Attention independent authors (and readers)!!
Hello and greetings from someone who definitely isn’t a bookseller who definitely doesn’t work in a Barnes & Noble bookstore somewhere in the United States. In light of Amazon Prime Day coming up (and the Washington Post article discussing Goodreads), here’s a fun little fact for you:
You can sell your independently published novel through Barnes & Noble too.
What?? you ask. How??
Two links for you:
https://www.barnesandnobleinc.com/publishers-authors/sell-your-book-at-barnes-noble/
https://press.barnesandnoble.com/author-tools-and-tips/bn-press-path-to-publication
Yes, it’s a little harder than Amazon. Yes, you have to talk to someone in a corporate space (I don’t like doing it either). Yes, it might even go wrong.
But why should you do it?
Amazon’s trying to kill physical bookstores.
Those of us in the United States are especially prone to Belo’s Bezo’s maniacal plan to control 80% of the book market by 2025. They do this by selling the books at so low a price that physical stores can’t match. They’ve done this in the past and won. It hurts us, and I’d put my entire TBR in guessing that it’s not helping authors either.
That’s the only reason I can think of to be completely honest. Smarter people can probably come up with better, especially sensible reasons.
I get the apprehension when it comes to Barnes & Noble (again, I definitely don’t work there). I also understand why so many go to Amazon in the first place: it’s made it that much easier for those in marginalized groups and spaces to become actual. fucking. authors. That is the only good thing that’s come from them.
But they don’t give a shit about you. Tell me differently, I dare you.
There are other online places to publish your books (just ignore Amazon on the top there, please) that can and will treat you infinitely better than them.
What about me? I’m a reader?
Two of the online sites I use are Bookshop.org and Thirftbooks.com. There are other sites out there too, just ask around.
Oh, and
support independent bookstores.
If you’ve gotten this far, I’m asking you to think about something:
What would you give to see a physical copy of your book on a shelf--any shelf--at a bookstore?
My degree is in traditional publishing. There’s plenty I don’t know about the independent side of the industry, but there are resources, people even, online that can help you. And in turn, they can help bookstores survive.
Help us fight back against Amazon. Please. And we’ll sell your book for you while you’re at it.
And if you’ve got the patience for it, please spread this around for me.

How to Format a Manuscript for Submission
As a copyeditor, here’s everything I wish my authors knew before submitting their manuscripts to a publishing house.
I work as both a professional and freelance copyeditor. That means, a lot of manuscripts come past my desk and when they do, the format of the manuscript is always different.
As a writer myself, I like to choose my own fonts and formatting style, but when you’re about to submit a finished manuscript to a publishing house, it’s important to get the formatting right.
Every publishing house has its own style guide that dictates how manuscripts should be formatted. This prepares the manuscript to eventually be formatted and designed by designers for publishing.
Before submitting a manuscript try to ask for a copy or a link to the publisher’s style guide so you can format your manuscript according to their standards.
Otherwise, you can follow the basic manuscript formatting rules I’m about to provide in today’s article!

An Author's Non-Ending Series of Rejections

In a world where digital publishing is becoming increasingly dominant, this article on LinkedIn discusses why traditional publishing still holds a unique allure.
Key takeaways:
Credibility and Prestige: Traditional publishing offers a sense of legitimacy and prestige that digital often struggles to match.
Thorough Editing: The rigorous editing process can lead to higher quality, more polished work.
Marketing and Distribution: Traditional publishers often have robust networks that can significantly boost a book’s visibility.
Despite the advantages of digital publishing, traditional routes continue to provide timeless benefits for authors and readers alike.
