This is the artwork of Bill Traylor, a formerly enslaved African-American man who was born on an Alabama plantation and lived as a sharecropper after emancipation. Traylor was a self-taught artist who did not begin producing work until he was 85 years old. From 1939-1942, he produced roughly 1500 works despite living on the streets of downtown Montgomery, AL + sleeping in the storage room of a local funeral home! Much of his subject matter reflected his life as an enslaved man and sharecropper with him often depicting farm animals + farm life!
