The Triassic Cuddle
“The Thrinaxodon was in a torpor and wouldn’t have woken up before it drowned in the rain. The Broomistega was badly injured and dying. Neither of them ever actually knew each other but their last moments are curled up together and immortalized in stone.” -xxx @picckl

the embrace of soil and soul
the way you say soil sounds like soul // the way you say soil you make a poem out of every speck of dirt

Inktober 52 2023 - Week 27 - ‘Cuddle’
What else but a drawing of the so called 'Triassic Cuddle'. A fossil discovered that found a mammal like reptile Thrinaxodon sharing a burrow with an injured amphibian Broomistega (it had broken ribs that appear to be in the process of healing, but not likely caused by the Thrinaxodon).
While it is most likely the Thrinaxodon was in a state of aestivation or torpor (like a very deep sleep - think hibernation) and therefore couldn't evict its new amphibious resident; I think this fossil really hit a chord with some people. It's never a good idea to humanize animal behaviour, but I think we all wish that this was a case of two animals facing a catastrophic extinction event and deciding it was best to ride it out in the safety and warmth that comes in numbers. At least until the rains came.
Unfortunately it would seem it did, and these two were buried in a flood and died. Kept hidden in the earth for 250 million years until we came along and found their short story.

What if soapghost
... just a thought
Also look up "Burrow" on webtoons. It's not technically historically accurate but it's hella cute

Fake fossil, I had a load of limestone effect tile offcuts left over from doing the kitchen floor, so I thought I would paint some fossils on them and maybe put them up for sale when I have space.
This time I thought I would have a go at the famous Thrinaxodon and Broomistega 'Triassic cuddle'. These two unfortunate beasties became fossilised when they crawled into a burrow which became filled with mud during a flood.

Someone should be the thrinaxodon to my broomistega and we make a little burrow and cuddle until we're found and nobody can tell where we start and where we end and what we were to each other

250 million years ago, two unlikely species died together in a burrow during the "Great Dying" mass extinction event.
This year, I made a risograph comic that imagines the story behind the "Triassic Cuddle" fossil.

Thinking about the Triassic Cuddle and not so much about the fossil itself, but about what our reaction to it says about us - how a bunch of us spun a story about how they came together in their final moments for company even though that's likely not what happened.
I love that humanity looked at the two fossilised creatures and some people went "there was comfort here". At the end of the day, we look for love and we hope a creature's last moments 200+ million years ago were not spent alone.
