Just a short thing about Sam being good at reading Darlin’

(Darlin’ is gender neutral and uses they/them in this)

Sam got really good at noticing when Darlin’ was upset. At first, it was damn near impossible to get an actual read on what they were feeling. They had spent most of their teenage years around David and Asher, so that was really no surprise. Both of the other shifters were incredibly good at reading people, so it seemed only natural that Darlin’ would learn to hide even their smallest tells.

Sam knew them, though. He grew accustomed to their usual mannerisms, their inflections, their expressions. He knew how they acted. Because of this, it became obvious when something was bothering them.

He came to realize pretty quickly that when Darlin’ was upset, they’d overcompensate. It was minor, a very subtle shift, but Sam picked up on it. Their smile would be just a bit too wide, their responses to his words a touch too fast, their emotions slightly exaggerated, as if they were trying to convince themself that they were real just as much as they were trying to convince Sam. They went out of their way to push back any negative emotion, and it showed. Darlin’ in their natural state was somewhat dour and melancholy. They would joke around at times, and they had a sarcastic streak a mile wide, but they didn’t giggle at his dumb jokes or smile at compliments. That’s not to say Sam would mind if they did. He would love them no matter what. It was just… uncanny.

Without fail, every time he mentioned their changed behavior, they would eventually explain what had gone wrong. Something had always gone wrong in these situations. As previously stated, Darlin’ didn’t act like this normally. They would talk it through, Sam would give them another gentle lecture about not having to pretend to be okay for anyone else’s sake, and they would curl up together and bask in their closeness.

Darlin’ was hard to get through to at times. They were obstinate, unyeilding, and there were times they just didn’t want to open up. Over time, though, as Sam chiseled away at their mountainous walls, they came to accept his support and even rely on it.

Sam / Darlin Headcanons

[In no particular order]

✩ Sam has stretch marks on his hips and across his back from growing so fast after leaving Mont Blanc

✩ Darlin has a high pain tolerance so they literally don’t realize when they’re seriously injured sometimes

✩ Sam has a lot of faded scars on his hands

✩ Sam is the oldest brother, Darlin is a middle child - they both had to leave their younger siblings behind and still feel bad about it

✩ The younger pack members think Sam is the absolute coolest even though they don’t get to see him very often

✩ Sam still has David’s name saved as Mr. Shaw in his phone

✩ Since Sam convinced Darlin to start eating actual food they are BUILT - their muscles aren’t super lean and defined anymore, but they’re noticeably stronger

✩ Occasionally when they’re stressed Darlin will shift and lay directly on top of Sam like a wolf-shaped weighted blanket

✩ Sam hates the question “are you a tea or coffee person?” because people rarely accept his answer of “both”

✩ Darlin was very uneasy about any kind of physical touch after Quinn, especially skin-to-skin, so they almost exclusively wore clothes that covered their entire body for about a year - they feel safe enough to wear tank tops and shorts now

✩ Darlin likes holding both sides of Sam’s face when they kiss

✩ Sam pretends to be more oblivious to modern media than he really is

✩ Before turning, Sam needed glasses - for a while afterwards he would still wear them out of habit

✩When shifted, Darlin is one of the biggest wolves in the pack

✩ When he was younger, Sam used to fight in shady arenas for some quick cash

✩ Darlin knows how to play bass

✩ Sam shaved his head after leaving Mont Blanc and after turning as his way of “starting his new life” - he keeps it fairly long now but makes an effort to keep it trimmed and maintained

✩ Darlin has convinced Sam to paint his nails with them at least once

✩ Sam looks like his dad but he has his mom’s eyes and her smile

✩ Sam dances like a tipsy suburban dad at a backyard barbecue

✩ Darlin has a habit of glaring like they’re about to murder the next person who enters their line of sight when they’re actually just thinking about what they want for dinner

✩ Sam was raised on a ranch so he knows how to ride horses, herd cattle, etc.

“What was that for?”

Some more thoughts on Darlin’s love languages and Sam’s HBS. Part 1 observations.

Disclaimer: I wrote this last summer so if all of this seems really obvious now that’s why but I’m just posting my drafts and I still like it 😌

(Also thank you to @darlin-collins for reminding me I wanted to write this when you reblogged that old Darlin love languages post of mine! I remember you said that you wouldn’t mind if I talked about it for hours and so I hope this and the next post serve you well <3 )

To me it is clear that touch is one of Darlin’s main love languages . In their relationship, Darlin’ initiated the first touch (besides healing) when asking to hug Sam. The first video with the pair in a non-platonic relationship, Darlin strokes their fingers across Sam’s chest and initiates their first kiss, whereas Sam clarify’s his feelings with words.

Darlin’ also does not hesitate in hugging Asher nor David when the contact is offered, instead eagerly using it as a way to receive/give comfort.

Which makes it all the more devastating when you remember how long they went without it/ how they used physical touch to harm themselves. The way that as soon as Sam asked if there was anything he could do for them in the video after the David debacle Darlin straight away asks if he could give them a hug?!?! 😫😫

Whenever Sam compliments Darlin’ there is very rarely a gap where they’d reply but there is commonly a kiss straight after. Which shows that they use physical touch to display emotion and communicate as well.

For example; Straight after Sam’s famous ‘you just feel so right, like I didn’t know it could’ and ‘a lot of things come easy with you’ lines.

When Sam assures them that it’s okay to rest and relax when they moved in with him, Darlin’ once again kisses him straight after and then proceeds to move onto his lap.

In Sam’s HBS 22 they kiss Sam (to comfort him) straight after he confides in not wanting to burden them with the fact he can’t go out in the sunlight (at 12:47) and straight after he compliments how they look (at 16:40, as a thank you).

So when Darlin’ kissed Sam at the nightclub to stop him from overthinking and he responded with ‘what was that for?’ It was a genuine question. He knows they use physical touch to communicate and he didn’t understand what they meant by it, since to him there was no comfort or thanks necessary.

And I just think that’s cute as shit.

Fun fact!

Darlin and Sam’s anniversary is technically January 9th.

In the timeline it says nine days after the inversion (New Year’s Eve) is when Sam and Darlin made their relationship official and said they loved each other and Darlin called Sam their Mate.
