The Herd is a timely, intriguing and thought provoking novel that is absolutely perfect for a bookclub to unpick. It was a recent choice for the #bitcrackbookclub and led to some brilliant discussions, thoughts and feelings from all our readers. It does cover some potentially inflammatory or controversial topics but it was truly fascinating to talk about the events as a group, no matter what our personal views might be. ⁣ ⁣ This novel is mainly focused on two women, Elizabeth and Bryony who have become trusted friends despite the difference in their personalities, and are even godmothers to each others children. However, when a decision arises (due to a local measles outbreak), regarding whether to vaccinate your children or not, the two women find they are on completely opposite sides of the spectrum. The difference in their opinion of this issue has life-changing consequences for their friendship, for their children and for their futures.⁣ ⁣ Vaccination is a very divisive subject, as we’ve all seen with the recent COVID pandemic and I can understand why people feel so passionately about it, whatever their personal stance is. Until I read this novel though, I couldn’t see past my own viewpoint. I haven’t changed my mind regarding my own beliefs but I really admired how Emily Edwards showed us both sides of the argument. Even though you may not agree with the other side personally, you mind understand why they feel so much fear. This was definitely the case for me. ⁣ ⁣ The Herd is such a well-considered and memorable read. It’s one of those stories that sticks in your mind long after you’ve finished and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey whilst I was reading it. ⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagramuk #theherd #emilyedwards #thoughtprovokingreads #memorablereads #readingonmykindle #reviewingbooksonthegram #booksandplants🌵📖 #booksthatmakeyouthinkaboutlife #greatbookclubbook #booksforbookclubs #buddyreadswithfriends https://www.instagram.com/p/CpgD4sdrf4S/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“For now, he was alive, and in the morning he would start to think about what that meant.” 💬✨💬 Trigger warnings for suicide idealisation and suicide! 💬 Contacts by Mark Watson is a touchingly funny contemporary that deals with the consequences and ripples that effect not only the person considering suicide, but those that they are planning on leaving behind. I was immediately drawn in with the premise of this novel - one man, deciding that he’s had enough, sends his entire phone contact list a text message... one that just so happens to be his final goodbye, before he turns his phone on airplane mode and boards a train. This book was quirky in the best kind of way. We saw into the lives of some of the people effected by the text message, and the way they banded together to support the main character, and themselves. It was touching and hilarious, and evoked all the feels. The writing style was fun and quick paced, which made it a quick and easy read! I throughly enjoyed my time with these characters and seeing how things both came together and ended. 💬✨💬 Contacts is book 7 for 2021. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #bookwhore #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2021 #auskiwibooksta #bookquote #contactsbook #markwatson #contactsmarkwatson #contemporaryhumour #thoughtprovokingreads https://www.instagram.com/p/CKggr59gdEc/?igshid=1i88uw86k72zt

Sunset by Jessie Cave was a real surprise to read and I have to be honest, I’m still processing my thoughts about it weeks after finishing. It’s the story of two sisters, Ruth and Hannah who are polar opposites in many ways but have a strong sisterly bond that is traumatically broken after an accident when they go on holiday together. ⁣ ⁣ Ruth is forced to re-evaluate her life, knowing that Hannah was always the more responsible and “together” of the sisters whereas she had a reputation for being a little wilder and carefree. Sunset explores how Hannah navigates her grief and tries to move forward and how she manages the guilt that arises with several of the decisions she makes. ⁣ ⁣ This novel is an interesting mixture of both laughter and tears. Obviously it covers some very upsetting themes but it manages them in a sensitive and authentic way and I loved how it wasn’t afraid to explore real world issues or more taboo subjects that are rarely written about. ⁣ ⁣ My favourite part of the story had to be the relationship between Ruth and Hannah - it touched me very personally as I’m very lucky to have a similarly close relationship with my own sister and I couldn’t bear it if something like this were to happen to us. ⁣ ⁣ Sunset is a highly emotive novel and I did find myself thinking and re-thinking about certain passages or mental images I had in my head because of the powerful and compelling nature of the writing. I’ll definitely be checking out anything else Jessie Ware writes! ⁣ ⁣ Four solid stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 ⁣ #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #bookreview #sunset #jessiecave #recommendedreading📚 #booksaboutsisters #booksaboutgrief #thoughtprovokingreads #reviewingbooksonthegram #booksthathaveallthefeels https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch0GH9SrLuO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I haven’t accepted a book for review in quite some time but when @oneworldpublications got in touch to see if I’d be interested in reading and reviewing The Weight Of Loss, I read the synopsis and was won over instantly. Thank you to them for my free copy in exchange for an honest review.⁣ ⁣ This is a clever, lyrical and meandering story that explores the themes of mental health, loss, grief and rehabilitation in a very interesting way. Our protagonist Marianne begins to notice long, thick black hairs protruding from her spine and even though her doctor tells her it may be her body’s physical reaction to grief, she takes up the offer of a specialised wellness retreat to help her work through her issues. ⁣ ⁣ The book then follows Marianne at the clinic and delves into her past with her sister, Marie before climaxing into a completely unanticipated ending. It blends magical realism and literary fiction together with a sprinkling of the weird and wonderful. ⁣ ⁣ I’m torn on my feelings for this book. I loved the imagery of the black hairs along Marianne’s spine and what they represented and some of my favourite moments were the relationship between Marianne and Marie, the latter of whom made me want to hug then shake them in equal measure! I felt as if I was so invested in the first half but then it lost me a little near the end. ⁣ ⁣ However, it’s clear that Sally Oliver oozes talent and I’m excited to see what she comes out with next. ⁣ ⁣ 3.5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 💫 #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #scottishbookstagrammer #readingandreviewing #theweightofloss #sallyoliver #upandcomingauthors #literaryfictionbooks #booksaboutgrief #oneworldpublications #storiesaboutsisters #thoughtprovokingreads #giftedbook https://www.instagram.com/p/ChsXknULtW0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

I adore everything I’ve read by Louise O’Neill so far so I was really excited to get to her latest adult novel Idol, which definitely had a more “thriller,” vibe than her previous works but also deals with some harrowing issues and relatable current events like social media and cancel culture. ⁣ ⁣ This is the story of Samantha Miller, a lifestyle guru and social media darling with three million followers, a book at the top of the charts and sold out events where she speaks to a multitude of adoring fans. Recently she shared an experience from her formative years which was a sexual experience with her best friend at the time. However, Lisa, the girl who she was talking about, gets in touch stating that this experience did not happen in the way Sam is insinuating. ⁣ ⁣ Although I think I’ve loved other books by O’Neill a little more, this story is an absolute page turner in every sense of the word. It explores so many important issues, specifically sexual assault and consent but it also delves into the accuracy of memory and how each person in a situation may remember an event differently. In these cases, where is the truth? Or is each individual entitled to their truth and how they felt at that particular moment and space in time? ⁣ ⁣ This novel makes for an excellent discussion and I was lucky to read it with the #bitcrackbookclub where we were tossing round endless theories right until the end! The characters are convoluted, unpredictable and I loved the way that the author did not choose the atypical path of man vs woman from a sexual assault POV.⁣ ⁣ Louise O’Neill is an excellent author for creating thought provoking and poignant, important narratives. I can’t wait for whatever she writes next! ⁣ ⁣ 3.5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 💫 ⁣ #bookstagram #scottishbookstagrammer #idol #louiseoneill #louiseoneillauthor #irishauthorscorner #irishauthorsilove #readingonmykindle #bookclubreads📚 #buddyreads #thoughtprovokingreads #booksthatmakeyouthink #favouriteirishauthor #recommendedreading📚 https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg2KFp4rKln/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

“Perhaps the question wasn’t ‘when does a fetid become a person?’ but ‘when does a woman stop being one?’” ✨📖✨📖✨ Trigger warnings for gun violence, abortion, racism, sexism, murder and graphic medical description. Slight mentions of rape and incest. Please read with care. 📖✨📖 A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult is a book that’s been on my TBR for ages, and one that I am very pleased to have finally read. Picoult is honestly one of my very favourite authors to read, and one of my few auto-buy authors. I love her books. This book was such an incredibly hard read, but one that I think needed to be read. It's an undeniably informative and well-researched book on a hot topic, and it goes so far as to consider the relationship between abortion politics and race politics, while also making it relatable and human. The narrative takes place over a single day and is told in reverse, moving through the perspectives of several characters who all have different circumstances and agendas. It was really well thought out, and the arguments for both sides were relatively well balanced. There are so many quotes I could have and wanted to choose to start the beginning of this post with, but this is the one that struck me the hardest. This book is honestly one of the most thought provoking works that I’ve read in a little while, and I have no doubt that this will stay with me for a long time. I’m very aware that this book will not be for everyone, and that there will be very polarising opinions regarding it, but for me personally, I thought that Picoult tackled a very controversial issue with empathy and understanding for both sides of the argument, while also giving us characters that I came to care about. ✨📖✨📖✨ A Spark of Light is book 64 for 2020. #bookstragram #books #booksofinstagram #booklover #bookphoto #reading #aussieswhoread #avidreader #booklover #aussiereader #bookdragon #reader #readersofig #booksofig #bookcommunity #bookish #bibliophile #readersofinstagram #bookstagrammer #booklife #bookaddict #girlswhoread #readinggoals2020 #bookquote #asparkoflight #jodipicoult #hardhittingreads #thoughtprovokingreads #thoughtprovokingquotes #blueandwhite #incrediblereads https://www.instagram.com/p/CBgB_D0A7q5/?igshid=xphzo6kjrqzs
