Providing colour into the autumn Verbena rigida (slender vervain, large-veined verbena) is a low-growing tuberous perennial. It’s not fully hardy and is best grown in well-drained soil to avoid excessive wet conditions. These growing conditions also suit the fine leaved grass Stipa tenuissima (Mexican feather grass) with which it was growing.

The flowers of Anemone pavonina (peacock windflower) come in many shades with deep rose, crimson red, cherry, and salmon pink often with navy-blue eyes, and these colours will fade as the blooms ages. A tuberous perennial with divided basal leaves the plant needs free drainage as a Mediterranean species. This flower has been creating a display for the last month.

In the shade of the jumble of other plants in my front garden the distinctive flowers of Arisaema candidissimum (white-spathed jack in the pulpit, striped cobra lily) have appeared. The flowers of this tuberous perennial are surprisingly sweetly scented. I like the large trifoliate leaves that appear with or after the flower.

The Eranthis hyemalis (winter aconite) are getting going in the borders producing splashes of yellow flowers. This small tuberous perennials has a cup-shaped flower held above a collar of deeply lobed leaves. This cultivar Eranthis hyemalis ‘Euan Bunclark’ (winter aconite) has more deeply divided flowers more like the leaves, and makes a great show in the border. The last two photographs compare the cultivar (left) and the species (right).

The extraordinary flowers of Iris tuberosa (snake's head iris, widow iris, black iris) can go almost unnoticed but they have a sweet scent and make a great cut flower. This tuberous perennial was formerly known by the botanical name Hermodactylus tuberosa.

The plants in front of this wall provided some drama at the garden entrance with their red flowers. They were the Dahlia 'Bishop of Llandaff' and containers of a trailing Begonia.

The large flowerheads of Dahlia 'Penhill Watermelon' provide magnificent bursts of curvy, fresh watermelon-toned petals. This plant is a half-hardy perennial and so the tubers will need to be overwintered in a frost-free place.

These Anemone blanda (Balkan anemone, Grecian windflower, winter windflower) have been flowering for the last three weeks. This spreading, tuberous-rooted perennial is native to southeastern Europe and thrives in the free drainage conditions of my gravel driveway where the plants have seeded. There is a range of the depth of blue in the flowers and this has occurred as the plants have crossed with the white flowered cultivar Anemone blanda ‘White Splendour'.
