Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girl found dead in a hidden room.
[First] Prev <–-> Next
#poorly drawn mdzs#mdzs#lan xichen#jin guangyao#jiang cheng#wei wuxian#qin su#EDIT: Tumblr published an earlier draft with only half the notes I wrote so: late entry on my JGY thoughts.#Unlike the mystic powers of the stockmarket (what the OG meme is referring to) I think this situation calls for more active investigation.#qin su is such a deeply tragic character to me and I really wish we got a bit more from her.#Love everyone who sent me messages about her after the last time she appeared.#I think she needs a spin off of her being a transmigrator SO badly.#MDZS has so many interesting characters - but it sometimes fails to give them the proper room to really develop past a role in the plot.#That's just the consequence of writing a story like MDZS. Not every character in a book *needs* to have a rich inner life and backstory!#To do so would bog down the story and obliterate any notion of pacing. It's just not possible.#Jin Guangyao (nee Meng Yao) is unfortunately not free from this leeway rule. He is the culprit of this murder mystery plot#and thus NEEDS to encapsulate the themes of the book. And personally he's a 7 out of 10 at best on this front (in the AD).#MDZS is about rumours twisting reality and working towards truth. And about how people & situations are rarely ever black & white#JGY has his motivations. He's well written in regards to his actions making sense for his character.#What started as good traits (drive to succeed & improve his image) became twisted over time (do anything to maintain his image)#and it's a good parallel to WWX! He has the same arc (with different traits)! Bonus points for IGY in that regard.#but man....by the time we confront this guy for murder there's not a lot of grey morality. He's just...deep in the hole *he* dug.#There's a beautiful tragedy to it! More on JGY in later comics - this is getting pretty long already!

[21 April - Taurus]
Janusz Bodanowicz is our fun-loving mechanic and ride-or-die supporter of his lover, Nate Prince. Whether a singer in a choir as a side character, or the main love interest and alpha companion in Underline the Blue, Janusz' upbeat approach to life matched with his high capacity for empathy and intelligence, has made him a rockstar, especially when up against characters who are struggling against trauma.
Tumblr media
'I want you. I want you. I'm not walking away. I'm not going to walk away from you, Nate. I'm not going to leave you somewhere. I'm not going to make you leave if you don't want to leave. I want to look at you. I want to talk to you. I want to hear everything you have to say. I want to read your poetry. I want to help you. I want to be there for you, and hold you, and make your pain go away. I want to help you. I want to go on long drives with you. I want to sit on the beach with you, and watch sunsets with you, and tell you about my day, and listen to you about your day. I want you, Nate, I promise.'
Underline the Blue
Tumblr media
Falling Falling Stars: Janusz first appears as a member of a queer choir that Efnisien joins. He's the tall, cheerful, friendly boyfriend of the sour and off-putting Nate Prince. Helpful without being a pushover, upbeat without being naive, Janusz navigates Nate's and Efnisien's difficult chemistry with ease.
Tumblr media
Underline the Blue: Janusz steps up to be the main character as an alpha companion assigned to a shattered omega, Nate Prince. In Underline the Blue, Janusz gave up being a mechanic to help omegas become genuinely healthier, but he's not prepared to deal with the level of abuse Nate has suffered through, and becomes determined to do all he can to help Nate through the hell he's going through, falling in love along the way.
Tumblr media
29 years old (at least in Underline the Blue) with dark brown hair in an Ivy League crew cut, and grey eyes. He often wears stubble, but not a beard. He's tall (and is often taller than many alphas in Blue) but lanky.
Pragmatic and insightful, Janusz often deliberately picks cheerfulness as a way of orienting to the world, and is fully aware that some people can find it grating. He's a lot more intelligent than many people give him credit, and he prefers it that way.
In Underline the Blue, Janusz wanted to be a mechanic, but his parents made him do a university degree first. He ended up - on a whim - choosing omega theory and ended up extremely invested in omega activism. He was selected to work at Hillview Rehabilitation Facility due to his exceptionally high capacity for empathy, and his ability to quickly 'access' the mindsets of most omegas.
Prior to Nate, every omega that has stayed with Janusz has graduated within about 3-9 months, which gives him the fastest track record in Hillview's history.
He is supervised by Temsen Ohlo Ohlo
He's aware of kink and BDSM practices
Tumblr media
In Falling Falling Stars, Janusz chides Nate for being petty and childish, when they're all spending time together at a sushi train. As a result, Nate apologises and softens slightly, and this allows them to continue to stay connected.
In Underline the Blue, (this one currently has only happened in early access - chapter 15) Janusz takes on Temsen, and Hillview, calling him out for doing a terrible job and representing an institution that - in that moment - has utterly failed both Nate and Janusz. Temsen, recognising that Janusz is right, yields immediately, and says nothing, leaving Janusz to bridal carry Nate out of the medical suite, representing a big turning point in his relationship with Nate and with Hillview.
Tumblr media
In all stories so far, Janusz is always with Nate, and Nate is always recovering from PTSD. That might change one day, but so far that's followed through!
Janusz' personality has stayed the same. Honestly, almost nothing needed to change transferring his personality from Falling Falling Stars to Underline the Blue. As a result, I see Underline the Blue as a more exaggerated telling of the foundational story that is hinted at in Falling Falling Stars.
Janusz is an adept mechanic and loves fixing up cars, as well as going on long drives. The only part about this which has changed is that in Blue he's no longer being paid for it.
Tumblr media
Janusz and Nate were originally envisaged as a real life manifestation of the 'someone will die...' 'of FUN!' meme. But as I continued to write Janusz, he developed into a fully formed character who is mature, intelligent, and lives a goofier life because it makes him happier to do so. He's a lot more insightful than he sometimes seems, and is happy to seem less well-informed while he gathers information. He can be calculating, and what seem like spontaneous decisions are often thought out well in advance.
His surname Bodanowicz should be spelled Bogdanowicz, but as he's the child of Polish immigrants, his surname was Anglicised to be 'easier' to spell. He has always found this hilarious because the 'wicz' still throws people off anyway.
He loves baking, and is very good at it.
Tumblr media
'The truth is that my parents were really strict about me going to university. They wanted me to have the education they didn't, and university is important in like…my extended family. I was all for becoming a mechanic, ready to get an apprenticeship and drop out of school, and my parents put their foot down and said if I really wanted to be a mechanic, I could do it after a degree. And being the mischievous shit that I am, I decided to go into Omega Theory so I could become a companion and fuck hot omegas.'

big huge alien sophant species
the secondchildren are a deeply enigmatic species of plasma-based energy creatures. their existence is colonial, and their bodies consist of thousands of different conciousnesses acting as a singular entity. these bodies often exist in a state of energetic flux, but by sharing strong memetic energy, each component of a secondchild can carry memories and experiences for an incredibly long time. for this reason, they're largely seen as functionally immortal. secondchildren are known for their high latent will energy, their advanced useage of will-energy technology, and their incredibly elusive and nonsensical nature. much of the will=energy technology used in my setting was developed by secondchildren.
the e-kuri are an incredibly hardy species living on a massive cold moon. the pressure on this moon is so immense that their carbon outer shell has flakings of pure diamond in it. and because of this, they are known for their incredible strength and speed in lower pressure environments. on-moon, they're grazers feeding off of small creatures which live in little holes, using their long tongues and fanlike limbs to disturb potential prey. societally, they have little interest in astrotravel and largely mind their own business - they're not very social. a long time ago, it was posed that their incredible strength could be used as a sort of biological generator if harnessed, but the morality of this idea was very questionable. their underside is soft and fluffy.
the fleu are an incredibly rare species of deep-sea creatures living under the thick ice ocean of a starless planet. their numbers are in the thousands, and they take an incredibly long time to reach maturity. very little is known about them due to this. any attempts at contact has largely been met with aggression, but its generally agreed on that fleu have complicated and intricate technology, even if the purpose and form of such technology largely remains a mystery.
the large blue form of a secret senmin is actually a sort of external flying lung, their "true body" is the colorful protusion at the top there. the lung is used to float freely through the thick atmosphere of the several large gas giants they call home. they communicate through rapid electric color changing and quivering of the various "limbs" of this body. they're known for being intelligent, curious, and very social, and they've figured out a way to store enough food and energy to traverse small sections of atmosphereless space without use of large ships.
magma lovers live in magma, as their names suggest. their bodies are protected by a thick glass layer over a metallic shell. even less is known about them due to the hostility of their living conditions to other types of life. it's known that they live in some sort of structured society, though.
oo3o and onri-semphimin are similar in that the largest political institutions of both species are ICDCI members, and therefore they're pretty common to see in multi-species living areas. o-s'es are semiaquatic, while oo3os are entirely aquatic, living near the surface. oo3o are a largely asocial species with communities largely just consisting of a few individuals, and they're talented builders. they've developed all sorts of "airwalking" suits to travel onto land and isolate themselves further. meanwhile, o-s'es are very social and live in extremely large colonies. They're adepts at terraforming.
e-bupp are metal worms that live in a sort of puddinglike-texture "oceans" on the same moon that e-kuri originate from. these strange oceans are actually the focus of much of the biodiversity on this moon, and e-bupp have taken on a sort of parental role towards the younger (in species terms) and less technologically adept e-kuri. e-bupp attempted astral travel, but the logistics of it made it more trouble than it was worth.

A long time ago, I also used to believe the lie that "Chinese culture is gone", but that simply isn't true. The thing is, a lot of older Chinese people still practice it, and it's definitely not for show. People still believe in certain things. For example when my paternal grandfather passed away, he wasn't rushed home from the hospital in time, so he died at the hospital. Seems normal for modern circumstances, right? But ever since then there's been worried talks among other family members, they said he's cursed to become a wandering lost ghost, and this is all because he died away from home. I was a little surprised to hear this, because the "general consensus", even among Chinese people in China, is that "traditional culture is gone in cities, only remnants remain in rural areas", but my entire family is made up of city-folk, and we've been city-folk for as long as the city existed (we are natives). When they told me my grandfather would become a wandering ghost, it's not a metaphor, nor is it simply a nod to the culture. They meant what they said, and they believed in what they said. The culture is alive.
Also just in this case alone, I suppose this is part of the meaning of "fallen leaves should return to the root" (落叶归根). Most (younger) people nowadays understand it by its "metaphorical" meaning, that it means we are deeply connected to where we come from, but there is so much more to this. This is a belief that concerns life after death, people believe in it because they are concerned about what their existence after death will be like, almost like how Christians are concerned about whether they will go to heaven or hell. Of course that doesn't mean the "metaphorical" meaning is a modern invention; it's only the result of a "meta" analysis of the "why" and is still rooted in traditions.

Gabi is the 13th angel, they're considered the weakest of all angels among their peers. They stand out in their appearance with bright blonde hair as well as rather feminine body and lack of halo above their head. (Wiki has a feminine body, but she changes her body to look like that and dyes her her hair red, after she meets Lucy, She's transgender) They have wings and black eyes like the rest of angels though.
Gabi was sent to earth to interfere with Siko to prove themselves as a worthy and capable angel. And to stop what she is creating. The angels are not very fond of that, but they are not too concerned with it to send one of the main 12 angels. One of the angels oversee them but they dont reveal their identity nor do they help or guide them.

here’s two of my bg3 characters, my cute lil bardlock and my absolutely miserable resist-the-urge durge - they’re the ones i have ongoing playthroughs of. aislinn’s about to leave for the city, durge is heading towards the goblin camp, their sheets reflect where they’re at. i’ll make these for my evil durge and impulse whenever i replay them! and remake them for these two when i finish their playthroughs. and draw something, eventually...

Day 26 - Last
Rael and A'viloh had just returned to the Waking Sands from their first shared mission for the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and left the Solar after speaking to Minfilia, when they had an unexpected encounter.
Rael wanted to stock up on a few things and A'viloh decided to accompany them down to the common room when suddenly a voice called out for him from the other side of the room.
"A'viloh?", a Miqo'te stepped towards him and eyed A'vi incredulously. "I can’t believe it’s you! I heard the Scions talk about a recruit with your name but couldn’t imagine it would really be you!"
The man caught A'viloh off guard. He looked a good bit older than A'vi, had dark hair and wore an eyepatch over his left eye. A'viloh was sure that he had never seen him before in his whole life, so the fact that the man seemed to know him was pretty confusing.
"I’m sorry.", he said shyly. "Do we know each other?"
The man laughed at A'viloh’s reaction. "No, I am sorry! Of course you don’t remember me. When we left for Gridania you were only a few months old…"
A'viloh‘s thoughts were racing but he still hadn’t managed to connect the dots, so he just stared at him quizzically.
"Sorry, sorry…", the man laughed. "Let me explain. My name is A'aba. I‘m from the Antelope-Tribe from the South Shroud. You know you were born there, don’t you?"
A'viloh nodded slowly. "I know but I can’t remember anything of the place... Wait, this means you knew my parents?"
"Knew your parents?", he repeated with a chuckle. "Your father, A'vanoh, he's my uncle."
"Your uncle?… then you are my cousin??", A'vi asked in surprise.
"Yes! I recognised you immediately. You look exactly like your mother! Just like Temi!"
This confused A'viloh. He certainly did remember that his mother had long red hair and green eyes just like him but her name hadn’t been Temi. "My mother’s name was A‘tahja.", he retorted with furrowed brows
"Yes.“" A'aba nodded not seeing the contradiction.
"But then who‘s Temi?", A'vi asked.
Now it was A'aba‘s turn to look surprised. "You don’t know about her? I can’t believe your parents never mentioned her."
A'viloh shook his head.
"My father was an adventurer and worked in Gridania a lot. He took her and me to the city for training when we were thirteen years old, shortly after you were born, so it makes sense that you can’t remember A'temi.", A'aba explained. "But I thought your parents would have told you that you have an older sister."
A'viloh gasped. "A sister??" He felt like a chocobo had kicked him in the guts. "A living older sister?"
He needed to sit down. He remembered that he had an older brother and a younger sister but both of them had died the day their parents and the others had been murdered.
"I can’t promise she‘s still alive but the last time I saw her she was fine. After Carteneau we went separate ways, I decided to join the Scions but she wanted to see the world. So she took a ship to Old Sharlayan instead."
"Old Sharlayan…", A'viloh repeated absentmindedly, still processing the information that he may still have a sister.
"But how did you end up here, A'viloh. When we heard that the tribe had split up and left the Shroud we went looking for your parents but you were long gone. We found a small group of remnants from our tribe in La Noscea but they told us that your parents had left the Shroud towards the South, towards Thanalan. However we couldn’t find any trace of them there…"
A'viloh nodded. "I think we lived in Wellwick Wood for a while but then moved further to the South."
"To Southern Thanalan? We never expected you would have traveled so far! Why would you? There’s nothing out there but sand. Maybe we gave up too soon…", A'aba explained.
A'viloh shook his head. "I don’t know for sure what father hoped to find there. Maybe he had tried to reach the sea or go to Ul'dah and got lost on the way. We should probably have stayed at Wellwick Wood."
"Maybe we would have found you then but on the other hand the Calamity would probably have killed you there…", A'aba pondered.
A'viloh sighed deeply and looked to the ground. "They didn’t live to see the Calamity. We were attacked by Amalj'aa in Southern Thanalan. I’m the only one who survived…"
"Oh!", A'aba exclaimed but then nodded slowly. "I‘m sorry to hear that… but, to be honest, we already feared something like this might have happened. Otherwise we would never have stopped looking for you..."
"I don’t think that would have made a difference.", A'viloh offered to comfort him. "You probably wouldn’t have found us in time. I was only five years old then."
The other Miqo'te looked more shocked than comforted at that. "So young? What happened to you then? How come you're here now? Please, tell me everything."
They sat down and A'viloh started to explain, from the first things he could remember as a child until how he grew up at the Forgotten Springs. He left out Laqa and their unfortunate watery detour though, and skipped right to going to Ul'dah. Alone the thought of all of that still was very unpleasant to him, much less talking about it…
"I‘m so glad that you're alive and that I found you. It's good to finally know what happened after we left. A'temi would be so happy, if she could see you now!"
"A'temi…", A'viloh said silently, testing how her name sounded in his voice and how it made him feel. Tears started to prick at the corners of his eyes and he wished he could meet his sister right now. "I always thought I was the only one who survived, the last one of my family. I can’t believe I have an older sister… and of course a cousin!", he added quickly and looked up to A'aba.
His cousin just grinned at him and ruffled his hair. "Welcome back to the family, Viloh!"
