SHINee's 8th album"HARD" has been selected as excellent albums to soundtrack summer 2023 on i-D (British Media) and being the ONLY KPOP act on the list.
(t/w:dec18) Between hiatuses for military services, health issues affecting lead vocalist ONEW the tragic suicide of member JONGHYUN in 2017, K-pop group SHINee has experienced unimaginable highs and lows in its landmark 15 years on the scene. In any pop subculture, staying relevant and, most of all, “cool” is no easy task, but SHINee has carved out a sustainable niche with an emphasis on harmonies, musicality and finely-detailed production choc full of tonal switches.
All of their adversity means the joyful organized chaos of Hard, the group’s eighth studio album and first since 2021, takes on a sense of both poignance and catharsis. On their best songs, genres smash into one another like cars in a demolition derby, battling entertainingly for space in the same chorus, verse and even couplet. “Insomnia” evolves from fleet-footed rapping atop spacious percussion to a kind of rainy-night-at-the-jazz-club groove with lush guitars and heavenly harmonies. The title track brings in an array of rap influences, from 80s boom bap to Pharrell-inspired 00s minimalism, but the industrial boom is countered masterfully by a languid bridge featuring snaking vocals from ONEW and TAEMIN.
With Hard, SHINee proves that despite its members’ struggles, the group isn’t done pushing them either.

SHINee graced the cover of 'Allure' last spring. Did you read the interview contents of the other members when the magazine was out?
Of course. I read all of them. There are many parts where we can expect since we know each other so well right now but sometimes, there would be parts where we we would go "Oh? He has thoughts like this?" We will get to know this person has things like this in mind. The cover came out well and our fans liked it a lot so I can remember it well.
In that case, if the interview today is seen by the members?
This is just my thoughts but I don't think they will see it. Ah! Onew-Hyung will see it. Hyung is the kind to look at all the member's activities. He knows all of it regardless who does what.
Each member of SHINee feels different but also alike at the same time. Things like that way make you guys feel al ot of pride
You can feel that even though we all have our own personalities, the direction we are headed towards is the same. It's like we all share the same heart no matter how it is. There is that part were we sweat and work hard together so that's why we have that sense of 'Pride' about it but rather than feeling a sense of pride in any records we made, It's more about how much hard work we put in, this is how much we sweat and how we have put in our very best regardless of the reaction five to the final outcome. I think that's what's more important. All it needs is for one person, regardless of who, to now put in the effort and I wouldn't have been able to say things like this (if not)
We are all waiting for TAEMIN's return together

Now: I don't dream much, but there are moments I cry when I wake up. Although I don't remember the dreams but I really cried a lot of tears.

What is your source of energy?
The affection from my parents. When I returned home for chuseok, I painfully realize that my parents wanted to eat rice with their son. Since I'm the only child.I still felt the "love" that kept them watching over me. So when I drive around my parents, I've been taking videos with my phone.
How do you exactly describe your personality in one word?
"Grandpa"....Not exactly, but a tough guy, maybe a "Father?" It's not something I care about, I don't care at all. You get angry when friends do bad things, Sometimes I poke their fore heads (laughs) and talk properly with them. "Don't you think you should stop?" but I apologize if I make mistake. If they say "Why being bad? You're being worse!" then I honestly say "Ah, really, I'm sorry!" (laughs)
How do the SHINee members call you?
Key calls me "old man" It's atttached to a kindness and affection, but before, I was called "nuruguni"* This is a negavtive nuance like "The elderly" (laughs) but that's just a joke from Key. He usually says "Jinki-hyung" or just "Hyung" Taemin calls me "Onew hyung"
