Max is used to coming home to find Liz’s nose buried in a scientific paper. She’ll be curled up on the couch, notebook balanced on one knee, pen in one hand and glass of wine in the other, focused so intently that she doesn’t always react to him coming through the door.

Tonight’s no exception, except the wine is missing. They must have run out and he makes a mental note to buy some more as he pauses on the threshold to admire the view. She’s wearing one of his sweatshirts, leggings, and chunky socks, and the entire scene invites him in for snuggling, but he knows she’ll get irritated if he tries that before she’s finished reading her article. It doesn’t bother him; it’s part of who she is, that insatiable mind, trying to fix the world.

He’s converted the second bedroom into a shared office so she’s got somewhere to do this, but she always insists she prefers reading here, fireplace lit, waiting for him to return to her. He thinks she also wants the office to be his space, somewhere for him to write, but he’ll always share everything with Liz. Happily. This isn’t his house anymore, it’s their home, and nothing eases the decades-long ache in his soul like that thought.

She finally notices him watching her, glancing up from her paper with a soft “Hey.”

He crosses the room, crouching beside her so they can share a kiss. “You want me to head back out for wine? I can pick-up some takeout.”

Liz shakes her head, takes his hand in hers. “I have something to show you.”

It’s said lightly, but the words themselves are ominous. He grips her hand tighter, even as she strokes her thumb across his skin soothingly. “What?”

She closes her eyes, frowns in concentration. Max glances around in confusion, wondering what she could possibly show him like this, but then—the lights flicker. Dim, just for a second, like he’s had a moment of quiet rage. And again.

Except— “I didn’t do that.”

Liz opens her eyes again, nodding, while she thrusts her notebook towards him. “Right. It happened the first time a few days ago when I was here alone, so I knew it couldn’t be you. So I’ve been doing some reading.” 

She gestures at her notes, which he holds, reading but not understanding. The inside of his brain is a whirlwind of fear and confusion. Liz had just manipulated electrical energy. Like he can. “How?”

“This is what I’ve been researching. I’d heard about fetomaternal microchimerism though I’ve never seen it in action, but of all the possibilities, this made the most sense to me. So I took a few cell samples from different places—blood, hair, cheek swab, the usual, and it confirmed what was happening.”

“I’m not complaining, I feel great! If we can skip over all that and just get straight to glowing it will be amazing.”

“Pregnant. Yes. Peed on a stick this morning to confirm it. That’s what all this is about.” She points at the notes again. “It’s perfectly normal.”

Max is pretty certain that nothing in his life could ever be described that way. His dawning horror has switched targets—Liz isn’t ill, she’s just… “We were—we were careful!”

“No form of birth control is completely effective,” she says with a shrug. She’s so casual about this, but Max, Max is spiraling. “I’ve arranged for Kyle to do an ultrasound—it’s lucky he did that rotation in obs and gynae before he picked surgery.” She finally stops, peering at Max with concern. “You look…worried.”

“Of course I’m worried! We have no idea what this might do to you.”

“Actually, I’ve got a fairly good idea, thanks to that biomedical degree I have, and all my friends with kids. Pregnancy is a horror show; there’s no reason for this one to be any different.”

For the first time, he notices the hint of panic in her eyes to match his. Everything she’s done, burying herself in science, is Liz’s way of coping with the unexpected. With the unknown.

He sets the notebook aside, empties her hands so she can grasp both of his, resting his forehead against hers. Offering the comfort she needs the only he can, as he can’t find the words right now.

“But I’m not too worried,” she continues. “We’ve dealt with bigger things before, we’ll get through this. You, me, our ragtag band of genius friends…and our baby. We’ll be a family.”

It’s that word, and her hopeful smile, which lights an answering spark in his chest. For all the times he’s longed for a family, he always looked to the stars. Never thought he’d actually find one. Never thought he could create one, here on Earth. But that might be what he’s managed with Liz. 

His family is right here on this couch. All three of them.

“How do you take it?”

DI Tim Warren raised his heads from his hands and looked up at Kate with a quizzed look on his face.

“Coffee Tim. Milk? Sugar?”

“Black is fine, thank you”. He picked up the ice pack next to him and put it against the bruise on his temple again. Kate continued making three coffees in her kitchen while Rebecca and Warren both sat at the table. The clock said 1.30am but none of them were tired. It had been a long night already....

Rebecca had hung up the phone and pushed her foot to the accelerator. She ran an amber light that was changing and headed towards Leyton. Her mind was racing. Not only did she still need to process the events at the pawn shop in Hackney, but hearing Kate confront Warren. She felt a mixture of emotions. Anger and yet sadness too. The special investigations team she worked with were like a second family to her - she was even joining them soon! The idea their second most senior member was working for Mulvaney was horrific. She had to find out more, and prayed Kate would not have sought revenge on the spot. She passed the Olympic Park lit up and looking magnificent at night, a symbol of London’s best and brightest moments, and entered the streets of Leyton, a home to some of the city’s murkier times. She saw Kate’s car opposite the pawn shop and parked nearby. There were one or two people on the street but no sign of her colleague. She tucked her gun into the back of her leggings and jogged down the nearest alleyway. It sounded like Kate was in a relatively deserted place when she called and Rebecca guessed she had followed him down there. She rounded the corner and saw Warren on all fours, his hand against a wound on the side of his head. Kate was standing over him panting and pointing her gun at him.

“I fucking trusted you!” she hissed at Warren. She kicked him in the stomach and he fell flat to the floor.

“Kate” said Rebecca urgently. Her colleague looked up and saw her for the first time. Kate had fury written on to her face. She was seething.

“Give me one good reason I shouldn’t blow your brains out here” she asked Warren coldly.

“Let me explain” he pleaded, “you must”.

“Why Warren. Tell me why”. Kate tightened her grip on her gun.

“My...my boyfriend. Mulvaney has him. He’s going to kill him!”

“Bullshit” Kate said.

“It’s true!” Warren pleaded. Rebecca saw him reach for an idea. “My phone” he said, “let me show you”. He put his hand towards his trouser pocket.

“Keep your hands still. Stand up slowly” Kate commanded. She glanced at her partner. “Rebecca, go check him out”.

Warren got slowly to his feet, nursing his head as he did so. Rebecca walked over to him and fished in his pocket for his phone. She found it.

“Passcode is 1982” he said. She used it to unlock the phone. Warren had a range of apps, most of them for working remotely or managing his regimented lifestyle. “Check the gmail. Message at 8.46pm”. Rebecca located the app and scanned his messages until she found one at 8.46pm. It looked innocuous enough. It was from ‘Eastern Deliveries’ asking for a pickup. Rebecca looked at the address it was being sent to - it was the same as the pawn shop. The price for the job was odd too. £1910.90. “The price”, Warren said, “19, 10, 90. 19th October 1990. That’s....that’s Stefan’s birthday....”. He slumped down and Rebecca saw tears in his eyes. Kate and Rebecca exchanged glances. Warren had rarely talked of his partner and Rebecca could not even remember Warren saying his name before.

Kate looked down the barrel of the gun and Rebecca could see her studying the sobbing Inspector on the alley floor. “OK” she said finally and lowered her gun, “I think it’s time for a chat”.

Rebecca finished her coffee. The clock was about to strike 2.15am and the caffeine could not properly keep her awake. It had been a long night and all three around the table were now silent. Warren had finished recounting the story of how his boyfriend Stefan had been kidnapped two months previously. He had been out for a run and did not return. That same night he received a mobile phone in the post with pre-loaded messages showing him tied and beaten, with threats to Warren about having Stefan’s blood on his hands if he informed the police or did not comply. Warren suspected Mulvaney might have a senior commissioner under his pay and so had kept silent, passing on the salient details of the case using the burner phone and texting a series of numbers. He had admitted to informing Mulvaney of Patrick Hanlon’s safe house. Rebecca remembered the dead protection officer and the call to his family, but held her nerve until he had finished. Warren loved his partner, and she wondered if she would do any different if someone was threatening the people she loved....she shuddered at the thought of it. For their part, Kate and Rebecca talked of their recent ‘out of hours’ projects too. None of them felt proud of their actions and they knew they now needed to discuss what to do next.

“Right” Kate finally said, “so the good news is the raid is fake, so you can tell Mulvaney you helped get it called off. That should appease him for now”.

“Do you know where Stefan might be held?” Rebecca asked. Warren shook his head. He looked tired and Rebecca saw a small amount of grey in his hair. “Can you arrange a meet? Find out?”

“Mulvaney never does business in person” Warren said, “we’ve never met and I doubt ever will. He’ll keep his distance and send Martin Pocock”. This was a problem. Pocock was a lieutenant and would never betray Mulvaney. It would be hard to use him to find Stefan and until they did, Warren would have to continue to be an informant for him.

Silence descended as the three considered their options. Kate broke it. “It’s getting late” she said, “and this needs a lot more thought. Tim”, she looked at her colleague, “I give you my word we’ll find Stefan”.

He looked at her and nodded. “Thank you”, he said, “I give you mine I won’t betray you and Rebecca”. The two shook hands.

“Right Tim, you need to be in early tomorrow. Crash here in the spare room. Rebecca...I can offer you the sofa.”

Rebecca accepted it gladly. She was so tired she could have curled up under the table but was happier to be on the sofa with Kate’s spare duvet and pillow. Kate locked the door and all three said goodnight.

Rebecca woke and got ready at Kate’s. Warren was the first to leave the apartment to go to the office and contact Mulvaney’s henchmen about the cancelled raid, leaving Rebecca and Kate to breakfast together. They talked through their concerns.

“How are we going to find Stefan?”, Rebecca asked.

“I’m still working on that one” Kate replied.

“You trust Warren”.

“I do” Kate said assuringly, “and I don’t. Rebecca, we need to be prepared for a worst case scenario”. She handed her a small Beretta. “I think we both need to keep these on us whenever we can”. Rebecca took it. The gun was light but the weight on her mind was heavy. What would happen if Mulvaney were to find out about them? She shuddered at the thought and put the gun in a side pocket of her bag.

They set off for work together, walking along the river towards North Greenwich tube station.

“If you were Mulvaney, where would you hide Warren’s boyfriend?” Rebecca asked.

“It’s a good question”, Kate replied and she pondered it for a few seconds, “somewhere close by to my operations. Somewhere I could control”.

“So if we find Mulvaney we find Stefan”.

“Or we find Stefan and we find Mulvaney. I’m going to have a think on that one. Hey, has the guv talked to you about the Christmas party?” Kate changed the subject.

“It’s August, Kate”.

“Right but these things take time to plan”.

“You angling for more input? Maybe a trip to a firing range?”

Kate chuckled. “Oh god no. Some wine and an energetic shag with some intern I’ll never see again is good enough for me. No, I was wondering if maybe we could go talk to a certain club owner about having a bash in his place”.

Rebecca twigged. “You’re a genius”.

Kate smiled. “Damn right”.

“I’m off now guv”.

Rebecca poked her head round DCI Sullivan’s door. He looked up when she spoke and smiled.

“Tell him to keep the price reasonable, finances are tight enough at the moment”.

“Why do you think I’m taking Kate?” she joked.

Sullivan agreed. Kate was not someone who took no for an answer when negotiating. Rebecca bid him a good night and headed out of the office. The weather was cloudy but the August air was still warm and she did not need a jacket over her blue blouse and black pencil skirt. Kate joined her a few seconds later wearing a scarlet red tank top and black trousers. They walked together past Trafalgar Square and towards Soho.

Rebecca had convinced Sullivan that August was a good time to plan the Christmas party. She reasoned that most places would soon be booked and that it was easier for her to do the organising before she started her role as a trainee detective in September. Sullivan had agreed and asked what she had in mind. When she mentioned going to a cool bar and club in Soho he mentioned Simon Selwick and the charitable donations he’d made to the police.

“I know he’s friends with Assistant Commissioner Robbins. Let me see if I can get you a meeting” he offered. Rebecca had thanked him and now two days later her and Kate were taking the next steps in their plan. They had found out from Patrick Hanlon that Selwick was supplying high class escorts to Mulvaney’s secret brothel in Stratford. They hoped they could use him to get an invite to the next party and more intelligence on where it was. The meeting had been set at Majestic, one of Selwick’s clubs in the city. They arrived just after 5.30 and knocked on the door. A member of the bar team answered and showed them through the club. Rebecca had been there once during her time in London on a Saturday night. She remembered the entry and drinks costing her and her friends a lot but the atmosphere was electric. They had danced until around 3am and she remembered it being one of the nights that made her truly feel like the city was home. It was strange being back here without people and music.

They walked past the dance floor and through a door marked private that led to the offices around the back of the building. They stopped by a brown one with gold lettering that read “S. Selwick” in a flamboyant style, complete with a star that dotted the i in Selwick. The barman left them and they knocked.

“Come in, come in!” a loud voice boomed from within. They did so and stood just inside the door. Selwick’s office was decorated with hundreds of pictures on the wall of him shaking hands and embracing all members of society, from pop stars to politicians and even the Dalai Lama. He had some tropical plants under a UV light and a fish tank in the corner of the room. Selwick himself sat behind a large black desk in a high leather chair. He was wearing maroon trousers and a floral shirt. He jumped up when he saw the two ladies and opened his arms wide.

“Ah yes, our two officers. Hear to arrest me for having too much fun I suppose!” He held his hands out in front as of about to be handcuffed and laughed loudly at his own joke. Kate and Rebecca both smiled politely. “No, no, just good fun. Sit, sit!” He beckoned them towards two chairs opposite his desk and shook their hands vigorously as they introduced themselves.

“Now Kate and Rebecca, what can I do for my good friends at the Met?”

“We’re here to ask for an invite” said Kate.

“An invite? Yes how exciting!” Selwick replied, “well we must do that. I have many bookings already for Christmas but I can always find room for that”.

“Thank you Mr Selwick, that would be great” said Rebecca.

“Oh call me Simon” he insisted.

“You’re very generous to us”, Kate said, smiling at him. She leaned forward towards him. “How can we thank you?”

“The thanks of the law is enough”.

“But if we insisted....?”

Selwick looked at the two women and a mischievous grin appeared on his face. “Maybe you would join me for a drink?” He got up from his desk and went to the corner of the room where he had a counter with some bottles on it. He poured a scotch into three glasses and sat on a leather sofa. Kate got up and joined him on the sofa. She twirled her hair and looked deep into his eyes. Rebecca knew she could be a flirt but was still impressed by how easily it came to her colleague. She too took Selwick’s drink and sat on the side of him, keeping her bag with her.

“You’re very good to your friends, Simon” Kate whispered. She put her hand on his thigh. “Very good indeed”.

Selwick smiled. “I am lucky to have such gorgeous friends”.

Kate lightly chuckled and lightly touched her neck. “Would you say that to all of the people you know?” Her hand moved higher up his leg.

“All the people I know are fabulous” he declared.

“What about Kieran Mulvaney?” Kate asked. She grabbed his balls and twisted.

“Aaah” he cried out in pain. “What are you doi-?” He stopped mid sentence when he saw Rebecca put her hand in her bag and pull out her Glock 17.

“Now now Simon, no noise please”.

“But you’re hurting-aaah” Kate squeezed harder. “OK. What do you want?” Kate released him.

“Tell us about Mulvaney” Kate demanded.

“I don’t know such a person” Selwick said but his voice shook.

Rebecca reached into her bag and retrieved the suppressor for the gun. She started to slowly twist it on to the Glock and saw Selwick start to panic.

“But I thought you were police!” he protested.

“We are” said Kate calmly, “so one more wrong word and you’ll be the victim of a robbery gone awry”.

“But I don’t know anything!”

“I’m not 100% sure that’s true Simon. You’re supplying girls for Kieran Mulvaney, yes?”

“No” Selwick said flatly.

“Well that’s a wrong word. Is the suppressor on tight Rebecca? I think maybe a bullet to the knee will get our friend Simon talking”.

Rebecca nodded and chambered a round, Selwick flinching as she did so. She slowly looked down the sights.

“Wait!” Selwick cried, “yes, I do, but I don’t have anything to do with that beast of a man”.

“You’re supplying him girls for his sex parties, you want me to believe you’re not close”.

“I have to, I swear. I dont want to but I have to”.

“Bullshit”.

“No, you must believe me. It’s my protection fee, it keeps me in business”.

“Rebecca, take out his knee” Kate said coldly.

“He has friends on the licence board! He has friends in the police! One wrong word from Mulvaney and you’re out of business in an instant”. Selwick squirmed some more and covered his knees.

Kate flashed Rebecca a quick look. It was working, although neither had realised that Selwick might be an unwilling participant in Mulvaney’s plans. “Tell me more” she said, “how does he get all these people on side?”.

“It’s the parties”, Selwick said. “You go there, he films you with one of his girls and he has blackmail material over you for life. These are political men, they care too much for their reputation than to take him on”.

“Why not go to the police?” Rebecca asked, lowering her gun.

“He has spies in the departments. An assistant commissioner too I think. I couldn’t try, he would know instantly”. Rebecca was astonished and yet simultaneously not at the revelation that Mulvaney’s tentacles ensnared all of London. She saw an opportunity.

“So what would you do if Mulvaney was removed from the picture?”

“There’s no chance of that. Who can stop him?”

“Us” she said defiantly, “with your help we can do it”.

“What help can I be?” Selwick slumped on the sofa, “and besides, you’re just two people”.

“Two people who’ll risk it all” Kate said, “we just need something from you”.

“What? I can’t possibly betray Mulvaney. I’ve said too much already”.

“An invitation. Tell us when the next party is. Supply us as your girls”.

“And what if he finds I’ve sent him police”.

“Well Simon, I don’t think we’ll be police that night”.

Selwick pondered this for a second and looked at Rebecca’s gun. “It’s a suicide mission”.

“Then when we die, so does your risk” Kate said.

He looked at the two women again and regained his composure. “Ok” he said, “his next party is next Friday. There’s an address in Stratford my driver will take you to. You might want to dress more....appropriately” he said looking at the two of them up and down.

“I’m sure we can find something suitable”. Kate winked at Rebecca, who knew her partner had an interesting shopping trip planned for the two of them. “Now Simon”, Kate continued, “about our team Christmas party....”
