Translation Shenanigans: Part 3
Hey everyone, welcome back to BotW translation chaos, except it’s not BotW, it’s TotK! This is a collection of all the different trailers for the game with a side by side French/English translation comparison and analysis via myself and @twist-dg!
Trailer #1:
There’s… no dialogue…
Trailer #2:
Frn!Ganon: Montrez-vous, mes fidèles serviteurs. Mettez le royaume à feu et à sang. Detruiser Hyrule, et quiconque s’allierait à sa cause. Ne laisser aucun survivant!
Which directly translates to: Show yourselves, my faithful servants. Put the kingdom to fire and blood. Destroy Hyrule, and whoever would ally themselves to their cause. Do not leave a single survivor!
Eng!Ganon: Rise, rise my servants. Sweep over Hyrule; eliminate this kingdom and her allies. Leave no survivors!
Analysis:
Frn!Ganon calls his servants faithful, where Eng!Ganon does not.
Frn!Zelda: Mais Link, puissant come il est, je craint que tu ne puisse pas le vaincre.
Which directly translates to: But Link, he is so powerful, I fear that you won’t be able to vanquish him.
Eng!Zelda: …but Link, I am not sure you’ll be able to stop him.
Analysis:
Frn!Zelda mentions Ganon is powerful, Eng!Zelda does not. This line appears to be in the middle of a larger section of dialogue.
Frn!Zelda: Je t’en prie, confie-lui le don que tu possède!
Which directly translates to: I beg you, entrust him with the power you have!
Eng!Zelda: Please… lend him your power!
Analysis:
Frn!Zelda uses informal pronouns, English doesn’t have that differentiation.
Trailer #3:
Frn!Zonai Sage?: Zelda. Il restera ton chevalier, le jeune homme à la lame purificatrice. Si nous échouons, tout reposera sur lui.
Which translates directly to: Zelda. He will remain your knight, the young man with the purifying blade. If we fail, all will rest on him.
Eng!Zonai Sage?: Zelda. We rely on your knight, and that legendary sword he carries. Our last line of defence will be Link.
Frn!Zelda: Link..!
Eng!Zelda: Link..!
Analysis:
Frn!Zonai Sage? mentions the possibility of failing, who the “we” is remains to be seen (them and Zelda, them and the Zonai, them and PAZ?).
Frn!Zelda: Je pense pouvoir vous aidez. En faite, je suis la seule à pourvoir le faire.
Which directly translates to: I believe I am able to help you. In fact, I am the only one who can do this.
Eng!Zelda: I know why I am here. It’s something only I can do!
Analysis:
Frn!Zelda seems more unsure of herself; she says “I believe” where Eng!Zelda says “I know.”
Frn!Ganon: Ouvre grand les yeux. Le véritable roi renaît. Sois témoin de l’avènement de son monde. DreahhHHHHGGG!
Which directly translates to: Open your eyes wide. The true king is reborn. Be witness to the coming of his world. DreahhHHHHGGG!
Eng!Ganon: Do not look away. You witness a king’s revival… and the birth of his new world! NrauRAHGGGGGGGG!
Analysis:
Potential parallel between Frn!Ganon saying “open your eyes wide” and Zelda saying “open your eyes” at the start of BOTW.
Frn!Tulin: Allez Link! On y va!
Which directly translates to: Come on Link! Let’s go!
Eng!Tulin: Okay, let’s go!
Frn!Riju?: Toutefois, tu n’es pas seul justement.
Which translates directly to: Nevertheless, you are not alone
Eng!Riju?: …but, you are not alone.
Analysis:
We have NO CLUE who this is, but it might be Riju (or PAZ???) since she is shown around this time in the trailer and seems to be older. This line appears to be in the middle of a larger dialogue.
Frn!Zelda: Link… tu est notre dernier espoir.
Which directly translates to: Link… you are our last hope.
Eng!Zelda: Link… you are our final hope.
Frn!Zelda: Link… je t’en prie, retrouve moi!
Which directly translates to: Link… I beg of you, find me!
Eng!Zelda: Link… you must find me.
Analysis:
Once again, Frn!Zelda is a bit more dramatic/passionate when she speaks; she has more of a flourish with her words.
Bloopers:
“Gamon”
That’s it, that’s the bloopers.

Hello! Do you have any theories/thoughts about the mystery lady in the totk trailer? I am so so normal about her (and your painting of her made me EVEN MORE normal) and I keep looking up things about her but she doesn’t have a tag so I have to go into the HYLIA tag even though I really don’t think she is Hylia. Also I’ve been reading your loz doc and your takes are totally not occupying my brain at the moment. Sorry, all of that to say that if you have thoughts about the mystery lady I would love to hear them
YES. i am almost completely convinced that she's NOT hylia and is in fact the earlier zelda mentioned in botw. visually analyzing her character, we see a lot more similarities to other ZELDA designs than depictions of hylia (and yes i know there's deliberate overlap, but they do each have distinguishing features which i will get into.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here's my breakdown of specific visual elements associated with hylia vs zelda. hylia portrayals will almost always have a double-layered dress with that specific overskirt drape, long, robelike flowy sleeves, and a deep U neckline. zeldas (when in formal dress) will almost always have that boxy neckline, a circlet-like crown with a gemstone inlaid in the middle, a belt with a large circular buckle/brooch in the middle, and a detached hanging drape over the middle of their skirt. several of the zeldas also have noticeable large earrings, and wind waker zelda specifically has little wing-like accessories on either side of her head.
comparing the shot of the mystery girl from the latest trailer, she seems to have a lot more in common visually speaking with our zeldas than our hylias.
Tumblr media
from a purely character design standpoint, visually this character evokes "zelda" much more than "hylia." she also bears distinct similarities to the image we are shown of the long-dead princess in the botw cutscene:
Tumblr media
notably, the long wavy blonde hair, darker skintone, and sleeveless white dress (again, assuming her dress is the same one we see OUR zelda wearing.)
this is consistent with other clues we've been given about the plot so far--we've seen link clearly wearing an outfit meant to evoke the past hero mentioned in that cutscene, down to the weird stuff going on with his arm:
Tumblr media
so if we know that our link is gonna be taking on some of the appearance of the long-dead hero, i don't think it's too much of a logical leap to assume that the girl who's matching outfits with our zelda is the long-dead princess.
as for WHY she's shown and what her narrative significance is, well. i have theories. i think both she and her respective hero are gonna play a pretty big role in totk. more info here & here if you're interested. but tldr that's why i think she's a zelda and not hylia lol

Idk if it's a coincidence or foreshadowing, but it looks like the Goron chief knew that Zelda was in the sky in dragon form before we arrive at the village!
I can only give the example of the french version, but when Yunobo talks about the mysterious lady who gave him red rock food, the others go "could it be Zelda?" and the chief says "Well, with her gold mane, Zelda is impossible to miss"
And a kid replies "Gold mane? You mean blond hair?" and the chief goes oh yeah that's right
Since the whole plot of TOTK is a time loop with paradoxes I feel like this can't be just a dialog joke. The chief knew who the dragon was and said 'Well Zelda is up there, how can you not see her?'

Pondering a Legend of Zelda TotK fanfic.
Firstly: I have nothing against Zelink. I think it is almost always top ship (Twilight is an exception)
TotK Zelink just gives me the biggest QPR vibes ever. They are deeply bonded, deeply committed, deeply in love, and not a single bit of it is actually romantic love. They had half a decade or so between BotW and TotK to develop their relationship, and they did, just not rantically.
I think it's kind of cool actually, mixes things up.
However it does leave open the idea of *other* ships!
Now my playthrough took a fin turn. I have always liked Gerudo town. Home of Ganon, cool look, big stabby ladies, it's a treat. So as soon as plot let me off the leash I went right there to see what was up.
My being under 'leveled' made the journey feel all the more adventuresome. It hadn't clicked howich time had passed. I expected little rambunctious Riju, a little sister full of fire and will. I got a sharp, level headed leader who stared me in the eyes.
The Wind Temple was fun, and I expected lile in BotW for that to be the end, but again I was wrong. Riju sent her avatar with me, a spirit-companion on my journey, cool.
This is where again my play choices impacted my experience. *Now* I explored. Now I wandered across Hyrule, not alone but with a companion running alongside me in my quest. She didn't talk, but neither does Link really, and most of TotK is spent in solitude, or would have been.
Riju was a great asset in combat, and her lighting came in handy many other ways. Rocks to break? Lightning arrow. Pitch black darkness? Activate her lightning corona and the way is lit for you. And there were just the times running along, seeing her running alongside and knowing link was not alone.
Riju became integral to my combat approach as I explored -I was still lacking in shrines- so much so that by the time I visited the other sages, it wasn't just Link gaining new companions, it was new companions joining *us*. Around my house Riju became known jokingly as 'Gerudo girlfriend.'
But as it became clear Zelda's interest in Link(and his in her) was not the standard shipping, the thought of 'why not?' Grew.
A fun headcanon tangent: Either Gerudo continue to grow well into adulthood, or Riju is a very short Gerudo. She's of 'standard' adulthood age, yet nowhere near the height of her fellows.
Why? Well, she met Link. Link, the strongest most capable warrior in all of Hyrule. Why bother getting any taller?
So all that as prelude to: writing Rilink? A Liju? A whatever fic, somewhat based on this idea.
Open up right after link leaves with the sage-avatar. At this point Riju might have a light crush on link(who doesn't?) but mostly it is just a great respect. Then one night she dreams. She dreams of running with Link, fighting alongside link, traveling with him, a wealth of experience in a night, but she is largely a passenger in the experience. Able to watch, but not influence events. This comes to a head when she sees Link gravely wounded by her side and cannot aid him. She wakes, and was it all a dream?
The powers of the sages are mysterious and the intricacies lost to time, no one can provide answers. However when next she sleeps she sees Link again, alive, bandages, but clearly wounded.
This kicks off a sequence lf her trying to push this vision/connection, slowly becoming able to influence her 'dreams' until she can speak, and at least, hold an exhausted and battered Link as he slumbers, slumped across her lap under the night sky in Necluda as rain fizzles off her lightning canopy above their heads.
The ship strikes me as fun because it in no way messes with the main arrangement of Link and Zelda. Riju has to remain in Gerudo town most of the time. She's not going to try tying Link down either. She respects Zelda and the bond between Knight and Queen too much. She will enjoy the time she can have with Link, both solid and via avatar. She will continue to rule her people. It will also be very convenient when the Chief does not need to go on a quest to find herself a voe.
So yeah, just brainstorming this out here.

There is no Fi, there is no Ghirahim, AND THERE IS NO QUEEN OF ENGLAND HYLIA/DEMISE

and now... the moment y'all have been waiting for...
A Tears of the Kingdom trailer breakdown!
Heeeey everyone! For once I'm actually gonna make a trailer breakdown for Tears of the Kingdom! When I saw the trailer, I just couldn't ignore all the details in it! Anyways, with that being said, let's hop to it!
While Link is skydiving (40 sec mark), we can see crop circle-like markings on the ground in the top left and top right corners of the screen. Top left looks like a dragon and top right looks like a teardrop. Perhaps these are mazes like the ones in BotW. Or maybe they're something greater than those labybrinths...
A few seconds later, we see some pillars of light on the ground with a tower of sorts in the middle of the light source. Maybe these are supposed to be the replacement for Sheika towers.
Looks like Hateno Village got a bit of a glow up! I wonder what new stores will be introduced...
And it looks like after BotW all the malice surrounding Hyrule Castle dissapeared and it's safe for people to go over there again! But... one question: why would they go back when Hyrule Castle is gone and Ganon's back? Whatever. It's good to see life coming back to Hyrule.
At the minute and two seconds mark we get our first look at what appears to be the Zonai shrines! If that's the case, they look awesome!
Hyrule Castle has been relocated to what looks like the Gerudo Desert. Maybe the castle relocates whenever you move to an importaint location in the story (on the surface).
New Death Mountain areas! Finally, an actual reson to go there besides for the shrines and Goron Town (I'm so sorry!)
We get a shot of a mysterious flying ship at the minute and a half mark. Dunno what else to say about this other than that the ship looks sick as hell.
Shots of what appear to be either full blown dungeons or just shrines (and it looks we can get a skydiving suit, too! I wonder how...)
At the minute and forty second mark we get a shot of a new character that may be of importaint significance in the story. Suprisingly, this being is the same one that we see in the mural from a few trailers ago! Perhaps this is Hylia herself?
Around the minute fifty second mark we see the throne room of Hyrule Castle back to normal... or so it looks like...
5 seconds later we get the big reveal: Zelda's still alive after that big ass fall we've seen in the past few trailers!
Some unknown character talks about Link being the final hope of Hyrule (or something like that). Who this character might be? I'll leave that to your imagination.
Some Death Star-lookin' object can be seen on screen. Dunno what else to say besides that.
We see Link with some of the decendants of the Champions (Yunobo and Teba's child?) (this isn't the only time the Champion decendants are shown!)
Two minutes and thirty four seconds in we see what looks like the second most amazing thing in the trailer (besides lore): mech battles are real! Woooo baby!
Eldritch demon looking spider/crab thing. Most likely a boss.
Looks like Zelda's holding a Nayru Tear from Skyward Sword... funny... goddess tears in TotK *flashbacks to silent realm Lanayru Desert intensify*
Three minutes in we see malice take over Link's arm. I have nothing else to say about that exept that.
3 seconds later we see Ganon back in the flesh and not looking like a demon spawn from hell or a husky boi from the past few trailers!
6 seconds after that last point I made we see some lady that has almost the same outfit Zelda wears in TotK. She might be of some importance in the story. As for her identity, it remails a mystery.
Riju makes a comeback!!!
Some battle-ready villagers standing alongside Link. Nothing more, nothing less.
Sidon makes a comeback!!!
Speaking of that scene in particular...
Tumblr media
Potential multiplayer reveal???
Anyways, moving on.
The Champion decendants help Link fight a hydra-lookin' dragon
And finally, looks like Zelda's in some different area of Hyrule. Or somewhere else...
And that's all I have! If y'all find something else, feel free to add on in the notes (comment or reply, I don't care)!

Journal
BTF TotK prompt #2
Prompt List
This oneshot is based on trailers officially released by Nintendo. I have looked at no leaked copies, nor have I looked at the leaked art book.
Without the Sheikah Slate, Zelda had continued the compendium in one of three journals she frequented. One of them, which Link was far too afraid to touch, was similar to her diary of a hundred years prior, composed of entries of a more personal nature. The other was scribbles of observations, things she put together for the far neater compendium. For each page, she drew a square for Link to sketch his drawing of whatever her new finding was, in that square and only in that square.
It seemed controlling, but Link understood. This was to be a database for generations to come. There was no room for error when it came to scientific fact.
By the end of their first year in Hateno, Zelda had three new entries, the Eastern Oxen, the Short-Haired Cat, and the Hylian Loach (all of which were beyond exciting since she figured that Link not seeing them in his adventures meant they had gone extinct during the Calamity).
Zelda was meticulously drawing another box for Link on the night they decided to go to the caves.
The new entry was a Ladybug, and Zelda was uncharacteristically silent when she handed him the journal, the pencil, and the caught red bug with black polka dots. Link had only drawn one arc of the first wing before he said something.
“I’m sorry,” he said without moving his head, his eyes fixated on the charcoal created by the pencil. Zelda had one foot on the stairs when she froze, only slowly bowing her head.
“I shouldn’t have…” Link stopped himself, hesitating. She knew what he had said earlier, there was no sense in repeating it.
Earlier that day, they had gotten into an argument. Zelda spoke again about her dreams, the malice, the dark skies, the mysterious figure with blonde hair and painted tears on her face, the sight of Link falling into an unknown abyss. Link loudly told her to stop. He was fed up. He didn’t want to hear anymore. He didn’t want to think that this peace they had found in Hateno was temporary, and he took it out on her. The words “I’m scared” came out as:
“They’re just dreams, Zelda!”
Those words were loud enough to echo between them throughout the rest of the day. Now, the night old and restless crickets chirping outside, Link put down the pencil and looked over at her.
“I shouldn’t have,” he repeated, far more sure. “I’m sorry.”
The apology finally erased his prior words, and Zelda reveled in it, taking a deep breath.
“You think I’m crazy, don’t you?”
Link stood up quickly.
“No, I…” he began. “Zelda, that’s…”
He hugged his arms close and sighed.
“I’m scared,” he said. “Because I wish you were.”
Zelda looked over, it looked as if she was going to be mad, until her expression softened. She looked away.
“I wish I was too.”
They stayed up by the warm of the candlelight talking about their next steps, they drafted letters to King Dorephan and Chieftain Riju, to Boss Bludo and Chief Kaneli, to Lady Impa and the infamous Rumor Mill “journalist” Traysi to get the word around that danger was yet again on the horizon. They counted out their rupees for what supplies they might need, how they might catch one of these Eastern Oxen, and they debated which Hateno residents might take care of their horses while they were away.
They decided they would leave at dawn the day after tomorrow.
Link had his own journal, similar to Zelda’s, filled with personal musings. He started it after the Calamity was defeated and, by now, the leather-bound book was almost full. The last entry in it was written with the help of the moonlight, Zelda sleeping beside where Link sat on the bed.
Tomorrow we make our final preparations to venture into the unknown of Zelda’s dreams. I’ve tried to deny its inevitability, but it was foolish. In fact, I should feel ashamed of my comfort here in Hateno. As the hero, I should be glad I got the year that I did, and that my neglect of the rising dangers in Hyrule didn’t cost any lives thus far.
And Zelda…goddesses I hope that my heart can grow a coat of steel on this journey, for Hyrule’s sake. Our love saved Hyrule once, but if I lose my head, could our love doom it?
Even now I feel my selfishness eroding at my heroism, I wonder if she would have said “yes” to my proposal, and I get giddy in the mist of fantasy.
Link stopped to massage his hand, letting his thumb rub and press and swirl as he looked across the room at Zelda’s desk.
Her journal sat there, and it had the answer to the question he was asking himself. He let his eyebrows knit as he considered doing something that would make him dreadfully unworthy of her.
He decided markedly against it.
Hyrule is doomed.
