A Swedish gårdstomte I drew yesterday. Trying to connect to the style of the late 1800 when artists like Jenny Nyström, Carl Larsson and John Bauer shaped the collective image of our fairytales and myths.
I was inspired to do this when I found two 120 year old original pen and ink fairytale illustrations at the secondhand the other day. A real find! And I even managed to find what books they originally were published in. More about that some other day.

Hello!
I was wondering where you get inspiration for your art from, if you have any at all, that is. I've never seen anyone with an art style even close to yours before but at the same time it reminds me of some medieval artworks that I really admire!
You're a very, very talented artist :)
Thanks! I get a lot of my inspiration from historical artists such as Gustav Dore, Durer, John Bauer, and Hieronymus Bosch, however my biggest art inspirations are Frank Franzetta, Samwise Didier, and (by far the largest of all of 'em) Chris Metzen.
I started drawing a ton of Samwise and Metzen's work from the old Warcraft 2 and Diablo game manuals, and the original 'Art of Warcraft' book when I was 10, and would flip through it while eating breakfast religiously until the binding fell apart. Then I taped it back together and resumed worshiping the damn thing until I started High School, and probably ran out of tape.
However, it wasn't until some time after I graduated college and began my career that I realized how much of an effect that specific habit may have had on my artistic tastes:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
... yeah. (The worst part: I didn't even notice his use of halos to balance the composition in his illustrations until I put this post together. I think I need to make some calls/get some help.)

biggest artistic inspirations?
i mostly like the work of ancient dead people from the rennaisance and earlier, as well as slightly more contemporary artists that are in that same vein. bruigel the elder, benedetto montagna, master l, giovanni battista palumba, various unnamed engraving and manuscript artists, etc. fairy tale and fantasy illustrators like john tenniel, arthur rakham, alan lee, brian froud, john bauer, michael parkes for more contemporary stuff. i would be remiss not to mention gay furries on twitter who portray the male form with so much adoration it would make greek sculptors weep. i actively try not to allow any particular source to influence my work, though, and for the most part i am not really a media enjoyer anymore

Has the world of Kochab been influenced by any legends beyond just “Ifrit is a fire spirit”?
the overall story arc was originally a take on Sleeping Beauty. :’) When I started writing, around the same time I also had a school assignment to do some vis dev art inspired the Aladdin fairytale, so that had a little influence. I also really liked The Firebird, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Hans Christian Andersen’s Snow Queen, A Promise Is A Promise, and fairytale-inspired work - like soviet animations The Humpbacked Horse (1947), The Fox and the Hare (1973), Hedgehog in the Fog (1975), and fairytale illustrators Vera Pavlova, Fritz Baumgarten, Ivan Bilibin, John Bauer, Arthur Rackam, Edmund Dulac. A lot of the webcomics I was reading & inspired by at the time also had a kind of fairytale tone to them.

Happy Birthday!! I love your comic so much, it's been so nice seeing it updating again! I guess if you want as a fun question, which of your characters has been the most fun to design so far? I really love Coal's distinctive hair and recently I really loved Hel's appearance (I hope we see her again someday~) so I'm curious which if any characters have stricken your fancy the most?
Thank you! Oh man, Coal's hair! You're a true TMK OG if you know where its inspiration comes from lol.
Designing characters is one of my favorite things to do, so narrowing down to a fave or most fun design can be tricky. But (speaking of tricky!) it might have to be Loki. When I first decided I was going to use Loki as a character, I was kind of worried. He's so popular and famous, probably the best-known character from the Norse myths even before Marvel's Thor movies were made. There's a lot of depictions of him so trying to come up with my own idea was pretty daunting.
A couple of things came together to help me create my own idea for Loki. One of them was John Bauer, an illustrator from the turn of the 20th century. I noticed a lot of his art used when looking at various Norse mythology pages. Some aspects of his depictions of Loki helped get my own gears turning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Images from: https://runeberg.org/gudasaga/
Bauer's style in general was another inspiration for me, but I remember looking at that left drawing of Loki and Idunn and thinking, "His eyes are pretty narrow and dark there...kind of reminds me of a shark...ooh what if he had black eyes?" That's where the "reverse" eyes for jotnar came from. The eyes of characters and how they define them have become a common motif in the comic.
Loki's clothes, particularly his tunic, are inspired by clothes worn by the Sámi people, though I'll admit I made up the embroidery designs. In hindsight this may not have been the most appropriate decision, but it was done before I even knew the term "cultural appropriation." I think my initial ideas were that the jotnar had a connection to the indigenous people of Scandinavia and the Aesir were more like colonizers. It's actually been argued that the Aesir/Vanir war that is mentioned in the myths is a leftover from a culture (the Aesir) arriving and conquering the locals (the Vanir). Neat stuff.
No one has said anything to me about Loki's outfit so hopefully it's okay, and I don't mean anything disrespectful by using it. When I was researching I was struck by their designs and wanted to use it somewhere prominent. The story doesn't stay in Scandinavia for long so there wouldn't have been many (any?) other chances to show it.
The colors for Loki came a little easier. I knew he would be a warmer character in TMK, even become a pseudo-dad for Coal and the other kids, so all his color choices are warm and earthy. He's supposed to look approachable and friendly--at first, anyway.
Tumblr media
I love all the designs for the characters in TMK, but I might be proudest of Loki's, if only because it was so intimidating to do in the first place. I think it worked out well.

"A quick image painted in Photoshop from scratch, not very religious or X-mas related, but somehow inspired by the Nordic culture where I live: Santa Lucia, the white Reindeer and the magical Northern light, plus a hint of John Bauer, a great Swedish illustrator who was a master drawing Trolls and tiny Princesses."

The Meeting
Sometimes when you are in the forest, doing mundane things like walking your horse, you run into the unexpected. Like trolls, telling you to get out.
This illustration took a long time to complete. I have been working on it and another piece since the end of January. I was very inspired by the trolls of John Bauer, a Swedish artist who has painted the most magical art. I was also inspired by the traditional everyday-dress that is local to the part of Norway that I am currently living in. And of course, I had to add a fjord horse, the superior horse breed.
This is a part of my ongoing series about Scandinavian Myths and Folklore. Can’t have one without trolls.

Hello lovely person! We were talking about fairy tale the other day and I wondered if you know agneta and the sea king? I love it, especially because of the John Bauer illustrations which give so much emotion to the king without ever showing his face (the church scene drawing!). Have a great week end and congrats on quitting your job 💕
Hi love! I haven't heard of that but I'll definitely check it out, I adore fairytales, they're some of my biggest inspirations for my style of writing and the stories I tell.
And thank you for the congrats on quitting my job!! I was so ready to leave honestly. It's kinda scary but now I can have space and time to think about my future 💕

Please welcome @piinfeathers to the CSSNS!

How long have you been in the CS/OUAT fandom?
I binged the show last summer and was immediately obsessed, this show has taken over my life.
When did you start shipping Captain Swan?
The second I saw Killian Jones, beaten and bloody on the side of the road literally 5 minutes after getting hit by a car, still taking the time to hit on a clearly annoyed Emma Swan I knew I was a goner. The finale of season 3 basically cemented them as my all timer ship.
What drew you to this event?
I’ve really been interested in collabing with another artist or writer for a while now. I think this show and this fandom in particular inspires some of the most unique and beautiful art and I really loved the idea of bouncing ideas off of other creators.
What inspired your topic?
Honestly? Colin’s pointy lil ears always make me think of elves and fae, and the fact that Emma is canonically a lost fairy tale princess, it just goes together so well.
If you would like to share a snippet/sneak peek/summary of your fic or artwork, please use the space below.
I’m really interested in exploring a more traditional fairy tale illustration style for this. I studied a lot of fairy tale art and folk art in college, and lately I’ve been super inspired by Scandinavian artists like Kay Nielsen and John Bauer.
For our artists: What kind of art do you like to do? Picsets, painting, digital, etc? Feel free to give as much info as you like.
I do digital illustrations! I work in animation as a character designer so my style does tend to skew a little cartoony. I think it suits the show a little bit, what with it being a Disney drama.
What are you looking forward to most about participating in this event?
I love the sense of community this fandom has, even this long after the show ended. I’m just excited to be part of it this year.
Steph will be dropping her original artwork on August 18th, and doing artwork for @mie779. Make sure to say hi on Tumblr and Discord.

This is a backpack (link at bottom of this description) with a walking troll holding a bag inspired HEAVILY by the Swedish artist, painter and illustrator JOHN ALBERT BAUER ( Born: June 4, 1882,  Died: November 20, 1918! The painting I was inspired by is called  "God kväll, farbror! hälsade pojken (1915)". John Bauer is quite famous when it comes to Swedish (or in general Scandinavian) folklore and fairy tales. Which artists inspire you right now?
oooo recently I've been more seriously diving into like.. vintage fantasy artists like frazetta, phillipe druillet, moebius.. that ilk! (I bought a book recently about them, it was a trash book, absolutely laughable as a piece of literature, never had a book that so strongly made me want to read This Book But Better before. But still it had a lot of wonderful illustrations and I actually feel the desire to Do Studies of the way these artists like.. used colour specifically as I try to nail in to what I really want my art to Be; or more accurately what I want to be able to Do with my Art)
But there's always the golden age of illustration folks like Kay Neilsen, John Bauer, bilibin, dulac.. and of course my modern fare like Hyde, Helen Mask, and Nemo (and many MANY others I don't have time to search out, nor would that be a helpful list sdjfhs there's a lot of artists on the internet.. and I'm not Great at keeping them All On Hand Always) but yeah, that's a little bit of the Right Now a little bit of the Always! I'm never sure if you can even See the influence of the things that inspire me in my art yet gdshasada as a lot of what my art Is came about from a very Technical place before I started really Exploring this kind of stuff, I can feel I need a great big Shift in how I do things again like I did waaaaay back in like 2011, but we'll see how it goes, change makes me nervous and changing your Art is Hard, especially when you can't 100% see the target.

The illustration shown with me, and many other images are available on magnets and postcards from my shop.  ⁣https://mistysworldboutique.etsy.com . Purchases may give me rewards. ⁣ Here is a 1915 drawing from Swedish illustrator John Bauer. It shows a prince and a tomte.⁣ ⁣ A tomte is a little creature from Nordic folklore. Depending on where you're at in the Nordic lands, they may also be called tonttu or nisse.⁣ ⁣ They seem to have taken their fashion inspiration from garden gnomes, as they normally sport white beards and wear conical or knit caps in red or some other bright color. From the description we can assume that the tomte is the one on the right.⁣ ⁣ They're solitary, domestic spirits who secretly protect farmsteads, and they'll even help with the chores. Just like old people, they value tradition and they demand respect. If treated well, they'll protect the homestead and animals from all kinds of evil and misfortune .... well, except for taxes.⁣ ⁣ But just like many people in modern Western society, they're easily offended and they have short tempers. If anyone offends one of these little spirits, they'll steal things, break things or turn things upside down.💥 I think I may have some tomte blood in me.🤔😸⁣ ⁣ Long ago, Scandinavian farms were very isolated, and during the long, dark Northern winters, the tomte was a companion to keep solitude at bay, even if he wasn't really seen. When country folk moved to the cities, they brought their tomte with them. They were kind of a valuable asset. A home without one could not thrive and the family may be reduced to poverty.⁣ ⁣ Tomtar (plural of tomte) didn't ask for much in return for their services, just respect, trust and on Christmas Eve, a bowl of julgröt with butter. 🥣🧈 That's a kind of porridge. I've never had it, but I assume it must be like a liquid cat treat.😋 ⁣ ⁣ Folktales say that tomtar will steal from neighbors to increase the prosperity of their own homes. If that's true, there may be some of these tomtar living in neighborhoods all across America. I think they're the "Porch Pirates" we keep hearing about.☠️🏴‍☠️📦📦

Welcome to my first full fanart made on digital, I'll be honest the image below is not at all coloring, cuz I'm still trying to learn that, just a base color layer I was trying to make. As for the characters, it's Gandharva and Teo Rakan from again, my latest obsession "Kubera", I just thought they fit the illustration I used as inpiration.
oh right, if any of you think the composition of the image is familiar it's because I took inspiration from one of the gorgeous pictures of the folktale "Agneta and the Sea King" from John Bauer:
