Disappointed Asian dads checking their daughter's disaster result on an exam: A story in 4 parts.

Hi, this is a couple of pictures and things I remember from Twoset Violin's Helsinki meet & greet and Q&A on 15th June 2023.

I asked them to sign my music stand bag that I made, and Eddy said "that is one cool bag" and me and Brett commiserated on how flimsy the original bags are. 😁

I wish I had to talked with them more, but I was totally overwhelmed and way too excited to think. The next day I realised I could've actually told them what is obvious to me but I could've told them too: that they influenced me to practice more, which in turn has made me a better singer in my choir, and I could've thanked them for it. *facepalm* Now it probably looked like I was just in it for the autographs, argh. Well, they’ve probably met hundreds of people just as awkward as me, so probably no big harm done.

Eddy’s skin looks actually so good compared to some years ago, I don’t know what his secret is but looking good! They both look the same as on Youtube, but I noticed they sort of look more slender and lightly built in 3D. (I just realised if Brett looked thin and pale on camera when he was ill, how freaking thin was he in real life?? Oh lord. Poor Brett.)

The Q&A was fun but so short, I think I could’ve just sat with them for an hour more. Some of the questions were very huge and all-encompassing like “what is creativity” and so were the answers, so I can’t remember everything, but here is what I do remember!

Brett was marvelling at how light it was in Helsinki even 10:45 pm, and even after that it doesn’t get really dark, like how do you even deal with that (with blackout curtains, Brett) and we were like “yeah we know! 😃” and he was like “haha I’m totally telling on myself”.

Another question was about their first musical memories. Eddy laughed that his memory isn’t the best but perhaps the first music lessons in New Zealand, and Brett told us that his mother would put on classical music to play for him when he was going to sleep. Aww.

Someone asked them about Tiger moms, and Eddy told us that when he was in high school, on a scale of 1-10 his mom was like an 8.2, but now it’s more like 3.8 so she’s mellowed out and she’s ”lovely”. In high school Eddy would’ve wanted to go to a sleepover with friends, and his mom would be like ”No” and when he tried to go like ”But but friends, social life” (this got laughs from the audience) his mom would be like ”what do you need that for, you’re here to study and do well” or something (more laughs). Brett said his mom was something like 5-6 on that scale, but very ”nosy”, always asking where he’s going and with who, and he laughed that she still keeps asking to this day. ”I’m going out – with who – with Eddy – Eddy who – Chen – where’re you going” etc.

Twoset came across as very genuine. Exactly the same in real life as on Youtube, it feels like they are not pretending to be anything, they seem to be very honestly who they are. Maybe they have Youtube personas which they’re wearing as naturally as second skin, but it seems to be a very comfortable fit and not a forced one. They just earnestly want to do their thing and I love that for them! ❤️

I don't want to spoil the concert plot for anyone so I won't be saying much about it, but it's a lot of fun, just you wait, get tickets if you can!

Helsinki exploded with applause, gave them standing ovation and I feel like that night will be one of my best memories for a looong time.

hearing their laughs and seeing their smiles irl is something i will cherish forever. eddy's soft "keep it up" when i told them i started playing piano again because of them will keep me practicing from here on out. still can't believe brett picked me in the q&a and that i got to somewhat torture eddy with the 5mil concerto question much to brett's delight lmao.

the concert was utterly amazing, unforgettable, so much fun, breathtaking and emotional, and yes i cried. i want to forever live in the 6 minutes that is twoset playing navarra.

and london gang was also a huge part of how great the day was!! such wonderful people, had delightful conversations about twoset, classical music, tonic, practice, art, fandom and so much more! they all kept me sane through the surreality of it all. thank you!!

(oh and btw the day before i also went to hilary's concert and i met her??? so fucking surreal, i'm telling you!!!)

lately, i've been keeping away from all things twoset-related so i won't get distracted from some Important Real Life Things, so when i tell you i flew across the room like a looney toons character when i saw this picture, like holy fuck, i was unprepared

  Hugo Marinho Borges Calderano (Current WR: 18)

Hugo Calderano was born on June 22, 1996 in Rio de Janeiro is a table tennis player from Brazil. He is a right handed player with shakehand grip. At the age of 14, he left his hometown to live in São Caetano do Sul and practice with the Brazilian National Team.In 2013, Hugo became the youngest player to ever win a leg of the ITTF World Tour and the first player to win a singles title on the ITTF Junior Circuit and on the ITTF World Tour in the same year.In 2014, he made history by winning the Bronze medal at the Youth Olympic Games in China. It was the first medal for Brazilian table tennis in an Olympic competition.Hugo is three times Latin American champion and the reigning Pan American champion.

  Simon Gauzy (Current WR: 8)

Simon Gauzy  was born on October 25, 1994, is a French table tennis player.Gauzy is clearly the future of French table tennis; he was the youngest ever to join the INSEP (French equivalent of the CNT). His early years coaches and Gatien himself praise him for his dedication and passion. He has such a bright future.

  Patrick Franziska (Current WR: 54)

Patrick Franziska was born on June 11 , 1992 in Bensheim is a right handed German table tennis player.

He made his debut in the club of TSV 1875 Höchst in Höchst im Odenwald . Patrick Franziska won the ITTF Russian Open – 21 years old in 2012, the ITTF Qatar Open – 21 years old in 2013, and the ITTF German Open in double seniors in 2013 with Timo Boll . He won the grand finale Pro-tour of -21 years in 2012. He is European team champion in 2013, but injured in the 2014 edition . He reached the quarterfinals at the 2015 world championships .

  Fan Zhendong (Current WR: 2)

This name does not need any introduction, he already proved his metal and currently ruling the table tennis world. He is currently ranked no 2 in the world after the Ma Long. He is the biggest threat to the Ma long and always have a neck to neck competition with Ma Long.His medal count is umpteen. He was runner-up in 2017 World Table Tennis Championships and 2015 ITTF LIEBHERR Men’s World Cup. He ended up as winner for many ITTF tour. He was Champion of men’s singles, men’s team, and mixed doubles in 2012 World Junior Table Tennis Championships. It is inevitable that he will be future No 1 in Table Tennis.

  Tomokazu Harimoto (Current WR: 16)

Tomokazu Harimoto was born on  27. June 2003  is a Japanese table tennis player with Chinese descent. In Japan people tagged him with the name  “Monster”( 怪物 kaibutsu ) , He is considered as Talent of the century.

He started playing table tennis at the age of two. He is the youngest player in history to  reach the main round of a World Tour tournament.  Although lost in Indian Open finals but he set a new record and won his first World Tour medal in the Men singles at the age of 13 years. He also participated in the World Cup in 2017  where he defeated the world number 6 Jun Mizutani and reached the quarter-finals where he lost to  Xu Xin . At the China Open, he amazed everyone by beating  Vladimir Samsonov and Kōki Niwa . And with his victory over Timo Boll in finals of the Czech Open 2017, he became the youngest winner of a World Tour individual competition.
