, perhaps even a bit overpowered, none of the turtles know how to beat him and least of all have no idea how this human is so much more powerful than them! It made sense with Superfly, but that's because he was a mutant.

So how was he so much stronger than them? Plot twist in the middle of the film! It gets revealed that Shredder is a mutant like them! It explains everything. The inhuman strength. it probably should've been obvious from the start. Maybe a different kind of mutant (it's been stated that none of the mutants were humans from the start, but what if Shredder was the only one that was part human part mutant? Concept from my friend @nosleep83)

I don't know. I got the idea when I remembered how Cynthia wanted to create stronger, warrior mutants from the turtles' blood, and thought HOLY SHIT. I just think this would make Shredder a really interesting character. Otherwise The Shredder, a whole ass guy with a clan to manage for, got called up by Cynthia to beat up some kids and said k lol i'll be there soon.

They call me The Shredder because I was experimented on and made into a murder weapon to shred children. Or whatever. Watch me be wrong about everything.

I think the main thing differentiating mirage/2003 Donnie from rise Donnie is that fact that they’re on opposite sides of the empathy scale.

Donnie in mirage and 2003 was the black sheep, he was quiet and didn’t like to fight, and lagged behind his brothers in physical combat, but more than made up for it with his intellect, and displayed a fascinating affinity for battle strategy.

He’s closest with April, Most of the turtles allies in 2003 came from him aggressively helping people at all physical or emotional costs, he scales his worth by his ability to succeed in this. His closest friendships were with April and Leatherhead, Leatherhead being an opportunity to work with another scientist, and April, a human the turtles met by saving, is calm and levelheaded, making the two compatible, yet we never see him confiding in either of them, or anyone else. He doesn’t take much interest in family drama and finds it boring and repetitive. In early mirage chapters he was second in command (which I’ve only ever seen slightly represented in 2007, do better people) and keeps mostly to himself, in both mirage and 03 his siblings had a hard time relating to him or understanding his interests, nor did he (specifically in mirage) understand their love for violence.

He was incredibly intelligent and became an expert in everything that interested him, in 03, which I will be soley referring to for the rest of this paragraph unless explicitly stated otherwise, this included technical engineering, mechanics, scifi, genetics, palaeontology, first aid, math, biology, physics, ecology, astronomy, chemistry, coding, mystical arts and so so so much more, a large amount of his inventions were for the sake of helping or pleasing his family, as it was seemingly the only way he knew how to connect with them and show his love. In mirage when the turtles got stuck in northhampton, don spent days and nights fixing a boiler to give his family hot water. His favourite movie was the matrix, so take what you will from that. He could be sarcastic and liked to tease his brothers but always remained light hearted. In good genes part 1, Leatherhead describes him as so, “My friend Donatello is one of the gentlest souls I've ever met, with one of the finest minds I've ever known.” Raphael, who was seen constantly fighting both Leo and Mikey, rarely had any conflict with Donnie, the two kept a close bond and Raph even went as far as to comfort him in times of need. He didn’t like to spend time around casey (remember that time in mirage when Casey poked him with a stick until don pushed him into a ravine?) and was sometimes drained by mikey, so he was aware of his intelligence and was annoyed by a lack of it. the only time we see him snap is when he hasn’t slept in days as he’s been trying to find out how to help the people trapped in the underground city, showing his stubbornness.

Interestingly he has a deep, spiritual bond with his father, though we rarely see the two talk, they seem to be able to sense each other, we see this when Donnie is brainswiped and to a degree when he double mutates. In the beginning of the space arc, don jumps in front of a bullet to save his father, and in identity crisis, we see a flashback of splinter reading to him as a child.

Most importantly, he had an unmatched level of responsibility, similar to Leo’s, in same as it never was, we see a future where Donnie has disappeared, and the entire world is in shambles, splinter is dead (shocking I know) and the turtles hate each other, when our Donnie was transported to this future, he immediately started fixing things, he fixed the draft between Leo and Raph, and arranged a plan to kill the shredder, he succeeded (with a drill btw), but watched his entire family die in front of him, after this episode he was never the same, he internalized the idea that if he’s not good enough everyone he loves will pay for it. In the dream episode where their layer is overtaken, we see him blame himself for not knowing their phones were traceable, and seems nearly horrified, in return to the sewers, after splinter gets cancelled on twitter, he goes tunnel visioned, obsessively collecting pieces, obsessively attempting to prevent sainw.

Rise Donnie is Also the black sheep, he’s not quiet and he loves to fight, though at the beginning of the show he mostly relies on his tech. His siblings don’t understand him, and he’s closest with April. Most of his social interactions are for the sake of sharing his knowledge and gaining praise, which he bases his worth upon, but seems to prefer that this come from someone he already knows well. He only really connects with his family through tech, and never plainly states his emotions or desire for validation, disguising it as ego. He has no push in decision making, satisfied with a supporting role. He believes he is always right and can get quite upset with those he perceives as wrong. His expertise mostly remains in things tech related, which he uses to fix any problems he notices, again in search of appreciation. He is chaotic and unrelenting, not always stopping to consider how his reactions will be perceived by others, and fills the mad scientist archetype to a T. He is insecure and lashes out when he feels his intelligence is being challenged. Once he gets started on something, sometimes a project, sometimes an episode of anger, he won’t stop until he is satisfied, as seen when the episode where he builds Sheldon. Most of his problems stem from issues with his father, he feels under appreciated and thus unloved, splinter doesn’t often acknowledge him fully, and we almost never see them properly bonding. He thinks no one could ever love him for his personality so tries to compensate with accomplishments. He loves his family wants them to be safe and proud of him, but struggles to connect with them, and mainly bonds with them through mutual interests, rather than deep emotional understanding. Regardless of a lack of communication, his siblings are aware that he cares about them in his own way, and don’t pressure him into conformity.

Rise didn’t really change any of the characters, it just highlighted certain traits while scaling back others.
