what's something you would want to see in an animated adaptation of the underland chronicles?
Oh BOY where to begin?
These are going to be in no particular order...
Each trailer should have the prophecy read out in a dramatic voice. The trailer for the first one will go "And eight will be left when we count up the dead" and then a quick montage of some pretty scary shit happening but the cuts are too fast to see what's actually happening. The only exception to this is the marks of secret where the fact that the song is a prophecy is a reveal (however the song plays in full in the trailer, it's just structured different from the others)
The animation should be a little edgy. Give things hard angles, stay away from the bulbous smooth (Modern) Disney look.
Really go nuts with the bat designs. Embrace the warrior cats OC-ness of it. Let all the background bats be just as vibrant and wacky as the main cast.
Everyone's bond should sorta look like them, kinda the way that dogs kinda look like their owners. Solovet's bond should look like a total villain. Euripides should look like Vikus. I mean, Aurora's got that gold thing going on which Luxa also has with the crown. The bonds gotta look like they belong together spiritually.
The nibblers need to have more of a role before the marks of secret. Have them in the background of other shots, have them actually get lines in the jungle, see if they can be more present at the council discussing the plague, write some new scenes for them, etc. I wouldn't even be against them inventing a new nibbler character and putting them on one of the earlier quests. The audience should already know and care about them before we see them being horribly brutalized in a reenactment of a real world genocide.
Ares, and all the other bats for that matter, need to have very expressive eyes. They don't always get a lot of lines so they should still have a way to have visible presence in the scene's that they're in.
Every time the bats do that thing where they detect rats and their ears shoot up it should play a musical sting
All the underland creatures/factions should have their own leitmotif. Ripred's lieitmotif should be this uncanny blending of both the rat's theme but also with hints of the Regalians and Gregor's. After Gregor think's that boots has died in the labyrinth there should be this super dramatic and gutwrenching theme, and then all the music just stops for the rest of the movie until they reunite and then the music can come back. The most you get is like a minimalist drum and base sequence, but nothing properly melodic until we know that boots is safe.
The sequence Gregor escaping with Ares and Pearlpelt from the labyrinth should be all in one take.
Every time Gregor slips into the Rager state it should be accompanied by a recognizable sound effect sting and have it's own sound effect and muscial sting. Something like glass shattering mixed with reverb and pitch shifted down. Rager sequences should be in first person and show just how much he's dissociated from the violence he's doing. The audience just sees that split vision with all the weak points highlighted and one by one they get crossed out.
I hope they cast someone appropriately nasally to play Ripred, I think he should be a little high pitched and scrungly. However, I would make an exception if they somehow got Kieth David to voice him. I would be very unsatisfied if they cast Ryan Reynolds
I hope they cast someone with a deep voice to play Ares. He needs to be big and imposing and scary. He needs to be like the big kid at the playground. The fact that there's a more pained sensitive side to him needs to be a revelation. He needs to be a bit monstrous so you can understand why everyone sees him that way, and why he's dying not to be seen that way but has basically given up and accepted how the world sees him. I would be very Unsatisfied if they cast Ryan Reynolds. It would be fucking hilarious if they cast Chris Pratt... I would hate it but it would probably work and that makes me very mad.
I don't really care how Gregor is cast. Caleb McLaughlin would be a perfect Gregor, but he's all grown up now. He could probably still voice him but it wouldn't be the same. I do not care so long as it's not Ryan Reynolds.
Please don't have anyone call Gregor "Greg"... that just feels wrong. Well maybe Ripred would do it specifically to piss him off.
Henry needs to have a dumb haircut, like... it has to be stupid and ostentatious.
The audience should get to see Ripred from close to Gregor's perspective often. Have the camera right over his shoulder and tilted up to see just how tall this beast is.
Let us see more of the happy times that are alluded to at the start of the marks of secret. Even if it's just a montage, let us see them being normal. Let us see Gregor and Ares play that ball game and see the kids just hanging out. Please 😭
Make Gregor more talkative. There's great moments of internal monologue that could be lost in a screen adaptation, let him talk to Ares or Luxa or even temp about it.
In the code of claw Ares should go with him to the prophecy room to learn that he's going to die. Gregor should tell him about the stone knight and it can be something they share. You can even set it up with them doing the bond handshake there while laying on the floor so that it's a visual callback later (Fuck, I just thought of that and now I'm destroyed again).
I mentioned this in another post, but I think it would be cool to have Gregor get a walkman or other battery powered music player from the museum. They can have a few tunes to bond over, but eventually they have to take the batteries out to put them into flashlights.
A huge missed opportunity in the books is how basically every single human in the Underland we see is royalty or part of the military. I think it would be cool to let us see a bit more of how the regular people live. Maybe have one or two characters who aren't royal or soldiers.
Earlier entries should try to cut away from the violence, simply showing the character's reactions to the horrible things happening around them. Later entries should stop hiding it, paralleling the loss of innocence of the characters. By the code of claw Gregor and Ares, or at the very least Ripred, should be allowed to swear. There's no way you're getting that story on screen without at least a PG 13 rating, and these people just witnessed a genocide and are about to kill a bunch of people in a war. Gregor can say "Holy shit" instead of "aww Jeez" at least once. I also just think "What's your plaaaaaaan" is great but "What's your fucking plan?" lands pretty hard as well.
Don't make the underland too visible. Don't add global illumination. Let there be darkness, let there be long shadows, let us only barely see distant things. When Gregor finally gets echolocation then make the distant things visible through a strange shader... but cut out the bit where he can echolocate heat that makes no sense.
Ms. Cormaci needs to sound exactly like how she did in the audiobook, this isn't up for debate.
When the Bane calls Gregor and Ares to battle it needs to be one of the most disturbing, blood chilling things the audience has ever heard. It needs to be loud, and painful, and monstrous. You gotta see that the pup we all loved and coddled has fully lost it and become this fascist ball of hatred and murder and violence. It should cut through the audience's core and silence everything else in the scene. Just have it hold there after he's shouted, showing them locking eyes on each-other and cutting back in between the two. Yes, the Bane has completely been subsumed as a symbol of his side, but so has Gregor. He's in the black armor, he's the figurehead as well. There are parallels, y'all.
Let the Shiners be at least 20% less awful. They're funny, but let them have their hero moment where they're redeemed in the marks of secret rather than saving it for the end of code of claw.
Old Hamnet in the flashbacks to the flooding of the garden should be hot. Flashback Ripred who was there is of course also hot. He remains so in the present as well.
The narrative that Gregor is told in the first book, that the natives just let Sandwitch have the Underland because they weren't really using it... it's heavily implied that's a lie, especially after we learn about the Diggers and how they were genocided and basically expunged from history. I think there should be a direct callback to it, make this implication an explicit part of the story.
Give my girl Aurora some more lines. She goes on all these adventures and never gets to be more than "Luxa's bat".
Oh no I hit character limit for this post... uh... I have a lot of thoughts and I probably will have more in the future 😅. Probably way more than you asked for but you opened the floodgates and this was the result.

Like it's rare but it happens a couple times and the first time he does it is probably on the first quest trying to impress Gregor/get them to like him and Gregor just. Doesn't get it. Cause he doesn't know D&D. And Ripred is so dissapointed.

you know what. tuc deserves a musical adaptation like lightning thief got. like i wanna see gregor open with an i want song, a regalia establishing number, a boots-and-the-cockroaches number, luxa gets a number as we get to know her, ripred gets the song that gets a million hits on youtube, henry gets an evil reprise of a previous number (probably with him and luxa), gorger gets a villain song, ares reprises maybe gregor's number??? and everyone has their own leitmotif and all the creatures would be puppets and it'd fuck so hard

I need more people to read those books, damn it!!!! I grew up on those bad boys! I read them as they were releasing! When everyone lost their shit over The Hunger Games books I was like, hey, go read her other books, too!!!! The Underland Chronicles are so fucking good, damn it! AAAAAAAAAA----
Ahem.
I love them. I don't believe that every book needs a film adaptation, but I do believe that TUC deserves an animated television series adaptation. Suzanne Collins got her start writing for TV, and that absolutely translates into her prose. The way it's paced would make it fucking fantastic as a book-per-season cartoon. NOT live-action, though--I don't think any of the creature characters would translate into CGI very well, and any semblance of "realistic" lighting would be utter hell to watch. Animation with clever use of color tones would be much more effective at selling the underground settings.
That said, just imagining the nightmare of trying to portray some of the events of that series in film form without getting slammed by TV censors...oof. The on-page genocide and the whole "carpet of corpses" scene alone would be brutal. I want to see what a dedicated team could do with it to make it the most heart-wrenching scene in all of children's media. God.
@ whoever makes TV decisions, let me make a TUC animated series, I want it so bad. Fuck. I have a mental cast list already half-made. Give me Wendie Malick as Solovet, Steven Yeun as Gregor, Keston John as Gregor's dad...I know I've had more ideas, but I forget what they are at the moment. Get Mark Hamill in there somewhere, just because I love him. Tara Strong can be Boots. Get Matt Mercer in there as one of the villains, but not Pearlpelt because Pearlpelt is way too pathetic for that. Shit, maybe Matt Mercer as Ripred--not a villain, but that absolute menacing vibe he gets sometimes demands a VA who can pull off sinister and sincere in equal measure.
I have ideas, is what I'm saying here.
Personally, I would list Suzanne Collins' work in The Underland Chronicles to be one of the biggest influences on my writing style. I don't write for children, but the "paced like a television show" style is something I aim for, and the complex politics with infinite depths of nuance that can't be neatly summarized as "good guys vs bad guys" is all over my writing.
Also Ripred is the Most Character Of All Time. Sad Dad Rat Man, my beloved. I want to know more about his army of lobsters.

the other chart sorts the seasons by how i would adapt them. sometimes this is based on content. sometimes it's based on gm style. sometimes, it's just the vibe the season gives off as a whole. without further ado:

these seasons are short enough to fit in a single feature film and not quite long enough for a series. the source material just feels more live action to me, especially because there are other seasons that just feel more animated. keep in mind there will be a practical effect focus. just imagine the balloon elf. cartoon logic, live action movie.
feature film (animated):

pirates of leviathan
mice & murder
mentopolis
burrow's end
a bunch of these are the little guy seasons. you can't tell me you wouldn't want a heist movie with characters voiced by the mcelroys, jess ross, and lily du. pol is a spinoff movie of the fantasy high series.
tv series (live action):
the unsleeping city
the unsleeping city (chapter 2)
a starstruck odyssey
a court of fey and flowers
these are long enough to be series with some depth. tuc is on here because it feels like a superhero series. they're teaming up to save new york, but also really finding the humanity in each other. the funny reason is because finding someone to play ricky matsui is hilarious. also i want to see a kugrash puppet.
aso is on here because it's space opera and watch the gunner channel be bozos in live action? hilarious. i've seen some animatics that are incredible though, so this season could go either way.
acofaf is here because i'd want to see the costume department go ham. bridgerton but fairies? guess what. diverse actors, tons of practical effects, a little raunchy, a little heartbreak, what more could you want.
tv series (animated):
fantasy high

the seven (miniseries)
a crown of candy
the ravening war (miniseries)
neverafter
as stated earlier fantasy high is a running animated series with two current spinoffs: one movie (pol) and one miniseries (t7). combination high school slice of life with action/adventure.
acoc is a game of thrones style series--animated to keep the comedy, with trw functioning as a hotd style prequel series. the calorum seasons could easily read live action though, just like aso could be animated.
neverafter is animated, but the style changes throughout the season. maybe they start live action and become animated when they wake up in the new timeline. no change in world physics, no acknowledgement, just a seamless switch. ooh maybe they shift to traditional animation when they're in the lines between.
video games:
shriek week
coffin run
these come down to gm style and also system. shriek week is already a cryptid dating sim. coffin run is crunchy, a little bit horror with a lot of adventuring options to explore.

*this is in reference to the adventuring academy episode the new mr. peanut, wherein lou wilson creates a snack rating system for brennan lee mulligan based on a scale of 1-5 almonds. exceeding the 1-5, i.e. reaching 6, means you go to the salami scale.

!To the TUC Fan Artists!
Genuine question.
In a world where you were paid to exclusively adapt the first book into a graphic novel/abridged comic like commissioned as a collective to do it.
Besides free time and the will to do so:
What would be the financial amount/or technical support needed– For you to complete that project?
And do you believe you can coordinate with the other TUC fan artists/ artists in general? To complete that? If a definitive style was selected, would other artists with desires to work on the project be willing to for lack of better term "follow suit" with supplementing and working in that art style when pitching panels etc?
Pretend me and Rei are sitting down like Shark Tank Sharks. We have the Capital and the desire to fund it.
We just want to know what you as artists would NEED, as far as resources and physical assistance/collaborative assistance like line artists and colorists, panelists etc. Please feel free to include a Dollar amount, hell even an Amazon Wishlist full of equipment.
At the risk of us sounding like douchebags, were just trying to gauge hyporealithetically what the artits and you all would need to dedicate like full energy into getting that done.

on the topic of what would be the best form of media various d20 seasons would be best adapted into, i think it would be cool if tuc was a mix of two types to represent the duality between the waking/dream worlds .. either a switch between live action and animation or something like this w/ 3d and 2d animation mashed together

Twisted Wonderland Visions (and Delusions) from Genshin Impact
Brace yourselves; I've been thinking this over for ages and I finally settled my thoughts today.
Heartslabyul
Riddle: Geo with Pyro delusion
Gives a restricted by rules/guidelines feeling. Bound by "contracts" in a way. Once the overblot passes, he is less rigid and learns to examine those "rules/contracts" and work around them. Still follows to the letter. Pyro delusion for outbursts of anger and overloading passion.
Ace: Pyro
Chaos child. Need I say more? Has a personality that blazes over others with a disregard for their thoughts/well being at times.
Deuce: Geo
Takes damage as a shield for others. Hard-headed and enduring. Gets along well with most but can also be a bit blockheaded when angered. ...Eggs.
Trey: Hydro
Adaptable and sneaky. Caretaker. Also has the added benefit of being able to brush teeth whenever.
Cater: Electro
Snazzy with bursts/strikes of inspiration. Light with hidden darkness/elements. Can also power his phone for maximum Magicam use.
Savanaclaw
Leona: Electro with Anemo delusion
Prickly, lightning quick reflexes, and incredibly smart. Only prompted to action when a "storm" arises and only appears as long as needed. The delusion stems from feelings of "useless efforts" so he goes at his own pace. Blustering. Follows whims/winds.
Jack: Geo
Dependable, loyal, and sturdy. Can both take and give damage. Also shapeshifter.
Ruggie: Anemo
Quick hands and feet, faster still at talking his way out of trouble. Schemer who also takes care of others.
Octavinelle
Azul: Geo with Hydro delusion
Likes shiny objects like money and is the king of contracts. Hard hitter but slow (as mentioned by the Leech Twins based on his actual form). Shapeshifter. Hydro delusion comes from wanting to erase/erode the past, and attempting to race ahead with wily plans.
Jade: Electro
Likes the subtle shock factor. Smart and knows it. Light and shadow. Split second turn without warning.
Floyd: Hydro
Goes with the flow and moves others at his own pace. Complains non-stop about how "lame" his vision is, but at least he can pair with Jade's and put the "squeeze/shock" to multiple opponents.
Scarabia
Kalim: Dendro
While his signature spell works with Hydro, he helps others thrive and survive. A dreamer at heart who finds a way to bloom in the harshest conditions.
Jamil: Hydro with Pyro delusion
He is a caretaker who doesn't want to be one, but who cannot help his own personality. Adaptable, but sometimes blocked by external forces. Delusion stems from wanting to force a change and "burn bridges" between himself and the boundaries formed over years (like river banks)
Pomefiore
Vil: Cryo with Electro delusion
Calculating and deceptively cold appearance but warm on the inside. A fair judge of all who keeps his passions close. Some say revenge is best "served cold," so don't let his cool demeanor fool you. The determination and drive inside can "bite" as fiercely as any fire can burn. Delusion stems from the desire to be seen through the darkness, even if for a moment. Like thunder follows lightning, he'd like thunderous applause to follow his crowning performance and to finally be recognized.
Epel: Dendro
Has a deep respect for plants and the strength, determination, and endurance in farming/thriving. Quickly angered when others assume all he can create are "pretty flowers."
Rook: Anemo
Whimsical, quick, sharp, and somehow capable of detecting others as if he "hears them on the wind." Schemer who is loyal, and understands that all beings need encouragement and acceptance to both improve and to be loved as they are in the moment.
Ignihyde
Idia: Anemo with Electro delusion
Speaks as soft as the breeze, and is easily swept up in his own world. It's also been said that the wind "brings souls home" in a certain faraway land. Electro delusion comes from wanting to hold onto that brief moment of existence instead of letting go. He also likes to build contraptions and stay tucked away like a certain Archon.
Ortho: Dendro
A cheerful dreamer who makes even the coldest person smile. Unrestrained, and a little naïve about the world/social interactions. Could also be compared to predecessor.
Diasomnia
Malleus: Dendro with Cryo delusion
The passage of time is hard to judge until one looks close, like counting the rings inside a tree. Capable of miracles that technology cannot perform... though he cannot operate the creations of "man." If left untouched by humans, he grows a bit out of hand in terms of his eccentricities and how they can be perceived by others. Cryo delusion stems from wanting the world to remain unchanged, covered by a "blanket of snow" so that the possibility of "uncovering" something new/interesting is always there, even if he does not disturb it to do so. The possibility alone is enough (for the actual reveal may bring him truths and situations he does not wish to address).
Lilia: Pyro
Chaos child. Could likely burn down everything in a 200 mile radius if left in the kitchen. Flares up with passion, yet it seems what fuels the fire beneath may have turned to ash before anyone noticed.
Silver: Hydro
Goes with the flow. Caretaker with a gentle demeanor. Helpful for putting out any fires his fath--Lilia may have started.
Sebek: Geo
Loud. Boisterous. Loyal. Wanted Dendro and so complains very loudly about his element. Will occasionally take pride in saying he can be "his lord's shield," though every student knows Malleus Draconia ends a fight before it starts, no protection needed.

I feel like there was a missed opportunity in the underland chronicles. At some point he should have got like a Walkman from the museum. He could have shared his music with Luxa, and then there would be a heartbreaking moment where they'd have to take the batteries out of the Walkman just to get a few more minutes of light from the flashlights. There's like symbolism and imagery there. Aaaaaaa.
