At midday on the road into Grünland, a Mennonite colony in the Bolivian department of Beni, the only sound is a distant chainsaw.

On either side, strips of deforested land extend into the distance. Underfoot, the soil is scattered with shards of ceramic and bone: remnants of the pre-Columbian peoples that this part of the Bolivian Amazon, known as the Llanos de Mojos, once supported.

Archaeologists are only just beginning to understand the scale and complexity of these societies, but all the while, the agricultural frontier keeps advancing, destroying sites before they can be studied. The environmental damage of deforestation is well-known, but the Llanos de Mojos reveals another side of its impact: the loss of human history.

Grünland was founded in 2005 by Mennonites, members of the tightly-nit Anabaptist Christian group that began arriving in South America in the early 20th century, in search of isolation and lands to cultivate.

In one field, a Mennonite man called Guillermo was resting in the shade of his tractor. He cheerfully acknowledged finding ceramics and bones while working the land.

Umberto Lombardo, an Italian earth scientist and one of a handful of academics who study the archaeology of Beni, probed gently with questions about the topography of the land when it was first deforested.

The Llanos de Mojos is an almost completely flat region, so any elevated areas are a sure sign of human activity. Lombardo walked about, stopping here and there to pick pieces from the earth of what was once a vast human-made mound, now partly flattened by the farmers.

“The surface of the site is completely destroyed, changed, because the earth has been moved, the pottery broken,” said Lombardo. “That part of the archaeological archive is lost.”

The Mennonites are just one facet of Bolivia’s booming agribusiness, and what is happening in Grünland is happening all over Beni.

The Bolivian government has big plans for the sector. Today, the country has roughly 4m hectares of cultivated land and 10 million cattle. By 2025, the government wants 13m hectares and 18 million cattle.

On the current trajectory the government will undershoot those targets substantially. Nonetheless it has boosted the sector’s growth by allowing more deforestation and reducing fines for illegal deforestation.

In 2021, Global Forest Watch placed Bolivia third in the world for loss of primary forest, behind Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ranked by population, Bolivia is first by a distance.

Most of this deforestation is happening in two departments: Santa Cruz and Beni. But it is in Beni that a unique archaeological heritage is at risk.

“Archaeology is everywhere in Beni,” said Lombardo. “They say if you put up a roof, you have a museum.”

The Amazon basin was once considered to be pristine wilderness, but a growing body of research has found traces of a vast network of earthworks predating the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas and implying the existence of large, complex societies.

Hey, you're being lied to about what fitness constitutes. If you can't work in an hour-long crossfit slog, but you can work in a five-minute walk, then that is still fitness. If you can't use your legs but you can do arm circles every now and again, that is still fitness. If you're moving around at work, that's still fitness. It can be intentional or incidental, but here's the best part: your body doesn't care if you're dedicating specific work-out times. It doesn't care if the "only" fitness it gets is your nine to five on your feet. It doesn't care, fitness is fitness is fitness. Some of us do it differently, but the end result is more or less similar.

If you can do any type of fitness safely, your body isn't going to care if you're doing it like an Olympic athlete or if you're just a casual.

avoiding my chores for an hour or so by trying to see what combination of path/element we might expect sooner than later.

some fun observations:

destruction and nihility are the only paths with every element covered; no element has all seven paths covered

the most popular path is destruction, the least is preservation

the most popular elements are ice and physical, the least are imaginary and wind

the only combinations we have two characters for are lightning erudition, ice preservation and physical destruction

we are still missing a handful of combinations -

btw i know a bunch of upcoming characters probably already got their paths/elements leaked, please dont mention that or any leaks on this post or i will block you ✌️ thx

Man ty for popping up on my dashboard. I miss voltron, but whenever I try to check what's up I get reaaally bad flashbacks as to how the fandom was. It's kinda worse when u accidentally triggered a community of a popular ship (its not kl@nce) :')))) hnghjgn idk how u do it

voltron is just. such a funny phenomenon. the show was like a C+ at BEST but we all stuck around anyway clinging to the hope that things would eventually improve and then they NEVER did. & so we all had to make do with literal scraps and we were RESOURCEFUL!!! 😭 I have honestly never seen a fandom where the fan content was so divorced from the actual source material like 💀💀💀 and i think this scarcity of good content forced people to be extra creative, which is why the voltron fandom was 1) so genuinely hilarious and 2) full of content producing MACHINES

Literally all we could do was just talk to each other. we were forced to survive off each other’s kindness & it made everyone super co-dependent. it really was a bunch of high schoolers forming parasocial relationships with other high schoolers; of course it got messy!!

also this is such a minor detail in the grand scheme of things but voltron hit tumblr at like the exact time social media became more accessible to people under 13 years old. and like. conflict and discourse is an inevitable part of fandom. but the end result was we had college students picking fights with LITERAL middle schoolers. and I genuinely cannot believe we all thought this was normal behavior!!!!!

#I genuinely get sad when I hear people talk about how voltron caused them so much stress. and then they mention that they’re not even 18 yet #like… wow #god I hope emma does not become an active and involved member of a fandom it’s just. it’s not very moderated.#also people often trivialize voltron’s messiness down to ‘ship wars’ and they were ship wars. but there was a very moralized element to it.#and people were heavily invested in fighting over this. not just because muh ships but people were also very much coming at this #from a place of personal trauma or experience. and in hindsight were just retraumatizing themselves.#ugh. idk fandom kind of sucks. but tumblr in 2012-2015 was such a fun time for me & it was a formative experience #and then I hear people say that voltron turned them off from fandom forever when they were 14 and I go :(#sigh. I’m very tired and on mobile where I can’t really see or edit my tags lol so I apologize for the mess #anyway to answer your last question anon I think that people who were 16+ in 2016 (like me)#had an easier time coping with voltron during + after simply by virtue of having been alive a little longer and therefore #having had more time to establish a solid sense of self/identity. if that makes sense.#ask #anonymous

Ahh, tv shows where I can't tell apart the male leads, my beloathed.

Seriously either we need to go back to lighting our sets more, or long hair on men needs to come back into vogue, because I can't keep living like this.

I can't keep taking two seconds to try to determine who is who every shot because I miss what's going on in the scene!

Controversial opinion, but you need to follow the silhouette rule in live-action projects too, at least in regard to characters in the same show or movie! If you absolutely *can't* hire actors with different heights, hair, or builds, you need to work something out with the costuming department to get a distinct shape!

ok I’m getting a bit obsessed with Spiritbox guys

#i’ve listened to mostly them for the last few days lol #some is a little heavy for me but i’m getting into those songs too #and the more mixed/melodic ones are just such a vibe #makes a change listening to female vocals too :)#that along with the heaviness and electronic elements scratches a different itch somehow #i love the repeated lyrics/songs flowing into each other on the fear of fear especially #angel eyes pushes my tolerance for heaviness but cellar door is growing on me and the others are awesome #i’ve noticed finding out the lyrics helps me enjoy the harsh vocals more so i’ll persevere - there’s a couple of other bands i’ve been #exposing myself to them via too. i won’t listen to stuff that i don’t like but i like heavier music so getting used to that would be good #and when it’s a few lines in a breakdown or something i actively like it so… progress!#dustnroses.txt #spiritbox #metal #metalcore

trying to craft a funger oc like aughhhh i can see him i can picture him in my head right now [image of the most off putting little man possible]

#he does not have a name yet but he DOES have a vague concept. author from the eastern union who got drafted into the military and--#--met another guy during the 1 week he had b4 getting shipped out to basic training. they immediately develop a WAY intense relationship--#--and constantly send letters to each other. author is a total chickenshit and comes to cope w the violence of war thru--#--alcoholism and a complete retreat into his obsession w the other man. gets a couple wires crossed and has his lust morph into more + more #--violent fantasies that the other man plays along w bc its Fun+Wild (at its core its the authors desire for CONTROL. if hes the one--#--bringing the pain then hes safe. even better if its with the single person in existence he feels like he can trust during that--#--period of time). manages to live throughout the rest of the war and rushes back to his lover. spends a slowly degrading week w him where-#--the man comes to realize what he thought of as simple metaphor+exaggeration was TRUE desire from the author + the author flounders--#--without the then expected+familiar terror day in and day out. culminates in the man demanding the author leave and never try to contact--#--him again (saying their romance was wild and exciting and unlike anything hed ever experienced but the only good way it couldve ended--#--was if the author died out on the front and forever left him Wanting without the actual reality of those desires realized) and the--#--author either tries to shoot himself or the man (fails to do so. lol) b4 running off to the first train out of town. worlds messiest guy #ya it leans a bit into samarie territory but hes fun. his theoretical ending b would probably have smth to do w sylvian worship + marriages #even more vague idea for his moonscorched form is a sopping wet pathetic red wolf ('red wolf' being one of the mans terms of endearment--#--thru their wartime love letters) w its legs tangled up in barbed wire so it has to drag itself around. red bc its incredibly--#--thin skin (<-- do you get it .) splits and bleeds thru with every movement. a lot of whining and incoherent babbling as it hesitates to--#--ACTUALLY attack anybody. should have some cock horror element but ive no ideas on that front LOL #skill ideas are persistence predator (more melee damage dealt the less mind hes got- a backstory choice where he focuses entirely on the--#--love letters rather than splitting focus on his on-pause career with short stories) and an unnamed one playing into his terror/lust deal-#--where he gets a buff to either melee damage or speed when his phobia is active. want to come up with at least one more though #mmmaybe him being an author doesnt play that well into his concept as a whole but hes my strangeguy so whatever

the series would become much more low key as it went on and became more and more serious spy action, but as silly as they were i truly miss the grandeur and dare i say camp of the first few eroica chapters, so heres some panels i like that i feel capture that essence

#i basically just mean the more shoujo elements ;_; fgjkjgljflkgjld #me sayin essence cus i hate the word vibe: yea #more of a textual analysis here but #i feel like the start of the series was much more character driven. if it makes sense #like there was always something related that tied them together #but after some point it was more them reacting to whatever was happening in the world #which to me made the series a bit boring #cause its like well theyre in a train together to do a mission. cool. or they were both chasing the achilles statue. cool. it was connected #but then it was like.. some microfilm lost somewhere. some report lost somewhere. and klaus and dorian just kinda popped along the way #became less active in their stories i would say #ESPECIALLY dorian #so much so the romanticism and more shoujo elements of the series were almost made fun of because they only appeared when he was around #but yeah. i like preddy panels #led zeppelin shoujo yaoi manga tag #long post

Here we go, we're at the last part of the special! I actually had to split this up into three parts, so here's part 1 of my favorite Tang moments as I rewatch Embrace Your Destiny - Part 4: Destiny Fulfilled:

Man, I'm kind of sad we never got to see these three fight. They made a big deal of them getting ready for battle, then nothing came of it. I think it would be really cool to see how these three work together (you better give us that in season 4, LMK crew).

Look at how worried he is for Mei here when LBD causes her to lose control of the Samadhi Fire. He cares so much for his kids it hurts.

This is, what, the fourth time in the show he's been carried like that? That is the face of a man who has gotten used to being carried like this and accepted his fate.

(Also, lol, look at Sandy in that first pic)

I love how everyone is flailing as they're falling, and Tang's instinct is just Ball™

Tang, you should be dead. At least the others have some excuse for surviving (they're all demons + an OP human). Ik he has powers now, but he's still the Normal Dude. Huh, there might be some validity to the whole "Tang could be immortal" thing I saw a couple people floating around a while ago.

I love it when Tang is concerned for his friends, but I cannot get enough of Tang being angry or defensive for the sake of MK, Mei, or any of his friends. From what I remember he isn't like that as much in the earlier seasons, and I NEED to see more of it in the future. GIVE ME MORE.

That's the end of part 1 for the final part of the special! Turns out I have a lot more to to say in this episode than I thought I would, so I'll post parts 2 and 3 over the next couple of days.

it's always interesting to me how a bunch of analyses on knives’s character I've seen/read rely on the affirmation that he's inherently in an advantageous or privileged position compared to vash when not only are both of them from the same female-presenting species, they both suffered from the same gendered trauma and exposure to oppression/violence in the form of tessla as kids - it was their reactions and processing (or lack of processing, in knives’s case) of it that ultimately shaped what would later become their opposing ideals and/or beliefs.

obviously, our own different experiences, thoughts, beliefs etc irl will influence our readings on these sort of characters but idk, I think it's curious that knives's brand of rage/hatred/violence is seen as a Clearly Cis Masculine thing (which boy. there's a lot to unpack there) when these feelings stem from a deeply rooted fear of exploitation and consumption (that he can be subjected to, by virtue of the species he belongs to and what his body can do) that can be pretty relatable to afab folks imo. the lowkey infantilization is huh interesting as well bc honestly a lot of knives's overly emotional reactions remind me of afab characters who are immediately dismissed as crazy, hysterical etc etc for acting the same

anyway. I don't really care what genitals ppl hc knives with bc lord knows porn is free real estate and that's another matter (I've personally enjoyed fanarts/fics where he's depicted as having either, both, or smth completely different) but eh ig what I mean to say with all this useless rambling is that knives belonging to the same (oppressed) species as vash and still exhibiting abusive behaviors towards him doesn't automatically make knives the Cishet Male Privileged guy fighting against vash's Queer Trans Marginalization when both can easily be read as sexually-and-gender queer (even if in different ways) and if you believe folks from the same oppressed/marginalized group can't hurt each other well. think abt that perhaps

(as a side note bc this apparently needs to be said on these kinda posts but No I Do Not Think Knives’s Genocidal Tendencies Are Okay)

#I have a lot more to say sjdkdk but I probably should shut up #or well ok a last thing. even from a biological standpoint the manga confirmed knives is technically weaker #than vash is #from that one scene with conrad during the july incident then later as knives tried to merge with him in the ark #a lot of what ppl see as an advantage physically is like. knives relying on his own knowledge of their bodies #(which he seems to have studied)#using the element of surprise to his advantage or external factors/help (like l3gato's powers for example)#this doesn't make his actions towards vash less abusive or violating in nature but yknow again #he's not biologically more privileged than vash #stamp actually added a bit of a more ominous dynamic in this sense bc nai is actively encouraged to hide #what he is for his own safety and he's seen as more 'plant-like' than vash is bc he can produce resources like his sisters #and considering how ship 3 treated vash in the beginning for not being 'useful' in a typical plant way #I can't even imagine what nai would've been put through in his place and if he hadn't weaponized his plant abilities #to defend himself #tp #also yes this is me saying the twins are both on the trans spectrum
