hi! i am a new ice dance fan and was wondering if you could explain why everyone is saying the sport is going downhill?? just trying to learn!!!

Oh boy…. That’s a long story.

The quick version, as pertains to ice dance:

There used to be 3 segments of competition: compulsory dance, original (then short, then rhythm) dance, and the free dance

In the 70’s,80’s,90’s (and earlier?) teams would compete at least 2 compulsory dancers, then OD and FD. It was cut back to one CD around 2000- so eg the 2002 Olympics was one CD, OD, FD. After many scandals relating to judging and corruption, the ISU got rid of the 6.0 scoring system and brought in what is used now known as the Code of points.

Through 2000-2010, teams competed the CD, OD and FD. After the 2010 season (where VM won olys and worlds) the ISU abandoned the CD from senior competition bc ‘it was boring’ and ‘took up too much time at competitions’

As a compromise they rejigged the 2nd portion of competition- renaming it the ‘short dance’ which was very strict and technical- each year there was a chosen rhythm and set pattern dance within their own choreography every team had to perform- so it at least had a compulsory portion where every team was compared directly against each other. After 2018 (when vm won again) they renamed it the ‘Rhythm dance’ and since then have slowly been loosening to rules and requirements to make it less objective- so essentially judges didn’t have to justify their scoring and could just award what they liked. There is also a scoring component called GOE- grade of execution which was increased from 3 to 5 (plus or minus- a score which is added or deducted from each element base value)- this part of the score was given much more weight and priority so essentially a team could perform a fairly easy lift which isn’t worth many points, but the judge decides they really like the lift and can make up that teams points with a high GOE mark if they choose to. And vise versa- give a team low GOE to knock them down even if they are technically strong.

After 2022 olys the set/compulsory pattern was removed all together- so there is no part of ice dance competition now that offers direct comparison. Judges don’t have to reward the actual best team‼️This is where you get fans complaining about teams that are not technically strong scoring well/winning bc the judges “like” them or there is some other (bribe/political) incentive to reward that team.

It is impossible I think to get rid of all corruption in skating, but the 2007-2018 era/s at least had *some accountability (don’t get me started on VM vs DW)

The announcement yesterday that there is not even a solid set ‘theme’ or rhythm going forward (aLeDgEdLy) is infuriating. Add to that that there is no traditional, classical dance left in ice dance- no ballroom, latin, classical ballet. Die hard fans love compulsory dances like the golden waltz and tango romantica bc when a team ( VM) does it well it is ice dance at its purist.

The isu is essentially telling us what is good when we all damn know it’s not good. They are taking us for fools, they are pandering to tik tok audiences bc they know people don’t have the patience or interest to watch actual skating competitions and think they will get audiences back by “modernising” the sport bc people these days can’t relate to tangos and waltz.. which is BS bc back in the 80’s people weren’t getting around waltzing and tangoing at clubs and parties- this is classic dance and art that actually works on ice bc it is adapted from ballroom dance. Not sliding on the ice breakdancing to Party Rock Anthem!🤮

- trying to be supportive. smiling and nodding and saying “that’s great news!” despite knowing he’s going to lose jakes to it all

- then again, morse is the only one who knows, really knows, what jakes has been through

- he knows it’s best for jakes to get out while he can

- settle down with a beautiful girl somewhere really far away

- somewhere he’ll never see him again

- and it’s the way that morse’s smile drops as soon as jakes walks away. as soon as jakes invites him to his party and looks for a final time deep in his eyes and touches his shoulder

- his smile drops immediately and he lets him go

- but morse looks back for him. like orpheus he looks back, which only solidifies he’s lost him

- the teenagers actually look like teenagers - acne, bodies that aren’t conventionally perfect

- they actually communicate

- they actually behave like teenagers - party, get drunk whilst underage, some drug use, sex

- august is fucken annoying and an asshole 🙄😡🤢

- wille is such a good and well rounded character

- simon is absolutely adorable 🥰

- simon knowing how to protect himself and standing up for himself and his family 👌

- i love sara- she’s so cute and portrays her Aspergers and ADHD really well 🥰

- it’s a lot like Skam but obviously a different storyline and in many ways, done much better (i love Skam and it’s the blueprint for this)

- omar rudberg is brilliant 😍😍- i was a fan of him whilst he was in the fooo conspiracy and ive loved him ever since

- the initiation ritual was fucked up

- the first kiss where they were tentative as hell and wille was terrified but he wanted it 👌

- the piano scene in the beginning of the 3rd episode is cute as hell - up until wille says they should forget about the kiss 😭

- felice being obsessed with wille to that extent, like that, in the beginning was hella annoying and really gross but also really realistic and a thing that people do

- “i take it back” 🥲 not quite how it works but got a cute as fuck smile out of simon so 🤷‍♀️

- simon and wille grinning at each other when simon is singing is the most adorable thing in the whole world - wille is a proud boyfriend since the first time he heard him sing

you already KNOW we’re gonna have to break down this new chapter. hopefully this ask isn’t too long, but i’ve got so many things to mention:

“And neither time did David do anything wrong but love a little too much.” and this will be the very sad beginning of a litany of great lines in the chapter

“You can keep thinking of him for eternity. I just want it to hurt every time you do.” as cruel as the line is, i really think it’s one of the clearest ways for the reader to understand mallory’s values

david manipulating mallory into feeding the kids, this man can be dangerously smart when he wants to be

logan 🥴🤢🤮

“I’m sorry,” David said. “Did he marry you?” I KNOW THATS RIGHT

max don’t stop calling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the flashback feels like the last piece of the puzzle. we already have a pretty clear picture of what happened, this scene just fills in any gaps and we can move on from the past and talk about mavids future

if it wasn’t put in the show, what did david put in the show for when mallory visited him? we know there’s a torture scene, but do people just assume mallory did it soley out of jealousy?

mavid going back to using terms of endearment will give me the energy i need to get through next week

dark eyes appreciation‼️ as someone with dark eyes myself, seeing so many authors describe main characters with blue eyes made me a little insecure about my own eyes :( but i’ve grown to embrace that dark eyes are sexy and cool and awesome. thank you for the appreciation :) romanticize dark eyes agenda 🙌

the whole david exploring max scene was so cautious and soft, it feels like when you come home after a long time of being away and just feeling that immediate sense of comfort

“Max wanted to help and when he realized his way of helping didn’t help, he got frustrated.” honestly i’m on david’s side with this one. as mature as max has become, it’s hard to accept that his way of helping david won’t work any longer. david needs to be in complete control of his healing, he has had his autonomy taken away too much for anything else. luckily for us, max is very much a “tell me what you need and i’ll do it”

arthur got the role 🫶

jackson jaden slander 🥰 and just jackson being on maxs side too

the entire tattoo scene was a glimpse of heaven dani

“It’s the kind of energy I’ve manifested in my room” to be fair, confessing their undying love, being honest, and having a good hug was pretty close to what happened. so imma say arthur’s manifestations were successful

david finally writing again! and writing about other max!!

talking about games throughout the this chapter and even in the white house party scene was just so neat to me. for me, it kinda represents david purposefully lying to himself, or feeling like he needs to lie to himself, so he can heal. in some ways, he was playing the game for the entire 13 years he was divorced and making max hate him. but he doesn’t need to play any game anymore. know he just needs to be david.

oh the character development of these two 🥰 i really feel like a mom watching my kids grow into the best versions of theirselves.

you’re amazing, you’re amazing, you’re amazing.

ps: will the flashback scene of the next chapter be mavids first date 👀

pps: i just found out i got accepted into two more of the colleges i applied to! so i’m currently 3 for 3!!! two more to go 🤞
