There was an officer-involved shooting across the street from a school that was on lockdown in Mission, Kansas on Friday afternoon.
MISSION, KS (KCTV) – A suspect is in custody after an officer-involved shooting happened near Highlands Elementary School while it was on lockdown.
The school is in the 6200 block of Roe Ave., which is in the Shawnee Mission School District.
At 1:30 p.m., there was a paraprofessioinal outside with a student who heard what sounded like gunfire, so everyone was rushed inside and the school entered a complete lockdown.
Police activity then began in the area. At that time, the sheriff’s office said that there was a "firearms complaint" at the school, but no other information was available.
“All students and staff are safe,” according to an initial email from the school that was sent to parents.
The school was asking that people not approach the building. By 2:50 p.m., parents were picking up their children, but they had to be escorted by police.
Crime scene tape could be seen around some cars in the parking lot, one of which was a school minivan that had a window broken out. A school spokesperson said that it did appear a bullet had broken the window, but they were still trying to figure out where that gunfire came from. No one was inside the van when it happened.
Also, bullet holes were found in a wall of the school.
Police had been seen spending a lot of time at a house across the street. They found bullet holes in the side of that house, suggesting the shots came from inside there. However, no one was home at that time.
The officer-involved shooting happened after 3:15 p.m. in the 4600 block of West 62nd St., which is located directly across the street from the school.
Police said they had received multiple 911 calls from a woman inside the house they were at earlier. She said her son was home and armed.
Police returned to the house and could be seen talking to a woman outside. Things quickly got tense and police were telling everyone to get back. Parents, children, and staff were quickly ushered into the school.
Police had their guns drawn and were pointing them at the house. They yelled a name and told the male suspect to come out of the house with his hands up several times.
Then, the male suspect opened the door and could be seen pointing a black handgun at police. He appeared to be a teenager.
A KCTV5 News crew was close to the scene and witnessed an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and police. It seems that the suspect fired first.
The suspect appears to have sustained a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. His condition is unknown at this time.
No other injuries have been reported and police say all students and staff are OK.
Later on Friday, the principal sent out a statement to parents:
I wanted to let you know about an incident that took place this afternoon here at Highlands Elementary. No one was hurt during this incident, and everyone responded as we have trained them to.
The school was placed on an external lockdown this afternoon after staff who were on the playground heard the sound of gunfire. During a lockdown, all students and staff are brought inside, and no one is allowed in or out, until the lockdown was lifted. Both district and city police were called, and responded immediately, and made sure that students and staff were safe.
Once the situation was under control, we made the decision to begin our dismissal. We used our rain procedure, in which we walked students out to parents individually. While this was taking place, police at a house across from the school attempted to arrest a suspect and exchanged gunfire with the suspect. When this happened, we brought everyone back into the school, until the police announced that they had arrested the suspect.
I want to say again that no one was hurt, and that students and staff acted exactly as we have trained during our safety drills. I also want to thank both our local police department and our SMSD police officers for their guidance. This was a stressful situation, and everyone handled it professionally.
Also included in this communication is a letter from Julie Nelson, our social worker, with advice on how to talk to and support your kids during this time. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me here at the school.

COLLEGE PARK, GA (CBS46) An unexpected moving day created stress and confusion at the West Cove Apartments in College Park.
More than 70 families were told they had just 48 hours to move out with all of their belongings.
The lights and water have been shut off by the City of College Park. Many residents used their cell phones as flashlights to move out late Friday night, the moving deadline.
“They told us the water would be taken care of, that College Park was supposed to be coming out here Wednesday,” said resident Kisha Williams. “When they did come out here, we were served with that notice to evacuate in 48 hours…I have three kids, so to just like to kind of uproot them and move it’s been really tough.”
On the phone Friday, DiDi Bell, the regional property manager told CBS46 that a burst pipe sent sewage into an adjacent creek last Wednesday sending water issues into a downward spiral. The apartments were fined by the College Park Codes Department and the Environmental Protection Agency stepped in.
“Because the leak was ongoing for a few days the judge issued an abatement order and told us we had 48 hours to vacate the property,” Bell said. “It’s no one really at fault because the lines are old. So, that’s what caused the leak, it was a crack in the pipe,” she went on.
But, residents gave CBS46 several notices from the city showing the apartments have had ongoing water service and payment issues over the last several months. Many residents are angry this eviction comes right after they paid rent.
“Y’all already knew this was about to happen and y’all still took our rent money,” said Samiroe Ford who was moving out with her three children Friday afternoon, unsure where she would be going.
Bell says the apartment managers have been reaching out to several community partners to get residents into temporary housing hotels. She says, ”it’s a collective effort and everybody’s trying to step in and help where they can. We are going to make sure everybody is taken care of.”
Williams though is still not pleased with the short notice, and says this is not the first time tenants had to vacate because of water sanitation issues.
“We get notices every month when the rent is due. We get them through email. So, I feel like this should have been handled better than this,” Williams told CBS46.
Bell says the City of College Park is not actively assisting with relocating the displaced residents. An email to the city’s communications department was not returned Friday evening.
ATA Properties, which manages West Cove, sent CBS46 the following statement:
"Our property in College Park, GA experienced a sewage leak from a broken pipe under the lift station into the creek behind the property. Due the environmental hazard the City of College Park Code Enforcement and the EPA placed the property into abatement and a judge issued a 48 hour notice to vacate. We are doing everything in our power to accommodate people and have spent well over $30,000 to provide displaced residents with hotels while we relocate them."

ATLANTA, Ga. (CBS46)- Atlanta City Council is making an effort to track and monitor all scooter-related injuries to possibly add more safety requirements.
Zella Turner said she rode a scooter to and from work downtown everyday for months, until January 24 when she was thrown off her JUMP scooter while riding downhill on her way home from work. She said the scooter would not stop.
“I am absolutely sure those breaks weren’t working,” Turner told CBS46 reporter Hayley Mason. “That wasn’t my first time riding a scooter. I know how to stop a scooter,” she said.
Turner was thrown off the Jump scooter and sent to the hospital. She has fractured facial bones, more than a dozen stitches in her cheek, injured fingers and is wearing an arm brace. She is suing Uber over her accident and said she wants other riders to be thoughtful when signing the waivers associated with e-scooters.
She said the e-scooter owners will not acknowledge fault because of the waiver she signed.
“There is no liability on their part and people are assuming the machine is right and if it’s not then that’s a problem,” Turner said. “If I have an accident and the reason I have an accident is because your product is defective, that’s not my fault. I did everything I was supposed to do,” she added.
Atlanta City Council President Felicia Moore just filed possible legislation to track scooter-related injuries. She is asking hospitals and urgent care facilities to provide quarterly scooter injury reports.
“I think at minimum helmets are something they need to consider, and when we get this data in and determine the type of injuries, maybe that will the policy makers make that decision,” Moore said.
Atlanta emergency room physicians told us they are seeing more patients with serious injuries from scooter accidents.
“Initially when scooters started to become more popular, we were seeing about 20 or 30 a month and that number has gradually increased to now seeing about 100 a month,” said Dr. Hany Atallah, the Chief of Emergency Medicine at Grady Hospital. “We have seen a number of patients with some pretty significant head injuries, and we’ve seen a lot of patients with arm and wrist fractures and things from falling on the scooters.
He said they’re also treating more pedestrians who have been hit by scooters.
“If there are a lot of head injuries like I am hearing, then we perhaps need to do like other cities and say that you have to have a helmet,” Moore said. “In worse case scenario, if we find that the injuries are so significant and trying to find out more about how they fell off, we may have to look at if these are even safe to be traveling on our streets,” added Moore.
Moore met Turner during the taping of CBS46’s interview. Turner vowed to be at the upcoming public safety committee meeting next week at Atlanta’s City Hall.
Grady Hospital is about to enter a period of study in which doctors will count scooter-related injuries with specificity.
CBS46 has requested comment from Uber, they sent the following statement:
"We are upset to hear of this report and have Ms. Turner in our thoughts as she recovers. As soon as this was reported to us, we immediately removed this scooter from the JUMP fleet."

Data should speak for itself, but it doesn’t.
Learn to effectively communicate data to bring better business results. The most difficult work an analyst does often isn’t the actual analysis – crunching the numbers, auditing data integrity, or generating insights.
No, the hardest part is most often communicating that data in a way that brings action. After all, you can be the most talented analyst in the world, but if you’re not using that data to bring positive change, it’s pretty useless to the organization.
The truth? Learning effective data communication and visualization skills makes all the difference in making insights actionable…the trick is to learn to tell stories with your data to allow others in the organization to learn from them as well.
What’s wrong with my current reporting? As marketers and analytics, we spend all day looking at data. Your boss might not, though. In addition, if you’re shipping your data across teams and departments, a lot of information can get lost in translation. Insights get diluted – or worse, mutated – and you end up with no clear sense of what action to take next.
The standard reports in Google Analytics have their limitations. Even pulling the data to Excel isn’t entirely ideal. You can set up an API connection to a Google Sheet, but it’s still not as intuitive and interactive as a real-time interactive data dashboard in Data Studio.
Google’s Data Studio allows an analyst to customize a dashboard in nearly unlimited ways. You can pull data from Google Analytics, Adwords, Google Sheets, Attribution 360, and Search Console, as well as from whatever database you use. This flexibility allows you to build almost any report imaginable, tying in mobile, offline, transactional, and online data.
This effectively prevents data from living in a silo, or worse, a dark corner of the company where only talented analysts can access insights.
Democratizing data insights The result? With very little effort and time, you can create and customize reports for any business purpose to propel insights further throughout the business. Managers will understand your work with greater clarity, and appropriate teams can take action upon your work.
Essentially, you’re democratizing data in your company. This is what it means to be truly data-driven.
Past basic analytical capabilities, functional data communication and visualization is one of the most in-demand and requested skill sets. Making sense of data in and proliferating it in the organization will only increase in demand with time.

ConversionXL – UX And Usability Masterclass
salepage – http://archive.is/2lEeP
UX and usability masterclass Get a proven and hands-on UX framework to make more money with your website & landing pages. In this 8-class course you will learn how to:
Use user research tools and techniques to uncover usability and UX problems on any site. Implement a proven, repeatable process that will result in more revenue per visitor. Extract the highest value insights from Google Analytics, heat maps, user recordings and form analytics. Apply Karl’s 15 years of UX and usability processes, tools and tricks to your site right away. Karl Gilis, CRO Expert & Information Architect arrow-dn This course is right for you if…
You believe that your site or landing pages can be improved. A lot. But you’re not sure where to start. You have the ambition to grow your online business or those of your clients and you understand Rome wasn’t built in a day. So you’re looking for a strategy and repeatable process to improve any website or landing page step-by-step. You’re a business owner, webmaster, designer, marketeer, … who believes that online marketing shouldn’t be based on gut feeling and opinions. But you’re not sure how to gather those facts. You realize that tools are important but are never the solution as such. You want to learn to get the most out of them. And even more important: how to connect the dots. You understand that usability & conversion optimization are crucial to survive online. But you’re overwhelmed with all the information you can find online. So you’re looking for a hands-on training that’s build around the idea that the proof of the pudding is in the eating.
This course is probably not for you if… You don’t have any ambitions with your website. And you don’t care if you go bankrupt this year. You believe there’s a magic checklist with 10 tips that will make your website the best in the world. That list doesn’t exist. I’ll give you a framework and a hands-on process to make your website better. You believe you can make tons of money online without any effort. Once again: that doesn’t exist. You have to work hard. And improve your site every day. But thanks to the tips & tricks you get during this course you’ll know exactly how to do this and how to get results. You want more visitors on your website. This course is not about attracting more visitors. It’s about getting more revenue and sales from your visitors. You don’t believe in data but gut feeling and opinions. I wish you all the best. What skills do I need for this course? Unsure if this course will be a fit for your level of skills and knowledge? Read on: How long should I have been working in UX?
If you have a website and you want to improve it, you qualify. Don’t follow this training if you can only change the content of your website. You’ll learn a lot, but you’ll get frustrated because you can’t change a thing. If you have many years experience as a UX designer, you’ll probably learn more than you would think is possible. What programs or tools should I be familiar with?
It’s helpful to have experimented with a tool like Hotjar, or another click heatmap, scroll heatmap and user sessions tool. During the training Karl will teach you how to read the data you get from these tools. He won’t teach you how to set them up. So start implementing on of those tools (it’s really easy) and start recording data. Same for form analysis. You can use Hotjar or Formissimo for that. Just start collecting data. These classes are not about the technical use of these tools, it’s how to interpret the data they provide you. So if you start collecting data before this course and if you get familiar with the interface of this tools before, you will get the most out of the trainings. What books or resources should I be familiar with?
Karl recommends reading Don’t Make Me Think to get in the right mindset. What would make a student overqualified for this course?
Karl gives similar trainings at digital agencies and they always admit they learned a lot. + 5 years experience as a conversion or usability specialist who has hands-on experience based on user research. Not someone who has mainly read many articles about the subject. Video: What will this course cover? spaceplay / pause qunload | stop ffullscreenshift + ←→slower / faster ↑↓volume mmute ←→seek . seek to previous What you’ll walk away with afterwards The right mindset to be really (and I mean really-really) customer-centric. From now on you’ll be able to sell how people want to buy. Instead of selling the way you want to sell, as you’re doing now. A proven process and methodology that allows you to identify the weak spots of any website or landing page. An in-depth knowledge of how to get useful insights out of the most important (and affordable) user research tools and methods available. Without spending ages staring at boring graphs and numbers. An incredible amount of tips, tricks and guidelines to convert your visitors into customers. Yes, believe me: it’s incredible. See what I did there? The knowledge & confidence to improve your website and landing pages, even when you don’t have enough visitors to do ab-testing. Get more revenue from the same amount of visitors CXL Institute brings you an intensive online training course led by world renowned UX and usability expert, Karl Gilis. Throughout the course, you’ll: See exactly how Karl improves the usability and revenue of websites & landing pages during 8 live video sessions plus Q&A: During the first 4 sessions he’ll show you how to use user research tools and techniques to uncover usability and UX problems. So you know how to get the most out of them. The last 4 sessions Karl shares the best UX tips & tricks he learned the past 15 years. So you can solve the problems on your site and turn those visitors into customers. Why Karl? According to PPC Hero Karl is the 3rd most influential Conversion Rate Optimizer worldwide. He’s also the G in AGConsult, a Belgium-based usability and conversion optimization company. He’s been optimizing websites since 2001. Always based on user research & facts.
Karl is a top rated international speaker (he was voted 2nd best speaker at Digital Elite Camp). He teaches at several university colleges in Belgium. And has trained people from companies such as TUI, Thomas Cook, Suzuki, Toyota and Atlas Copco.
In his spare time, Karl is working on a cure for people who think online marketing is based on gut feeling and opinions.
He’s also known as the ‘UX comedian’, but he has promised to be dead serious during this course. Not.
Why we hand-selected Karl to teach this course
An energetic and fast paced presentation full of practical conversion advice and hilarious jokes. We were laughing whilst learning! What more could we ask for?
Chris Kershaw, eCommerce Advisor @ Sweden
You can use this immediately. After all the very average workshops and trainings I followed, Karl really gave me a good feeling. Very actionable, funny and lots of new things.
Michael Djalti, Marketing & Sales @ CGK-Group
Your class curriculum UX AND USABILITY
Class 1
Class 1: Leave Your Ego at the Door and Find Out What Your Visitors Want If I’ve learned anything over the past 15 years, it’s that most websites fail due to ego. Companies big and small put themselves first instead of putting their users first. Often without even realising it. Do you talk about what you think customers want? Or do you know what they want?
Class 2

Class 1: Leave Your Ego at the Door and Find Out What Your Visitors Want If I’ve learned anything over the past 15 years, it’s that most websites fail due to ego.
