I can’t claim this “The Last of Us” analysis, but I wanted to share it here because it’s a fascinating thought:
Bill in the game was a cautionary tale. He was a model for what Joel should avoid becoming, which was a closed-off, selfish loner who managed to push away the person he cared about the most.
Bill in the show is Joel’s inspiration/model. He is the one who puts into Joel’s head that he needs to stop being a closed-off, selfish loner and that he must do whatever it takes to save the person he cares about the most.
And what’s cool about this is that, even though both Bills are different, they both served the same purpose regarding Joel’s character.

I’ve had a lotta bad days. I’ve had bad days with you, too. But I’ve had... more good days with you than with anyone else.

I lost it at "My blood is medicine." They were both so scared, and she showed Sam her bite to prove to both of them that he could live, too. She really was hopeful that it would work. I've played the game, and I still wanted it to work! I wanted it to work so, so badly. I knew it couldn't, but it didn't stop me. They captured that desperation and that hope here. This scene was amazing, I'm so glad they put it in.
"For kids, it's easier, you don't have anyone depending on you," nahhh she's internalized this shit for life now. She couldn't save Riley. Smearing her blood on Sam's bite didn't work. We now know that rudimentary treatments like this can't save others from cordyceps. But if she'd had a medicine, maybe Riley and Sam would still be around. This scene was so good for demonstrating Ellie's thought process behind getting the operation. Because, for Ellie, what good is this immunity if all it does is mean she ends up alone?

the second he left the clothes on the bed I knew, so the fact that, while they're playing the piano, my dad went "uh oh someone's getting his throat slit" just slapped me in the face like how can you be so incredibly blind to such blatantly obvious things unfolding right in front of your own two eyes, my guy??

Some more changes in “The Last of Us” TV show that I thought were improvements on the game:
1) Tommy calls Joel to bail him out of jail. It’s a small scene but it does help establish that Joel is the older, more responsible brother while Tommy is the younger, more reckless brother. It gives more dimension to Joel’s line of “I bring you the cure for mankind and you wanna play the pissy little brother”.
2) Joel possibly being a Desert Storm veteran. Because if he was, then his line “you have no idea what loss is” becomes even more tragic since it’s not clear which part of his life he’s talking about. Is he talking about Sarah, surviving the post-apocalypse, or the horrors of the Gulf War? Technically speaking, he could be talking about all three events, which is just incredibly sad.
3) As an add-on for point 2, either Joel or Tommy being a Desert Storm veteran works better for the story since it makes it more believable that the Miller brothers were able to survive for 20 years in the zombie apocalypse.
4) “Che Guevara of Boston”. It’s one line, but it tells you all you need to know about Marlene and the Fireflies. Honestly, I got a better understanding of Marlene through that one line than the explanation in the original game.
5) Tess telling Joel to calm down and that going after Robert will make him go into hiding. I know that might seem trivial but the show is subtly telling us that Joel is incredibly dangerous. In the game, this was established by going into combat as Joel. The show can’t just rely on action scenes since that would screw up the pacing and tone, so the next best way to establish Joel’s badassery is through dialogue. “Robert is scared of you because you’re a dangerous motherfucker, that’s why I need you to chill”, that’s basically what Tess said.
6) Joel beats the guard to death in order to protect Ellie. In this one scene, Joel has already bonded Ellie to his memory of Sarah and Ellie was introduced to Joel’s savagery, which is pretty impressive considering that it’s a scene with no dialogue (for at least that section).

Nothing funnier in Episode 3 than when Frank was like, "I don't just sleep with people for free lunch, so if we're doing this, I'm staying for a couple days," and then the screen immediately cutting to "THREE YEARS LATER"

Tlou thoughts
No, but.
There's something that's so specific about the violence on this show that is so specific? Thought out?
It's not torture porn, it's not gazey. It's not game of thrones-y. It's not for consumption. Its not for the audience at all. It's a tool that the characters use.

i just want to say how much i appreciate the last of us for not showing riley’s death. for so many other shows this would be a gruesome scene, it’d the climax of it all. it’s what people WANT in a zombie show. blood. death. horror.
but the last of us let us see riley and ellie huddled together, loving each other in her final moments.
we KNOW riley is dead. we KNOW that ellie has said she has killed before. we can infer that the first person she killed was riley. we dont need to see it.
it especially means a lot since this is a lesbian couple. not showing ellie kill the girl she loves means riley gets some dignity in death.
we dont need to see another lesbian die on screen. we dont need to see another lesbian die in a gruesome way after their first kiss with the girl they love.
