Tesco dairy farmers providing ‘safe haven’ for migrating birds as supermarket lifts milk payments
These species, which fly around 6,000 miles to between Europe and Africa, have seen populations dwindle in recent years due to habitat loss and climate change. The new project aims to provide a ‘safe haven’ for them, boosting on-farm biodiversity.
“We’re installing nest boxes across the farm, focusing on areas where we’ve spotted swifts, swallows and martins before, so they can return to a place that’s familiar,” explained Nina Sigley, who has a herd of 130 cows in Staffordshire.
“We have lots of large hedgerows and corridors dividing our fields where nature can thrive, creating the perfect environment for these protected birds… All three species feed off small insects, so we’re also making changes to enhance biodiversity. This benefits our cows too by creating a more natural environment with lots of trees and hedges offering plenty of shade.”
The TSGD has worked alongside WWF to promote initiatives that support biodiversity and reduce carbon emissions, including providing funding for farmers to plant herbal leys in their cow pastures.
“We want to ensure we’re doing all we can to continue to support our farmers and help make our dairy farms some of the most sustainable in the world. That’s why we’re striving to increase biodiversity through initiatives like the swifts, swallows and house martins project,” Tesco Agriculture Manager Tom Atkins explained.
But will pressured margins hit sustainability efforts?
Collectively, the UK dairy industry is working towards the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. This ambition has been laid out in the UK Dairy Roadmap initiative, which is backed by Dairy UK, the National Farmers Union, and the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board.
Last month, the initiative acknowledged that climate action could be forced to take a backseat in the current climate as farmers grapple with rising production costs.
The Roadmap noted that spiking on-farm expenses ‘can make it difficult to think about anything other than overheads’. “Reducing our carbon footprint might, understandably, be falling down the agenda for many farmers,” the body conceded in a statement.
For its part, Tesco said members of its Sustainable Dairy Group benefits from ‘long-term contracts’ that provide ‘the financial security they need to invest in making their farms more sustainable’.
The supermarket giant has announced that its 500 dairy farmer suppliers will receive a ‘much-needed boost’ when it raises the price it pays for fresh milk at the beginning of next month. Tesco will increase milk payments from 41.59ppl to 46ppl. “It is hoped the rise will help to address the current unprecedented levels of on-farm inflation,” the company said.
However, it would seem that this price increase is somewhat lagging broader pricing trends in UK dairy.
Milk prices across Europe have been forced up by rising on-farm costs for things like energy and fuel as well as constrained milk volumes and an expected dryer, hotter, summer. According to data released by the European Commission, the average farm gate milk prices in April 2022 was 46.0 c/kg, up +5.7% compared to March 2022 and +29% compared to April 2021. The EC said the estimated price for May 2022 is 47.4 c/kg, an increase of +3%.
First Milk recently revealed it is raising the price per litre to 43.45ppl from July 1, and 46.50ppl from August 1, including the member premium. The dairy cooperative cited its own pricing lag issues for the failure to raise prices more quickly. Vice chairman Robert Craig said last week: “We recognise that the rate of increase in our milk price may be slower than some others.”
This month in the UK Arla, for instance, lifted its farmgate milk price for the standard manufacturing litre by 4.49 pence per litre to 47.79 ppl for conventional and 54.34 ppl for organic milk.

i did so good yesterday, only 108 calories!! i had thred black coffees, one w a little oat milk and a peach (and obviou water)!!! i'm really proud of myself i didn't think i could restrict that much but i'm trying again today with a goal of 300 max calories. i plan to not eat until dinner. i woke up this morning with so much less bloating i'm rly excited to reach my first goal weight!!!

I finally did stage my own disappearance at a rival Great Gatsby theme party, going on in a mansion across town from the third Great Gatsby theme party in so many months. Both were large and intimate, both had bathtubs full of diamonds, but only one had a bathtub full of diamonds previously outfitted with an escape hatch by me somewhere after the first Great Gatsby theme party.
I know a bit about being a beautiful little fool, but I also know how to connect a tub drain to a velvet-lined waste pipe that leads to a hired car and a life on the run from my old one.

GD&TĐ - Mỗi trẻ có một tính cách khác nhau, có mối quan tâm khác nhau. Một trăm đứa trẻ thì có cả trăm cách đọc sách cho trẻ. Đọc sách không chỉ xuất phát từ niềm yêu thích của bản thân đứa trẻ mà còn phụ thuộc rất nhiều vào việc hỗ trợ của bố mẹ.
Cho trẻ tiếp xúc với sách từ khi còn rất nhỏ
TS Giáo dục Nguyễn Thụy Anh – Chủ nhiệm CLB Đọc sách cùng con tại buổi tọa đàm “Câu chuyện đọc sách - Bắt đầu từ đâu” cho rằng, đọc sách cũng là một thói quen, nếu cho trẻ tiếp xúc với sách từ khi còn rất nhỏ, trước 1 tuổi hoặc từ 1 tuổi, thì bé chắc chắn sẽ để ý đến sách nhiều hơn.
Khi bé còn quá nhỏ, hãy mua cho bé những cuốn sách bằng vải hoặc bìa cứng để bé có thể giở, xem và gặm! Khi bé đã lớn đến 3, 4 tuổi, bạn hãy làm cho bé một tủ sách riêng. Trẻ con vốn ưa sự sở hữu, bạn hãy gọi đó là Tủ sách của Cún, Tủ sách của Đốm… Chắc chắn bé sẽ hài lòng.
Ngoài các phương pháp kể chuyện - trò chuyện tương tác để giúp trẻ phát triển khẩu ngữ, giao lưu cảm xúc, thu hoạch kiến thức, thu nhận các giá trị tinh thần, điều chỉnh hành vi..., TSGD Nguyễn Thụy Anh đặc biệt nhấn mạnh cách khai thác sách như một công cụ rèn luyện các thao tác tư duy.
TS Nguyễn Thụy Anh giới thiệu các dạng bài tập phát triển tư duy có thể sử dụng trong quá trình đọc sách: Quan sát, so sánh, phân tích, liên tưởng, phản biện, đặt câu hỏi, phân loại, khái quát, ghi nhớ theo chủ đề. Chỉ cần một chút lưu ý, việc ứng dụng các dạng bài tập ấy vào quá trình “đọc sách cùng con” sẽ khiến bố mẹ và con cái có những buổi đọc sách thú vị, hữu ích, hỗ trợ tốt cho việc rèn luyện kỹ năng tự đọc – tự học mà không phụ thuộc vào thời gian. Cả nhà có 5 phút, 10 phút rảnh với nhau hay cả tiếng đồng hồ, cả nửa ngày cùng nhau... đều có thể sử dụng cách này để đọc sách hiệu quả.
Cha mẹ là người truyền cảm hứng
Mỗi trẻ có một tính cách khác nhau, có mối quan tâm khác nhau. Vậy nên dù con thích hay không thích đọc sách thì cha mẹ hãy cứ kiên trì thói quen đó cho con mỗi ngày. Chỉ cần con tập trung một đến ba phút thôi cũng là thành công rồi. Đọc sách không chỉ xuất phát từ niềm yêu thích của bản thân đứa trẻ mà còn phụ thuộc rất nhiều vào việc hỗ trợ của bố mẹ.
Thực tế thời gian các bậc cha mẹ dành cho con đang ngày càng bị thu hẹp dần nhưng làm sao để cha mẹ rời công nghệ ra, dành thời gian đọc sách rồi truyền cảm hứng cho con thật sự rất khó. Để giúp trẻ cảm thấy tự tin, thích thú và khám phá được nhiều điều mới lạ trong cuốn sách, quan trọng là phương pháp làm cho trẻ quen với sách, dạy cho trẻ tiếp cận với sách. Bên cạnh sự đồng hành, trẻ cũng cần được động viên, khen ngợi từ cô giáo cũng như mẹ cha. Đó là động lực thôi thúc trẻ thích sách, có thể khám phá từ sách.
TS Thụy Anh đưa ra một vài gợi ý cách đọc sách hoặc lôi cuốn bé thích sách: Khiến bé thích đọc sách bằng những câu chuyện kể… không cần giở sách: Hãy chọn những mẩu ngắn, không quá dài, dễ gây mệt mỏi cho bé và cố gắng kể một cách sinh động, dùng tất cả những “đạo cụ hỗ trợ” mà bạn có thể có như giọng nói truyền cảm, những ngón tay diễn tả người đi, kiến bò, cho nhân vật đi đi lên tay bé, lên vai bé, trò chuyện với bé - những ngón tay gật đầu chào bé, chạy đi chạy lại sẽ kích thích trí tưởng tượng của bé rất hiệu quả;
Nếu bé thích hát, trong các câu chuyện kể, bạn rất nên cho những đoạn bài hát vào; Nếu bé con yêu thích một nhân vật đặc biệt nào đó, ví dụ như khủng long, một hôm nào đó bạn mua cho bé một cuốn sách và tuyên bố, bạn khủng long gửi quà cho bé đấy; Cho phép bé vẽ vào sách.
Mặc dù điều này có thể sẽ bị lên án là phản giáo dục, rằng phải dạy con giữ gìn sách. Nhưng với bé con rất nhỏ, ban đầu, bạn vẫn có thể cho bé có cảm giác “sở hữu” với cuốn sách bằng cách vẽ thêm vài nét cho nhân vật hay tô thêm những chỗ nào bé thích tô vào. Có thể hoạt động này cũng khiến bé gần gũi với sách hơn...
“Với những bà mẹ đã nỗ lực và cố gắng đọc sách cùng con chắc chắn sẽ thu được thành quả rất ngọt ngào. Có thể con bạn không phải giỏi nhất, không phải xuất sắc nhất nhưng nó sẽ là đứa trẻ hạnh phúc nhất. Mà mục tiêu trong cuộc đời mỗi con người đó là hạnh phúc, như vậy là bạn đã thành công rồi” - TS Thụy Anh chia sẻ.
