THE KING: ⭐️⭐️⭐️..: (Spoiler free) This Netflix movie was very good in many ways but lost stars to historical inaccuracy. As you (hopefully) know, I’m very into historical accuracy and while I understand the need to bend the abbreviate history to make it into a drama, setting up a famous battle incorrectly when it would have been just as easy to do it right is mind boggling. Interestingly, this film seems to be loosely based on the Shakespeare play rather than the real history which is strange to me as they embrace the inaccuracies of Shakespeare but not the style. Aaaanyway... if you’re able to pretend it’s just a fantasy story about a prince becoming a king then it’s actually very good, the story, the character development and the costumes were all good elements. So if you like a medieval story give it a go, if historical inaccuracies and poetic licence rankles you then be warned. Have you seen it what did you think? (Spoilery bit) Robert Patterson was ok in this but why oh why did they not just use a French actor. One of the most memorable things about Shakespeare’s play was the speech at Agincourt but that was replaced with a much weaker one that also was not historically accurate, so I don’t know what’s going on there. An example of inheriting Shakespeare’s inaccuracies was John Falstaff, this was a character Shakespeare renamed from the real life person due to their family complaining. In this film the character is reimagined but the fictional name remains. Got to see first LA screening of The King movie produced by Brad Pitt starring @tchalamet and @joeledgerton . Absolutely loved everything about this film! It seems to have been shot mostly with natural light and the epic battle scene was probably the most realistic that I have ever seen on screen. The question and answer segment at the end with the director, music composer and actors was a huge treat. Showing up mid-way through the film as the utterly smackable bleach blond Dauphin of France, the country Timothee Chalamet’s King Henry V has launched a war against, the former Twilight man is over-the-top, theatrical and above all fun. Pattinson’s clearly having a ball – delivering vicious threats in a stunningly accurate French accent and a clipped cadence which just drips condescension and self-satisfaction.
