Virtual Sketchbook 1
1) Hello, my name is Khoa Tran. I was born in Vietnam and lived there for 10 years before moving to Bradenton, Florida. Finishing this class would help me achieve my Associate degree which would help me transfer to the University of Central Florida.
2) My assigned work is #12: Venus of Willendorf
Tumblr media
c 25,000 – 20,000 BCE Woman of Willendorf. Stone sculpture.
5 Facts:
The Woman of Willendorf is a small statue made from stone. It's really old, from around 25,000 to 20,000 BCE, and it's famous for its unique look.
People think the statue represents fertility because of its big boobs, round tummy, and private parts. These features suggest it might have been a symbol for making babies or a goddess of motherhood.
We don't know who made the statue or exactly why. It doesn't have a face, and its focus on the body parts linked to making babies makes it special but puzzling.
One intriguing aspect is the lack of a face. The sculptor chose not to carve facial features, leaving the head smooth. This adds to the mystery surrounding its purpose and symbolism.
Its small size suggests it was meant to be carried or held. Some theories suggest it could have been a personal amulet, carried for luck or protection.
3) When I first saw the statue, I thought it was some type of statue used in a ritual of some sort and thought it was weird-looking. I couldn't understand what the statue meant at first and thought maybe it was some kind of decoration that an artist had created for themselves. But after reading a bit, I realized that it way ancient people expressed their ideas about women's bodies, life, and babies. I like that it represents the symbol of fertility and that people back then carry it as a charm for birth.
ART AND WRITING:
Tumblr media
This is a painting that I received as a gift from my brother. It is a character from an anime called Jujutsu Kaisen, and his name is Toge Inumaki. I hung this up in my room by my door so that when I left my room, I would see it. This painting is printed on canvas but it is still a very nice piece of work. The character represents a calm and reserved demeanor which is similar to me. He is also my favorite character from the show as he and I have a lot of similarities.
WRITING A SELF-PORTRAIT:
I am 19 years old, I am a male and was born in Vietnam. I lived in Bradenton, Florida. What I do for fun in my free time is reading manga or talking with my friends and doing activities with them. I was a member of the JROTC program back in my high school years. I currently work at Nike Outlet Mall since 2 weeks ago so I am fairly new to my job. I think what makes me unique is my personality, my friends and people I've met have told me that my personality is what caught their attention and it is how I made many friends. I think that is the baggage that I carry with me, by being openly minded and optimistic about arts. But I believe that everyone has a unique personality and that's what make them who they are.
ART PROJECT (SELF-PORTRAIT)
Tumblr media
My option for a drawing was a dog. Dogs are incredibly devoted and charming pets who exhibit traits like joy, loyalty, and relationships. Maybe my choice to depict a dog is a reflection of how much I value these traits, or perhaps it's just me being devoted and loving. In addition, dogs frequently make people smile, much like my originality and inventiveness make those around me happier. I also love dogs, somedays when I can afford my own house, I would adopt a bulldog since I love their melting faces.

Elementary! …I Forgot The Line || Erika Tamaki || 2.3 || Re: Nico, Haven, Khoa || Attn: Kit, Nya-o, RIP, Hoodie Holder
Erika, despite it all, remains relatively down. She doubts anybody would blame her, but it doesn’t stop the irrational thought that she’s somehow letting people down. That isn’t fun. Thankfully Haven already said a lot of what Erika had wanted to.
“Haven has a point about the dream test kind of being useless right now. Even a slight nap or something before or after he murder would let the killer know. It was a good thought though!” She gives Aisling a quick smile, trying to show she doesn’t hold anything against her. Under different circumstances? Could’ve worked like a charm.
“Haven was also right about the hoodie though. It might not prove anything, but forcing either Nya-o or RIP to try it on would be good right now. Again, might not lead anywhere, but some people sort of saw the person, right? Maybe that’d be enough to let them deduce things. Give the hoodie to one of the prime suspects, and we’ll perform that little test.“ Credit where credit is due, right? As for Khoa’s theory though…Well, Erika just sighs.
“I think other people could have snuck in, especially if Khoa was busy for an hour. That being said, getting rid of that doubt would be best. Kit, can you just say you didn’t take the step stool? It would be extremely relevant right now. I don’t think she did, like I said, but might as well shut it down entirely, right?” Erika shrugs.
“Anyways…Blakeley was asleep in the cot during my shift, so she was there until 1 AM. I went to sleep after that, so I cannot totally vouch for her whereabouts, but based on alibis given I am confident in saying Blakeley would not have the time to sneak away. I’m not a total ditz, after all! I can be sure of those facts!”
…Was the energy appropriate? Probably not, but Erika had a lot on her mind and a little fake confidence never hurt anybody.

Vietnamese travel destinations that won plaudits in 2018
Vietnamese travel destinations that won plaudits in 2018
Not a month went by this year without praiseworthy mention of one or more Vietnamese destinations in international media.
With an estimated 15 million foreign arrivals, 2018 has been a highly successful tourism year for Vietnam. The nation’s growing popularity has been reflected throughout the year in various international travel publications.

The American news site CNN urged holidaymakers around the world to explore Hanoi’s flower market in the lead up to Tet, the Lunar New Year festival, Vietnam’s biggest and most important holiday.
The Quang Ba Flower Market, which opens on Au Co Street in Tay Ho District every day from 3 a.m., was among 15 best places in the world to celebrate the Year of the Rooster, alongside with Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong, the Raohe Night Market in Taipei and Gyeongbokgung Palace in South Korea.
Quang Ba is the largest and oldest flower market in Hanoi which works at frenetic space during Tet as shoppers hurriedly prepare large volumes of fresh flowers.
Vietnamese people have a long tradition of offering fresh flowers to deities and their ancestors during the holiday to pray for luck and peace for the new year.

The charming towns of Hoi An and Sa Pa were included in the top 10 must-go places in Southeast Asia by Rough Guides, the U.K.-based travel publication.
Hoi An is a gentle and tranquil old town by the river that used to be a rendezvous for Japanese, Chinese and Western traders during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Motorbikes are banned in the town center, so visitors can stroll calmly through streets lined by yellow houses with old red-tiled roofs or take a cycling tour outside the town into the countryside with paddy fields and temples.

Around 300 kilometers (186 miles) from Hanoi, Sa Pa has grown in popularity as a highlands tourism destination where one can walk around at leisure or go on strenuous mountain treks.
The town is home to famous Saturday night “love market”, which becomes a colorful exhibition of local ethnic minority culture. A gothic stone church in the center of the town built by French missionaries, Mount Fansipan, and terraced rice fields are sights that draw thousands of visitors year after year.

Dat Tham Beach on Con Dao, an island off the southern coast of Vietnam, was among the U.K. newspaper Independent’s list of “10 eco-friendly beaches in Southeast Asia that tourists haven’t ruined yet.”
With the likes of Da Nang, Nha Trang and Mui Ne now packed with tourists, Dat Tham Beach, protected by the Con Dao National Park, is one of the few undeveloped stretches of sand left in Vietnam that are awakening foreign tourists’ interest with its untouched beauty, the Independent noted.
To get to the beach, visitors have to register at the park’s office a few days in advance before starting a six-kilometer hike.
Con Dao is a collection of 16 islands and islets in the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau, around 230 kilometers (143 miles) southeast of HCMC.
The paradisiacal archipelago was once home to a prison used by the French during the Indochina War.

Vietnam’s capital city, Hanoi, came in 12th on travel site TripAdvisor’s list of the world’s top 25 destinations, alongside Paris and Rome.
The biggest highlight of the Vietnamese capital is its Old Quarter, once a collection of 36 guild streets, several of which still retain the original trade.
Hanoi is also home to the popular Vietnamese Women’s Museum and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which is home to 15,000 exhibits, 42,000 movies and photos featuring the diversity of 54 ethnic groups that reside in Vietnam.

The country’s deep-water bay, Cam Ranh, was named among the world’s seven best destinations for May by top travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler.
Cam Ranh, an hour south of its much busier sister Nha Trang in the central province of Khanh Hoa, is developing a reputation for its beaches, several of which have pristine stretches.
Last June, the Cam Ranh International Airport put into operation its $163 million international passenger terminal to bring in more overseas visitors to the pristine bay.

Leading international travel guide publisher Lonely Planet ranked Saigon third in a list of top ten places to visit in Asia.
With more than seven million foreign tourist arrivals in 2018, the city’s popularity has continued to rise with its skyscrapers, French colonial buildings, war relics and vibrant nightlife.
International visitors to HCMC spent $145 a day on average and stayed for 5.21 days last year, according to a survey on the city’s tourism market carried out by its tourism department and the General Statistics Office.

The New York-based travel site Thrillist named Lan Ha Bay, relatively unknown sister of the world-famous Ha Long Bay, among the places to go in Southeast Asia before “the hordes arrive.”
The 7,000-hectare wide bay sits to the east of Cat Ba Island in the northern city of Hai Phong, and is home to around 400 islands.
Cai Beo fishing village, said to be the oldest of its kind in Vietnam and considered a living museum of Vietnamese fishing culture, is still a mostly overlooked treasure here.
The floating village, with around 300 households living on catching and/or farming fish, consists of dozens of floating houses rising above clear green waters against glistening rocky mountains and blue skies.

The U.S.-based Time magazine listed Vietnam’s Golden Bridge in its list of top 100 World’s Greatest Places for 2018.
Images of the two giant hands holding up the 150 meters long bridge at Ba Na Hills near the central city of Da Nang went viral and received international plaudits just months after it opened to tourists in June this year.
Designed by Vu Viet Anh, design principal at TA Landscape Architecture, the bridge quickly became the hottest destination on Instagram, the world’s top photo sharing network.

The U.K. travel guide publisher Lonely Planet selected the journey on the country’s north-south rail link one of the best scenic routes in the world.
The trip of more than 1,000 miles that winds north-south down Vietnam’s coast, connecting Hanoi and Saigon and all points in between in 36 hours, offers beautiful views along the way.
“Traveling over a thousand miles from Hanoi in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south, there is no more atmospheric way to haul into Vietnam’s twin metropolises. And there’s no better way of exploring all the glories in between,” Lonely Planet noted.
For many, a three-day journey from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City can be too long. But travelers who want something different than an easy one-hour flight are rewarded with stunning scenery throughout the journey, particularly in central Vietnam.

U.K. newspaper The Telegraph unveiled a list of 10 beaches unspoiled by the tourism boom, and two from Vietnam showed up.
The An Thoi Islet off Phu Quoc Island in the southern province of Kien Giang Province and Binh Lap Island in the central province of Khanh Hoa have escaped overcrowding, coral damage and waste triggered by “overtourism” of the sort that pushed Thailand’s Maya Bay to close down indefinitely.

The U.S.-based National Geographic said the Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range was among the 28 best travel spots in the world to visit in 2019.
Around 195 miles northwest of Hanoi, Hoang Lien Son stretches 180 kilometers between Lao Cai, Lai Chau and Yen Bai provinces.
Vietnam’s grandest mountain range offers year-round cool weather and has become a popular tourist attraction in recent years. The newly installed cable car system on Mount Fansipan, has drawn an increasing number of tourists to the area.

Da Nang, home to Asia’s most beautiful My Khe Beach, and a neighbor to the popular ancient town of Hoi An, was named among top 10 trending global destinations for 2019 by Australian travel website Finder.
Several new international flight routes have been launched to connect Da Nang with other Asian destinations, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore and South Korea.

More and more tourists are visiting the lovely city of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, also known as Saigon, in recent years due to the city’s rapid urban and economic development.
The influx of tourists has been a boon for Ho Chi Minh City with many modern F&B outlets, bars, pubs, traditional coffee shops and cafes sprouting up across the city.
I’ve been told that their food is amazing – so many people tell me that cafe-hopping and food-hunting is the standard practice when you’re here!
Little did I know that I ended up doing exactly that. In just 4 days, I went to over 9 cafes and 4 restaurants! This includes Secret Garden Restaurant and various other Vietnamese coffee shops.
Here are some of my favourite Saigon cafes that you should try when you visit Ho Chi Minh City next time! 😉
Vietnamese Coffee Shops in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
1. Phuc Long Coffee & Tea – In search of great Matcha Latte
Source
It’s not uncommon to see this popular café chain all around Ho Chi Minh City. You can walk down the streets and see tourists and locals holding a cup of Phuc Long Coffee & Tea in hand.
There are so many Phuc Long outlets across Ho Chi Minh City, serving typical beverages and desserts at reasonable prices. To me, it seems as though this was their local version of the popular multinational chain Starbucks.
A good friend of mine recommended that I try the matcha latte (one of my favourite drinks ever!) here at Phuc Long Coffee & Tea, promising that it’ll be one of the best matcha lattes ever, and so off I go!
We stopped by one of the outlets near Grand Saigon Hotel to get our hands on a matcha latte and it totally didn’t disappoint – we love the mixture of creaminess and freshness of the matcha latte.
It was drizzling when we were drinking our latte, and so we spent a good hour sitting on the second floor of the cafe and watching the traffic rush pass, enjoying our drink.
I wouldn’t recommend the desserts though. The cake we tried felt like it had been frozen there for days – tough and tasteless.
If matcha latte isn’t one of your favourite drinks, have a look at other drink options on the menu. The couple sitting next to us ordered a cup of Choco Lover, which comes with a generous serving of whipped cream and chocolate drizzle, which I think will come in perfect on days when the Ho Chi Minh City sun is blazing.
Address - (Multiple locations) Opening Hours - 07:00 - 22:30 Menu
2. M2C Cafe – Modern meets culture
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This cafe was a little tougher to find but thank goodness we did. We were told that this cafe serves really amazing Vietnamese Coffee, apart from its other drinks offered.
What I liked a lot about this cafe was its rustic, antique interior design. With low-lighting and unique choice of furniture and wall decorations, M2C Cafe was able to give a nostalgic feel of an old-school cafe.
Must try:
Again, I set my heart out to try another cup of Vietnamese iced coffee, but with a twist – the Vietnamese Drip Coffee, where hot coffee made from fine Vietnamese coffee grinds are filtered through a traditional Vietnamese filter into a cup of ice, cooling it down for your pleasure. It was an interesting experience that I enjoyed, and it didn’t cost me much as well.
They have plenty of other drinks and desserts to choose from, and it isn’t as costly here! Take a break and have a drink while strolling through the neighbourhood streets.
Address - 34D Thu Khoa Huan Street | District 1, Ho Chi Minh City District 1, Vietnam Opening Hours - 08:30 - 23:00
3. The Workshop
Source
The moment I entered The Workshop, I felt like I was in New York City all over again. The Workshop is a modern café, much like those you would find across Europe and Australia, yet it still has this local charm to it, making it uniquely Saigon.
Located close to the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, The Workshop is a great venue for you to relax with friends.
This is one of the few cafes that I know of that serves gluten-free and vegetarian dishes. Talk about being inclusive! Now you can bring your friends and loved ones, especially if they have more dietary restrictions, with lesser worries!
Must try:
Surely, this is another Vietnamese coffee shop that tops the Vietnam coffee list. The Vietnamese iced coffee, with its creamy and full body and delicious taste, is what I came for, and I didn’t regret walking here in the hot and humid Ho Chi Minh City weather at all.
Don’t hesitate to get a second cup while you’re at it – I had 2 of it myself!
Source
Apart from that, they serve a good range of main dishes that you can eat for breakfast or lunch. This includes pasta and Eggs Benedict. If you’re not in the mood for a heavy meal, you can choose to taste one of their desserts or pastries.
The cost is slightly more than the regular price, so come mentally prepared!
Address: 27 Ngo Duc Ke, P. Ben Nghe, Q.1 (2nd floor), Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam District 1 Opening Hours: 08:00 – 21:00
Vietnamese Restaurants in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
1. Secret Garden Restaurant
This is arguably the toughest restaurant to find in the entire Ho Chi Minh City. After walking through streets after streets, asking locals for directions along the way, and climbing up numerous flights of stairs, I finally found this gem of a restaurant (no wonder it’s called Secret Garden Restaurant)!
Secret Garden Restaurant, also affectionately known as Secret Garden Home-cooked Restaurant, brings the best of traditional Vietnamese cuisines in a comfortable, homely setting.
The friendly staff sure know how to keep me feeling welcome, too, by constantly making conversations and asking me if the food was any good.
The best part of it all – the rooftop dining view! Having a meal at the top of the building, under the twinkling fairy lights, amidst a traditional setting, was a great dining experience for me.
Must try:
As soon as I entered the restaurant, I can’t help but be amazed as I looked around and saw different tables filled with great-smelling and delicious-looking food.
All these home-cooked dishes had a drooling effect on me. They all looked delicious that it’s hard to recommend just one main dish, so why not try a little bit of everything? Spicy grilled prawns, vegetable spring rolls, lemongrass pork… and the list goes on and on.
Do take note that the serving size may be huge, so it’s good to bring along a buddy or two to enjoy this meal with you! On top of that, for the amount that I ordered and the taste, it’s reasonably affordable.
Tip: It gets rather busy at times, especially during the peak periods, so I’ll advise you to book a table before your arrival by calling the restaurant at +84 90 990 46 21 to avoid waiting in line too long!
Address: Top Floor, 158 Pasteur, Bến Nghé, Quận 1, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Opening Hours: 10:00 – 22:00
2. Bun Cha 145 Bui Vien
Source
Don’t be fooled – this small, cosy restaurant settled in Ho Chi Minh City’s backpacking district, Bui Vien, scores big on the taste scale!
Bun cha, a Vietnamese dish consisting of grilled pork and white rice noodles, is a popular dish here in Ho Chi Minh City, despite having originated from Hanoi.
Bun Cha 145 Bui Vien knows exactly how to draw people from all walks of life here – you’ll see streams of locals and foreigners entering the shop, enjoying the food and having a good time.
Must try:
As the name suggests, many come here for the delicious bun cha! It’s not as fancy as you would imagine it to be, but the great service that comes with the bun cha will be a bonus.
The owner is affable, and so are the staff, helping us to decide on what to eat and how to eat the bun cha.
Source
The service is super quick and the best part of it all was the cost! It’s pretty affordable, but that’s because the serving size can be small. If you have space in your tummy, don’t be shy to grab another bowl – in fact, most of the tourists here do just that.
Another item on the menu worth mentioning is the famous spring rolls, which I enjoyed so much too. There are plenty of other options to try from, so keep your options open!
Address: 145 Bùi Viện, Phạm Ngũ Lão, Quận 1, Hồ Chí Minh, Vietnam Opening Hours: 11:30 - 16:00, 17:30 – 21:00
Saigon Cafes in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
1. Maison Marou – Amazing French Chocolate
Chocolate lovers, rejoice! Have a break at one of the most popular cafes in Ho Chi Minh City.
Here at Maison Marou, chocolates are specially and freshly made in-house by chefs daily and you can view the entire process behind glass windows. Combining traditional French recipes with locally grown single origin cacao and some of Vietnam’s finest ingredients, this cafe whips up great chocolates, albeit at higher prices.
Started by two French chocolate lovers, Maison Marou has evolved into one of the most adored cafes around Ho Chi Minh City. In fact, Maison Marou is so well-known that you’ll see groups of tourists and locals entering the shop to see what the hype was about.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Personally, I feel that Maison Marou wants to share its love for chocolate with the world, so much so that it invests heavily in sharing its origins by dedicating a sizeable section of its café to show the history of chocolates in Vietnam via its massive mural of information. The artefacts, like an old chocolate-making machine, add to the amazing ambience of the cafe.
Must Try:
Knowing that they specialize in chocolates, I decided to go for the most chocolate-y drink. Their signature hot chocolate is a good start! Frothy and delicious, it certainly awakened my sweet tooth.
If you want to bring a piece of the magic back home, they have packet chocolate bars available!

2. Partea – English Tearoom
If you’re in the mood for some English tea in a fine, classy British setting, then Partea’s for you!
Located within a building on the 5th floor near the city centre, Partea houses a wide range of English tea which are served in unique porcelain cups and tea pots when you buy a pot.
Partea is located inside a seemingly old, derelict building on the outside. As you gaze up the building, you’ll see many people sitting by the window, sipping drinks and having a chat. To get to Partea, you might have to climb up flights of stairs, as the elevators might not be fully operational (it happened to me) or large enough to transport everyone.
Paradoxically, you’ll soon notice that there are plenty of hipster cafes and boutique shops housed inside this building. I learnt my lesson – never judge a book by its cover!
What attracts me to Partea the most is the unique design and style of the café, so much so that I spent almost half an hour walking around and taking photos of the cute aesthetics, completely ignorant of the fact that my drinks and dessert were already waiting for me at my table!
We met a local friend, Linh, to go to Partea right when it just opened. I purchased the freshly baked chocolate brownie (it was so good!) and English Breakfast tea that comes in a teapot. The teapot serves about 4 to 5 cups.
It’s great for when you want to hang out with friends and chill over non-alcoholic drinks, admiring and basking in the cute ambience.

3. L’Uisine
This cafe was where I had my dinner on the first night in Ho Chi Minh City. L’Uisine was one of those hip, modern cafes that virtually everyone would recommend you to visit.
Situated within walking distance from Ben Thanh Night Market, we walked to the café with huge expectations at around 8:30pm, and were we glad it was still open then!
The cafe also doubles as a bar, serving alcoholic beverages that you can get for special prices during their happy hours from 5pm to 7pm daily. Apart from that, the cafe serves a selection of main dishes fit for your breakfast, lunch or dinner meals.
We ordered a fish and chips for two together with Vietnamese iced coffee and chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream.
The prices were pretty steep and the serving size was small. The fish and chips felt like something you can get for a third of the price.
However, the highlight of the night was the amazing Vietnamese iced coffee; the aroma, body and taste of the coffee is one that is hard to replicate once you’re out of Vietnam.
On top of that, they have a nice ambience too. Decorated with wooden furniture and bright fairy lights, it’s a suitable venue to just hang out and enjoy a night out with friends and loved ones (the café is located on the second floor of a shophouse with an open-air balcony)!
Budget Tip: Students get to enjoy an additional 15% off! You just need to bring your student pass and show it to them upon payment to receive this discount. 😉

4. Ichi Cat Café
For the record, I’ve never ever been to a cat café before, so I was really looking forward to this! I was just travelling around Ho Chi Minh City and saw that Ichi Cat Café was just minutes away from where I was, so I thought, “Why not?”
Located just outside of the city centre, Ichi Cat Café is home to over 15 cats of all sizes.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
There is an entry fee of 40,000 VND/USD1.80 for each adult, exclusive of the drinks and snacks. There’s a wide range of drinks available from smoothies to yogurt drinks that you can choose from. I ordered an iced chocolate coffee, and I concluded that their drinks aren’t that exceptional, for the price I paid.
The highlight of the visit was seeing the many cats all over the café.
My belief of cats being lazy creatures was firmed up when I tried to play with them. All I got in return were nonchalant “leave me alone” expressions.
Even then, the species are really unique – not the kind you’d see on the streets. They were furry and cute, even when they were lying there, doing nothing most of the time.
Still, seeing them move around and posing for pictures make for a perfect evening – or should I say, purrr-fect. 😊

Fun stories and realizations
When I hung out with Cat and Jenn yesterday during lunch, we talked about how our friends talk about us behind our backs. Like not in a bad way, but like we wonder how our friends talk about us when we’re not there. Catherine brought up the one thing that she hates about me is that her parents like me more than her current bf LOL. Her mom was like wow why aren’t you dating Theo, he’s so nice!! I appreciated it so much. Idk I like it when parents like me and I’m glad her mom and grandma likes me. It makes me think and realize that I’m actually not that bad with parents. I’m really good with one of my old best friend’s mom, she still asks about me to this day lol. My first gf Kristy’s mom liked me and still remembers me to this day! A couple other parents like me too, and I think it’s funny how cat’s parents like me hehe that they like me more than her bf. Idk I guess it’s a nice contrast with my ex. Since it felt like her friends didn’t really approve of me and neither did her family… but it felt so misunderstood :( since they never really got to know me as a person. I drove cat and her mom to meet fresh (ice cream) in Irvine, and I guess talked to her mom, and she got to know me and like me as a person. She’s a really strict mom too jesus! So idk, I feel like given the chance to actually sit down and get to know me (besides being a picky eater which I worked on), I think I can be a pretty nice, talkative, and charming boy?
Anyways, besides that story. I’ve been making an effort to hang out with friends back home more. From jia, to my cousin Khoa and his sister going to sb, Vivi, catherine, hope, Fyona, jenn (new friend nowadays woo), Helene and erika tomorrow, kristy (ex gf one), and yeah! Idk good to keep in touch with friends :) glad we’re all still friends hanging out years later!
I went to anime expo with catherine and it was alright. I’ve been every year, so it kinda became the same to me. I got a bit burnt out from spending too much time with ppl, and I felt like chilling at home by myself. But I suppressed that urge and try to make time with friends. Catherine said something that made me think tho. She was at the con with me and she said, she kinda wished her bf was here. I knew how she felt perfectly. I could recall a year ago, at the oc night market with Helene, stefanie was in Taiwan, and I remember wishing she was there with me. It felt like idk empty or weird like man this is cool and fun, but it would be a lot nicer with her here to share the experience with. But when I was at the con, although I understood how she felt. I felt just fine? Since I guess, I got used to being by myself and happy on my own or happy with friends. So i didn't really feel like oh it would be nice with x person was here right now. I guess it just means that I've become more independent and can be happy on my own, but it also means that idk can't really be sad if there's no one special to miss..?
Anyways, I realized some things about myself tho. I do think that I made some progress as a personal mentally. I know I haven't been the best bf in the past, I've made dumb mistakes, and regret a lot of them. I like to think that I learned from them, and can truly be a better person for someone special now. I like to think about what I have to offer, since idk I guess I think that relationships should improve someone's quality of life. I heard that from Jessica a long time ago. I felt like that's true, it should, and I want to be a great person for myself, but also for a SO. Since why would you not wanna be a good SO? Idk I feel like anyone who cares for me and I care for them, I should be in a place that I could idk protect them, treat them well, and can actually make them happy. Something I also realized is that for a SO, I really like when my SO is my best friend. But also a partner that I could do things with. I know it's good to have time apart and be independent. But it would be nice if idk I'm my SO first thought when it comes to cool things to do with. Like I wanna be such a special person to her and good company that when she thinks of like concerts or new places to try or just things to do, she wants to do with me first. I don't mean do everything with me. But it would be nice to be a first choice, since idk I wanna be my SO's #1 best friend that they would want to do special things or cool things with first if it's something that would appeal to both of us. Also I'm always down to make sacrifices and tag along to things, if it'll make her happy. Since I'm all about idk enjoying life and making memories together. So yeah, something I realized I want in a SO. Someone who would want to spend as much time with me, as much as I would with them. I could see an argument that I want to spend too much time with my SO, but that's subjective I guess. Since I'm a big fan of my alone time, browsing internet, reading, doing my hobbies, but I like some time to call or chat with my SO. Then it would be nice for me to spend vacations with them making memories, since typically busy during normal school year to make fun memories. Idk I guess just need someone who thinks same way :) if not, then obviously compromise is needed, since nobody is perfect. Everyone has their own opinions and own thoughts, and relationships between two ppl will always need some compromise! So yeahhh, prob someone who can compromise and be willing to make sacrifices is something i need to. Like fk I'm willing to sacrifice some comfort occasionally if it means that my SO will be happy, and honestly it'll make me happy in the end too! :) hopefully my futures SO will feel the same way too.
But yeah just random thoughts and analysis on what I realized I want and fun stories. Summer is good, and gonna try to make this year great! I'm gonna try to be happy and stay happy like always :)

The British Invasion.
It is no secret of mine that I have a large enthusiasm and passion for Thailand. I love this Country for many reasons, some I can’t even explain. Ever growing as a holiday destination, only last week it was reported that the growing figures of tourism are set to bring problems to Thailand as they just don’t have the resources to handle it.
Like myself, it is the good food, wonderful people and beautiful climate that attract the thousands of backpackers to Bangkok Airport every year. And I know that the gorgeous Thai women with a unique pining for pale, fat and old European men also bring in the 40+ males. But what about the rest? What charms does Siam hold that successfully bring those out of this bracket in too? I decided to travel with some holiday makers to find out.
Judith and Debra.
I met Judith and Debra at Bangkok airport. Arriving from North Manchester, they agreed to let me spend a few days with them as they holidayed in Thailand. The pair were aged between 50 and 60 and my first observation was the unapologetic openness with their bodily functions. Upon entering the taxi, Judith was extremely flatulent and complained about the gin on the plane saying it made her ‘gassy’. Their second trip together to Thailand, the pair began to recall fond memories that resulted in ferocious bouts of laughter from jokes I didn’t get. In the middle of one of their ‘jokes’ and as Debra roared with laughter, she began urgently root around her handbag. I assumed she had a sudden panic regarding the whereabouts of her passport, instead she pulled out what looked like a large white sleeping bag from a pack of ‘Tena Lady’ and began to struggle it inside her knickers. I later realised this was some kind of adult nappy and was needed to protect her from her ‘laughter leaks’.
We reached the hotel and I was surprised to learn of their choice of location. They had chosen to stay on Rambuttri in Bangkok, which is the street adjacent to the busy, loud and infamous backpacker area of ‘Khoa San Road’ Often avoided, I enquired about the reasons for this and they instantly informed me it was the place to buy ‘cheap gear’ in the form of fake designer goods. I would later learn that if you were to combine the amount of time the pair spent shopping for things they didn’t even need, it would take up around 98.4% of their holiday, the rest they just spent drinking, shitting and watching documentaries about murderers on their IPads.
The pair were really friendly and insisted that I join them at their favourite bar in the whole of Thailand. They said the cocktails were to die for and I would really be missing out if I didn’t go. Bangkok boasts some of the most impressive bars in the World, they have sky bars that allow for beautiful skyline views and lavish drink menus in luxurious surroundings. Although not usually my thing, I didn’t want to be rude or miss out on an insight into something new. I showered, washed my hair and put on my one ‘good’ shirt I carried for formal emergencies. Just like their choice of accommodation, I was also surprised when we arrived at the bar that was actually a few bottles in the boot of a van, 7 seconds walk from the hotel room.
Tumblr media
Their favourite bar vended 'cocktails’ in plastic cups from the window and their ‘poison’ came in the form of vodka and the same lemon juice they use to cook. I had to leave after three of these speciality cocktails when Judith was escorted to the metal chairs after breaking the plastics and later attempted to shit in the street.
The next day came and as the pair were hungover, they said they were going to their favourite restaurant tonight for some good food and I should join them. Food is probably my favourite thing about Thailand and I never turn down an offer to try a new restaurant. Thai cuisine is absolutely delicious and full of beautiful flavour combinations in the form of tasty stir fries, hearty soups and spicy curries. Something for everyone, Bangkok certainly deserved it’s award earlier this year for best street food in the World and is in no doubt, my favourite place to get my fill of Thai food.
I’d agreed to meet the ladies at 8.00pm but I was slightly late. I was pleasantly surprised to see that their favourite restaurant was a street food vendor offering hundreds of familiar and not so familiar dishes. The menu was cheap and really extensive and I was really excited to sit down, crack open a beer and order an array of dishes to share with these two hungover and hungry women. I was disappointed to learn that they had already ordered before my arrival but they did say I could of course try their dishes as I didn’t waste an opportunity of exploring this menu. I was excited of course until, their dishes of choice were delivered.
Tumblr media
Chips and Mayonnaise.
All washed down with 14 fags.
I tried to talk to the pair about the wonder of Thai food and what they were missing out on. They said they were yet to try Thai food and alternated nightly between chips, kebab or ‘spag bol’. After several pleas, on day 4 in Phuket, the pair agreed to try a small buffet of Thai dishes I selected. On the one condition they were allowed to order garlic bread.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately the delivery of food was not met fondly with Judith, whilst Debra tried to be polite, Judith went on to kick the table over, throw rice at my head and proceeded to place my bowl on the floor, lift up her dress and shit in my soup. She continued her aggression at other diners before taking the 24 pieces of garlic bread up to her room and watching a documentary about a woman who murdered her children and ate her pets.
I didn’t want to fall out with Judith again so I visited their room in the morning to apologise. I told her how  I regretted greatly asking her to try Thai food in Thailand and that everything now could be done on her terms. I tried to find Debra to do the same, but she was out buying phone cases. I did wonder why as she had already bought 84 but I now know that these were for ‘best’.
I told the ladies I would love to put everything behind us and accompany them in doing what they love to do most in Thailand. Although this was actually shopping, they told me I could accompany them on their second favourite activity seen as though all we had done since we arrived was shop. I asked them to keep it a surprise and for them to simply lead the way. Filled with mountains, museums, beaches, waterfalls, outdoor and indoor activities I was excited to see what kept these ladies returning to the Land of Smiles.
Cheap cosmetic work applied by a ladybody with a gun. Of course.
Tumblr media
The pair had their eyebrows, lips, nipples, eyelashes and toenails tattooed on. They had their arseholes dyed, shrunk, cleaned and shaved, They had their skin scrubbed, removed, applied, dyed, cleaned, massaged and cooked. They had their nails pulled, painted, rubbed and licked. Jesus Christ, what didn’t they have done? I endured 9 hours of their moans and groans and questioned the element of enjoyment, but my search for answers strictly came to an end when Judith decided to shit in the sink whilst having her scalp reconstructed.
The next day, the two ladies came to my room and asked if they could have their payment. I explained I never offered to pay them for their time and it was a mutual agreement for some light research. I soon found out they were in fact aware of this but had actually spent every single penny they had between them at the Ladyboy salon. I explained to them how much I wished I could help but I was on a tight budget with 2 months left and just couldn’t afford it on this occasion. Regrettably, things turned sour after this and that was the last time we spoke.
I left Judith and Debra a month ago. To this day, I often see the pair in and around Bangkok but they pretend they do not know who I am. They seem to be trying various ways to be making money to afford a flight home which I have documented below. I will forever treasure my time with these two ladies and the insight I gained into their lives. I wish them the best of luck with getting back to England and their futures.

UPDATE 06/05/2017:

The U.K. travel guide publisher Lonely Planet selected the journey on the country’s north-south rail link one of the best scenic routes in the world.
