What are your thoughts of Tomorang as a Southeast Asian Simmer? I'd genuinely like to hear your thoughts.
I'll share mine as a Malay person with Indonesian ancestry myself.
I'd discuss mostly about the cultural aspects of this DLC since my culture is RARELY represented in the western media, so having a Sims DLC that's sort of based on my culture is really cool as fuck. I am not gonna touch on the renting aspects of it, I heard it's buggy and to be fair I haven't played enough on the renting gameplay as much.
So when I got the pack and looked at the world for the first time, I did notice there are two lots with names in Malay language. (or Indonesian) This made me surprised since I assumed the pack was mostly about Thai culture and didn't expect much.
One is called "Zosul Taman Botani" or translated to "Zosul Botanic Gardens." I can't remember the other one. But they're both translated well, no mistakes there! But other than that, there's.. not a lot of lots? There's the market, but isn't it a rehash of City Living's, or Snowy Escape's markets?
Well, I went and played the game. Now here's what I noticed.
The atmosphere and the tropical setting reminded me a LOT like a village area in some parts of Malaysia or Singapore pre-rapid development. It has this "Kampung" (Village) vibe to it, and I love it. I really do. I'm assuming this has to be the same for villages in many parts of SEAsian countries.
I wasn't raised in a village environment nor have I personally visited one (HAHA I'm an urban city person please forgive me-) but I've read and listened to stories about it at school and from my parents before. The furniture, decors, and buildings looked somewhat similar to how my parents/grandparents/great-grandparents would've lived in during their time, just more wooden, I think. The marble is accurate, village kids would always play marbles back in the day, I know my parents used to. I don't know about now, they might be an iPad kid who never went outside.
Squat toilets are accurate, and you'd be surprised to hear how it still exists in modern shopping malls in Singapore and Malaysia, and there's only like 1-2 stalls of those per bathroom but you don't see many people using it, and if there are, it might've been older generations or people who really need to go that bad. Even then, I hardly see squat toilets in Singapore's apartments. Many people use the widely used modern toilet we have today.
I can also tell you that the decors, walls, and floorings sometimes do appear in apartments with Malay families in it today. So, yeah!
And yes, the iconic plastic chair, too. I swear those plastic chairs always appear in a many Malay wedding parties and from my late grandparents's place. The tuk-tuk is also cool too, sounds like it's used in Singapore and Malaysia in the olden days. You hardly see them anymore except in Thailand, maybe Philippines, and maybe even Indonesia? It does seem nostalgic to those who've rode it before so yeah! It's nice!
So yeah, in terms of gameplay interactions,
Your sims would greet each other just like how the Thai folks do with a sawadeekap. I think that's cool!
I believe the faith Tomoranis practised in the game was the equivalent of Thailand's form of Buddhism? Which is actually really neat, not gonna lie. I don't know how accurate this would be for Thai Buddhists folks and I'm not familiar with Buddhism myself, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
But then that also got me confused af. Is the world and culture supposed to be a weird Thai-Indo-Malay-Philippines fusion? I mean, I know it's majorly Thai, but there's two lots I'm certain that are in Malay/Indo language, and there are cuisine based on many Southeast Asian cultures? They'll be referred to as Tomorani cuisine in the game as you see your sim's moodlet mentioning it. So that's why I'm VERY puzzled. I know the game tries to make Tomorani a whole Southeast Asian fusion so that us SEAsian players can feel included, but it's important to remember many Southeast Asian cultures can be different, too.
A part of a culture can be different and not practiced in another culture. That's why I feel hesitant to put my simself or my simself's family with the Tomorani culture trait, as much as I love it. It feels as if it ain't a part of my culture and it rubs me off the wrong way to see my simself's family to greet or pray like Thai Buddhist people because well, none of us are Thai lol and I don't wanna feel like I'm culturally appropriating something I'm not a part of.
It doesn't matter that I have super distant Thai or Dai Chinese ancestry in me. I was never raised in those cultures and I can't claim I'm a part of those. They're all dead way before my grandparents were born. I can say my Indonesian ancestry matters, though.
Though I'm not extremely familiar with everything in Indonesian culture, the Malay and Indonesian culture/cuisine/language are super similar and many relatives of my relatives are part Javanese (Based on Indonesian's Island of Java. NOT JAPANESE FROM JAPAN.) or part of an Indonesian minority like the Bugis people. It's just that we don't really speak Indonesian (we can still somewhat understand) or Javanese. My late grandparent did spoke the Bugis language but not our descendants, tho. Javanese and Bugis language are like a whole different language and script to learn.
But yeah, only the Thais would greet people with sawadeekap, and they practice Buddhism. Majority of Malays, Filipinos, and Indonesians in today's world do not practice Buddhism and we definitely do not greet people like that, haha. Those are very uniquely Thai.
Ancient Malays and Indonesians did practiced Hinduism or Buddhism (maybe a combo of both) in the ancient times. I'm not sure about Filipino but it *might* be similar? Then the majority of Malays and Indonesians converted to Islam after dealing with traders from the Middle east. So now you got majority Malays and Indonesians raised or ID themselves as Muslims. There are Indonesian Christians, but they are the minorities.
The modern Muslim Malays and Indos would greet with a salam. This is like a handshake, but you only kiss the hand if it's your relative or someone older than you?
This can depend on your age, if the other person is also Malay/Indo, and your gender. It's something like.. How the Japanese have different ways of bowing to people.
The cuisine could be.. better? They did nasi lemak fucking dirty and it LOOKS absolutely nothing like a typical nasi lemak. It looks more like.. Beehoon noodles or chicken noodles?
Goddamn have the Sims team ever look at a picture of nasi lemak on GOOGLE? Satay is fine, it is accurate af and I like that. Just found it odd that the satay's peanut condiment was gone after your sim took the first bite.
The kopi luwak is funny to me, I never tried it before but I can tell you it's basically poop coffee from a part of Indonesia. It's quite expensive and what they do is feed the coffee beans to the civets, then the civets poop it out. They clean the poop away, and pick the coffee beans. They then sell it as Kopi Luwak. To be honest, I was expecting funny moodlets when your sim drinks it or realizes it's poop coffee, but unfortunately I don't think there's one. But I wonder why aren't there other coffee or tea options? There's a LOT of drinks in Southeast Asian cultures, or maybe add a Sim's version of Nestle's Milo. It's like Nesquik but it's originated from Australia, and this is consumed in every food court or places you eat at. At least in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
I do think the food and drinks are wasted potential though. There's a lot of cuisine they could add, like sinangag/fried rice, mee soto, teh tarik, or even special fried instant noodles.
In conclusion I'd say that this pack is okayish in terms of diversity. I mean, I'm rarely represented in the western media so I guess this isn't too bad. I'm disappointed with the lack of gameplay content in the world compared to other worlds like Sulani or Komorebi and I know this game focuses more on rental and being a landlord but it's just.. There's so many types of lots that can be included. I'm sick of just having a bar as a lounge area just to meet the local sims and how the lots are so SMALL for an EXPANSION pack. This is just as bad as Del Sol Valley, but even then I can assume housing is difficult in real life Socal Hollywood.
What about a museum for Tomorani heritage culture? A restaurant, a spa, and other types of lots would honestly be a GREAT choice but unfortunately they're locked behind DLCs! ✨️
I have really mixed feelings about it. It could be better. It's not the best, but it has a lot of room for improvements.

I both don't care about the Sims lore, yet also care enough about it to keep all premade Sims in my games intact (except they always end up gay in my worlds) and to talk about it (and bitch about it) for hours to friends while simultaneously saying how I don't care.
Sims 4 occult lore is insane but for the average townie it just sucks

Tomorang Tiles - For Rent Wall and Floor Addon
When I saw the tiles in the new For Rent Expansion, I felt in love. However, talking to HeyHarrie, it became evident that there was a serious oversight not turning these wonderful designs into walls as well. So I set to work making that reality, and with another suggestion, the smaller version was added to the project. Now you can enjoy even more wonderful tiles and not limit yourself just to the floors of your builds.

Sorry it took me a minute to type up the response to this ask; I would absolutely LOVE to expand on this, thank you so much for asking!! I will warn you that this ended up being quite a longwinded explanation of my personal Werewolf world lore, so I'm sorry about that in advance! 🙈😂

Let’s get into it! ↓
I've talked about how I don't treat sim worlds as isolated entities in the past, but I've never gotten deep into that - I'll start there so my Moonwood lore makes sense!
Basically, I see Granite Falls as a location within Moonwood Mill. To go one step further, I actually don't even see Moonwood Mill as its own isolated "world" but rather as a small town within a bigger city within a bigger state within a country and so on. Think of Granite Falls as a large property within Moonwood Mill, and Moonwood Mill as an industrial, dying small town that is within driving distance to its larger city counterpart Evergreen Harbor, and all of these places exist in the same state. For me, the states these worlds are a part of are usually real-life states! Of course not all the worlds feel "American" to me (Selvadorada, Tomorang, Mt. Komerebi being perfect examples) but the ones that do usually get categorized this way in my mind.
For example: San Sequoia and Del Sol Valley are the easiest and most widely accepted representation of this idea. I treat both of these "worlds" as large, neighboring cities that exist within the same state, much like their assumed real-world counterparts Los Angeles and San Francisco which both reside in California. Another example is San Myshuno which I've seen a lot of players think of in the same way they see New York City, which resides in New York State. Moonwood Mill, Granite Falls, and Evergreen Harbor all function this way in my mind and would all share the same state! (I'm not a geography whiz, so I've never given it much though which irl state they would be a part of, but with the greenery, industrial, and dreary/rainy vibes my money would be on Washington or, alternatively, I personally see them being in a state that falls somewhere in the Appalachian area, like West Virginia!)
Okay, that's the long explanation I had to get out of the way before I jump into this next lore part... sorry! I'm getting to the good stuff now though, I promise!
Granite Falls and Moonwood Mill are on an even smaller scale than the San Sequoia/Del Sol Valley relationship, in my opinion. To me, Granite Falls feels like a national park or forest/nature preserve that surrounds Moonwood Mill and therefore ultimately falls under their jurisdiction. HOWEVER, the primary caretakers of Granite Falls are technically an independent commune... better known as "The Moonwood Collective."
I don't think there's enough room in the town center of Moonwood Mill to accommodate two whole wolf packs AND the handful of human locals that remain. Additionally, when you take into consideration the canon growing tension between these two packs and their various different ways of life, I have a hard time seeing them effectively coexisting in such close proximity. Besides that, Modern Moonwood Mill in its broken down, industrial, haphazard state suits the Wildfangs more than The Moonwood Collective - I can see the influence that the Wildfangs have had on the area, but where is The Collective's influence? Even the layout of Moonwood Mill and the lots which are located within walking distance of the rowdy dive bar screams Wildfang energy to me.
We also know that The Collective is much older than the Wildfangs, as it was formed back when Moonwood Mill was just beginning to have settlers and refugees who were fleeing from conflict (the big magical war between spellcasters/vampires/werewolves). Referred to only as "Moonwood" back then due to the area's obvious connection to the moon's energy, the founders of the town established The Collective - in the sims lore, it seems to imply that The Collective is the first pack of its kind to organize werewolves into a hierarchal structure with the goal of encouraging self-sustainability, diplomatic communication, and communal contribution within its wolf members. In my mind, I've always seen The Collective as people who reject societal comforts and embrace naturalism, self-discipline/emotional control, herbalism and holistic medicine practices, minimalist living, homesteading, community caretaking, things of that nature... and there really isn't anywhere in Moonwood Mill specifically that conveys that kind of influence. Granite Falls, however, sure feels magical with its sprawling plantlife and natural oddities... that is a place that could support their lifestyle!
If you look at the maps of these two places, it isn't hard to imagine Granite Falls as the wooded area close to the Moonwood Lunvik Lake, the spot where werewolves can "awaken the wolf" if they swim there during a full moon, because Granite falls is surrounded by various bodies of water AND mountain structures on it's right side... just like the mountain structures and woods that frame Moonwood Mill in the upper left hand of its map! Let me give you two shitty graphics I made to help illustrate what I mean:

It's not a one-for-one perfect comparison, but it's so damn close that it feels natural to see the worlds as complimentary! Especially with The Collective's connection to the ancient spiritualism of the original wolves and mooncasters, it just makes sense that they would opt live in a commune-esque community on the outskirts of Moonwood Mill, as opposed to being right in the epicenter of town. This way they're close to the sacred Lunvik Lake, just far enough outside of society to seclude their true nature, but still close enough to help the remaining human locals. I even have a silly headcanon that the "Big Foot" of Granite Falls is actually just the pack-less werewolf Greg, as we know he lives secluded, deep in the forest...it just makes sense that people might see him raging in wolf form at night and be like "Oh shit, big foot!"
With the Wildfangs being a newer pack that is more open to embracing the wolf parts of themselves, they wouldn't feel the need to "hide" and pull themselves out of society in the way that The Collective does. That being said, they also wouldn't have the resources, structure, and defined communal space that a very old pack like The Collective would have... therefore they're just scattered around Moonwood Mill in their family homes, the trailer park (some people do a motel instead - I can see both working well), and so on. Some lots even tell their buyers to ignore the "howling in the distance," and because the Collective hides their true nature, I feel this must be referring to the Wildfang's full moon antics and their willingness to "embrace the beast."
Either way, It seems to me that The Collective has always believed it best to stay hidden, so it makes sense that they would form their community on the outskirts of Moonwood Mill not just for their own safety, but for the safety of the human locals as well. I think they likely relocated to Granite Falls years before the Wildfangs existed and when a huge uptick in human settlers came in, chasing the riches associated with Moonwood's mines or, more likely, the mills which the town would be eventually named after. But as time went on and the town went to ruin (some people theorize due to the wolves, some people theorize the town's natural industries just became less profitable in the age of technology), people abandoned it and opted to move to the newer city - Evergreen Harbor. (See, we came full circle!)
That kind of leads us to where I'm at in my game, in "modern day." A lot of time has passed, and Moonwood Mill has changed dramatically since its inception. I prefer to imagine that the remaining human locals are not fully aware of the werewolves living among them with 100% certainty, but there are legends and stories. The oldest locals cultivate and pass down not just the stories but the protective practices to their children and grandchildren as well: don't go into the woods on a full moon, if the woods get quiet out of nowhere stay calm and find the closest way out, close all the blinds when it gets dark, don't go out on a full moon, bring the animals in or secure them in the barn for their protection on full moon nights, if you hear a whistle in the woods do not whistle back, and so on. Unfortunately, those stories, wives' tales, and superstitions tend to attract potential enemies to werewolf-kind: rogue vampires seeking to harm werewolves and even occult hunters. HOWEVER, by retreating into the woods, The Collective are closer to what they believe is their spiritual source - Lunvik Lake - where the original mooncasters created werewolves and Myshupotamians worshipped the moon. By being closer to their source, they are strengthened and therefore able to keep out potential threats, protect their own pack, and watch over Moonwood Mill as a whole more effectively. I don't think the Wildfangs are particularly interested in this part of their Lyncanthropy - its something uniquely embeded in the history of The Collective and why it was created in the first place.
LASTLY, my Moonwood Mill/magic world in general is actually years ahead of where we start in game, and in my mind the magic world is on the precipice of another war (a long anticipated response after the destruction caused by Operation Eternal Flame. Vlad isn't one to take losses, and the Spellcaster/Vampire tensions are still very much palpable). I'm not going to get fully into all that, but I will say that the Wildfangs are a far more established pack, still led by their alpha, Rory (albeit a much older, wiser Rory) and The Collective is led by Rory's adoptive brother, Jacob Volkov, after their father (and former alpha of The Collective) Kristopher died. Although the tensions between the Wildfangs and The Moonwood Collective aren't as severe any more, they do still have trouble coexisting from an occult governance/council perspective. Again, I have a whole lore about occult governance as well, but I won't get into all that either haha. The TLDR is that there are two big issues between the Wildfangs and The Collective at the present moment: the first being how Rory has gone about growing the Wildfangs (by recruiting pack-less werewolves outside of Moonwood Mill, something The Collective has always been against since its inception) and second, their willingness to work with spellcasters if another occult war breaks out.

I hope I managed to answer your question (and some). Thank you for asking me about this, I literally never get to talk occult lore and it is one of my favorite things to explore in the sims!! I feel like no one cares about my occult headcanons and such... but sometimes that's all I want to talk about lmao. If I had the time and talent to make a story about this very topic, I WOULD! But for now this is all I have to offer <3

Very Berry Legacy Challenge Rules __________________ When Raspberry's mother, a Sixam alien, first settled on Earth, she decided to take on a berry sim name, as those humans had colorful hair and eyes like her. Inspired by her surroundings in Mt. Komorebi, she picked the sweet Japanese dessert of "Mochi" as a surname. Later on, she chose her favorite fruit, "Pomegranate" as a first name.
Pomegranate traveled all over the world studying human cultures, but in Tomorang she met Mistan, a sith pureblood (a species incorrectly presumed to be extinct), who, like so many other aliens, fled to Earth to hide from the oppressive hand of the Empire. They fell in love and built a life together.
Their eldest daughter, Raspberry, has just moved out to her own apartment! It's very small: one bedroom and a living area/kitchen, but there is an attached storefront and a small fenced area for her goat, Ziost.
Raspberry has lofty ambitions. An avid cook, she hopes to one day run her own bakery, the best in Tomarang. A distant dream, but her little home shop is doing very well so far, now that she's gotten the hang of things.
Living in such a cramped complex has its ups and downs. Camryn, a witch and one of her neighbors, hates Raspberry because of her Sixam heritage and turned some of the others against her.
Voltrenn, on the other hand, warmly welcomed Raspberry the day she moved in, and the two of them instantly clicked. They've been on a few dates, but haven't made things official. Voltrenn, a jedi, seems indecisive on whether he wants to uphold the traditional jedi stance on attachments. Raspberry wants an actual committed relationship, so unless Voltrenn decides (quickly) that he wholeheartedly wants to be her official boyfriend, she's going to take a step back.

Meet the Ngam family (mini ‘for rent’ lp)
My family jewel legacy posts are queued up for every morning, and my ‘for rent’ post will be in the evening :)
Extra background history:
Nan’s mom passed away when she was a child. After her death, her dad decided to move them in the city area of Tomarang. At 17 yrs old, Nan moved to San Myshuno to pursue competitive swimming. There she met Lucas, and after months of dating they became a couple. A few years later, Nan found out that she was pregnant. Although not planned, Nan and Lucas tried to make the best of it. At first, they lived together when Annop was an infant. Then, they separated and co-parented when he was a toddler (with Nan taking care of him 24/7 and Lucas having him two weekends per month). And then they got married when he was a child. The marriage lasted a year, and both adults realized that this family just wasn’t working out. So, Nan and Lucas divorced. Nan moved back to Tomorang and takes care of Annop during the school year. While Lucas remains in San myshuno, and sees Annop during school breaks and over monthly video calls.

just putting this out there for simblr in case someone can answer. i have the 'for rent' expansion and it is only letting me create residential rental lots in the new map. when i go to say, willow creek or henford-on-bagley, these are the only lot type options i have

i figure this is a choice made by the dev team, rather than a bug, but i don't know for sure. and if there's a mod to fix this i'd love to get it.
i've been trying to search around for an answer but navigating through all the "this isn't helpful at all" results gives me a headache. i'd really appreciate some help here. if i can only use this feature on the one map it's kinda useless for me :/
