you know, in light of the Great James Somerton Callout Double Feature™ recently, it made me think back to when i used to watch James' videos. i wasn't an avid fan and never watched his streams or anything so i couldn't have any inkling of the plagiarism on my own, but this all now reminded me of one instance where he made a point of something in one of his videos that was so blatantly wrong, it made me wonder "wait...did you even watch the thing you're talking about?"
and that was with his video on the Owl House, because i believe there was a bit near-ish to the end where he's talking about the open queer representation in TOH, and at the time the video came out the show itself hadn't concluded yet, but he mentioned alongside the not only very canon Lumity as representation the show had to offer, he also mentioned...that the show was hinting at there being a potential romantic relation between Hunter and Gus????
and that had grabbed my attention and made me confused, because...no?? did we watch the same show??? cause if you've watched the Owl House not only would you know that Hunter was 16 and Gus was 12, which is really stretching it in terms of acceptable age gaps, but also...their relationship was not like that, and didn't have any sort of romantic subtext to try and grasp at. the way they hung out and interacted was much more of a "dudes being bros" way (silly headbump handshake, comforting each other in their insecurities and what people saw them as "weak" for), and i'm pretty sure even at the time the episode came out where Gus and Hunter officially became friends, Hunter was already showing signs of crushing on Willow???
so, in retrospect, it now occurs to me that the reason James mentioned that was not because he had simply misinterpreted Gus and Hunter's interactions and the shows intentions for them in the future, but it was deliberately James grasping at straws to shoehorn in some kind of MLM representation into the show where there wasn't any. and while, yeah, in an openly queer show, still not seeing yourself represented kinda sucks, but James Somerton is clearly a person who doesn't value anything in the LGBTQ+ community other than the G. he thinks being a gay man (especially a cis white gay man) is the only real way of being queer, or at least the most "oppressed" type of queer, probably because news media only ever gave significant attention to the deaths of cis white gay men during the AIDS crisis, and that is pretty much James' only point of reference in "historical events that happened to queer people" because god knows he didn't care enough to research and write on his own, let alone research and write about queer history involving queer people who weren't cis white gay men like him.
and it's especially shitty that he that he tries to force this idea of Hunter and Gus having romantic subtext right after he talks about Luz and Amity's relationship. i'm personally not the biggest fan of Lumity within the story of the Owl House, but the representation is really great, especially for something in a disney cartoon. so him trying to then detract all the sapphic representation that Lumity provided and even built the show upon with an MLM relationship that not only is weird in context but also never even happened?? the AUDACITY.
and what gets me even more is that, by the end of the show, while Hunter does end up in a relationship with Willow, it's not a straight relationship. it was confirmed by the show's creator Dana Terrace after it concluded that Hunter is bisexual and Willow is pansexual, and while yeah, real shame that there wasn't any actual expression of those facts during the show's runtime, it's still nice to know that they're queer, and thus their relationship is queer. it's also great to have a canon bi/pan couple when there's STILL an immense infighting problem between bi and pan people thinking that one of the sexualities is trying to erase the other due to their similar (but not same) definitions. so having them not only coexist but also be in love is great!
but you just know, you just KNOW, that even if James' video was made after the show's official conclusion, he would probably either:
A: ignore Hunter and Willow's relationship and try to play on plausible deniability that they're just friends since they never had any great romantic gestures like Lumity's confession and many kisses
or
B: make a shitty argument out of it that the Owl House "could have gone leaps and bounds further with their representation, but Disney was so homophobic that Hunter couldn't possibly get to also be gay, so he had to end up with a woman :("
and while i think both are probably just as possible as each other, my money would be on option B, because god damn it this man can't praise a piece of queer media if it doesn't somewhat center around or involve gay men, and leave it to James Somerton to try and project himself onto the white teenage boy and think that if he were gay, that'd somehow make the story better.
this man actively hates women, especially queer women whom he loves to pretend are actually straight women, and if he had the chance would still do everything he can to try and make a queer relationship between a man and a woman into some woeful narrative of "what could have been" if they just made the man gay.
god, from this singular moment alone where i had a very questionable opinion of James, the knowledge i have now completely recontextualizes everything. this guy is a plagiarist, a misogynist, but most of all, an internalized homophobe who replaces the word "gay" in the content he steals from with "LGBTQ+" and "queer" because he actually *would* just like to use the word gay, but if he did it would make it more obvious that he's plagiarizing, so he instead makes "queer" and "LGBTQ+" be synonymous with gay to make it look like he's actually being inclusive.
and i don't really remember much about his video about Korra, i don't know if i even watched it, so the only frame of reference that i have is what Hbomberguy said about it in his video, and i frankly do not want to go and give James anymore views he has not earned and will never deserve, but i think he did a similar thing in trying to grasp at straws with a potential queer relationship between Mako and some guy who i don't remember (i really didn't watch much of Korra sorry) but that also kind of was not the case of their relationship at all either, from what i've heard. at most it was just people shipping them, especially since the footage James Somerton used in his video was from a fucking ship AMV and not even from any of the high resolution episodes. so again it seems like there's an instance of James trying to shove in an MLM relationship that doesn't exist in a show whose lead representation is a WLW couple.
again i could be wrong, and correct me if i am, but unless there's a convenient re-upload of that entire video on another channel or even another video website, i'm not going to give James' channel any more attention than it unrightfully has.
fuck this guy.

For the ship ask game, Elizabeth/Darcy
Sadly, the long post that got eaten was my original response to this. It had a lot in it, but I'll do my best to remember it.
So! Elizabeth/Darcy is the queen of ships, the terror of the seas, the—yeah, I ship it.
1- What made you ship it?
I don't remember! I was only eleven. I think I considered Mary/Darcy briefly for some reason, but (properly) discarded it. I do remember that I really wanted Elizabeth/Darcy to happen from quite early (I thought Wickham was obviously lying), and partly because of that and partly because of missing things on my first read, I was genuinely surprised that Elizabeth refused him! I thought she'd accept because of her family's situation etc, and then they'd have to deal with their conflicts in marriage.
(This isn't an unusual fic plot, and I myself wrote a fic that was meant to lead to Elizabeth and Darcy having to deal with their issues as a married couple—though I never got to the marriage part—so maybe not quite as batshit as it seems in retrospect, lol.)
2- What are your favorite things about this ship?
There's a lot that I love, obviously. I love the youthful energy of their dynamic, even when it leads to mistakes. They really feel like peers. I love the sense of balance between them. It doesn't rely on everything about their thoughts, feelings, and actions being individually equivalent or even always similar, yet these individual things add up to put them on a par intellectually and morally in a way that is actually pretty unusual for Austen.
I love that they're both clever and truly ethical with a bit of an edge that makes both of them impressive, and both of them very compelling characters in general and together. Yet when they fall in love with each other, they're both rather silly about it.
Despite being borderline ace (and lesbian!) myself, I also enjoy the sexual charge between them. I think that, despite the restraint of Austen's style, it's pretty glaring, especially in the last third or so of the book.
Oh, and I love something that I don't always with other ships. They end up with pretty much everything they could conceivably want out of life, we're assured of their eternal gratitude for their marriage (this is the final line, in fact), they get ... it all. It's not all that common for me to encounter a ship treated so generously by its author, without it feeling forced or saccharine.
But it doesn't feel that way at all (for me). I think there's a reason that it's such a juggernaut in the fandom and people are often so ??? about alternate pairings. You can feel the favor of the narrative itself for them, the way it's so fundamental to the fabric of the narrative that nearly everything in it serves to further the Elizabeth/Darcy plot in some way, yet in a way that makes the novel feel rich and engaging rather than shallow. And at the same time, they have it all! They're smart and hot and good and in love and happy and will never have to worry about money or anything worse than minor inconveniences from extended family, they're going to continue to grow as people, they're—it's so nice and so satisfying in a way that's actually really hard to execute well and it's done so well here.
3- Is there an unpopular opinion you have on this ship?
Many, lol. Despite their immense popularity, I think in some ways that the ship is kind of a victim of it, because there are these inescapable pop culture osmosis ideas of them that just strike me as either reductive or simply wrong. I don't think Darcy is a brooding sexy alpha male romance hero or that Elizabeth is a feisty individualist woman ahead of her time.
I think they're both very much of their time, actually! Darcy is not old-fashioned for the time and Elizabeth is not ahistorically unique. In fact, I would like to see depictions leaning into them as products of their time rather than away (I know of a few, but it's not common in the way I'm thinking, esp given my preference for the 1790s setting).

👐, 💋, 💫 , 🍭, 🎈
Thank you for so many!!! 💙💙💙 (for this ask game)
🤲 what do YOU get out of writing?
I mentioned the personal and creative fulfillment in the previous ask but the other thing is the community and immediate gratification of fic writing. I do write original fiction too and I miss the feedback I get when I post a new chapter in a fic. It's hard finishing something up without getting to hear people's favourite silly little joke, you know? I'm weak!!!
💋 when you leave comments on a fic, do you want to hear back from the writer?
Hmm I don't feel especially strongly one way or another 🤔 If I've asked a question then I suppose I like getting an answer. And there have been a couple of times I've left an author multiple comments and not gotten responses and I do slightly worry that it's because they hate me and want me to stop commenting but I recognize that my reaction is ridiculous and entirely in my head. In general I'm fine either way and if an author isn't replying because they're busy and/or overwhelmed I get it and I would never want to add any pressure to them!
💫 what is your favorite kind of comment/feedback?
It's probably a cop-out but I really do like most of them! Yeah the in-depth comments with theories and notes on characterization and stuff are incredible (and I am hugging everyone who has ever sent one of those) but I do enjoy the simple heart emojis or "kudos!" comments too.
I guess the only things I don't like are impatient demands for an update (believe me, I promise I feel bad enough about my WIPs already) or when people are very critical of a character or call them stupid in a non-affectionate way. Most of the time the vibe is "they're stupid because the pining is so obviously mutual!!!" but in a fun way because we know we're reading an idiots to lovers fic so obviously the pining is mutual but sometimes the tone is off or something and it feels like a criticism of my characterization because Obi-Wan is not that stupid in canon so why am I writing him like that? Idk, even when my characters are doing something dumb I want their actions to seem rational to them and it makes me worry I'm not accomplishing that. I'm probably being too sensitive but those comments do make me overthink (even more than usual).
🍭 why did you start writing?
It's a bit silly in retrospect but I started writing obikin specifically because I'd been reading fics for a couple months (and loving them!) but it seemed to me that a lot of fics were about how handsome and amazing Obi-Wan is and there were fewer talking up Anakin. Which I do get a) because Anakin goes on multiple killing sprees and helps run a fascist dictatorship for 20 years and b) it's harder to write Obi-Wan pining over Anakin because of the power imbalance between them. Even I struggled with it when I wrote my one master/padawan fic and I made it extremely clear that Anakin had been in love with Obi-Wan for ages already.
But the first obikin fic I ever wrote was a 5+1 that could be summarized as "everyone thinks Anakin is extremely charming and pretty" and honestly I've never really strayed from that. I like to think there's more going on but whenever I write from Obi-Wan's POV I tend to go a bit overboard with the immediate attraction. In my defence Anakin is very cute.
🎈describe your style as a writer; is it fixed? does it change?
I'd say: not very poetic, lots of dialogue (I write dialogue first and fill in the gaps afterwards) and heavy on the POV character's internal monologue. I often struggle to describe what characters are doing and then I start making everyone shrug constantly to compensate. If I didn't find first person POV kind of annoying it would probably be a natural fit for my writing. I try to change things up occasionally especially if I'm writing in a different genre than usual but I feel like my style is still pretty consistent. But I could be wrong!

oh!! some notes about sweetest things --
-my mom swears by 'spicy food induces labor.' she insists an italian sub was what sent her into labor with my sister. (who was, Family Legend Says, almost born in the car. so maybe it did work?)
-klaus was early, violet was late -- my brother was late, by a day or two, i think my sister was just about right on time. i myself was, ahahaha, VERY early. I was imagining klaus was just a few days early, though.
-oh! sunny's as late as she is bc if I remember correctly, my cousin's granddaughter was about a week late? also we wound up babysitting her quite a bit and she, I'm not making this up, liked to try and chew with her nonexistent teeth on hard things. namely our coffee table. also HER mom tried the 'walk to induce labor' and it did not work.
-the 'citrus juice' that goes in gazpacho, according to the recipe we use, is lemon juice. violet will say lemon but bertrand will not. which in retrospect I'm kinda Eh about, like I guess it doesn't matter, canonically bertrand was out there making lemonade so it shouldn't matter, but......still kinda stand by it not gonna lie
-look at violet using a bread knife as an actual bread knife and not a potential weapon
-violet doesn't call the house the baudelaire mansion, bc to her it's not specifically a mansion. it's a house, it's her house, it's her family's house. so since it's her narration she calls it the baudelaire home.
-specific narrative styles or details for different characters is one of my favorite favorite favorite things ever. it's so good I love doing it, even if it's just in a really little way
-just, like........the way they all are as a family. existing as a family, before canon happens. how they're a little different than canon bc it hasn't happened yet. like I wanted violet and klaus to be polite and quiet kids but also. silly!!!!!!! because here they are still kids!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like to think they would be silly like that. especially with bertrand as a dad. and, beatrice.
-my personal favorite part is beatrice eating the cucumbers.
-oh i almost forgot oh no. beatrice calls bertrand and violet and klaus 'troupe' as a group nickname which i thought was interesting. like, as an actress, to have the perception of a group or a gang of people, and people you like, as a troupe. especially compared to olaf's troupe.
-the amount of people who have commented saying b+b's love for each other is so palpable and bertrand is so delightful fills me with such joy 💖💖
-the girl from ipanema is a banger 100%, so is the whole album. it's getz/gilberto
-why bossa nova?? well clearly I like bossa nova. it's a JAM
-this is the only fic I've written that I actually let my mom read, bc usually I don't ask her to read my fic bc it's just very tonally different than the things she likes (although she did read the first like 10 pages of babybea fic back when i wrote that, bc i was so worried about the pacing), but she also helped a lot with it and read the drafts so I wanted her to read the whole thing. she likes it a lot. thanks mom 💕

apparently this is a hot take according to some people I know irl, but I'm wondering if people around here also think so?
I think something being temporary doesn't delegitimize it at all. even if it's silly, even if you cringe at it later, if it's important to you now, it's important to you now. that's why I hate the "it's a phase" phrase because for me, the response to that is not "no it's not a phase; I'm going to like it to adulthood;" the response should be "it doesn't matter if I don't like it later; it's important to me now and I only exist as the person I am now." (to be clear, people pretending they can predict the future about whether you will/won't be something in the future is bad and annoying in its own right) sorry this is kind of abstract so I'll try to explain it as best I can ...
I remember a teacher talking to me about how he likes the saying "this too shall pass," whereas I'm trying to get OUT of that mindset. the problem is that "this too shall pass" applies to literally everything. I don't think this was the original intention of the saying, but the subtext is that you shouldn't worry about what's happening now because it won't be forever; essentially, it doesn't matter if it doesn't last.
but isn't that literally everything? I get nervous whenever I'm happy because I remember that yes, this is probably temporary, and if history's anything to go by, it will be gone very quickly. but like, so is your entire life. so is the earth, the solar system. don't these things matter, not because they're permanent, but because they're your whole world in certain moments? when you're a teen and you're into a cringey show that you grow out of later, that's still a show that's your entire world (and might save your life!) in that time period.
I was pretty sensitive as a kid (still am, just better at hiding it/bottling stuff up), and I remember having genuinely scarring feelings and thoughts belittled constantly. and emotionally, you don't start thinking that that should stop applying when you're older. when I was a kid, all of my ideas and feelings were stupid because I was young and people thought I was a girl and I had normal childish interests. but even as I've become an adult, I haven't let go of the mindset of "everything I do and say and like is stupid and I need to defend them constantly or not mention them at all." it's definitely gotten better now that people have given me external cues that I can be taken seriously, but why wasn't I taken seriously before? I remember watching this movie about a monster eating a child and replaying that scene (and thus the fear that came with it) over and over for months. it's kind of silly in retrospect, but I think the stuff that I would have that exact emotional response to now would be taken much more seriously. when I was a kid scaring myself with that scene, was my fear not real? was I not in pain? was that not important to me at the time? why did it not matter just because other people stopped being able to relate to it?
I just wish we had a more gentle attitude about some of these things, especially when it comes to things young people don't have control over. I remember having a really aggressive attitude about diet/weight loss culture right after I started ED recovery, and as dumb as some of that was, it was necessary and legitimate. if I could talk to someone in a similar position, I wouldn't chastise them and tell them they're being naive and that it'll pass; I would say, "I see you; you're in a lot of pain right now, and you need to be feeling these emotions. I remember what that felt like. it might not last forever, but it's important that you process and validate them now anyway." obviously that understanding doesn't go as far as excusing harm, but I really don't think that even applies to most of the stuff we cringe at teens for (no, designing a sparkledog OC is not killing anyone).
your past self wasn't a rough draft on a piece of paper that just became human yesterday. they were a full person with actual emotions in full effect on them. they're gone now, and other young people won't be young forever either, but they're still people right now.

For the Doctor Who Asks: 2.0 game- All of the questions! (Or all of the ones that you feel like answering.)
Okay, alright!
1. Why do you love Doctor Who so much?
I'm a big fan of sci-fi in general honestly and always have been, especially if it has a lot of media to pick and choose from and lore to sink my teeth into. Doctor Who is specifically very interesting as a time travel show with a rotating cast and media in several different formats which lends itself to perpetual change and creativity and you can revisit prior eras without derailing the current one.
2. Which Doctor would you most want to travel with?
Two or Three. It's no secret that I love Two, Jamie and Zoe so it is ofc a dream to hang out with my faves. Three is kind and considerate of his companions but he's also the realest when people cross him so I think he'd be nice without being Too Nice yk. I made a joke post about this, but he wouldn't beg the Master to regenerate after tormenting his friends and the entire planet for a year (looking at you, Ten).
3. Which Doctor and Companions would be your perfect Tardis team?
My fave canon team is Two, Jamie and Zoe (Though Five, Tegan and Turlough is also great) but a non canon team? Uhhh. Two, Jamie and Tegan could be fun because she's a strong personality like Zoe but also a layperson like Jamie. I've already said Jamie and Leela in another post (sensing a pattern but he is my guy), Bill could be great on pretty much any team as a true everyperson because she truly is just Normal. Like, the other TARDIS team members are arguing and she just says something that seems obvious in retrospect but nobody else thought of. She can just cut through bullshit frfr.
4. Would you rather hang out with Jamie Mccrimmon or Sarah Jane Smith?
Jamie. Sorry Sarah Jane but he's my guy.
5. Classic Who or New Who?
Classic. NuWho takes itself so seriously sometimes like it's trying too hard to be Mature™ and distance itself from the "silly show for nerds" reputation the Classic series got. I appreciate the budget and the added emphasis on emotional arcs but watching the Doctor go through the same character arc again and again and make a speech about how much murder they've done and how ~morally ambiguous~ they are at least once per season is tiring. This is why later One era, Two, Three and Early Four is peak Doctor Who to me. They're just a bit of a tetchy guy travelling the universe and helping people.
6. Would you rather be a Dalek or a Cyberman?
Would I rather be shot or shot? Hmm. If I choose Cybermen can I be one of the good ones like Bill?
7. What's your favourite story from each Doctor 1-15
Okay, That's tough so I'll give a maximum of 3 per Doctor.
One: Planet of the Giants, The Celestial Toymaker and The War Machines
Two: The Evil of the Daleks, The Mind Robber and The War Games
Three: The Mind of Evil, Day of the Daleks and The Three Doctors
Four: The Arc in Space, The Sun Makers, and State of Decay
Five: Castrovalva, Earthshock and Frontios.
Currently on Six's era and not familiar with Seven or Eight.
I don't remember most of NuWho well enough to comment rn (planning on a rewatch once I'm done with Classic) but for Tenteen (who shouldn't be a separate Doctor to Ten but whatever) it's obviously Wild Blue Yonder and 15 only has two stories which are both kinda mid.
8. Do you think any creatures have been overused? If so, which ones?
Yes. Daleks, Cybermen and to a lesser extent, the Master. The Daleks are a one trick pony, and their one trick can be done better by other villains. The Cybermen are interesting but aren't always utilised effectively/are overused. The Master is more versatile as a three dimensional character and a Time Lord who can regenerate and therefore, change personality but is still sometimes overrelied on where re/introducing other three dimensional villains would have more variety.
9. Who is your favourite Doctor Who writer?
Umm, I don't really have favourite writers? I have stories I enjoy but I don't really have a specific writer where I'm like "This guy gets it!"
10. What is your favourite piece of music from Doctor Who?
And if I say the theme tune is that a cop out? It's just so good.
11-15. Are about Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures and I've never watched Torchwood and can't remember enough about SJA.
Thanks for asking!

i know you don't like them but it seems obvious to me the direction initially was to have ba get together and then something shifted. like maybe ras decided they wouldn't go back to the present so he didn't need to build to the same place where he left ba last season
he never needed to build to that. anyone that thought they were going to get another ba proposal in the 50s were being very unserious, i'm sorry. and people still thinking that as late as episode 9 or 10 seeing the way it was playing out?
i definitely thought they were building to ba eventually, but also clearly wasting time and playing around because they didn't feel the need to devote any real time to the build up because they just had a whole season together. like even just deciding to go steady would be a fine end to their arc to bring them back to the present if that had been the plan.
but i think they were writing ba as pretty shallow and silly the whole time, so even though i did think it was building to their endgame simply because even if it was silly, it was still far more than any other ship options for them were getting, i'm not totally surprised that it's leading to an open ending. at least since they're staying in the 50s. would obviously be much more shocking if we were going back to the present.
also, while the course of the story has obviously taken a hard turn since 11, i remember thinking they stuff in 11 felt very anticlimatic after that many episodes, especially their first kiss, so again, a lot of things from this season make more sense to me in retrospect with them.

tsurune
My feelings on this one are a bit mixed. I generally really like the world of Tsurune. Super saturated bright colors, detailed lighting, and even little details like the generally realistic style combined with some characters having odd hair or eye colors, it's a really great aesthetic like you'd expect from KyoAni. As far as animation goes, well for a show where the character art is this detailed it seems impossible for it to move well, but there's plenty of good stuff even if the acting is more on the understated side. I couldn't really bring myself to care too much about the characters, even if I was at first shocked at how well the cute girls design philosophy of KyoAni could create so many cute boys.
The bit of the story I enjoyed the most was the episode focused on Seiya, which I thought had the most interesting direction of any episode, too, though in retrospect the relative suddenness of his crisis is indicative of the show's approach to drama. After that comes the storyline of Masaki in the car crash. I felt it was all a bit silly and kind of lent the last arc of the show this really strange confused tone, and when that transitioned to full-blown infighting and drama I realized how little I care for the way these moments are written. In particular, a lot of the misunderstandings and the reconciliations that follow feel very autopilot and in a way that doesn't even really make sense (why would Kaito think Minato trying to disrespect Masaki, this late in the story? Why would this kind of misunderstanding even happen?) And all that was just leading up to apparently a big breakthrough in the characters' relationships, where they call each other by their first names and point out the fact that they're doing so. There's a lot of stuff like this, where big character moments are usually forecasted in advance in an interesting way, but they bubble up and boil over very suddenly, and aren't allowed to just happen but instead are spelled out with over-baked platitudes that just kind of made me roll my eyes (Seiya: I'm not chasing Minato anymore, I'm walking with him). I guess there's a reason I struggled to remember any character's name.
The real star of this show is the music, which elevates a lot of these very generic YA moments and make them feel much more believable. There's some really sparkly pianos, lush strings, really everything you would want for a show that looks so bright, green, and vivid. Overall the OST lent a certain gravity to the show that I feel it needed. I quite like the OP and ED as well. There's also the bow shots themselves, which are great throughout, in the last few episodes become this tasty little nugget of an audiovisual experience, starting with the tsurune, the quick flight through the air, and then hitting the mark with a sparkly sound effect. I can sort of understand the whole point of this show just from these last few scenes.
Overall, as far as sports anime go I think the actual things I usually come to this genre for are mediocre here, but there are other strengths. Another thing I didn't mention is how gay it can be, which I like too, and it goes farther than the average male sports anime which can already be pretty damn homoerotic. There's a certain...complicity? in the character relationships that adds this extra layer of tension, especially Shu and Minato, where it's very hard to believe they aren't both at least somewhat aware of their feelings for each other, but also Minato and Seiya and even Minato and Masaki to some extent (both of those are one sided, I think, and the latter not that serious). Even if it's the safest KyoAni anime of the 2010s I've seen, the show is very polished and has a coherent aesthetic. I'm truthfully on the fence about season 2. The characters haven't endeared themselves to me, and I don't see anywhere interesting the story can really go now. That said, I did see some clips on Twitter of the bow scenes and….damn it, here we go again.

Widget Anon here again!! because I did also want to send in a request ghsndshbfds,, could I ask for headcanons for Athena, Gumshoe, Maya, and Sebastian with a very emotional s/o? (totally not projecting, shhhhh) like, they just see a dog and they're like "yes, my day has been made!!!!" but at the same time if something even remotely sad happens it's just straight tears (real story, was watching spirited away and when chihiro cried in the garden I started crying too hngfhdsa)
You know what Widget Anon, I very much thank you for this because now I can project as well, I COMPLETELY get what you mean and these need to exist so thank you for giving me the opportunity to make these Headcanons exist.
Also sidenote, Gumshoe is actually one of my comfort characters at this point 😭👍 I love writing for this man so much he’s actually just so cool, he is the OG Himbo in this series and he deserves everything good in this world, istg.
🎇Athena Cykes🎇
🎇First of all, Athena Cykes can read people’s emotions plus she’s really empathetic so putting her with an S/O who is also very prone to heightened emotions would make it more likely that she would also absorb those emotions so she’s going to be very compassionate and caring towards S/O.
🎇So whether S/O is feeling absolutely overjoyed over something that they saw that day or bawling their eyes out over a film or something that inconvenienced their day, Athena is going to be right there alongside them, picking up on those emotions and responding appropriately.
🎇Athena would absolutely strive to make S/O happy, especially knowing that due to their emotional sensitivity, when they are happy they are truly at the peak of positivity. So she’d make them lunch and take them out on dates and seeing just how truly overjoyed S/O is in those moments is absolutely worth it to her. If S/O did start to cry due to this kindness, Athena would be there for them straight away. She truly cares so much about S/O.
🎇If S/O wanted to return this kindness to Athena, she too would be absolutely amazed and would be sure to make the appreciation that she feels crystal clear to S/O (although with Widget’s habit of verbally stating how Athena is feeling, she won’t have to do too much in order to make S/O know how appreciated they are).
🎇On the flip side, being prone to more heightened emotions means that when something bad happens, no matter how inconsequential it may appear to other people, it can just really get you down. So if S/O had a particularly bad day and came to Athena on the verge of tears, she’d be so worried about them and would be quick to sweep them up into a tight hug.
🎇You can bet anything that she’ll do all that she can to cheer a highly emotional S/O up, she’d make them dinner, give them a hug while under a ton of blankets on the couch and put a nice film on for them that wouldn’t make them more emotional.
🎇If someone in particular did something to intentionally upset S/O, you can bet that Athena would absolutely tear into them, and if they refused to apologise she would send them flying (hopefully not hitting any bystanders while doing so). “You want to make S/O cry?! Take this you heartless fiend! Hyahh!”
🍜Dick Gumshoe🍜
🍜This man. THIS👏 MAN👏 (Mod Miles approves of Gumshoe very much and sees him as a comfort character 😩👌) He just gets along with everybody and is a massive himbo. I love him so much.
🍜He’s also very sensitive! But he’s also ridiculously loyal to those he cares about so he’d absolutely do his darned hardest to be supportive of S/O if they were very more sensitive to their own emotions.
🍜He’d absolutely make lunches for S/O every day with whatever ingredients he can afford on his salary (it's mostly gonna be weenies and rice) which is already going to be so flattering to S/O, however, if he saved up for a couple of months in order to splurge out on some other ingredients then he can probably expect to have S/O be so overwhelmingly happy when they meet up after work that evening. He can expect a massive hug and an even bigger bunch of “thank you”s!
🍜Another thing! Gumshoe is training Missile the dog so at some point he’d introduce S/O to Missile and it would absolutely make their day. They’d be so overjoyed to see this little Shiba Inu and would be sure to give him a ton of scratches. Fully expect to find S/O buying Samurai dogs especially for him.
🍜Of course though, S/O could be made particularly upset by something, maybe they happened to read something that upset them or watched a film or TV show that turned out to be really sad so they’d naturally go to Gumshoe in a pile of tears, unable to fully put into words what has exactly caused them to just start crying. They can expect to be pulled into a big Gumshoe hug. He looks like the type who’d be really good at giving hugs, he’d even take off his lucky detective coat and drape it over their shoulders if he thought it might cheer them up a little bit. “It’s okay pal! Don’t cry, we can talk about it later if you want to.”
🍜If somebody did something that hurt S/O’s feelings, he’d be pretty angry. He’d ask them to apologise (“pal”) and if they refused to then he’d get pretty frustrated with them and give them a firm talking to, he doesn’t care who it was that made S/O cry, he’s going to teach them a lesson! (If the person who upset S/O happened to be Miles Edgeworth then he can probably say goodbye to that month’s salary 😭😳)
🔮Maya Fey🔮
🔮Maya is pretty childish! Although she’s also someone who is fiercely loyal and who looks out for the people that she cares about. So she is the perfect person who will indulge S/O in positive situations and comfort them when something has upset them.
🔮Maya will do her darned hardest to make S/O happy every time she sees them so S/O will soon come to associate Maya with free serotonin. She’ll take them out for food (Ramen? Burgers? Ramen burgers? All of the above? Who cares!) and will be sure to indulge in their interests, although if S/O is also a massive Steel Samurai fan then fully expect Steel Samurai marathon dates at every opportunity.
🔮S/O might come to her one day and just tell her just how much she makes their day better and start sniffling because she’s just so lovely all of the time. Maya will be sure to pull S/O into a tight hug and tell them that she doesn’t plan on stopping because making them happy is her favourite thing to do. She might lightly tease them for being emotional but she loves every moment of it.
🔮It would be an absolute shock to Maya if S/O came to her while really distressed and upset about something. She’d be quick to drop whatever she was doing and just pull S/O in for a hug before taking them off somewhere private to talk about things. Whether someone had upset them or something that in retrospect might be a silly inconvenience had happened, she’ll reassure them the best that she can.
🔮Anyone that upsets her S/O will soon find themselves facing the wrath of the angry 5ft spirit medium and they will regret every minute of it. She knows when and where to pull her punches in terms of dissing people and she won’t spare anything for anyone who hurts S/O’s feelings 😤
🔮She’ll tell S/O that if they ever want to talk to someone who has passed on, she’ll channel their spirit any time (and for free 👀) if they just want to say their last goodbyes, S/O would definitely appreciate this if they had a family member that they never got to say goodbye to.
🔮Overall, Maya is just a supportive girlfriend who will do all she can to make S/O happy and will be there for them whenever they need her. Maya is best wife 😤👌
🎵Sebastian Debeste🎵
🎵Let’s not lie, Sebastian is probably just as emotional and sensitive as S/O. Their relationship is going to be built on the two of them building each other up and supporting each other at their high and low points. (Mod Miles approves of this relationship)
🎵He’ll do his darned best to impress S/O, he’d probably show off in front of them but would still be very surprised when S/O finds what he does to be really interesting. He’d appreciate that they don’t treat him like an idiot as well.
🎵Sebastian and S/O might go on a walk one day after work and if they see a dog while they are walking, the two of them are gonna be clinging to each other while trying not to freak out about how cute it is. They’d definitely talk about it all the way home and he’d just be in awe at how kind and gentle they are.
🎵If S/O and Sebastian watched a sad film, S/O might find themselves getting upset, so Sebastian would be quick in pulling them into a secure embrace and reassuring them (although if S/O looks closely, they’ll see tears brimming in his eyes too). He might start another activity with them as a distraction if it’ll help and then once both of them are feeling less upset, they’d probably talk about their feelings for a while.
🎵If somebody willingly upset S/O, Sebastian would probably get so frustrated himself! Seeing S/O being upset would be enough to trigger Sebastian’s own sensitive emotions, he’d run up to S/O bawling his eyes out just as much as they are while wrapping them up into a hug. If they happened to be sitting on a couch, he’d have them sitting on his lap while he cries into their shoulder and tells them that it’ll be okay.
🎵The next day, Sebastian would probably go to Miles Edgeworth to get his advice and support to go after whoever made S/O upset. He might not have the courage to do it on his own but if the person that he looks up to was there too, he’d feel a lot more courageous. “Hey! You-you leave S/O alone, I won’t let you hurt them. Apologise right now!”

Thank you for asking!
Hetalia Ask Game
What got you into Hetalia?
I honest to god don't remember anymore. I somehow must have stumbled over it somewhere and thought "Oh! An anime about countries and history!!! How COOL!!!" I remember that I definitely still watched it on some German anime pirate site called proxy dot to or something.
6. How has Hetalia affected history for you?
Not at all, if I'm truthfully. I've always absolutely loved history. Ancient history especially, all thanks to my mother. I wanted to become an egyptologist when I was in primary school, then an archaeologist and since I was 14 or so, 'history professor' was the avowed goal. These days, I don't exactly know what I'll end up doing, but it is definitely within the field of historical sciences and everybody pray my school keeps up its super cool Masters programm that basically qualifies you to work as a public historian.
Hetalia has definitely opened me up more to contemporary culture and a wider interest in the world. I love the manga for its tidbits still, even if I don't save them as genuine information lest I looked them up myself. And writing fanfiction really gives me an outlet for my curiosity and encourages me to learn about the world! I can apply knowledge to stories about charming, little characters and because I want to write about all the charming, little characters, I have concrete avenues within which to seek out knowledge about other parts of the world! I love it, it's really cool.
(Also, I did bring my Hetalia mangas to school and had my teacher read them. Luckily, he found it very funny and in retrospect, it was much less cringe than you'd expect.)
However - I think people who create historical hetalia content are very cool people and put a ton of effort into their things. But I do think that Hetalia isn't a very good tool to really discuss history. It starts with how you define a country. Is it the concept of a modern nation state? When do states start? What is the difference between peoples and states? Do they represent solely their peoples or also their government? To which degree can they act independently? If you asked me on how to write historical - or even contemporary - Hetalia correctly as an exploration of the world, I would have you write a clear definition of your terms at the beginning of each fanfiction. The same way you have to define the terms you're using at the beginning of a book or paper. This is the only way that the history then depicted can be correctly interpreted and analyzed by everyone who engages with it.
'But isn't it just historical fiction -' It is not, because historical fiction deals with fictionalized events and real people, not with personifications of entire countries. Difference. I do think though that both hetalia and historical fiction can be a great way to make people emotionally attached and attuned enough to something that they then start to care about the facts. I tell ya what, I don't care much for American history, but Hamilton got me into reading a wholeass Wikipedia article on the whole scandal. Historical fiction, especially if it's popular, does make its own statements regarding the past and the present and has its own stances, which then shapes public discourse. It's still art and needs to be treated as such and 'historical accuracy' often misses the point. But it is art and not historical scholarship.
History is very, very complicated and messy, by virtue of it being a product of human existence. Trying to cram that into a human being is impossible.
26. Who would be the one character you would love to meet?
Oh, hm, good question! They're all rather silly, though, aren't they, by virtue of it being a comedy slapstick manga. I could say one answer for solely not safe for work reasons, which I won't. But it starts with T and ends with y.
I think I'd like to meet Romano somewhere in South Italy. The man is so fretful and self-conscious in the manga, I'd just wanna show him that I don't think his self-worth as a country is tied to the economy. Find Salvini parassita grafitti and approve of it. Eat cannoli and Neapolitan street pizza and enjoy the place I love the most on earth right after my homecountry.
