They plopped down onto their beanbags again and waited impatiently as The Matrix DVD loaded. The trailers for other new movies began and Michael stood up. “I’m gonna make some popcorn. Want some?” he asked. Jeremy hummed in confirmation, not looking up from his phone, where he was absentmindedly looking up The Matrix facts and waiting for the Menu Screen to appear.

Apparently the Menu Screen had appeared and someone had hit Play on the remote absentmindedly and they hadn’t noticed. The volume had been too low for them to hear so it took Michael turning to the T.V. to notice and yell “Oh, shit, it started, man!” as he turned up the volume.

Jeremy successfully jumped a foot in the air at the volume of his boyfriend’s voice and looked up. But he didn’t stop talking to hear the movie. He stopped talking because the words died in his throat at what was on the screen. Or, better yet, who. Michael had also noticed who was on the screen and turned to ask Jeremy if he was alright with this before he very clearly noted he was not alright with this.

(Or: The fic that makes no sense because my brain thought of it at 3AM but I wrote it a anyways.)

I MIGHT HAVE FIGURED OUT DISNEY'S RECIPE FOR A PERFECT SEQUEL: ft. frozen 2 and ralph breaks the internet

ok hear me out

many of us animation fans remember the hype over frozen l, it's actually what got me back into animation in the first place. and after the hype wore off, many of us came to the conclusion that it wasn't even that great. like sure, it was okay, but why did we like it so much?

so here's how i think they do it: they make the first movie a cute, fun action/adventure coming-of-age story with the main plot being some sort of quest for the main, and the real action only coming at the climax.

the first movie is actually kind of mediocre but no one realizes it bc of the huge twist at the very end (see frozen one and wreck it ralph's climax for the "not-what-he-seems" trope.) this twist makes everyone love the movie bc the ending made them shook so they overlook the rest of the mediocrity. the real goal of the movie is to introduce the characters to the audience and each other, give them their "place to belong" in the movie (you know how it is; almost every main character starts as an outcast and ends as a champion somehow) and allow them their character development to set them up for the potential sequel.

now once they're introduced in movie one with mostly adventure and minimal action, movie two can be packed with as much action and adventure as the creators want without them having to worry about having to top the first movie. as long as they don't change the characters too much (character development is still important tho so it won't be dismissed; see ralph breaks the internet climax when ralph is struggling with letting vanellope go/the ending when vanellope finally moves to slaughter race.) the characters can be sent on larger quests, with more dangerous villains, and voila, a bigger, better sequel.

the only problem with this is, it doesn't leave room for a better third movie (or it leaves very, very, little wiggle room, since it would just be a repeat cycle as far as i can tell.)

frozen ll is also set to come out in november of this year, so im only basing this theory off of the wreck it ralph movies and the frozen ll teaser trailer. (ralph breaks the internet was a decidedly good sequel in my opinion. i mean it was the first blockbuster disney sequel, making $56m its opening weekend. we'll have to see how frozen ll fares, after its predecessor made $93m in 2013.) if frozen ll's plotline goes any way like this (considering the same team worked on both films) i'm ready to believe i've figured out the recipe to an actually good sequel.
