Winter Reading/Arting/Writing Tag

Describe one creative WIP project you plan on working on over winter
I always “plan on” working on a thousand things and then do none of them 😭 because I haven’t been in so much a “creative slump” as I’ve been in an iron gripped chokehold by hyperfixation for the last year, so on one hand I’ve been unable to focus on any of my original writing because it’s not about The Interest™️, and then on the other hand I haven’t even been able to write anything about The Interest™️ because the fixation on it is so strong, everything I write for it has to be Perfect™️ (and nothing’s ever perfect, you know). On that note, if my ability to write returns from the war and I ever get a day off from this purgatory of a job, I really really really want to work on this comparative essay about The Interest™️ involving analyzing parallels to a certain classic play, and looking into various aspects of the tragicomic structure and themes of identity and change. Also, God willing, I’d love to get one fic done, just one, please please please, I have a few winter-y or Christmas-y ones I’m dying to get my brain to sign off on despite my lack of free time, come on, brain, yip yip.
Art, same thing, something Christmas-y for The Interest™️, also I gotta finish some zine pieces.
As for original writing, would love to work on my untitled WIP about an astrobiologist and team of other assorted scientists brought in by a somewhat questionable facility to study an extraterrestrial artefact and being affected strangely by it, but it’s a bit up in the air plot wise. Would love to answer asks about it though if anyone is interested 😭

Definitely mentioned it before but:
Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds by Brandon Sanderson
“Stephen Leeds is perfectly sane. It's his hallucinations who are mad.”
This is like speculative fiction/thriller/mystery that’s hard to explain, but perfect balance of humour and sincerity, sci-fi and reality, and character and plot, probably my favourite standalone novel ever (well it’s really 3 novellas that somewhat connect and come together to form a novel, but either way).
Survive the Night by Riley Sager
Charlie Jordan is being driven across the country by a serial killer. Maybe.
This is a thriller book set in the 90s that as its title suggests, takes place over the course of one night, where a troubled, film-obsessed college girl (and unreliable narrator) who recently witnessed her friend’s murder (but can’t recall the killer’s face) decides to travel back home via a ride share where her driver may or may not be said killer, and has to, you guessed it, survive the night.
Now, this is actually one of Sager’s lowest ranked and seemingly most universally hated novels, whereas it’s the only one of his I actually thoroughly enjoyed/didn’t find mediocre and thought had a sense of style as I like the almost cinematic way it was written?? It was fast paced, it was fun, it had unique prose, and I think it perfectly captured the vibes of a cheesy 90s B-movie (said as a compliment).
Recommend a fic
I still cannot recommend From Out the Ocean Risen by Bluestar enough, it acts as a sequel fic to the movie Pacific Rim, and has some of the most gorgeously well executed cinematic prose and imagery I’ve ever read, not to mention impeccable character dialogue, and an incredible grasp on the balance between drama/angst/action/heart/humour.
What’s a Little B&E Between Friends by VoiceOfNurse is also a fantastic Pacific Rim series with a solid grasp on both character dynamics/POV and style. A fascinating, very humanizing character study, both angsty and fun.

Hey all! Just wanted to give everyone a bit of a content update.
I apologize for the lack of content for the past… year. I’ve been working through some stuff, and it’s been hard for me to find the motivation or inspiration to write. It comes in short bursts, meaning I’ve been (very) slowly chipping away at multiple projects at once. I just thought I’d update everyone on how things are going and make a list (partly for myself) of what I have in the works, what still needs to be done, and what you can expect from me in the future. Admittedly these are mostly obey me fics but I DO have other things tumbling about in my brain, I promise.
Opposite Day: 2/5 chapters finished, the rest 100% planned and around 30-40% written.
I’ve been sitting on an unfinished chapter 3 for almost a year now, and have written good portions of the other chapters in the meantime. This is the project I’m most excited to finish, and I feel bad for abandoning it for so long. Rest assured, I *am* still working on it, and am extremely happy it’s been so well received.
Untitled Simeon Comfort Fic: 75% finished.
Originally I wanted this written for his birthday (which was in February lmao) but as you can see that did not happen. I’ve got the beginning and end all written out, I sort of went off the script at the end with fun purgatory hall family fluff so the only thing I don’t have written is… actually the eating part. This will probably be the first fic I actually post, seeing as it’s the closest to completion.
“A series of Obey Me Vore Headcanons” Re-Write (Title Very WIP) 2.5/7 chapters re-written
This one I don’t think I’ve mentioned on here yet. I’ve grown increasingly unsatisfied with my original obey me headcanons list that I posted last year when I first got into the fandom. A. Because I hadn’t gotten very far into the story when I wrote it and didn’t get the full scope of the characters yet and B. (Most importantly) I feel like I really didn’t do the characters justice.
Since I originally posted it, there’s been a healthy amount of discussion on depth and nuance in vore media and reducing characters to tropes, etc. I’d like to re-write this series to focus less on physical aspects and “how they eat you” but rather more of an emotional and story driven story of why they eat you and their emotions and struggles that come with it. The obey me brothers are incredibly interesting characters, and I’d like to explore them in more depth and show you how interesting they can really be and why I love them so much.
This one might take a while to complete, but it’s gonna happen at some point. I‘ll keep up the original half-finished version in the meantime since I don’t want to delete it and ao3 doesn’t allow privating fics without orphaning them. I know it’s ugly in it’s current state, just know I’m working on it and the rest of those chapters will be overhauled eventually.
“Miss Em”: 80% written (kind of)
I’ve had this one sitting in my drafts for a while now. Originally I had plans to start another multi-chapter series but then Opposite Day sort of went to shit so I scrapped it knowing it was way too ambitious. But now I still have a mostly written Mammon fic in my notes app just sitting there and it would be a shame to just…leave it. I’m not sure what I’m gonna do with this one, Maybe I’ll write the Beel companion piece to it that I had planned and just leave it as a 2-parter. Who knows. It’s really cute, and I want to share it at some point.
Untitled Obey Me mini-drabbles: 60% written
Honestly this wasn’t supposed to be a whole thing. I started randomly writing one day on a burst of inspiration and it turned into little mini “scenario slices” for all the characters and I really like how it turned out. I still need to write for two of the characters and polish up some others, but it’s a fun low-stress thing to work on in between projects. Also excited to share it possibly soon since they’re fairly short and shouldn’t take long to finish (but you know me…)
An unspecified ITWOM fanfic: 0% written, 50% planned
For those who aren’t familiar, “In the World of Monsters” is an amazing novel authored by @vore-toast that just recently received a fantastic ending and epilogue (Please read it! It’s fantastic!) And I really would like to write a little something for it to show my appreciation. I have an idea planned out, but details would involve spoilers so I can’t say much. I’d need to ask for guidance on what exactly to include since the things I would like to write about haven’t exactly *happened yet* but I’ve said too much already… hee hee. I don’t know when this fic is gonna happen, but I swear to you it will. And if my original idea doesn’t work out, it’ll be something. I WILL be writing for this series, mark my words.

6. if you’re really concentrating, how many words can you write in a day?
it kind of depends on the scene I’m writing and whether it’s a completely new idea or a wip that I started a while ago already. as soon as I get a fresh idea and start writing it I can smash out anywhere between 1k and 4k in a single sitting. if it’s a fic that I’ve been slowly working on though, it’s harder for me to write massive chunks all at once no matter how hard I’m concentrating. I jump between scenes a lot so maybe that’s partly why! I’m also really bad at leaving the editing until the very end. I can’t complete the 1st draft before editing; I usually switch between writing new stuff and editing the old. that slows me down a lot and sometimes it means I can only write a few hundred words before I’m exhausted and have to take a break
9. do you prefer to write AUs, canon divergence, or canon-compliant fic?
my answer to this would change depending on the fandom I’m writing for haha, in previous fandoms I loved writing AUs but I think I’ve definitely written more canon divergence for steddie in particular because. uh. well. you know why.
I do still love AUs though! it’s so fun to experiment and figure out how to insert characters and ships into other worlds. I love it
17. what fic are you most proud of?
at the moment it would be into purgatory! I’ve always been bad at a) making and sticking to a plan and b) actually finishing a sequel once I start writing it, so I’m pretty proud of the fact that I managed to write this 72k mammoth of a sequel as part of what has been one of the most fun series I’ve ever worked on

"Dean," was all Cas could say before releasing his grip on his collar and gently, slowly, deliberately, kissing the corner of his mouth. A shocked gasp left Dean’s mouth of its own accord and he melted into Castiel's tight embrace.

On a trip to the dump to scavenge for valuables Dean finds Castiel, an Angel Industries sex bot, which is worth his weight in credits. But when he turns the sex bot on, he learns that Castiel is sentient.
Artificial Intelligence is illegal, and for good reason, but Cas doesn't put off dangerous vibes. That doesn't stop Sam from researching his creators while Dean's off making friends with the android. If there's someone out there creating a robot army unconstrained by the 3 rules of robotics, Sam's going to make sure the operation is shut down for good.
Castiel just wants to exist. He wants to read and work in the Winchester's greenhouse and have movie nights with Dean. But he also wants to understand. Himself. His unexpected reaction to Dean. What it it means to feel.
I started this fic in February 2018, and finished it in April 2019. As of this post, it is the longest thing I’ve ever written. And definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever written. You know that saying about blood, sweat, and tears? So true. (the blood was from a cat scratch when Kitty Cas tried to jump in my lap while I was writing and I got clawed, but it counts!) I am proud of the results, even if I got tired of it and cut out a bunch of stuff I wanted to do. 2020 goal is some timestamps!

This was a 30 day art challenge called Cottagetober, that I turned into writing prompts and added a 31st day since it was an October thing and I wanted a ficlet for every day. Writing these fluffy snippets every day made me very happy, and I think I might do something similar in 2020 if I can find a list that sparks joy.

Castiel has changed a lot in the 10 years since he was a shy bookworm in High School. But it seems like few of his previous schoolmates have grown up much, if the revival of the rumor mill as soon as he walked in is any indication.
Dean Winchester certainly grew up, though. And he seems far more interested in Castiel than the rumors.
Written as a prompt from @melilovesmakeup-blog, this little fic spawned much joy, and inspired a prequel from @bendingsignpost, which is honestly so dang flattering. I love this little universe, and I’m heckin’ glad I randomly decided to take prompts.

Another prompt! I do prompts like never, but I’m so glad I did and got this one. I had an immediate, and visceral need to write this fic as soon as I saw the ask, so thank you very much @alessariel! This prompt was for both of us! :D

Castiel Jameson won't rest until the outlaw who murdered his brother faces justice, and Dean Winchester is the only man alive who can help him track the villain down. Some say Winchester is a cold-blooded killer himself; others say he'd been wronged his whole life. All Castiel knows is that the desire glinting in Dean's green eyes is even more dangerous than he is. Castiel fights to keep his mind on business, but during the long nights on the trail with the dangerously handsome hunter he finds himself dreaming of yielding to Dean's illicit kisses and losing himself in lawless passion.
Dean Winchester is about to hang when Castiel saves his neck with his crazy plan. But dying might be better than spending day and night playing nursemaid to such an infuriating city slicker. He appreciates the stubborn detective's desire for justice, but he'd appreciate Cas a lot more if he'd stop being a lawman long enough to just be a man. He certainly has all the right equipment. Dean aches to run his fingers through Castiel's dark hair, yearns to know how Castiel's golden skin will feel against him. And before the coming of the next dawn, Dean vows to teach him the pleasures and sweet rewards of a Hunter's Caress.
I’ve had this idea since the first year I started writing Destiel fic, and it’s been sitting in my WIP folder since 2014. I don’t want to be done writing Destiel, but I’ve been struggling with my writing for about 2 years now, and I’m afraid it will only get worse when the show ends and the fandom starts to slow down without new content. I figure if I don’t do this story now, it’ll never get done. And that’s unacceptable, because this has been on my mind for far too long to let it never see the light of day. Of all of my stories, this one is the most For Myself thing I’ve ever written. And based on the way it’s going, it’s probably going to overtake Dreaming in Digital as my longest fic by the time it’s done lol

No, because my exam period runs through until the last week of November so... no time.

Only in tags of me going ‘huh. really should finish that Gomens fic.’ I’m also working on a couple original stories for which there’s nothing.
3. How do you work through writer’s block?
Listen to songs that Vibe, leave it for an hour to a day, or just force myself to put one word in front of the other until I get in the flow again.
4. What’s your favourite genre to write?
In fanfic, established relationship found family fluff; in original, sci-fi and rom-com (actually, I’m getting a sci-fi rom-com short story published).
5. Do you prefer to write dialogue or action, and why?
Oh, dialogue, definitely. It is.. way easier for me, and action always winds up feeling clunky with the ‘first he did this then they did that’ of it all. I think I’ve only ever read two stories with big action scenes that I genuinely a) followed and b) enjoyed. Description I do enjoy reading sometimes, and I enjoy writing it too, but I find it more difficult than dialogue.
6. Do you have any abandoned WIPs?
OH yeah baby. None that I’ve actually started writing for a while, but I’ve recently written out a plot outline to a H50 fic which is now sitting in purgatory.
7. What age group do you prefer to write for?
I guess 20-40ish but like. if someone reads it and enjoys it then they read it and enjoy it.
8. Are there any themes or motifs that show up in a lot of your work?
Fkn. water metaphors. I’m a fucker for them. Also, found family, finding solace/comfort from abstract trauma, is bantering a motif?

other than that, i’ll either push myself to keep writing since it’ll distract me from my doubts.

i literally found what would have been the hospital rich was at (it wasn’t a hospital, but it shared the name), figured out how long it would take to get there and back by train, looked up train schedules + ticket prices, and basically how to get to the medical center from one of the train stations there

A week later and you’re already buried in your work. The contents of your room have practically been shoved into the closet as you invested all your time into each little detail in each costume. You spent your days either working on small details while in different classes, spray painting shoes during drama, or scribbling in answers to homework due the next period (or day, if you were lucky), courtesy of Christine. If you had a chance, you’d crash on the small, cheap couch in the drama room for a bit, and then you were back home and sewing and (rarely) burning your fingers on hot glue.
It was hell, but it was worth it.

ok it legit depends. usually my first draft is the draft since almost everything i post on this account is a rough draft tbh (which is also the reason why i get so much writing done tbh)

i’ll usually rewrite something once or twice if it doesn’t stick the very first time. (aka this is what’s going on with control pt.2)

for my ocs that i don’t rly talk about here: i usually draw their personality, looks, ect. from a single idea. jaden came from me wanting to write a more bookish character. welton came from the idea of me wanting to make a gamer, essentially. sachiyo came from a self insert and evolved from there.
for the ocs that i put in my fics: i don’t really have concrete looks for them - you guys can imagine them however you want! sometimes i might reference them twirling hair around their finger or a tattoo or dimples or something - but for the most part, you guys can legit imagine them however. personality usually draws from what the reader needs, in a sense?

i have a Really old project called To Perdition and Back which follows a man named Carson as he and his team basically saves ppl from a sort of purgatory???
it would basically deal with his personal struggle. he had an affair with ivan, a man at his work who died during one of their expeditions - and the fact his wife is basically never there for him or his kids, which causes a bit of a strain on the family itself.
the tv show would basically follow carson + his team tbh? plus there’d be subtle hints leading toward the fact that (spoiler) ivan isn’t dead.
the plan is that the show also has representation tbh??? i’ll talk more about it if anyone’s curious.

I wanted to answer this from your ask directly, but it didn’t show me that i could do any formatting! oops! Okay, so you didn’t specify SFW or NSFW but i have both...and I’m thinking you didn’t mean to include anything A/B/O since that could be a whole fic rec in and of itself, though some of the stories actually have them shape change and all...
Also, i know i’ve read (and enjoyed) more than these (if i can find them, maybe i’ll do a second fic rec), but these were just the ones I could find on my bookmark list (and a few that weren’t, somehow, on that list but because i subscribe to the author, they were easy to find)
