Nikko - Toshogu Shrine
Torii at entrance
Five-storied pagoda
Wood carving: „see no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil“ monkeys.
The proverb and the image are often used to refer to a lack of moral responsibility on the part of people who refuse to recognize impropriety, looking the other way or feigning ignorance.
Yomeimon gate
Udaijin (young warrior on the left) - Sadaijin (old warrior on the right) at entry of Yomeimon gate:
With these two figures, if you look closely you will note that Udaijin has his mouth closed, while Sadaijin has his mouth open. The open and closed mouths symbolize the first breath in and the last breath out, the cycle of birth and death.

Tokugawa Ieyasu
Comment: Toshogu Shrine is a magnificent memorial to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868. Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined at Toshogu as the deity „Tosho Daigongen“ - the "Great Deity of the East Shining Light". Initially a relatively simple mausoleum around his tomb, Toshogu was enlarged into the spectacular complex seen today by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu during the first half of the 17th century.

Nikko Toshogu Shrine Autumn Festival
October 16th — October 17th
The Autumn Festival at Nikko Toshogu Shrine is held every year in honour of the Tokugawa clan, under whose 260-year rule Japan’s culture flourished. The festival starts with a ceremony at 10am on the first day, followed by a display of Yabusame (horseback archery) held from 1pm. But it is the procession of 1,000 samurai (百物揃千人武者行列, Hyakumonozoroi Sennin Musha Gyōretsu) held from 11am on the final for which the festival is most famous. Here, over 1,200 attendants divided into 53 categories parade escort portable shrines to the Otabi-sho (Sojourn Hall), a resting point for a shrine during a procession, before returning to Toshogu Shrine to re-enact the burial of Tokugawa Ieyasu.
